In these days of swift, appalling apostasy, when men hold such a vague, dreamy, uncertain idea as touching the almost unlimited responsibility of liv- ing, and the solemnity of death, hell, the judgment, and the recompence of a future life, it beco mes not only a God-given privilege, but an imperative duty to seize the well tested, long tried, and ever ef- fective Gosper trumpet, and waxing stronger and louder, so and a startling alai'tn to the siliy, giddy, careless, sleeping multitudes who are sweeping, with the momentum of a cyclone, down the river of death, past the last lighthouse of fall salvation, soon to be hurled over the falls of damnation, down, down, down into the lurid, liquid lake of fire and brimstone. Yea, it is necessary to "Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins." Isa.. 58:1. This little book has been written in the midst of incessant evangelistic labors, and hence there has been no time for polished sentences, rhetorical flour ishes, or oratorical flights. Indeed these are not half so much needed just now, as the redhot, burn ing, scorching truth of God, which cuts through the stubborn will, pierces the hard heart, melts the stiff spirit, aud puts to blessed rest the disquieted soul. No time to trifle now. Men are being damned at lightning speed. What we do must be done quickly. The sweets of salvation are too delightful, sin is too awful, heaven is too beautiful, hell is too real, and eternity is too long for man, the creature of a mo- ment, to trifle with eternal realities. ■ I have prayed much over, what is found in the following p^ es ' and M ieve ^ He has led me to write these few feeble liD- es ' [ oal ^ : crave His -blessings upon them, and ask Hii2? ^° us ® them, at least a little, to awaken some souls to theiT ^rik And whatever good may be derived therefroi^ ? Upon the windows of a publishing house in one of our great American cities are posted the words, 1 'Books are the only things that live forever. ' J While this is not wholly true yet it is largely so, therefore we should be careful what we write. One of old said, "What I have written I have written. " We should be thankful that in these days of skepticism and infidelity, when real conviction is scored at, and conversion is made to mean only a change of purpose, and while thousands are plung- ing headlong into the lake of fire and brimstone, deceived by this false teaching, that here and there we find a teacher that will write and preach the truth on these lines, and thunder into the ears of the unsaved that conviction is a real godly sorrow for sin, and that conversion is a glorious work of grace wrought in the human soul whereby it is made alive and therefore a new creature in Christ Jesus, old things are passed away and all things are be- come new. Of this class is the author of "Trumpet Blasts to the Unsaved." Although a young man, he gives the trumpet no uncertain sound, but boldly sets forth the true doctrine of scriptural conviction, regeneration and entire sanctification in a way so plain that none need misunderstand his meaning, and God is setting ftis seal to : - his labors by giving him hundreds of souls for his hire. We recommend this little book to the reader as logical and scriptural, and we trust it will be read and studied with much prayer and self-ex' amination for God has said. "Be not deceived." In Him, John P. Watkins. Chapter I. SIN. I. John 3:4. Only three letters in the word, but oh! what an untold amount of sadness, sorrow, misery, woe, and ever lasting ruin it has wrought among the sons and daughters of men. Sin. There is nothing like it. It is not only real, but it is the most awful thing in all God's Universe. It has withered, blighted, cursed and wrecked every thing and every body it has touched. It attacked, overcame and slew the first pair of the human family in the Garden of Eden. It was sin that brought on the deluge and swept the Antedeluvian multitudes down into a Devil's Hell. Sin slew the prophets and the faithful embassadors of the gospel. Sin nailed Jesus Christ to the cross and since then has murdered multitudes of the saints. To-day it is filling penitentiaries, jails, brothels, houses of illfame, saloons, beer gardens and imbeciles with blood- bought, judgment bound and eternity destined souls. Nor does it stop here, but swiftly and surely drags its duped victims down 12. TRUMPET BLASTS. to a liquid lake of fire and brimstone, where they will be kicked as foot balls around the dark walls of the dismal pandemonium the sport of demonical millions, while the ages of eternity roll up from the dark realms below. Apalling scene! Frightful spectacle! Sin Defined. God has not left it to the caprice of man, his wis- dom, his knowledge, his understanding, nor yet to his reasoning powers to give to his iellows a defini- tion of sin. He well knew what was in man, and that if he left it to him there would be all kinds of notions, ideas, opinions, theories, etc., as to what it really is. So He, Himself, has given a Divine definition that for- ever settles the controversy. Here it is as He thun- dered it from the throne of His holiness: "Whoso- ever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; For sin is the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4. And the "Law" spoken of in this passage is not hu- man, or man made, but it is divine. Since it is di- vine we are not surprised to find the following: "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just and good." Rom. 7:12. The different classes for which this law was made are set forth in the following words: "Knowing this that the law is not for the righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sin- ners, for unholy and for profane, for murders of SIN. 13, fathers and murders of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for 'liars, for purj'ured persons, and if there be any other thing that is con- trary to sound doctrine.'' 1 Tim; 1:9,10. Here we have it, like a winding sheet of light- ning, straight from the throne. This divine law, like a two edged sword, is drawn out and ready to devour the lawless, the disodebient, the ungodly, the sin- ners, the unholy, the profane, the murderers, the manslayers, the whoremongers, the defiled with mankind, the men stealers, the liars, the perjured- person, and if there be any other thing contrary to sound doctrine. Listen, "To Me beiongeth vengeance, and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste." Deut. 32:35. Sinner look out or you will drop into hell. Sin Located. Some say it is located in the liquor traffic, the to- bacco evil, the traffic in girls, the lodge, the labor unions, the opium trade, life insurance, the combined "trusts", church sprees, etc. All of the above, and a thousand more too numerous to mention, that are world wide in their influence, and honey combing the entire social fabric, are feeders to hell, smell of the pestiferous, suffocating fumes in the region of the 14. TRUMPET BLASTS. damned and are engulfing millions in a bottomless pit of irrevocable, irretrievable woe and misery. But if we overtake, find, and locate the fountain head of sin, from which these sickening, withering, blighting streams of impurity flow, we must get on a hotter track than any of those mentioned above. For if sin is to be destroyed, it must be located, so that the divine power which does the work can be applied. And thanks be to Jesus, He has not left us in the dark at this point. He, Himself, has located it, and points to the corrupt, filthy fountain from which it flows. Here it is: "For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornica- tions, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lascivousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness, all these evil things come from within and defile the man." Mk. 7:21-23. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. " Jere. 17:9. Here we have it in a nutshell. Sin is located not in leather, or wood, or any of these material ob- jects, but in the human heart which is the seat of the affections. So says the Great Teacher and so we be- lieve. All these impure, unclean, filthy streams that are inundating the whole world and penetrating the entire social fabric, will cease to flow just in porpor- tion as the heart of the individuals are cleansed and purified by the precious Blood of the Lamb. There SIN. 15. is no other hope, nor is there any other way, for it is written, "Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.'-' Acts 4:12. '-But if we walk in the light, as HE is in the light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. " 1 Jno. 1:7. Some things to which sin is likened. I. Sin is likened to afire. "For wickedness burn- etii as the fire." Isa. 9:18. Fire burns, penetrates, devours, consumes and destroys. And this is just what sin is doing. It is consuming manhood and womanhood. It is burning up the people of this world with lust, greed, unholy appetites, unholy passions and desires. Sin in the human soul sets the affec- tions and desires in a raging flame of hell-fire that sweeps through the deep subterranean regions of the heart spreading desolation, degredation, wreck and ruin, and, filling its posessor with the diabolic attri- butes of his satanic majesty makes him or her con- genial for the society of the damned. James in speaking of the fire of hell, and the smoldering em- bers of the bottomless pit, both of which are to be found in the heart of the unregenerated, says: "And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature: [Greek,. { 'the wheel of nature"] and it is set on fire of hell." 16. TRUMPET BLASTS. James 3:6. Wake up or you will burn in hell fire eternally. 2. Sin is likened to a disease. Disease in the Bible is often used figuratively, as is seen in the fol- lowing scripture: "From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it: but wounds and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither molified with oint- ment." Isa. 1:6. Of the thirty five different kind of diseases spoken of in the Bible it is probable there is none more offensive and destructive to human 1 life, than the loathsome disease of leprosy. In the thir- teenth chapter of Leviticus we have the development of sin set forth in a figurative way by a detailed ac- count of the beginning, progress and final end of that obnoxious disease of leprosy. The following charac- teristics of this disease are worthy of note. Leprosy for the most part was hereditary. It was deep seat- ed within. The first visible signs were s mall. It was gradual in its development. It was loathsome and offensive. It brought a melancholy condemnation, and there was no earthly cure for it. So ifc is with sin. We were born in sin. ^Behold I was shapenin iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. ' Ps. 51:5. It is deep seated within the human soul. Like leprosy it is gradual in its development. It is loathsome and offensive, both to the blessed adorable Trinity, and to all the pure and holy. It brings a SIN. 17. melancholy eondamnafcion, even an eternal separation from haaven and its inhabitants, and everlasting damnation in a davit's hell. And there is no earthly cure for ii. Nothing bu* the blood of our ever to be praised and adorable Saviour end Omnipotent Power can destroy it and cleanse it from the human soul. { 'Without the shedding of blood is no remission.' ' Heb. 9:22. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:12. Sinner behold thy Redeemer. 3. Sin has been likened to rebellion. "Behold to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witch" craft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry." 1 Sam. 15:22-23. While it is true that none of us were born sinners, it is equally true that none of us were born sinless. That is to say, we were all born with the sin principle in us, inherited from our fed- eral head, Adam, which at the years of accountabil- ity, not only leads us away from God, but quickly, and most surely develops into open rebellion against the divine law, which is "holy, just, and good." Hence, we are not surprised to find open rebellion against God, in the home, the community, the state, the nation, and the nations. Men are lost; they are rebels; they are morally insane; they are in league with the unholy trinity, yea, with hell. itself, and are 18. TRUMPET BLASTS. arrayed against God and His kingdom, His truth, and His saints. Sinner, this means you. If you continue to follow the inclinations and desires of your own deceived, depraved heart, you with the millions that know not God, will make your bed in a devil's hell, Look out, for your feet are taking hold on it now. Yea, "hell from beneath is moved to meet thee at thy coming." 4. Sin has been likened to blindness. "Their minds were blinded." 2 Cor. 3:14. "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gos- pel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." 