His first office was located at the bend of the Tonawanda Creek near where the present I^and Office now stands. Batavia received her name from the suggestion of Mr. Paul Busti General Agent of The Holland Land Co., of Philadelphia, Pa. The first house was built in March 1801, on the site directly opposite the pres- ent Land Office. Batavia is located midway between Buffalo and Rochester. It is the County Seat of Genesee, the Mother of Western New York. From a small hamlet, Batavia has grown into a thriving town of 10,000 inhabitants. Her manu- factured goods include Agricultural Implements, Patent Carriage Wheels, Guns, Finished Wood-work for office buildings, residences etc., Shoes, Paper Boxes, etc., etc. Batavia has wide, regular streets, lined with grand old trees. Hun- dreds of beautiful residences are scattered over the town. Among the sights of interest are : New York State School for the Blind, surrounded by well kept grounds and shady walks and drives ; The Holland Land Office ; Morgan Monu- ment ; Richmond Mau.soleum. Batavia has rea<;on to be proud of her public schools, which stand among the highest in the State : also of her Railroad facili- ties, being located on the main line of the New York Central, Erie and Lehigh Valley Railroads, thus being able to ship goods in all directions, and at the low- est rates. Batavia also owns her own Electric Light Plant. The Board of Trade extends every facility to manufacturing concerns wishing to locate. A hearty welcome is extended alike to visitors, and those who may wish to settle here. Come and .see our beautiful town. Holland Land Office. Land Office — Interior. Court House.
