TOMPKINS THE 56th ENGINEERS IN THE WORLD WAR Company data furnished by Company Commanders Platoon Rosters by Platoon Commanders Compiled and Edited by Alexander Macomber AND Meade Brunet November first Nineteen hundred twenty **&»■ Copyright, 1920 By Meade Brunet Monotyped and Printed by The Brandow Printing Company Albany, New York ©CIA605074 OEC 2\ 1320 FOREWORD HIS brief history is compiled for those who carried on during the great war, making this Regiment possible, and its work worthy of commendation. It has been a task to accumulate this data, edit it, and make it as brief as is consistent with interesting facts. Should you recall the trans- fers, how company commanders were at times in command of two companies in as many days, platoons transferred and re-transferred; you will then realize that it is well nigh impossible to follow accurately this maze and tangle of changes. The manner of organization in the United States where the various companies were recruited and sent abroad unit by unit, involving frequent changes in the personnel made it impracticable to present an accurate history during this period. Many passed through the regimental reservoir during those days who contributed their share towards this history but the record now set forth, however, only attempts to outline the work of those who finally saw service overseas. Rosters are given as of about the fifteenth of October for some platoons and November the first for others. After you have perused these few pages, thought over these times long since passed — those days gone — it is hoped that the unpleasant incidents, the hardships borne, the errors made, — even here in this brief record of events — will be forgot, and the memories of duty well performed and those close friendships made, will remain; this to be our recompense for the services cheerfully performed and the sacri- fices made. INTRODUCTION GggjEl HE great machine of modern war requires for its function many parts, some of which are little known to the lay- man. Engineer troops performed many of these func- tions and among its combat branches was the searchlight service, known to the American Expeditionary Forces as the 56th Engineers (Searchlight), which served as army troops with the French, the British and our own armies. Previous to the great war searchlights had been developed in the United States Army for coast defense and for battle illumination. Their principal use had been in fixed installations in harbor defense, although experiments had been made in the development of mobile units for battlefield illumination. During the European war reports showed a considerable use of lights for various purposes, and on the entry of the United States into the conflict the organization of the divisional engineer trains in May 1917 provided for a field searchlight section. The 1st Division Engineer Train commanded by Captain John C. Gotwals, C. of E., during its organization at Washington Barracks, D. C, received as part of its equipment several field searchlights with which considerable experimental work was performed prior to depart- ure for France in August 1917. On arrival abroad, Captain Gotwals and 1st Lt. R. W. Lewis, with fifty soldiers of the searchlight section of the 1st Division Train, were detached on searchlight service, and these troops after experience on the French and British fronts formed the instructing personnel for the 56th Engineers to which they were later assigned as the units were organized in the United States and sent abroad. During the organization of the Divisional Train at Washington Barracks, Captain Alexander Macomber, Engineer Reserve Corps, was relieved from the First Officers Training Camp and ordered there for investigation work in development of searchlights. After some months of investigation it was apparent that personnel must be assem- bled and trained for searchlight service. So the Provisional Search- light Detachment was formed and trained at this post. This detachment, commanded by Captain Macomber with Lieu- tenants Walter L. Simpson, George F. Young, Paul F. Belcher, Meade Brunet and twenty-five enlisted men, formed the nucleus of the 56th Engineers. About thirty other officers were soon assigned for instruc- tion and on January 1, 1918, following orders from the War Department, the 56th Engineers (Searchlight) was authorized and the detachment transferred to Company " B." The personnel was increased by trans- fers from other units, drafts from National army camps and voluntary enlistment, and other companies were formed as quickly as possible. At this time the requirements abroad for the ultimate organization of searchlight troops were unknown, except that ten companies would be immediately needed. Consequently it was determined to send these troops to