2 Cor. 4:4. This is not a physical, but a spiritual blindness. Let me illustrate: The human body is made up of three grand classes or systems of organs. The first is the motive, or mechanical system, which is composed of the bones, the liga* ments, and muscles. The second is the vital, or nu- tritive system, which is composed of the lymphatics, the blood vessels, and the glands, the office of which is circulation, absorption, and secretion. The third is the mental, or nervous system, which is composed of the organs of sense, the cerebrum and the cere- bellum. The organs of sense by which we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel, and through which we receive impressions from external objects, communicate their impressions to the brain by means of special SIN. 19. nerves. This picture has its counterpart in the spir- itual realm. Corresponding to these senses are the five spiritual senses of the human soul, which are made alive in regeneration, and very keenly and highly intensified in entire sanctification. For we must not overlook the fact when Adam fell (and the human race fell with him) he lost his spiritual head. Hence this poor lost race is a headless race. This accounts for the reckless way in which poor lost sin ners rush down to a devil's hell. They have no spir- itual eyes, hence they cannot see the "lake of fire and brimstone" into which they are going. They are without ears, hence they do not hear the cries, groans, and shrieks of the doomed and dying. They have no spiritual tongues, hence they can not taste the fire of hell that is about to bum them with "the fire that never shall be quenched." And as for the sense of smelling and feeling, they neither smell the fiery billows that roll beneath their feet, nor feel in any degree, the pangs of hell torment, and the suf- ferings of the damned. Sinner friend, this is your own picture. In Jesus' name, wake up before de- mons drag your poor lost soul over the cataracts of eternal despair, down into the unquenchable flames of hell fire. Chapter II. SOWING AND REAPING. "For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Gal, 6:1, There are four classes of people in the world. 1. The holy. 2. The moral (so-called). 3. The hypo- crite. 4. The out- broken sinner. The first sow to themselves "in righteousness". The second sow self- righteousness. The third sow hypocrisy. While the fourth sow sin in all its forms. The seed sown, whether good or bad, falls into the heart soil, is buried there, germinates, takes root and springs forth and produces both personal and active character. The character is nourished, cultivated, trained, grows and develops, until at last an abundant, well-rllled, ripe harvest is brought forth. This is followed by the reaping day, which is two -fold in its nature. For ifc is a settled, well known fact, proven both by the Bible and human testimony, that, although indiyiduals, families and nations do reap much of what they have sown during the probationary period, yet the final reaping day, with all the momentous disclosures that will be brought to view, with every secret thing is yet SOWING AND REAPING. 21. future, and confined to a period of time which the holy Scriptures designate as "the day of judgment". The silly, deluded multitudes who are marching with double quick time down to a yawning hell, are ever busy sowiri^sin in all its forms, having, it seems, no thought, or conception whatever, of the reaping day and the final consequences of sin. Throwing off all moral restraint, ignoring all personal responsibili- ty and duty both toward God and man, hooting at divine demands and commands, and jeering at God- given privileges and opportunities, they- rush on, like the prancing steed to battle, when suddenly the sandy foundation over which they are traveling gives away and wfth an awful wail they drop into hell, and going down beneath its fiery billows they sink to rise no more. Appalling scene ! Frightful spectacle ! As we stated before, we are not only sowing, but we are going to reap. And we are going to reap just what we sow; for God declares, that "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh, | shall of the flesh reap corruption : but he that soweth to the Spirit, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting," Gal. 6:7, 8. Briefly let us look for a few illustrations of this God- given declaration. And may the Holy Ghost guide our thoughts in the path of truth. 1. If you sow whiskey and intoxicating bever- ages, you will reap drunkards. Whiskey is an alco- 22. TRUMPET BLASTS. holic poison going direct to the brain and unbalancing the lower part, it destroys memory, meditation and association of thoughts. It slays an army of one hundred thousand each year in the United States ; two hundred thousands in France and in other coun- tries in proportion. It causes nine tenths of our poverty and three fourths of our crime. Ninety three per -cent of the inmates of penitentiaries (there are fifty two penitentiaries in the United States) are hab- itual drunkards. Thirty nine out of every one- hundred deaths are caused by the liquor traffic. Drunkenness in this country has increased thirty seven per- cent in the last ten years. There are one thousand, seven hundred and forty one breweries^ two thousand, two hundred and sixty seven distiller- ies and more than two hundred and forty thousand saloons in the United States. These contribute to the support of the national government one hundred and eighty five million dollars annually, but they take from the citizens of this country over one billion, two hundred and fifty million dollars every year. The beer bill for the world is two thousand dollars every minute, or six pounds and fifteen shillings worth vanishes down the world's throat at every tick of the watch. The amount drank by the world in one year would make a lake three and three -fourth miles long, one mile wide and six feet deep, or two thous- and, three hundred and nineteen acres in area. In SOWING AND REAPING. 23. this lake we could drown all the English speaking people to the number of one hundred and twenty millions, while all the people of England, Scotland, Ireland and France could stand in its bed. This hell on wheels (that is, the liquor traffic) makes a pauper every tick of the watch, and every minute disquali- fies seventy eight men for business. It is the broth of hell, and the liquid fire of perdition. Beware of it, for "At the last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder," Prov. 23:32. 2. If you sow tobacco you will reap corruption, filth and a malady of diseases. Tobacco is a twin brother to whisky. It is a narcotic poison going di- rect to the heart. It contains seven per-cent nico- tine. One drop of this will kill a cat. There is enough of it in one cigar, if extracted and taken, to kill two men. There is enough of it in one pound to kill three hundred men. It slays an army of twenty thousand men each year in the United States alone. There are fifteen thousand insane people in the insane asylums of this country who have gone insane from its use. It produces heart disease, Bright's dis- ease, dyspepsia, smokers' sore throat, cancer, etc. It lowers the morals, diseases the whole body, cre- ates an appetite for intoxicating drinks, takes a firm grip upon the will power, weakens it, leads its victim away from the path of truth and purity, and is one of the open doors to hell. There is more than one billion 24. TRUMPET BLASTS. pounds of it i-aiiod each year in the world, at an ex* pen* 3 of 3to hundrad million dollar! to the farmers. Tho ^oboeoo bill for tho Unit*! Statee is seven nun- dr od and iltty million dollars a year, and for the s^h^i'i srcrld it is oror on© billion dollars annually. The increase in the usa of oigara and cigarettes in the United 3tatea since the y^ar 1875 is alarming. In tha^j yoa** the people of this country used forty million. In 1300 they used three thousand, two hundred and sixty million. During the past year ending June, 1906, the number of cigarettes smoked were three billion, seven hundred and ninety one million, seven hundred and fifty nine thousand, nine hundred and three ; and the number of cigars smoked during the same period were eight billion, seventy million, six hundred and seventy two thousand, six hundred and forty. Without controversy the filthy weed is a men- ace to good society, and a strong breeder of impurity, vice and crime. It makes its victim as filthy as a goat, as stinking as a shoat, and quickly prepares him for hell fire. Beware of this blight of the pit. 3. If you sow cards you will reap gamblers. We read of tobacco fiends, cigarette fiends, whiskey fiends, novel fiends, etc. But here comes the gam- bling fiend. He is diseased, debauched, degraded, vicious, and has little respect for himself or any one else. He apends his nights in the 3aloon, the brothel, the gambling hell, and in lurking about the streets SOWING AND REAPING. 25. watching for prey. During the day while honest men labor for a livelihood, he sleeps his life away. The following is applicable in his case. "He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den : he lieth in wait to catch the poor; he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net," Ps. 10:9. Many look upon him as one of the offscourings of the earth. Poor soul. But he is not alone in this soul- diseasing, mind « polluting, hell- igniting practice. These popular, apostate preachers and fallen church members of these back- slidden, fallen ecclesiasticisms are as deep in the blue mud of hell, as he is in the foaming broth of the bottomless pit. Why? Because they uphold card playing, dancing, pool, games of chance, etc., and thus exhibit to a God- defying, Christ-rejecting, Spirit-insulting, hell-bound world that they are in league with the unholy trinity, on the palace car route to the lake of fire and brimstone. Many a poor gambler received his first lesson in the parsonage, or in the house of a popular church member. What a shame! What an outrage! Those who pass for leaders and ins!ructors in religious thought, and who ought to point dying men and women to the Lamb of God, "which taketh away the sin of the world", giv- ing souls their first lessons in damnation. Think. of it. Eight million dollars pass from hand to hand each day in Christendom through gambling practice, and 82,800,000,000 every twelve months. And why? Be- 26. TRUMPET BLASTS. cause we, as a nation, are reaping just what we have sown. * 'Be not deceived: God is not mocked, " Do you see? 4. If you sow dances you will reap harlots, liber- tines, and suicides. There are 350,000 fallen women in the United States. The average life of these women is estimated to be only five years. Hence this means that they die at the rate of 70,000 r a year, or 5916 a month, or 197 a day, or 8 per hour, or one every eight minutes. Seventy five per-cent of this unfortunate class testify and lay the charge of their downfall di- rectly, or indirectly, at the door of the modern dance. The positions taken in the modern dance arouse the passions of men and women as scarcely anything else. And a demon-possessed man with his vile passions set ablaze with the fire of hell is an inhuman monster. As A general rule no true virtuous woman will se- lect for herself a companion to share the joys and sorrows of married life, who is fond of putting his arm around the waist of every young lady who does not object; and no true virtuous man is likely to choose for himself a young lady to be his wife and life companion who is delighted to have the young men put their arms around her waist. If the liber- ties taken with your daughter in the modern dance were repeated in your parlor, by that young man who is keeping company with her, you would kick him out of the house and over the back fence. And yet SOWING AND REAPING. 27. fathers and mothers will pay for and send their daughters to dancing Masters and thus buy them a ticket over the Black Valley Route to the nethermost hell. Beware of the modern dance, another one of the open doors to helL 5. If you sow oyster stews, ice cream socials, strawberry festivals, cake walks, foot and ankle shows, bazaars, grab bags, etc., in the church (so- called) you will reap a God -in suiting, Christ-ignoring, Holy Spirit -rejecting and anti-holiness society, who, themselves, are not only going down quick into hell, but who also are poisoning those with whom they come in contact, and being used as the direct tool in the hands of the devil to damn them world without end. Lift up your eyes, look about you and see for yourself. These poor, lost, backslidden, fallen de- nominations, who, fifty and seventy five years ago had the old time Jerusalem, Holy Ghost fire, and their altars lined with weeping, heart broken peni- tents, are today cold, dead, lifeless, and fireless. They have ice in the pulpit, snow in the choir, and icicles in the pew six inches long. But why such a spiritual dearth? Because the above mentioned things, together with so many infidelic preachers, and a thousand other things too numerous to mention, have driven God the Holy Ghost, and Bible salvation from their midst, and in the place of these have plac- ed the devil and his sinning religion. Instead of 28. TRUMPET BLASTS. preaching hell-fire and brimstone to sinners, in order to get them saved from all their sins, and heavenly fire to believers in order to get them sanctified wholly, they spend their God-given time (many of them) in preaching: human theology, theories, opinions, lying traditions, creeds, man made churches, historical truth, scientific truth, political truth, etc.. ; while the poor, deceived, hood- winked congregations,' the silly, ■i deluded devotees of a bloodless, sinning religion die on their hands and drop into a devil's hell, since there is not enough Gospel truth in one of their ser- monettes to make soup for a sick grasshopper. Do you see it? They are reaping just what they have sown. May God in mercy wake them up before it is too late, and save them from a devil's hell. 6. If you sow secret societies, lodges, labor un- ions, etc., you will reap idolaters, infidels, skeptics, unbelievers, and faithless men and women, Secret societies, lodges, labor unions fraternal orders, etc., are '.aking this, and other countries." Their history proves beyond the possibility of a cavil, that they are made up largely of thieves, murderers, whore- mongers, liars, perjured persons, tobacco chewerf, whiskey drinkers, etc. And being bound as they are by the most blood curdling oaths, they stand by, and protect each other in ailkindsof vice, crime, and wickedness. They were born in hell, originated in the bottomless pit, smell of "the tires of perdition, SOWING AND REAPING. ( 29. and are upheld and pushed forward by his satanic majesty. Bishops, presiding elders, preachers, and church members are among their faithful adherents, all of which go to show the corruption of the social fabric, the apostasy of the times, and the near ap- proach of the coming King. However, the willing and obedient are hearing the call. '"'Come out from among them, and' be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and 1 will receive you," for "it is a shame to speak of those things which are done of them in secret." 