Almost half a century has elapsed since the institution of the Philanthropic So- ciety of Hampden Sydney College. Many of its earlier members are no more on earth — others are advanced in life — while many, scattered over various regions of our own country and of the world, have their residence far remote from each other and from their common Alma Mater. So much of the improvement, and so many of the most interesting associations of collegiate hfe, are connected with the literary societies, that we are encouraged to believe this, our first catalogue, will be a welcome visitor to our distant members, and recall many a pleasing re- miniscence of early and happier days ; and as the prosperity of a college is closely connected with the condition of its literary societies, every friend of Hampden Sydney will rejoice to witness in the growing numbers and increasing energy of our society, at once the best evidence of present prosperity, and the surest presage of future progress for this venerable institution. With the recent unexampled increase in the numbers, and the rapid and deci- sive elevation in the standard of scholarship in the college, our society has made a correspondent progress. Our large and elegant hall is becoming already crowded, and will be too small for our increasing numbers. Our select and invaluable library is enlarging from numerous additions by gift and purchase, and the society contemplate the erection, at no distant period, of an edifice in all respects adapted to the growing numbers and influence of its members, and the prospective great- ness of the college.
