BROWN, M. D. THE LEXINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1905 la Ezcliaagd. r4i»r'07 SPATULA PRESS BOSTON PREFACE. The epitaphs contained in this volume were copied from stones in the Old Burying-ground in the rear of the Unitarian Church in Lexington and in the Robbins Cemetery in the East Village, and embrace all those on stones now visible above the ground. Seven hundred and sixteen epitaphs are here given. With all the quaintness of diction, the pecul- iarities of spelling, of punctuation and type, they are accurate transcripts from the stones, and may be considered as correct biographical records as those of the family Bibles of the inhabitants of this community. As the earliest settlements in the town are believed to have been made about the year 1638, it is fair to conclude that many burials were made on the farms and elsewhere about the town before the establishment of the Old Burying-ground. No record of such burials, however, is in existence. The northwest and earliest part of the Old Burying-ground was estab- lished in 1692, by a gift from John Munroe, a son of the immigrant and himself the father of ten children by his wife Hannah. Three stones, marked i6go, are the oldest found. In 1747 the ground was enlarged by the purchase of land from William Munroe (1701-1783), "the blacksmith." The record goes that he took cold while haying in his meadow and was the first laid in this part of the grounds. In iSii a plot of land was bought to the eastward of the present entrance to the cemetery, and on this four tombs were built in that year. Still later an additional lot of land was bought to the north of the four tombs, extending to the north- east corner of the present ground. It is called the Proprietors' Lot. In 1 819 still other land was set aside by the Robbins and Simonds families at the left of the entrance. The private burying-ground of the Robbins family in the East Village was established by Mr. Stephen Robbins (175 8- 1 847), and contains the bodies of at least a hundred members of his family and others. PREFACE. It should also be remembered that eight minutemen of the town are buried near the Battle Monument on the Common. The burials here referred to, with those in the new cemetery, include all those known within the limits of the town. In the fall of 1903 a paper was read by the compiler of this book before the Lexington Historical Society describing these grounds quite fully. It has recently been printed and is to be found in the third volume of the Proceedings of the Society. Annexed to this book are lithographic plans after drawings from sur- veys made by Mr. Eh M. Robbins, who allows their use. The small figures given with each epitaph refer to these plans and serve to identify all the stones now visible. Valuable assistance in copying the epitaphs has been given by Miss Sarah Eddy Holmes of Lexington. In connection with the epitaphs, footnotes have been added, giving the Une of ancestry and some biographical notes for the purpose of identifi- cation. LEXINGTON EPITAPHS. [Proprletori 6] MR.