2 Col 6:17; Eph. 5:12. 7. If you sow anger, pride, jealousy, irritabil- ity, impatience, and carelessness, and recklessness, in your home life and government, you will reap a class of rebellious,' disobedient, anarchal children, who in early life will be "filled with the diabolic attri- butes that make them congenial for the society of the damned, and bring your gray hairs with sorrow down to the grave. In these clays of swift appalling apostasy, children, for the most part are not raised at all, if viewed from the Bible standpoint, but are simply turned loose, like cattle, and left to grow up. Hence, it has come to pass that boys and girls at the age of ten and fifteen years know as much as men and women used to know at twenty-five. It would take the mathematical calculation of an arch angel to figure out the moral state of society in a half dozen generations from now, if Jesus tarries, and things 30. TRUMPET BLASTS. continue to move on as they are going at present. No doubt multitudes of children will meet their pa- rents at the judgment, and take them by the throat and curse them to their face for being the direct tool in the hands of the devil to damn them world without end. Chapter III. CONVICTION AND REPENTANCE. 4 'And when He is come He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment." John 16:8. "Ee- pent ye and believe the gospel." Mark 1:15. Conviction is the direct work of the Holy Ghost, the Third Person in the Adorable Trinity. The Greek is Elegclio and means to refute, to reprove, to convict. A radical, thorough, pungent conviction for sin, both actual and original, is the only foundation for every true work of grace, without which conver- sion or sanctification is absolutely impossible. Holy Ghost conviction breaks up the fallow heart soil, softens the hard, harsh spirit, melts the stiff, starchy soul, moves the stubborn will, the king of humanity, to action, and seizes the individual thus exercised with the pains of hell, and gives a faint feeling of hell torments. The conviction is for sins committed, righteousness required, and the coming judgment that is absolutely certain to over take the finally im- penitent. The blessed Holy Ghost using the word of God, which is the Divine Sword of the Spirit, (See JEph. 6:17.) probes down into the deep subterranean region of the soul and makes one feel as if the arch- angel of justice had blown his trumpet and sent forth 32. TRUMPET BLASTS. the summons for him to appear at the judgment bar of a thrice holy God. Hence the heavy moaning, the deep sighing, the loud sobbing, the incesant weeping and the persistent cries for mercy, God and salvation. It is under such conditions as these that the ap- petite wanes, the desire for food, sleep, unholy asso- ciates and all kinds of -wickedness fades away as the gray light of the early morning, and the poor, help- less, captive soul, longs to be releaved from the awful load of sin, and, like the caged bird, set at liberty, Tha dark, hideous sinful past, like a mighty pano- rama, rolls before the soul's vision in a geometrical progression until the very night of hell itself shuts out every ray of light and the wounded spirit cries out in anguish, "I'm lost! I'm lost!'' It is thi3 sort of a cry that sees hell to boiling, devils to howling, hypocrites to raging and anti-holiness preachers, church members and churches (so called) to opposing and rejecting the work, crying "fanaticism", "senti- mentalism", "bosh", "excitement", "wildfire", etc. But the soul that is thus suspended over hell with the gospel harpoon pays little attention to the people, the surroundings^ the conditions, or the circu in- stances and cries, "What must I do to be saved?" The answer comes back "Repent and believe the gospel. " t i But what is Bible repentance? Let iajs see. 1. Bible repentance means a godly sorrow for sin. "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to sal- CONVICTION AND REPENTANCE. 33. vation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold the self same thing that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, whaMndignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehe- ment desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge," 2 Cor. 7:10,11. Here we have two kinds of sorrow. The first is "godly sorrow": the second is "the sorrow of the world". The first is from above: the second is from beneath. The first "worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of", while the second "worketh death". That is, it works spiritual, physical, tem- poral and eternal death. Prom the above Scripture we see that an individual with "godly sorrow" for sin will do seven things: 1. There will be carefulness on every line. "What carefulness it wrought in you." 2. There will be a cleaning up and a clearing of obsta- cles out of the way. "What clearing of yourselves." 3. There will be an indignation against every wrong thing. "Yea what indignation." 1. There will be a fear of doing that which is wrong. "Yea what fear. '"' 5. There will be a longing desire for God. "Yea, what vehement desire." 6. There will be an almost con- suming zeal for right. "Yea what zeal." 7. There will be a real hatred of the devil and all his works. "Yea what revenge." You see then by comparing the above Bible pic- 34 TRUMPET BLASTS, ture, or photograph of one who has a real Vgodly sor- row" for sin with the modern teaching on this point ihat they are as diverse each from the other as night is from day, or light is from darkness. This modern -teaching which originated in hell, and smells of the pestiferous fumes of the lost, and has been, and is being scattered broadcast by the devils preachers, holds that because of the culture, education, refin- ement, advancement, etc. of these "wonderful days", It is no longer necessary to have deep, pungent con- viction and "godly sorrow" for sin. Away with this skepticism, infidelity and "higher criticism" of these "last days" of swift, appalling apostasy and "to the law and testimony" which says, "The heart is deceit- ful above all things and desperately wicked",, and "When they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Jer. 17:9, and Acts 2:37. 2. Bible repentance means the confession of all sin. "Against thee, thee only have I sinned and done this evil in thy sight. " Psa, 51:4. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9. Note the expression "our sins". There are wives who are willing to confess their husbands' sins, and there are husbands who are willing to confess their wives' sins. There are parents who are willing CONVICTION AND REPENTANCE. 35. to confess the sins of their children, and there are children who are willing to confess the wrong doings of their parents. There are sisters who are willing to confess the wickedness of their brothers, and there are brothers who are willing to confess the mistakes and errors of their sisters. There are relatives who are willing to confess the crookedness and inconsis- tencies of their kinsfolk, but are unwilling to confess their own sins and misdoings. But according to the above Scripture every single individual who has sin- ned and withheld from God, society and him cr her- self what rightfully belongs to each, must go down into the dust of humility and self-abasement and confess it "all" out to God, or else go down quick into the nethermost hell. There is not a ray of hope, there is not a glimmer of light, nor is there any other way except this route, namely, "If we confess our sins." It is either this, or a burning, hissing hell. Come to the rugged cross of Calvary and come now. Confess out and cease to trifle with God, His good- ness, His mercy, His longsuffering and eternal real- ities. Tell him all about it. Pour your soul out at His loving feet, ask His forgiveness and swear eternal fidelity to Him, His truth. His cause, His work and the advancement of His kingdom. Don't play. Don't waste any time, but get down to business and he will take you on board the gospel ship of Zion, for He has said, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are 36. TRUMPET BLASTS. heavy laden and I will give you rest." Matt. 11:28. Here is a fountain of peace and rest and joy for your sin-sick soul. 3. Bible repeatance means the forsaking of all sin. "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the un- righteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him: and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon." Isa. 55:7. It is not enough to be sorry for sin, and even to con- fess sin, (albeit these are the first steps,) but one must go> farther than this if pardon is to be granted and divine favor secured. Indeed the above Scrip- ture settles the question beyond the possibility of a cavil, that you must go out of the sinning business, forsake it and leave it world without end, before God even promises to save. It is not until after "the wicked forsakes his way and the unrighteous man hi& thoughts" and "returns unto the Lord", that He promises to "have mercy upon him" and "abundant- ly pardon" him. The wicked have but one way and that "is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death". Prov. 14:12. He is on the broad guaged palace car route to the lake of fire and brimstone. He hastens on toward hell, with the momentum of a cyclone, when suddenly he is checked by Divine power and made to feel, recognize and understand his lost condition. He longs for God, for Divine favor, for pardon and for salvation. He CONVICTION AND REPENTANCE. 37. stops suddenly, faces about, retraces his steps, and, like the prodigal son, returns to the Father's house where there is "bread enough and to spare". The Father sees him. has compassion upon him, runs to meet him, falls upon his neck, presses the kiss of pardon on his lips, receives and welcomes him back into the family circle, clothes him with the "best robe", gives him the golden ring of divine love, places upon his feet the silver sandals of His grace, pre- pares the great feast by killing the "fatted calf", thus fulfilling the Scripture; "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing: and [ will receive you, and be a Father unto you. and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." 2 Cor. 6:17,18. 4. Bible repentance means to take the back track and make restitution. "And Zaccheus, stood and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor: and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him four fold." Luke 19:8. In these days of swift, appalling apostasy there are very few unsaved people, who when they set out to find God and salvation, do not have more or less restitution to make in order to obtain the cov- eted blessing. Injured parties must be sought and found, either by letter or in person, and their for- giveness asked; deep, humilating confession must be 38- TRUMPET BLASTS. made, and wrongs made right. Stolen articles are either to be returned , or their value in money to be payed, c Old debts, bills, etc., must be looked after, and settled, and a general cleaning up on all lines must take place. This is not a pleasant task but it is God's line and. must be taken, or else the one seeking sal- vation is sure to meet with ignominous defeat and soul disaster. And let it be remembered there is no appeal from this radical Bible line, It is this or hell. Heaven is cheap at any price. If you will take the track, pay the price, and dig to the bottom, God will deliver the goods to your address. Take this line and there can be no defeat, no failure, and no soul- wrecking disaster. There are not enough men on earth, nor devils in hell to keep you from getting the real genuine, heart felt experience. The might and strength of the Lord is pledged to see you through. If you have a godly sorrow for sins, if you have con- fessed all your sins, if you have forsaken all your sins, and if you have taken the back track and made restitution, then listen to this sweet promise: "And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house." Luke 19:9. "Son thy sins are forgiven thee." Mark 2:5. Beautiful message. Delightful information. Sweet words, undescribable peace, har- mony, concord, salvation and joy. Amen. Chapter IV". FAITH AND REGENERATION. "Thyfaifli hath made thee whole," Mark 10:52. "Re- pent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins 1x1 ay be blotted out," Acts 3:19. In the last chapter we had conviction and re- pentance. Bible repentance puts one on believing ground for pardon, just as the end of ~ a complete ^consecration puts the Christian believer on believing ground for purity, or entire sanctification. We are justified by faith, ("Therefore being justified by faith",) and ''Without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh'to Cod must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him," Heb. 11:6. "Faith is the substance [i. e., the ground or confidence] of things hoped for, the 40. TRUMPET BLASTS. evidence of things not seen," Heb. 12:1. Hence if you have a saving faith you have both the substance, or ground, or confidence of the thing hoped for, and the evidence of the thing not seen. The Greek word in this passage is elegchos, and means a proof, a con- viction, a sure persuasion. Hence, a saving aith, which is the gift of God, (See Eph. 2:8) is a proof, a conviction, and a sure persuasion that, both the thing hoped for, and the thing not seen are yours. And this faith, or proof, or conviction, or sure per- suasion is not rooted and grounded in what men have thought, or believed or taught, but in the un. changeable, irrefutable, and eternal promises of God, Who has said, "Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out," John 6:37. Hallelujah to the Lamb." Faith is no more perfect until every doubt is eliminated, than the heart, the seat of the affections, is pure, until the last taiut of inborn, innate, original depravity has been cleansed and washed away by the second application of the precious blood of the Pet Lamb of dark Calvary. And let it be remem- bered that the saving faith of which we speak, is neither the faith of a devil, ("The devils believe and tremble") nor yet a head faith, but it is a heart faith, for it is written, that, "With the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession FAITH AND REGENERATION. 