December 21, 1910.— Committed to the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union and ordered to be printed. Mr. IvODENBERG, from the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expo- sitions, submitted the following EEPORT. [To accompany H. R. 29503.] The Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 29503) to promote the erection of a memorial in conjunction with a Perry's Victory Centennial celebration on Put- in-Bay Island during the yeaT 1913 in commemoration of the one hun- dredth anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie and the Northwestern cami)aign of Gen. William Henry Harrison in the War of 1S12, hav- ing considered same, begs to submit the following report and recom- mends that same do pass when amended as follows: On page 2 of the bill strike out the fifth and sixth i)reambles. On page 3, line 6, after the word "of," strike out the word ''such" and add the word "a." On ])age 3, line 6. after the word "memorial," add the words "in commemoration of the victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry on Lake Erie." On page 3, line 10, after the word "Commission," strike out the remainder of section 1, so as to make the amended paragraph read as follows: Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury of the United States not other \vise'appro])riated, the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars toward the erection of a memorial in commemoration of the victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry on Lake Erie, and in aid of the Perry's Victory Centennial celebration, to be held during the year nineteen hundred and thirteen, on Put-in-Bay Island, Lake Erie, Ohio, the same to be disbursed by the Perry's Victory Centennial Commission. 2 MEMOlikL TO COMMODORE PERRY, ETC. A commis.sion has been created by act of the Ohio Legislature, known as Perry's Victory Centennial Commission, of wliich President Taft and Oov. Harmon ar(> honorarv vice ]>resi- (leiits. The governors of the States of Penn.'^ylvania, Illinois, Miciii- gan, Wisconsin, New York, Rhode Island, and Kentucky, under the unanimous authority of their respective legislut ures, hiive each appointed similar commissions, juid the Stales of Indiana and Miiuie- .sotii are expected to do likewise. The gentlemen appearing before the committee, among whom were Commodore Worthington, Webster II. Huntington, Col. Henry Wat- terson, Gen. Philip C. Hayes, Gov. Judson Ilarmon, and .Senator John P. Sanborn, gave it as their confident behcf that the 10 partici- pating States would contribute not less than $.350,000 toward the success of this undertaking. In view of the far-reaching importance to the American Kej)ubhc of Perry's brilliant naval victory and as a tribute to the memory of one of our greatest naval officers, your committee is unanimously of the opinion that the Federal Government should cooperate with the States in the erection of this memorial and celebration, and we believe that the Congress should appropriate the sum of $250,000 for such purposes. / LIBRARY OF CONGRESS 011 895 384 8 %
