I am very grateful for the aid given me by Miss Rebecca Dare, of Zanesville, Ohio, and Mr. Robert Moore, of Cincinnati, Ohio. I regret that this record is so incomplete in the first generation, but so far as I know no genealogy of the Dare family has ever been published, and I hope my efforts will encourage some other member of the family to take up this work with better success. Clara Dare Ettinger. Chicago, III., February 20, 1901. The difterent branches of the numerous Dares in New Jersey were classified as follows ; The Stoio Creek, The Maurice River ^ The Woodbury, The Cape May, The Millville, and The Deerfleld. This genealogy pertains especially to the Deerfield branch. Married Children of William Children of Robert Children of Robert, Jr. William William, Jr. Daniel John Dare Robert Robert, Jr. Gamaliel and Benoni Elizabeth Benjamin David Robert, Jr. No. 2 Hannah Constant Constant Sarah Jeremiah Anna William Dare William Dare came to this comitry in or prior to 1682. He left estates in Dorset and Somersetshire, England. His wife's name was Constant. They had six children. He is described as of Cohansey, in the county of Salem. He probably came into this region with the Faiifield people. He located a tract of one hundred acres of cedar swamp on Lebanon as early as March, 1695-6. About 1700 he became the owner of two fifty-acre tracts, as set off by Bridges, composing a part of the farm northeast of Elmer's mill-pond, recently occupied by David Dare, one of his lineal descendants, who died April, 1863. William Dare was sheriff of Salem Comity in 1703, and he was among those of the first who settled in the eastern part of Bridgeton, N. J. [From Elmer's History of Cumberland County ] William Dare, Jr. William Dare, Jr., was a son of William and Constant Dare. I have not been able to find the date of his birth or death, but Elmer's History of Cumberland County says: "About 1753 William Dare, Jr., and Colonel Ephraim Seeley purchased of the agent of the West Jersey Society several hundred acres lying south of Bridges' tract and east of the tract sold to Mr. Moore." Robert Dare Robert Dare, the second son of William and Constant, was born in 1702 and died August 22, 1772. He was a member of the Deerfield Presbyterian Church and is buried in the graveyard of that church. I have not been able to learn the name of his wife. His children were Daniel Dare, Robert Dare, Jr., Benjamin Dare and David Dare. There may have been other children. Benoni Dare, Elizabeth Dare, Constant Dare and Sarah Dare were children of Wil- liam and Constant Dare, but I have not been able to get any information in regard to them.