41. is made unto salvation," Rom. 10:10. Look up and accept Him as your Saviour. The principles of faith of which we speak are set forth in the following verse of Scripture : "These all died in faith, [Greek "According to the faith"] not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and em- braced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth," Heb. 11:13. Here are three things. 1. They, having seen the promises "afar off" were "persuaded" that they were true. 2. They "embraced them", that is, they threw them- selves recklessly out upon them, and placed implicit confidence in them. 3. They confessed them, that is, their utmost confidence in them. Now, whoever you may be, and whatever it is you desire from the hand of God, whether it be par- don or regeneration or sanctification or the healing of your body, etc,, you must follow the same line. You must be persuaded that the premises of God (They touch every possible emergency and need that can come into your life during your probationary state.) are absolutely true. In the next case you must embrace them, i. e., throw yourself recklessly out upon them, without a mental reservation and trust them world without end. Then the next step is to confess them and your utmost confidence in the God 42. TRUMPET BLASTS. Who made them, and gave them, to a poor lost world. Continue to hold on to God and the Holy Spirit will seal the promise upon your heart, and faith will sieze it, as with iron hooks, until all hell cannot shake you loose. Such a faith as this, if you are a sinner seek- ing the divine favor, and pardon from all your sins, will sweep you through the impenetrable hedge of sin into the beautiful plains of regeneration, or con- version. But at this point the question arises, What is conversion, or regeneration? And what are some of the features and characteristics of this God-given life planted in the human soul. 1. Regeneration, as set forth in the Scriptures is a real heart-felt, Spirit-recognized, and God-given experience. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost," Titus 3:5. The Greek word in this passage is imlingenesia, and means new birth, re- generation, the restoration of the perfect state of things, etc. Just as you entered into and became a member of your earthly father's family, by the pro- cess of natural generation and physical birth, so you enter into and become a member of your heavenly Father's family, i. e., the family of God, by the pro- cess of spiritual regeneration and the new spiritual birth. Hence, the language of Jesus : "Except a man FAITH AND REGENERATION. 43. be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God," John 3:5. And, just as the physical birth is accompanied by physical life, and the new born babe manifests that life, so the new spiritual birth is accompanied by spiritual lire and its manifestations. Hence, the language: "And we are His witnesses of these things: and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Kim", Acts 5: 32. This God- given life planted in the dead soul (All unconverted people are as dead as a devil in hell, until quickened by divine power) causes its possesser to love the thing3 once hated, and hate the things once loved. Hence, the language : "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature : old things are passed away; behold, all things are be* come new," 2 Cor. 5:17. Hallelujah to the Lamb. He is a new creation, yea, a new created spiritual sun, created to shine on uncreated spiritual worlds and warm them into being. Glory to God forever. This experience is real. You know when you receiv- ed it, where you received it, how you received it, and what you have, for it is written: "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the chil- dren of God," Rom. 8:16. And again, "We know [Hallelujah!] that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren," 1 John 3:14. 2. The regenerated life is replete with joy and 44. TRUMPET BLASTS. gladness. There is abundant proof of this statement, both in the Bible and human testimony. When Phil- ip, that red hot, Pentecost evangelist went down to the old heathen city of Samaria, (The Samaritans were not only heathens, but irreconcilable enemies of the Jews) and preached Christ unto them until "un- clean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many that were possessed", a mighty Pentecost re- vival broke out and the record says: "There was great joy in that city," Acts 8:8. And what else could be expected but a marked manifestation of di- vine joy and gladness in the countenance, speech, conduct and life of that poor, lost, hell -bound soul whose strong chains of slavery have just been broken by the omnipotent Saviour, and whose broken and contrite spirit has been set at liberty and healed? A new life enters into him, a bright light floods his soul, a beautiful spiritual world opens up before him, and a cloud burst of divine power and glory breaks in upon him and he, like Thomas, cries: "My Lord and my God." With the Psalmist David, the sweet singer of Israel, he can truthfully say; "Thou hast put glad- ness in my heart". Do you wonder that he laughs, cries, sings, shouts, claps his hands for joy, etc., when he knows, better than anything in this world, that all the past is under the precious blood of Jesus, that he stands personally clean before God and man, FAITH AND REGENERATION. 45. and that ho holds a clear title to a mansion in the beautiful Eden above? Glory. 3. The experience of regeneration puts resurrec- tion life and power into its possessor. It turns him from the tomb of Jesus, whither he has gone with "sweet spices" to "anoint Him", and he finds himself running in the opposite direction to meet his risen Lord. Being "reconciled to God", which is the starting point in this new God -given life, and being "in Christ", which is the sphere of his spiritual ac- tivity, and living not to himself, but "unto Him" which is the New Object, and feeling the resurrection life of Him "Who died for them, and rose again", which is the power that sustains this wonderful life, he has some conception of that beautiful Scripture which says : "That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body," 2 Cor. 4:10. Hallelu- jah to the Lambc The "lost is found", the "dead is alive" and there is joy among the angels. "Like- wise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth," Luke 15:10. His life is in God and from God, for in Him he lives, and moves and has his being. This is rich, sweet, blessed, glorious and delightful, but it is not all that God has for us. 4. This beautiful experience lifts one above this poor lost world and sin. "Whosoever is born of 46. TKUMPET BLASTS. God doth not commit sin ; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God," 1 John 3:9. "Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him." 1 John 3:6. There are two kinds of religion in the world, God's and the devil's. God's religion, or salvation, as seen in the above Scripture, saves us from all of our sins: while the devil's relig- ion, which is a sinning religion, leaves us in our sins, freezing us to death in this world, and burning us to death in the next. The popular preacher, who stands in the modern pulpit, declares with stentorian voice that no man ever did, or ever will be able to live with- out sin, and thus proves beyond the possibility of a caviJ, that he is a child of hell, a prophet of Baal, a devil's preacher, and on a bee line to hell fire, for it is written, that, "He that committeth sin is of the devil," 1 John 3:8. And again we read, "Whoso- ever committeth sin is the servant of sin," John 8^*34. But blessed be God, there is a glorious deliverance from all sin, and it is experienced in the first work of grace, or the "new birth". And this was Christ's mission into the world, for the inspired record says, "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil," 1 John 3:8. "And in this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil," 1 John 3:10. In what? FAITH AXD REGENERATION. 47, In the question of sinning and Jiving without sin. Please read the narrative in 1 John 3:6 to 10. To manifest is to reveal. Hence in this they are reveal- ed, namely, God's children live without sin, while the devil's children live in sin. Reader, to which class do you belong? Chapter V. CONSECRATION AND SANCTIFICATION. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God," etc. "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly." Horn. 12:1. 1 Thess. 5:23. There are various theories, opinions, notions, ideas, etc., afloat as touching the question of personal consecration. There are some who laugh and hoot at the idea and tell us there is no such thing at all. There is another class who declare with stentorian voice that when they bowed at the feet of Jesus and asked Him for pardon s ? and salvation, they consecrated their all to^God. S'ill another class hold it to be true that you must consecrate every day, during your probationary state, and that this almost endless task will not cease this side the grave. None of these are correct nor in harmony with the Scriptures, and the sacred writings. The act of personal, practical consecration is by no means unknown in the Scriptures. In the eighth chapter of the book of Lev. we have the account of CONSECRATION AND SANCTIFICATION. 49. the consecration of Aaron and his sons. As touching this consecration, five things are worthy of note: The first was the publicity of the affair. "Gather thou all the congregation together," etc. Verse s. The next act was washing them with water. "And Moses brought Aaron and bis sons, and washed them with water." Verso 6. This act was followed by the placing of the linen garments upon them. "Now Moses brought Aaron's sons and put coats upon them," etc. Verse 13. The fourth step was to anoint Aaron and his sons with the holy anointing oil. "'And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him." Verse 12. See verse 30 for the anointing of his sons. The last act was putting on the blood. "And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar and sprinkled it upon Aaron and upon his gar- ments, and upon his sons and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him." Verse 30. All this is significient. The publicity of their consecration brings out the truth that we can- not be consecrated to God, and His service, and sanc- tified wholly, with out the fact being made known and published abroad. There washing is a beautiful illustration of the "washing of regeneration". Being clothed with the "holy garments" is a figure of the white robe of holiness that God gives to those who 50. TRUMPET BLASTS. consecrate themselves and all they have to him. Anointing them with the "anointing oil", which is an emblem of the HoJy Spirit, is an illustration oi receiv- ing the Holy Ghost. The putting on of the blood, is a strong figure of the second application of the blood of Jesus to the heart of the consecrated believer, which cleanses from "all sin". The fact that tne poor, lost sinner has nothing to consecrate, and does not do so when he conies to God to be saved, and that the saved believer does not con- secrate every day, but makes an eternal offering of himself and all he has to God, is also set forth in the same incident. Aaron's sons were not sinners, but saved believers before their consecration. For ifc is a settled fact that they were taken "from among the children of Israel", (See Ex. 28:1.) to serve in this capacity. And it is also an evident truth that these same children of Israel, from whom they were select- ed, were God's people; for God had chosen them, prior to this, and had led them out of the land of Egypt across the Red Sea even to Mount Sinai. A& soon as they reached "the desert of Sinai", God said to Moses: "Ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people." Ex. 19:5. Hence you see that it is as clear as the noonday sun, that these men of whom we are speaking, were God's faithful, willing, obedient children prior to their consecration. There- fore we conclude that as "there is no respect of per- CONSECRATION AND SANCTIPICATION. 