AT O » . *K, The Coddington Family RECORDS OF ONE LINE OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN CODDINGTON OF WOODBRIDGE, N.J. WITH NOTES ON ALLIED FAMILIES i - By Rev. Herbert Gi Coddington, D. D. SYRACUSE, N. Y. 1907 Jzj LIMITED EDITION Two hundred copies of this pamphlet have been printed of which tin- is N 1 1 1 1 1 > 1 1 ■ r / I Copyrighted 1907, by Herbert G. Coddington. 1 The Coddington Family. THE NAME. The name Coddington probably comes from Cotentin, a promontory of Normandy. It is found in various forms (Coding- ton, Codinton, Codyngton, Coddington, De Codyngton, etc.), in the English records as far back as 1200. "The component parts of this name (Codrington) are all Saxon, viz., Cod, a wallet or husk of any grain; ring, a ring- and ton, a town; but from these with the help even of the most fanciful imagination we can collect nothing satisfactory respect- ing its etymology." — Playfair's British Family Antiquity, vol. 6, p. 801. ORIGIN OF THE FAMILY. "From Philip, younger son of David de Malpas, descends the famous knightly family of the Egertons, who took the name from the place of their residence, as others of this family from Cot- grave, Overton, Codington, Golborn, places where they lived." — (Britannia, by Wm. Camden, enlarged by Richard Gough, vol. Ill , p. 41.) One Line of the Descendants of John Coddington Of Woodbridge, N. J. The town of Woodbridge, 1 N. J., was settled 1666-7, chiefly by persons coming from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The name "Woodbridge" was given to it in honor of the Rev. John Woodbridge, who was the pastor of some of the settlers when they lived at Newbury, Mass. Gov. Win. Coddington 2 of Rhode Island was one of the original purchasers of Monmouth County, which at first included Woodbridge, but he did not come to New Jersey and it is not known that any of his children or grandchild- ren settled there, though there was probably some connection between his purchase and the fact that Coddingtons are found in the place at an early date. John Coddington was the first of the name of whom any mention is made in the records of the early settlers. He purchased land in Woodbridge in 1683 and in 1684 and 1691 of Jonathan Dennis and Wm. Bingley and became the ancestor of a large number of descendants. He was probably the son of John Coddington 3 of Boston, Mass., who died there 18 1 — See History of Woodbridge, N. J., by Joseph W. Dally. 2 — See pamphlet "Bi-Centennial Celebration of the N. J. Legislature 1883," Appendix by Hon. Edwin Salter. See also list of works containing references to Gov. Wm. Coddington. 3 — See "Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England," and also Boston Records. Second Report of the Record Commissioners. He removed to Brain- tree. In 1650, house and orchard sold by John Cuddington to Wm. Hollo way. (He had Leger North, Smit South, Bottolph East — W. H. W.) F. 102 — Cole, house & garden; later owned by John Cuddington, John Bateman and John Odlin, in 1650." Page 35 — mention of a lot "lately bought of John Cuddington" (1650). See, also, Memorial History of Boston by Justin Winsor, vol. 2, p. XXXII, for allusion to John Cuddington. Aug. (or June), 1655, leaving a wife, Emma , who was mar- ried 7 Mar., 1656, by Major Humph. Atherton to her second hus- band, John Jephson (or Jepson), and by him had a son John Jeph- son, who married Ruth Gardner. In the Boston records, the name is sometimes spelled Cuddington. John Coddington of Boston and Emma his wife had certainly two and perhaps three children, viz., 1 Sarah, b. 4 Oct. (or Mar. 29), 1651; d. 9 Aug. (or S Sept.). 1656; 2 John, b. 9 Feb., 1654 (or 53). John married Hannah Gardner, daughter* of Richard Gardner, of Charlestown> Mass., (whose daughter Ruth Gardner, married John Jeph- son). He probably went to New Jersey and founded the family there. Nothing more is known of him. John Coddington 2 , of Woodbridge, N. J., probably son of John, of Boston; b. (prob.) 1654; m. (1st), Annah (or Hannah) (perhaps Gardner) 3 , who d. 20 Sept., 1690; m. Bought land in Woodbridge of Jonathan Dennes in 1683-4-91. His will cannot be found in the Records. His children were probably as follows, though he, perhaps, had others whose names are not known: 1.
