RECIPE Red Iodide of Mercury 1 drachm Powdered Cantharldes 1 ounce Vaseline l " [Heat the cantharldes and vaseline together and stir while hot; allow It to cool, then mix In the red Iodide of mercury. | Cut the hair off of the affected part. Rub some of the blister in well. Allow It to stay on two days, then wash off and put on a little of the ointment recom- mended for sores once a day. ABSORBENT OINTMENT For 'Wind Galls, FZnlarjfed Glands, Capped Elbow, Knee and Hock. liECIPE: Iodide of Potassium l drachm Iodine 2 drachms Lanollne 2 ounces Rub a little on the affected part twice a day. 18 ANTISEPTIC OINTMENT Kor ]Kail IVouiids of the Koot. llECIPE : Carbolic Acid 2 drachms Linseed Oil to malce 4 ounces Open the wound to allow drainage. Pour in some of the ointment, and pack with oakum and bandage. Jveep the foot clean. DIURETIC Kor I^amiiiitis or Founder of the Keet. Recipe. Nitrate of Potassium 2 pounds Give two ounces in one pint of water as a drench three times a day. Stand the affected feet in water or pass a spray over them six hours a daj' for several days. Allow the horse to lie out on his side on a good bed at night. ANTISEPTIC DRESSING Kor Thrush or Diseased Krojf. Pare away the diseased and ragged portions of the frog. Wipe out clean and fill with calomel. Dress the foot with oakum and bandage. Keep the foot clean. CORNS, CRACKS and CONTRACTED HOOFS Are Caused toy ^ejflect in tlie Care of tlie Keet. For lameness from corns, cracks or con- tracted hoofs, soak the front feet in cold water three days, allowing the horse a good bed to lie on at night. After the feet have been well soaked, paint them bottom and top, everywhere, with black oil or crude petro- leum three times a week. Shoe the horse with plain, narrow webbed, light weight shoes, taking great pains to always keep the feet level. A small curved notch cut out of the hoof opposite a corn, so that it will not touch the shoe, will aid in relieving the lameness. The same should be done for a quarter or toe crack, and the two edges should be clamped together to prevent mo- tion, so that the hoof can grow solid from above downward. Contracted hoofs should be kept soft and pliable. Shoe with tips, or let the horse go barefooted for a few weeks. ]5 Prescriptions for Cattle. Recipe : Fluid Extract of Stavesacre. 1 ounce Soft Soap 4 ounces Water to make 1 quart Tills preparation Is good for horses as well as cattle. Rub in well with a sponge all over the body. The treatment of this disease is so unsatisfactory that precautions are necessary to prevent it. Give laxative recommended for constipation one day before calving or as soon as possible afterwards, to all heavy milking cows that are in good condition and giving birth to their second, third, fourth or fifth calves. 18 Prescriptions for Dogs. Give 20 grains of Chloral Hydrate in two tablespoons- ful of water in the mouth or in.jected Into the rectum. Repeat in half an hour if necessary. Antidote for Arsenic and Rouj;]! on Rats. Give a tablespoonful of Ilydrated Oxide of Iron every ten minutes.