51. sons with God", He requires all His children to con- secrate themselves, and all they have to Him, in order that He may sanctify them wholly, even as He did in this case with His ancient people. And as touching the question of their personal consecration, it was not for an hour, nor for a day, nor was it to be repeat- ed every day, but it was for the entire period of their life, once and for all. So the record teaches, and so we believe, But before we leave the question of personal, and practical consecration let us look at one or two New Testament Scriptures. Here is one of them: "Yield yourselves unto God, as those who are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of right- eousness unto God." Rom. 6:13. It is of special im- portance that we should notice that the people who are here addressed are "those who are alive from the dead". Hence they are not sinners, for the un- saved are "dead in trespasses and sins", but these are "alive from the dead", i. e., they are truly con- verted, or regenerated. And yet these very same people are commanded to "yield unto God". Hence Bible consecration is a yielding of yourself unto God. Turn over to God your name, talents, time, reputa- tion, property, family, good works, future, all you know, all you don't know, ail you ever will know, all you have, all you haven't, and all you ever will have. In a word, place your will, as touching everything in 52. TRUMPET BLASTS. your life, yea, everything that could possibly come up during your probationary state, upon the Divine altar and the fire will fall. God is after your will. He wants it. When He gets chat He has all there is of you. Here is another Scripture: "I beseech you, there- fore, brethren by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, ... .that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God." Rom. 12:1,2. The people here addressed are "brethren", i. e., saved believers, and not "sinners". They are to present their "bodies a living sacrifice" (not a dead sacrifice), and this is to be done that they may prove the "perfect will of God". And what is His will? "This is the will of God, even your sancti- fication." 1 Thess. 4:3. Hence you see that the Scriptures forever settle it, that, first we repent and believe and are regenerated. Then we consecrate ourselves and all we have to God, and believe, ("Sanctified by faith that is in me." Acts 26:18.) and are sanctified wholly. Bat what is sanctification? And what does it do for the child of God? 1. Itcleanseth. No individual lives any length of time in the regenerated life who does not make the discovery that there is something left in the heart that ought not to be there. This something is car- nality, and the following are some of its traits: A secret spirit of pride. An important spirit. An inde- CONSECRATION AND SANCTIFICATION. 53. pendent spirit. A real Love of human praise. The stirrings and uprisings of anger and impatience. A touchy, sensitive spirit. A disposition to resent, and to retaliate when reproved, corrected, or con- tradicted. Sharp heated flings and stinging state- ments hurled at another. A self-willed disposition. A stubborn, un teachable spirit. Harsh, sarcastic, caustic expressions. A spirit that commands and drives. A disposition to find fault, criticise, and to pick flaws when set aside and unnoticed. A peevish, fretful spirit. A man-fearing spirit. A fear of faces. A fear of failure. A fear of persecution, pov- erty, sickness, death, and the judgment. A jealous disposition. A secret disposition of envy shut up in your own soul. A disposition to speak of the faults, blunders, mistakes, errors, failures, a' id idiosyncra- cies, rather than the gifts and virtues of those more talented and appreciated than yourself. A spirit of doubt and discouragement in times of pressure and opposition. A lack of quietness and confidence. A disposition to worry, fret, stew, and complain in the midst of pain, or poverty, or at the dispensation of divine providence. A lack of concern for poor lost souls. A dryness, indifference, and a lack of power with God and man, These are a few of the many traits of carnality. But glory to Jesus, all this unclean brood, with evil thoughts and evil tempers, etc.. is taken out when we are sanctified wholly, be- 54. TRUMPET BLASTS. cause "the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanseth us from all sin.'' 1 John 1 :7. The Psalmist David asks the question, "Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?" Here is the answer: "He that hath clean hands and a pure heart." Psa. 24:3, 4. Clean, Glory to God! Clean in thought, word, and in act; clean in your home life, private life, public life, business life, and church life. This is sanctification. This is holiness. Do you en- joy it? Have you the goods in stock? 2. The next step after the cleansing is the fill- ing. "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:4. They were filled, not with theory, nor doctrine, nor the lying tradi- tions of men, but with the personal Holy Ghost. They were filled, not with selfishness, nor narrowness, nor envy, nor bitterness, but with the Holy Ghost. They were filled, not with strife, nor jealousy, nor division, nor hatred, nor malice, but with God, the Holy Ghost. They were filled, not with Methodism, nor Presby- terianism. nor Congregationalism, nor Campbellism, nor sectarianism; they were simply filled with the Holy Ghost. He possessed their entire being, and taking His seat upon the throne of their heart, be- gan to reign without a rival. It was brue in their case, and it must be so in ours. And now that the personal Holy Ghost has entered the purified heart CONSECRATION AND SANCT1FICATION. 55. to abide, live, and rule forever, He continues to pour into the cleansed heart the sweet, tender, melting love of God, for it is written. "The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which, is given unto us. " Rom. 5:5. Hallelujah to the Lamb! 3. The next step in the divine catalogue is the empowering for service. Cleansing, filling, and em- powering, is the divine order. "But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you." Acts 1:8. The revised version reads, "But ye shall receive power when the Holy Ghost is come upon you." You often hear people say, "1 am sanctified, but I have uot received the Holy Ghost." "I am sanctified, but I have not received the enduement of power.". What an absurdity! Consummate fool- ishness! The above Scripture knocks this human theory clear out beyond the North pole. If you are sanctified wholly, you have the Holy Ghost, and if you have the Holy Ghost you have the power, for God positively declares that you receive the pow- er when the Holy Ghost comes upon you. It was so in the case of the disciples, (Read the 2nd chapter of Acts for proof tnat they received power when they received the Holy Ghost,) and it must be true in our case. Away with the lying traditions of men, and let us stick to the blessed Bible. But what about this power? All kinds of no- tions, ideas, and human theories are afloat as to what 56. TRUMPET BLASTS. it really is. Some think it is intellectuality, hypnot- ism, (the power of mind over mind) emotionalism, shouting, screaming, hollowing, running, jumping, etc. Others hold it to be true, that it is the power of numbers, and the power of wealth, and the power of brains. But all these human theories are incorrect, and misleading. It is no proof that simply because men have any, or all of the things mentioned above, that they are in possession of this power. Because history proves that men have had all of these things, and yet none of this power. This power is divine; it is unearthly, that is, it does not spring up from the earth; nor is it of the earth; (albeit it is for those who dwell upon the earth) nor is it to be secured from man, nor yet given by him to his feliowmen. It is of God, and from God. He alone can give it. To have this power means to have the Holy Spirit, to know the Spirit, to hear the Spirit, and to obey the Spirit. With this power you are a success, but with- out it you are doomed to everlasting defeat. He, the Holy Ghost will give you power to do right, power to reject wrong, power to sing, pray, testify, exhort, and preach; power over your own self, power over your enemies, yea, power with God and men. With the apostle Paul we feel like saying, "Thanks be un- to God for His unspeakable gift." Chapter VI. DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. "The rich man also died and was buried, and in hell he lift up his eyes being in torments." Luke 16:23. "The judg- ment was set, and the books were opened," Dan. 7:10. God is the author of all that is pure, holy and good. He is the source of all wisdom, knowledge and understanding. He is the center of all light, life and consciousness. He made this Bible and He made it just right. It is true that He committed the task of writing it, to men, but these '"holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost," 2 Peter 1:21. This precious Book bears the stamp of its Maker, is divine in its origin and makeup, is a part of the di- vine mind and will, as revealed to man, and is true, absolutely true. It tells of a holy God, a holy heav- en, and how we may lead a holy life. It also tells of a lurid, liquid * 'lake of fire and brimstone", which has been "prepared for the devil and his angels", and which will be the final abode of all the individ- uals, families, nations and races of mankind who "know not God and that obey not the Gospel of our 58. TRUMPET BLASTS. Lord Jesus Christ," 2 Thess. 1 :8. While it is a lamentable fact that in these days of swift, appalling apostasy, the Bible doctrine of a lit- eral hell, for all the finally impenitent is scarcely ever preached from the modern pulpit, and by the greater part of both the preachers and people is hooted and jeered at, yet it does not change the solemn, God- given truth that there is A hell, an awful hell, an indescribable hell. Just as certain as there is a God, a blessed Jesus, a delightful Holy Ghost, a beautiful heaven and "a holy people", so there is an Awful hell, a "bottomless pit", a "lake of fire and brimstone". God says so, and He knows. "Let God be true, but every man a liar", Rom. 3:4. This blessed Bible from Genesis, the beginning, to Rev- elation, the end, is full of awful curses for the diso- bedient, and blessings for the obedient. To those who repent and turn away from their sins and the evil of their doings, it holds out the most delightful, sweet, and precious promises of joy, peace, rest and happiness, both in the life which now is, and in that which is to come. But to the lawless, the disobedi- ent, and the impenitent sinner there is but one thing held before him, and that is a boiling, hissing, lurid, liquid "lake of fire and brimstone", yea, "a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries," Heb. 10:27. The awful judgments of God against the evil doer, DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. 59. and the hell fire and brimstone that awaits the finally impenitent, thunders from the Decalogue, roars through the prophe3ies, rumbles in the] writings of the four evangelists, flashes in the Epistles, and pours forth from the Revelation, Hell is just the opposite to heaven. Hell is be- neath us, heaven is above us. According to the teaching of the Scripture, both places are definitely located. The one is pure, clean, holy, beautiful,, bright, peaceful, joyous, delightful, rich, sweet, and full of glory : while the other is vile, corrupt, filthy, dark, frightful, hideous, and where sorrow, sadness, misery, woe, and pain hold sway: yea, where "there shall be weeping and gnashiug of teeth" God de- clares there is such a place and He certainly knows. He further states that the unfortunate, unhappy in- habitants of those fiery regions "shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out with- out mixture into the cup of his indignation : and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb; and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name," Rev. 14:10,11. Note the expression "forever and ever". In Rev. 15:7, we have the same expression "forever and ever". In the first passage it refers to the dura- ~60. TRUMPET BLASTS. tion of the punishment of the wicked : while in the second it shows the eternity of God. The Greek in the first passage is eis ainos aionon, while in the sec- ond it is eis toys aionos ton aionon, the articles toys and ton being omitted in the first passage but understood, and translated the same in each. The above combination of Greek, words means UNTO THE AGES OF THE AGES, Or THE ETERNITIES OF THE eternities, or forever and ever. Hence you can see at a glance, that the punishment of the wicked in hell is co- eternal with the existence of God. There is absolutely no escape from this truth. How long does God live? Answer, unto the ages of the ages, or THE ETERNITIES OF THE ETERNITIES, Or FOREVER AND ever. How long does their ' 'smoke of their torment'' ascend? Answer, unto the ages of the ages, or THE ETERNITIES OF THE ETERNITIES, Or FOREVER AND ever. So the Bible teaches and so we believe. Away with this devilish doctrine of the annihilation of the wicked. Those who hold this devilish doctrine to be true, are placed in a very embarrassing position, for according to their theory, if the wicked are to be annihilated, then the time must certainly come when God Himself will cease to exist, for He positively de- clares in the above Scriptures that the one exists as long as the other. If He lives forever, and the in- spired record says He does, then the wicked burn in hell foreyer, and they do. He says so, and He DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. 61. knows. It is much better to believe God than the lying traditions of men. "God is not a man that He should lie, nor the son of man that He should repent". Death, hell and the judgment Let us take a peep at some of the judgments of God and see if He hates sin or not. Behold the first pair, Father Adam and Mother Eve, They believed the devil, disobeyed God's holy law and commandment, fell into sin and hid "amongst the trees of the garden". God ap- peared on the scene, searched them out, they made their confession and the three-fold curse fell, the first on the woman, the second on the serpent and the third on the man ; and the once happy pair were driven from the beautiful garden, and both the "cherubims" and the "flaming sword which turned every way to keep the way of the tree of life" ap- peared. Cain, the first murderer slew his brother Abel, and quickly the withering, blighting, anathema of God Almighty fell upon his unprotected head: "A fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth." The poor man overwhelmed with sorrow and grief cried: "My punishment is greater than I can bear". Sin is the most costly thing in all the universe. God help us to flee from it as we would from the hiss- ing viper that is coiled and ready to sting us to death. The antedeluvian world became vile, corrupt,, depraved, debauched, and reached a climax in re- 62. TRUMPET BLASTS. jecting God and His truth. God, in condescending mercy, instructed Noah to build an ark and preach righteousness, truth and holiness to the outlaws. He obeyed, entered the ark with his wife, his three sons and their wives, "and the Lord shut him in." The clouds gathered, the thunder roared, the light- ning flashed, "the windows of heaven were opened", and "all the fountains of the great deep were broken up", and divine castigation and retribution poured forth in a stream of unmitigated, indescribable wrath upon the unprotected heads of those hood- winked, deluded thousands, and only eight (Those in the ark) were left to tell the tale; all the rest going down quick into hell, except the little infants, who, of course were saved. The men of Sodom and Gomorrah were "wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.*' Their sin became "very grievous," so much so that the Lord, after He had sent Lot, his wife, and his two daughters out of the city, (His wife became a pillar of salt because she looked back) "rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven," and another multitude of souls went wailing into the nethermost hell. Koran, Dathan, and Abiram three anti-holiness preachers (See Numbers 16.) incited a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, and two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. 63. men of renown, joined them. These rebels offered strange incense before the Lord. God said to Moses and Aaron, "Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I id ay consume them in a mo- ment. " They obeyed God, and the earth opened her mouth, and these wicked men, they and all that ap- pertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them. This fearful castigation and divine retribution was followed by another dreadful judgment. "And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense." Appalling scene! Frightful spectacle! Another awful judgment fell upon the congregation. The next day they declared that Moses and Aaron had slain the Lord's people. The whole congregation of the people rose up against these men of God. and the wrath of a sin-avenging God burst forth upon them like a mighty cyclone of fire. Aaron "stood between the dead and living," and made "an atonement" for them; but before "the plague was stayed" 14,000 were destroyed, These are only a few of the many swift and aw- ful judgments of God against wicked, rebellious sin- ners, as set forth in the book of God. but they are enough to show that God hates sin, and His way of dealing with those who trample His great mercies under their unhallowed feet, and refuse to love, and obey Him. If it should be asked whv God has dealt 64. TRUMPET BLASTS. thus with the disobedient, the unthankful, and the unholy, as set forth in these Bible pictures, here is the answer: "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment: and spared not the old world, but saved Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteous- ness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the un- godly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them [mark this language] an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly.'" 2 Pet. 2:4-6. But before leaving this part of the subject, let me call your attention to some modern judgments of God. Just a few years ago a tidal wave swept the Isle of Java, and 4,000 sinners were swept into eter- nity, to stand in the presence of a thrice holy God, and be judged by Him, "with whom there is no vari- ableness neither shadow of turning." Our warship, Wateree was anchored in the haibor of Iquique, Peru. Suddenly there was an earthquake, a tidal wave, a volcanic eruption, and the ship was carried by the wall of waters one mile in shore, and not a man was hurt. But later when the wave returned to the sea it swept 10,000 souls into eternity. What an awful judgmeat! Who denies it? Reader, there is a God, a heaven, and an awful helJ. Take heed! Beware! Look out, or you will drop into the pit of everlasting burnings. Chapter VII. DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT, Continued. Last year (1905) I passed through Johnstown Pa. where God sent one of His literal and awful judg- ments. That undescribable flood came down upon that God-defying, Christ-rejecting city with an almost unlimited, irresistible vengeance, and fury, and in one hour swept five hundred sinners into eternity. That awf ul judgment was a literal hell of water. The houses, with their frightened inhabitants, went crashing down the Conemaugh River, and were hurled against the piers of the Pennsylvania railroad bridge, only to be shattered to pieces, and to burn them alive. These poor victims, caught in this death trap, perished by thousands, by fire and by water, while inhuman monsters, called men, ravished dead women, mutilated, robbed, and murdered the wound- ed and dying to get money and jewels from their victims. It became necessary to call out the State troops to save the wounded, the dying, the burning victims, to protect the living from the inhuman treat- ment of demon-posessed men, and to give the dead a decent burial. What was this but a literal hell? And God sent it. But He sent them warning before He sent this awful judgment. The secular papers did 66. TRUMPET BLASTS. not tell all the truth. God sent one of His faithful servants who spent two weeks on the streets of that wicked city, preaching the everlasting gospel of the Son of God, and warning the people of the awful judgment that God would send, unless they repented and turned away from their sins. How did they re- ceive the message and the God-sent messenger? Did they, like the old ancient heathen city of Nineveh, repent, sitting in sackcloth and ashes? Nay, would to God they had. But instead of this, they scoffed, jeered, laughed, hooted, etc., and then took God's messenger and locked him up in jail. But God al- ways looks after His own, and protects His own interests. Although the jail was in the path of the severe judgment, and everything went down around it, yet it stood and the prisoner was safe. After the awful judgment of lire and water had wrought its fearful havoc of wreck and ruin, they brought the preacher out and turned him loose, and let him go, finding, when it was too late, that his message was only too true. Wake up sinner or you, too, will soon find your Johnstown flood of death, hell and the judgment. A few years ago a company of lawless, Sabbath breakers went out on lake Pepin, on the waters of the upper Mississippi, and spent the time in drinking, carousing, and desecrating God's holy day. God showed His disapproval by coming down out of the DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. 67. sky and twisting a black vortex of His wrath. The cyclone struck the gay, giddy, lawless party, over- turned the vessel and they were drowned. But there were in that company, a /ew strong men who climbed upon the overturned hull to save their lives. God saw it. The funnel shaped cloud stopped, returned a second time and completed the awful judgment of an angry God against those wicked sinners, and not a single person was left to tell the tale. Another illustration of death, hell and the judgment. Look out sinner or you will go wailing into the "bottom- less pit". In 1886 the state of Wisconsin, by Legislative enactment, expelled the word of God from the public schools, repealed the Prohibitory Law, turned the whiskey murder-mills loose for revenue, and turned the state over to this hell on wheels. They spit on God's blessed book, and He sent His awful judgment. During the summer of that year a circus, which is one of the open doors to hell, came to New Richmond, Wisconsin, and the gay, giddy crowd came to see the show. God twisted a vortex of His vengeance, and sent a raging cyclone, which is a puff of His wrath, and cut a swath through that town, wounding or kill- ing one hundred and fifty sinners. Those who were present testify that it was a literal hell on earth. Sinner friend, traveler to the judgment bar of God, take heed, and remember that your day of mercy 68. TRUMPET BLASTS. will soon be gone forever, and you, too, will be cut off without hope and without mercy. A soldier passed through the Civil War and came home with- out a scratch. Many times God had spoken to him about the eternal interests of his blood-bought, judg- ment-bound, and eternity-destined soul. But he spurned the callings of God and continued in his course of sin. One day while walking down the street, as he passed a brick building, where the brick layers were at work, a brick fell, struck him on the head and he was instantly killed, and went down quick into the pit. Do you see it? His day of grace was past. The space of time allotted to him to repent was gone. "And I gave her space to repent of her forni- cation; and she repented not." Rev. 2:1. In 1887 God sent His judgment upon Jamestown, North Dakota. At that time there were two brew- eries in the town. A few saints got together and be- gan to cry to God for deliverance from the whiskey traffic. God answered their prayers by sending a whirling cyclone, a vortex of His wrath, straight through the city. No one was hurt, but the brewery was blown into pieces, and dumped into the James river. The following year the other brewery was burned, and two years later, or in 1889, the licensed party was defeated, and the prohibitory law went into effect. Our own God answers prayer. He and His truth are marching on. Help us praise Him. "Cry DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. 69. out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion : for great is the holy one of Israel in the midst of thee, " Isa. 12:6. A few years ago Hinckley, Minn, was destroyed by a forest fire and hundreds perished, and were swept into eternity without God and without the nec- essary preparation of heart to meet Him in peace. But before this awful judgment of the literal, materiaL hell-lire swept them off the probationary stage of action, God gave them warning, and a chance to be saved. On Sabbath preceeding the destruction of that place, five different pastors, without connivance, preached from the text, "prepare to meet thy God". Like Sodom, they were warned, and then rejecting God, His messengers, and His message, they, like the ancient city, were destroyed. Another proof that God's judgments are'in all the earth. Reader, wake up before you drop into hell fire and brim- stone. One of the most awful, swift and terrible judg- ments of modern times, was the utter destruction of St. Pierre on the island of Martinique, by the vol- canic eruption of Mount Pelee, which took place at seven fifty o'clock on the morning of May 8th, 1902. An eye-witness gives the following graphic descrip- tion of Mount Pelee, and its harvest of death. He says: "I saw Sb. Pierre destroyed. It was blotted out by one great flash of fire. Nearly 40,000 persons were all killed at once. Out of eighteen vessels lying 70. TRUMPET BLASTS. in the roads only one, the British Steamship Rod- dam, escaped, and she, I hear, lost more than half on board. It was a dying crew that took her out. "Our boat s the Roraima, of the Quebec line, arrived at St. Pierre early Thursday morning. For hours before we entered the roadstead, we could see names and smoke rising from Mount Pelee. No one on board had any idea of danger. Captain G. T. Muggah was on the bridge, and all hands got on deck to see the show. "The spectacle was magnificent. As we ap- proached St. Pierre we could distinguish the rolling and leaping of the red flames that belched from the mountain in huge volumes and gushed high into the sky. Enormous clouds of black smoke hung over the volcano. "When we anchored at St. Pierre I noticed the cable steamship Grappler, the Roddam, three or four American schooners and a number of Italian and Norwegian barks. The flames were then spurting straight up in the air, now and then waving to one side or the other for a moment and again leaping suddenly higher up. "There was a constant muffled roar. It was like the biggest oil refinery in the world burning up on the mountain top. There was a tremendous explo- sion about 7:45 o'clock, soon after we got in. The mountain w T as blown to pieces. There was no warn- DEATH, HELL AND THE JUDGMENT. 71. ing. The side of the volcano was ripped out, and there was hurled straight toward us a solid wall of name. It sounded like thousands of cannon. { 'The wave of fire was on us and over us like a lightning flash. It was like a hurricane of fire. I saw it strike the cable steam ship Grappler broad side and capsize her. From end to end she burst into flames and then sank. The fire rolled in mass straight down St. Pierre and the shipping. The town vanish- ed before our eyes and the air grew stifling hot, and we were in the thick of it. ' ! Whereever the mass of fire struck the sea the water .boiled and sent up vast clouds of steam. The sea was torn into huge whirlpools that careened to- ward the open sea .... "The blast of fire from the volcano lasted only a few minutes. It shriveled and set fire to every thing it touched. Thousands of casks of rum were stored in St. Pierre and these were exploded by the terrific heat. The burning rum ran in streams down every street and out to the sea. This blazing rum set fire to the Eoraima several times. Before the volcano burst the landings of St. Pierre were crowded with people. After the explosion not one human being was seen on land. ' ? What a withering, blighting judgment and what a literal stream of hell fire and brimstone burst in 72. TRUMPET BLASTS, upon that doomed city, with its ten thousand beauti- ful home,?, numerous factories, and more than thirty thousand inhabitants. You say "how aw 7 ful". In- deed. But did you know that before God sent this dreadful judgment upon the inhabitants of this wicked city, that He sent missionaries to preach Je- sus to them and urged them to accept God as their Father, Jesus as their Saviour, and the Holy Ghost as their Comforter? But what did they do? They rejected the messengers and the message, and it is reported that after the missionaries left, they cruci- fied a pig in derision of God, His ministers and His truth. And now what? They spit on God's book, and He baptized them with hell-fire and brimstone, and in five minutes more than 30,000 hutnan souls were swept into eternity, and no doubt nearly all of them went wailing down into a devil's hell. Another illustration of how God deals with sin, and rebellious sinners. God in mercy wake us up. But the time would fail me to tell of the Galves- ton disaster, the San-Francisco earthquake, the earth- quake in Chili, South America, etc. and the thous- ands of lives lost and the millions of dollars worth of property destroyed. Enough has been said, and brought to view to show that God hates sin. His judgments are in all the earth, and sin — well, He will scald it in the burning vitriol of His wrath, and woe to the man or woman with whom sin is found. CHAPTER VII I. A PEN SKETCH OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. I was born in Tuscola, Douglas County, 111., Oct. 5. 1873. When only two years of age I was kicked on my right temple, by a rough shod horse, and received an ugly wound, which came very near ending my life. Father hastened for the doctor, who lived a distance of five miles. During this time I lay and bled profusely. When they returned, the physician told my parents he had no hope for my life, and thought it out of the question for me to re- cover. But our own God, in infinite mercy, willed it otherwise. However, the scar I received from that wound will go with me to ihe grave, unless Jesus should come for His Bride before I fall on sleep, in which event I fully expect to meet Him and the blood washed throng in the air. Shortly after the above incident my father lost his team, cow, etc, by going security for another man, and we were turned out into the streets, by the officers, and had nothing of value left. An uncle of mine who lived in Rice County, Kansas loaned my father money enough to pay his and mother's way to that new country. We spent two full years in those parts and passed through many severe trials and hardships of various kinds. 74. TRUMPET BLASTS. Our next move was to Kingman County, Kansas, where father took one hundred and sixty acres of land, located twelve miles south west of Kingman City, Kansas. During the years we spent there, we had an overflowing experience of trials, difficulties, afflictions, perplexities and hardships, all of which are common to the frontier life. The first winter we froze our feet; that winter we had nothing to burn, in the way of fuel, but sunflowers, blue joint grass, tumble weeds, etc. Then came the living on corn meal stirred up with water, (we were thankful for both the meal and the water) passing through a fear- ful cyclone, which destroyed our house, carrying away our bedding, clothing, etc., and leaving us nearly naked, and many other things of which space forbids the mention. At this time father and mother were members of the U. B. denomination, but knew very little about God and salvation. However, in the providence of God, he sent some Holy Ghost preachers into our community, and my mother and afterwards my father were beautifully saved and powerfully sancti- fied. For days after father's sanctincation he had but little desire for food and sleep, and spent his time in shouting the praises of God (he is more de- monstrative than his son,) This so annoyed the neighbors that they held a meeting, decided he had gone crazy, and thought it would be wise to take PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 75. some steps toward sending him away to a place of safety. But a sister (God bless her soul if she is still alive) whose heart God had touched, arose and declared she would not, for her right arm, lift her voice against him. She then closed by saying she wished, that not only herself, but all the rest were just as crazy, (if this they so desired to call it) as was my father. So the idea of sending him away was abandoned and he went on his way rejoicing. It was during this revival tide which lasted for a considerable length of time, both in our immediate neighborhood, and in an adjoining one live miles away, that God touched my heart, by His divine omnipotent Spirit, and I was powerfully saved from all my sins. I was just eleven years old. Although the persecutions were severe from my school mates (at one time 1 left the school because of them) God , helped me to testify, exhort and warn the people of their danger, blessed my labor of love and gave me some fruit. To Father, Son and Holy Ghost be all the glory. Soon after my conversion father had another misfortune and practically lost his farm. He then moved to Mead County, Kansas and filed on another one hundred and sixty acres of land, twelve miles north west of Englewood. Because of continued failures in the crops, w 7 e were compelled to w T ork by the day, part of the time, to make a living for the 76. TRUMPET BLASTS. family. When I was thirteen years of age we went to work on the grade of the Rock Island railroad five miles west of Mead Center, Kansas. Here I began to associate with bad company, listened to the devil, grieved the Spirit of God, disobeyed the holy com- mandment, backslid, lost my sweet experience, ran away from home, broke my mother's heart, and started on a Hee line for hell. For nine years I trav- eled north, east, west and south seeking rest, but finding none. Five different times I went into busi- ness for myself, and for a time it seemed that [ would be successful. But as suddenly as I entered, as quickly :I would lose all I had. It was during these times I would become desperate, give vent to blasphemous utterances, and declare I was the most unfortunate and wretched man on earth. Then I took to drinking, (only moderately however) to gamb- ling, to smoking, etc., and tried to drown my God- given convictions. One time I went about fifteen hundred miles from my home, and hoped by so doing to escape the influence of my mother's prayers. But it was useless, for in my quiet moments an inward voice would say: "Arthur, your mother is still pray- ing for you." Why was this? Ah, my mother had hold of God and His promises, and there were others who had hold of Him too. On one occasion when father became discouraged, and doubted whether I ever would be saved, mother's faith arose with the PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 75. test and she declared that she would live to see me saved and hearjrne preach the Gospel. And she did. She is yet alive and on the hallelujah line. Glory to God for a mother's faith and prayer, Mothers, do not be discouraged, but continue to hold on to Gocl for your children. He will bring them in yet. Time rolled on. Five successive failures in crops, and father left that part of the country and moved to Ford County, Kansas, six miles northeast of Dodge City. He spent two years there and then moved to Ft. Scott, Kansas. It was in this city dur- ing the spring of 1895 that Major Cole, of New York City, opened a large tabernacle meeting, I was in a little town twelve miles east of Jefferson City, Mo., when I received an urgent letter fiom my father, telling me to come home at once, and accept a posi- tion that he had secured for me with a Cincinnati firm. On reaching my home I found the town con- siderably stirred over the BIG POPULAR REVIV- AL, and my people and relatives were speaking of it anon and again. I was not a church goer, and was proud of the fact that I had not been in a religious service for nearly one year. After repeated, urgent invitations, I consented to go to the meeting and see for myself. But I got in such trouble in that service, that I left in a rage, declaring in my own heart '.hat I never would return. Several days passed before I did 78. TRUMPET BLASTS. return. During the interval between my first and second visit to the tabernacle meeting, my father unconsciously threw a harpoon into my proud soul, that stuck like a clinched nail in a board and refused to come out. It was on Sabbath afternoon. As I came up the back way, I noticed him sitting on the back porch with pencil and paper in hand, busily engaged in writing. I asked him what he was doing. He answered: "Writing a letter to Jesus for my children." This went into my heart like a dagger, and I turned and left the place as quickly as I had come. "Writing a letter to Jesus for my children", continued to ring in my soul and I could not get away from it. Nor did I get rid of it until I found "Him of Whom Moses and the prophets did write." I made an effort to leave the city, but was prov- identially hindered. My last day in the devil's ser- vice, was spent at a base ball game in open wicked- ness and outbroken rebellion against God and His truth. On the evening of this day, after a heated discussion wiuh my cousin's wife, who told me that if I did not think enough of my mother, aunt, her and other relatives to go with them that night to the meeting; (I was to leave the next day) I was meaner than dirt, I consented to go. When we reached the tabernacle, she started down the aisle, and told me to follow. It seemed to me that every eye was turn- ed on us. I obeyed, and she led me within three or PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 79. four seats of the front. I do not remember the text, nor anything of interest that the preacher said But when the invitation was given, she took me by the hand with tears streaming dowa her face, and trembling like a leaf shaken by the wind, she said, "Arthur, if you do not surrender, I will die." Just then the pastor of the Congregational denomination laid his hand upon my shoulder, and began to urge me to yield to my God-given convictions. I remain- ed firm, stubborn and unmoved. After some time he spoke to me. in substance as follows: "If you leave this town tomorrow an unsaved man, in two weeks your lifeless body will be brought back here for burial, and your poor soul will be lost. 5 ' Those words were driven by the Holy Ghost into the deep jungles of my poor, hungry, starving soul, and an inward voice, in substance, whispered: "Now or nev- er. This is your last call. Heaven or hell, which will you choose?" I hesitated, and God made me to understand as clear as the noonday sun, that unless I yielded then and there, I would cross the dead line, and seal my eternal doom. I said to the Holy Ghost, "I yield", and started to the altar, assisted by the good brother, who kept me from falling as I stag- gered toward the penitent form. A hard battle ensued. The pains of hell siezed me and I saw myself going down to death and ruin. The workers around the altar tried to persuade me 80. TRUMPET BLASTS. that I was saved, but I knew it was a lie. The evang- elist made an effort on the same line, which so stirred the hell that was in me, that I became very angry, arose to my feet, gave him a severe tongue lashing, but felt no better. Soon after, however, while stand- ing there on my feet, I became so desperately in ear- nest about the salvation of my soul, that I lost sight of the evangelist, the large congregation, and all my surroundings and began to call mightily on God to save me from a devil's hell. The Lord helped my faith to arise on the wings of earnest, importunate, persistent prayer, until I could say from the depths of my trembling soul: "I believe that Jesus saves me now." Instantly, heaven opened, the burden rolled down the hill of Difficulty, over the embankment of Unbelief, and tumbled into the river of Oblivion, and my soul was bathed in a sea of unearthly light. I eaped to the platform, (it would seat about two hun- dred) turned toward the audience and began to wit- ness to this wonderful salvation. For a number of years the fountain of tears in my soul had been dry, and I had been unable to weep. While telling the people what God had done for me, and the delight and joy of this sweet story of the cross, my eyes fell upon my precious mother, who was then seated just in front of the altar. Instantly my heart was broken, my spirit melted, and the great deep of my soul was broken up. I rushed toward her, embraced her, and PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 81. we baptized each other in our tears, which gushed from our eyes like falling rain. Oh, what a meeting, oh, what a time of rejoicing. Words are of no avail here. The prayers, tears, groanings, and longings of nine long years, which she and others had offered in my behalf, were suddenly answered. Words cannot describe, nor pen portray, the delight, glory, joy and satisfaction that filled our hearts. Hallelujah to the Lamb. The dead was alive, and the lost was found. This was on the night of May 20, 1895. All glory be to Jesus, Amen. I continued to testify, exhort, preach, etc., from house to house and sell goods for the firm in Cincin- nati, Ohio, for about three months, when in the city of Olathe, Kansas, with only twenty-five cents in my pocket, I knelt, at night, with another brother, under an electric light on the public square, and settled it with God that I would cut loose, at once, from every worldly pursuit and give my entire time to the Gospel ministry. This I did, In the fall of this year I entered the Baptist Col- lege at Ottawa, Kansas, but continued to preach the Gospel on the Sabbath, at two points, one four miles south, and the other four miles northwest of the city. Winter came on and I had nothing suitable, in the way of clothing, to keep me warm. Nor did I have any money with which to buy. The students in the school told me I was a fool to preach for those con- gregations, when they neglected to look after my temporal needs. But I had promised ^ God that I would tell no one about my "needs", except Him 82. TRUMPET BLASTS. alone, and I was determined to keep my promise, even if it took my life. One of God's dear children, (she is now my mother-in-law) at whose house I was staying, and working for my board, gave me her shawl to use for an overcoat, and through rain, mud, snow and storm J continued to go and preach the everlasting Gospel. One evening while I was engag- ed in prayer in my room, I was strongly impressed to make a list of the articles I needed, and as well as I remember the following is the list : One ten dollar overcoat; two suits of woolen underwear; one pair of shoes; one pair of overshoes ; and two outside shirts. Having made out the list, I presented it to the Lord, and an inward voice whispered in my soul that each article would be delivered, and I offered thanks for the same. My continued exposure caused me to take a se- vere cold, and in December I took very sick, went down to death's door and lay on the bed of languish- ing for three months, in which time I threw up an ul- cer from the pit of my stomach the size of a dollar, caused from my past drinking of intoxicating bever* ages, and hemorrhages set in. During this sickness my bill of goods (the clothing, etc.,) was delivered at my bedside, except the shoes and shirts which were brought in before I took sick. And all this in answer to prayer. Hallelujah to our own God. He does answer prayer. "But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Je- sus," Phil. 4:19. "I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread," Ps. 37:25. Chapter IX. A PEN SKETCH OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, CONTINUED. On the 16th clay of December. 1595, while lying on this bed of affliction, 1 entered into the solemn, God-given institution of holy wedlock, when I was not expected to live but a few hours. But the ever blessed God ordered it otherwise, spared my life, and raised me up. However, my condition of health was such that I found it necessary to put myself on a plain diet of corn meal, oatmeal, graham, etc., which I followed for one year. But during this, and the two following years, wife and 1 continued our labor of love in the evangelistic field, preaching to thous- ands, and seeing hundreds of souls blessedly saved. To Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be ail the glory. In August, 1898, I attended a Methodist camp- meeting at Wichita, Kansas, held by Bro. Carradine, of the South Methodist denomination, and God put me under unearthly conviction for holiness, notwith- standing the fact that I had honestly professed it for three years. As soon as I saw that I had been de- ceived, I set about at once to seek the -pearl of great 84. TRUMPET BLASTS. price." For three weeks, lacking one day, I groan- ed and cried to God for purity of heart. A few days after my eyes were opened to my great need, I re- ceived a telegram from my wife, stating that my brother who had been saved under my ministry, and powerfully sanctified about three weeks after his conversion, was at the point of death, and for me to come on the first train. I hastened home, Ft. Scott, Kansas, and reached his bedside just in time to close his eyes in death. Up to within two or three days of his departure, he would, crawl out of his bed, kneel down, and ask God to heal him. But God saw that it was best to take him, hence we bow in humble submission to His divine will. He was only eighteen years of age, and was just entering the ministry. In one short year he had committed to memory about forty chapters of the Bible, and had outlined about a half hundred sermons. As he drove a delivery wagon during the day, he did this work at night and on the Sabbath days. "We have no doubt he went to live with Jesus, and by the help of God we are de- termined to meet him in the bright, beautiful Eden above. Oh, God, help us to be true to the end. After we had laid him away in the "Evergreen" cemetery,, to await the resurrection morn, I opened a meeting, under the Holy Ghost, in the Methodist Protestant church building, on the corner of Sixth and Holbrook sts.. Ft. Scott, Kansas, and continued PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 85. to preach, and to seek for the great deliverance. On the night of September 2, 1893, at fifteen minutes past nine o'clock in the evening, I was kneeling in the pulpit, with four or five at the altar, crying to God to send the holy fire down upon us. While kneeling there I received one of those celestial tele- grams from the sky, which in substance was as fol- lows: "You have been pleading for nearly three weeks for the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Now get ready to receive it, for it is on the way." Turning to the pastor, 1 said, "It is coming in a double train load." Like a flash of lightning the holy fire struck me, and I was laid out prostrate on the floor, and unable to get up. Oh, such fire, such heavenly fire! And oh, what a time of suffering! I felt the fire run- ning to the ends of my toes and fingers. If my body had been in a furnace of literal fire I certainly could not have suffered more intensely than I did. I made repeated efforts to get upon my feet, but it was use- less. I thought I was burning to death, and told the astonished onlookers so. This lasted, as well as I re- member, for about one hoar, when suddenly the suffering ceased, and the blessed,* personal Holy Ghost filled every avenue of my purified soul. Wave after wave of divine glory rolled over and through my cleansed heart, and it seemed to me that it was written in fiames of living fire, "This is sanctifica- tion." I leaped to my feet, witnessing to this mighty 86. TRUMPET BLASTS. baptism of the Holy Ghost. The Comforter had come, aud my soul was satisfied. Hallelujah to the Lamb! Immediately after my sanctification we went to our first pastoral charge. There were three preach- ing points on the circuit, and during the first six months I held meetings at each of these places, and souls were both saved and sanctified. Bless God for giving the devil a black eye. The next spring, 1899, I entered the Methodist college at Winfield, Kans., and served this same charge during that year. The circuit being seventy miles away, it was neces- sary for me to leave home on Saturday morning, and could not get back until Monday night about eight o'clock. During this year I traveled about five thousand miles, and paid the railroad companies one hundred dollars. This, with tuition, books, rent, and feeding three of us made our expenses heavy. Quite a number of people on the circuit withdrew their support because I wouid not cease to preach the Bible doctrine of holiness and hell. We here extend thanks and appreciation to the few who did stand by the truth, and helped us. The opposers said, "We'll starve him out." And at times it looked as if they would be successful. Many times I have left wife and. the little babe (we had but one child then) with scarcely anything to eat, and have her meet me on my return Monday evening, and ask me if I had re- PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 87. ceivecl any money to buy food, etc., and not a few times I was compelled to answer: "No, dear, I only received enough to pay my tare home." Those were times of sifting and severe testing. One week the three of us and another man Jived on thirty-five cents. And mark you, wife was nursing the child at that time. But she stood nobly by me through it all, and did not murmur nor complain. When we were in such destitute circumstances, and some of the peo- ple on the circuit told me they would raise the salary, and pay me. if I would stop preaching holiness and hell; it is the custom of denominations to pay a sah ary. but I had nothing to do with that, as I told them I was neither preaching for them, nor for money, but to them, and for God. My wife said, i! Do not compromise the Gospel, but preach it clean and straight, and if we are compelled to go to the poor house, we'll go together." Those words were a great comfort to me. Blessed be God forever! During those times of severe testing the Lord gave me a dream, or vision of the second advent of Jesus, which I believe He would have related in as few vords as possible. The night he gave it to me I was in the village of A . In the dream or vision 1 saw the hearens covered with black clouds, and it seemed clear to all that a heavy storm was approach- ing the town. Another Bro. minister and myself, (I thought we were engaged in a tabernacle meeting 88. TRUMPET BLASTS. in the village) were going from the tent in a north- western direction and facing the approaching storm. The people of the town were greatly frightened and running in different directions for shelter. Neither of us were alarmed, albeit the appearance of the storm was enough to strike terror to the strongest heart, especially if one was in an unsaved condition. We moved steadily onward toward the storm which became more dense and dark. Suddenly the heaven opened in the far "^distance, and I saw our own blessed Jesus riding in a beautiful chariot and coming to- ward us in«the clouds of heaven, with the heavenly host, and with power and great glory. Instantly I was caught away from the earth and my friend, and I found myself flying toward the coming host with great rapidity. The distance between us seemed to be very great. On and on I swept toward the object of my love, and on and on He came toward me. At last we met, and throwing my arms around His neck I embraced Him, and poured out my gratitude at His feet. Just then I discovered that we were settling down into a very large enclosure with high massive walls on every side. As near as I could tell the mul- titude of people who were on the out side seemed to be making a desperate effort to climb over the walls and get on the inside. Only one, a young man, so far as I could tell, was successful. At this juncture the scene changed. A throne appeared, the judgment PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 89. was set and I saw our blessed Lord sitting on the judgment seat of justice. The first one to appear be- fore that indescribable tribunal of justice, was the young man whom I had seen climb over the wall. The act was real! Awful!! Indescribable!!! Jesus read the death sentence, which declared that his fu- ture home throughout on coming eternities, was to be u the lake of fire burning with brimstone". As soon as the sentence was read, the mother of this young man, who was standing near by, sprang for- ward and in substance said: "I object to that sen- tence. That is my boy", Jesus, the great Judge, looked her straight in the face and said : u Madam I give you to understand that I am the Master of this house." She said no more. Again the scene changed. This poor, unfortun- ate young man was turned over into the hands of God's officers and they led him away. I looked to the right and lo, I discovered a great precipice at the bottom of which was an indescribable lake of lire and brimstone. I saw them go toward this fiery prison. When they reached its edge, they threw the young man over and down, down, down he went screaming, crying, groaning, moaning, begging, and pleading, but all to no avail. The cries of that poor, doomed soul awoke me. I opened my eyes, took in my surroundings in a moment, of time, and found 1 was still on the earth. Bat the memory of that 90. TRUMPET BLASTS. vision, with its bright and dark side has never left me. God grant that, not only your unworthy ser- vant, but all who read these lines, may in the last day, be found, not on the left, but on the right hand of the impartial Judge, "Who will render to every man according to his deeds." My second appointment was the Maple City cir- cuit, twenty six miles southeast of Winfield Kansas. Here 1 spent about one year, when God led me defi- nitely to sever my connections with the Methodist denomination, He showed me that sectarianism is the curse of this and other countries; that it divides families, communities, states and nations; that the 666 warring sects are all man made; that He Himself has a Church, and has named it "The Church of God"; that He is its creator, builder, supporter, and law giver; that it is a divinely organized body; that we are born into it, and when sanctified are made holy members of it; that it is not a Legislative, but an Executive body; that it is one and only one; that it is composed of saved believers; and that it has order, ordinances, elders and deacons. And besides giving me light on this one divine Church, He has so arranged it in His divine providence that I should be identified with a body of: people who see eye to eye on this very precious truth. And although others have not the light and do not see it, yet we recognize every converted man and woman throughout the PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. 91. world, regardless of name, order, color, race etc., as our brothers and sisters in the Lord. We do not consider that we are "it", the "Church of God", to the exclusion of all others, but we do hold that we are in "it", i, e, in the "Church of God". Amen. A thousand blessings on the entire family of God. Hal- lelujah to the Lamb forever and ever. But I must bid you adieu. If yon have received any help in the perusal of these few feeble lines, p]ease give God ail the glory. Are you saved? Are you sanctified? Are you on your way to the bright, beautiful Eden above? Will you meet us in that beautiful land "Where the wicked cease from troub- ling and the weary are at rest"? THE END.