France, two companies at a time, as soon as available. This policy was followed with Companies "A," "B," "C," and "D," after which it was decided that the searchlight troops should form part of so-called Corps Engineer Regiments. Consequently the re- maining six companies went abroad as companies of the 603rd to 605th Engineer Regiments inclusive. The A. E. F. however had other plans of organization, and on the arrival of the units in France all were immediately returned to their old name and the 56th Engineers (Searchlight) was again formally organized as a separate regiment of ten companies and headquarters. Although the kaleidoscopic changes in organizations and names of units from detachments and provisional companies to corps regi- ments and back again were not the least of the troubles of those charged with our wonderful army paper work, nevertheless the 56th Engineers developed at Washington Barracks, the birthplace of all the companies, a strong spirit of co-operation and esprit de corps which characterized the outfit throughout its service. Few organizations had such diverse duties from experimental work and development of their own equipment to front line service with the British, French and American armies in anti-aircraft defense against the night bomber. The tactical use of searchlight troops abroad developed the platoon as the operating unit, which in active service became an isolated unit on detachment duty, so that companies rarely met and many saw none of their comrades in other units of the regiment for many months and perhaps not at all. The history, there- fore, of the regiment becomes that of each individual unit and it is a record of these activities which is here set forth. Regimental Staff on Parade at Nantes Co. C— 56th Regimental Headquarters at Le Douet The 56th Engineers " B " Company joined their left flank, the closest light being three kilometers from the front line. After the opening of the St. Mihiel Drive, September 12th, there was considerable air activity and the Company met with much success in illuminating bombing planes and occupied new positions as the drive advanced. After the push the Company moved from this sector, the places vacated being taken over by "E" Company, and took up positions in the Meuse-Argonne Sector extending along a line from Resicourt to Fort Genicourt. With each advance of the drive new positions were dug in further to the north and east, " B " Company on the right flank and "C" Company on the left. The positions covered by the three Companies extended over the entire front of the 1st Army and a part of the 2nd Army also. The operations in this sector were very successful, only one enemy bombing plane succeeding in getting through the lines. On October 19th 2nd Lieutenants Carl S. Breese and Wil- liam H. Cook were assigned to "A" Company. 2nd Lieut. Breese took over the command of the 19th Platoon on October 21st, Lieut. Megargee being assigned to Headquarters as Adjutant. On October 29th Lieut. Harold R. Davis, at his position 20-A near Esnes, shot down with machine-gun and rifle fire a Fokker type D-7, one of the famous Richtenshofen Circus, official confirmation of which was received from Chief Anti-Aircraft Service 1st Army. After the armistice was signed, the Company was concentrated at Fort de la Chaume where all searchlight equipment of "A," "B" and "C" Companies was dumped. On the 20th of November these three companies moved toward Conflans constructing and operating telephone lines for railway operation. Later "A" Company took over the operation of the lines from Verdun to Conflans, Conflans to Briey, Audun, Longuyon and Arlon. December 5th "A" Company assembled at Conflans- Jarny and on the 6th proceeded to Dampierre, near Langres, arriving there in three days. December 30th 2nd Lieut. David B. Page, Jr., who was at that time in the hospital, was assigned to the Company. 2nd Lieut. W. A. Cook was transferred to Company "G". On January 5th, 1919, Lieut. Page died at Camp Hospital No. 24 of pneumonia and 2nd Lieut. Cook died from results of a railway accident at Tours, where on January 3rd he fell under a car while enroute to the Port of Embarkation. 2nd Lieut. C. F. Kurtz was assigned to "A" Company on January 11th. Orders were received to proceed to point of em- barkation so the organization entrained on February 1st and arrived at Nantes February 4th and passed the Base Port Inspection February 16th, 1919. In the World War COMPANY "B"— 56TH ENGINEERS ; jg ssgrojjiSHf 5 J COMPANY was formed at Washington Barracks, fj l^C ^J D ' C " January 3rd ' 1918 ' by R ' S - °' No - lj with I^ftlH Captain Alexander Macomber commanding. The If ■!., enlisted personnel consisted of men of the Search- *--^" light Detachment, all of whom were transferred to Company " B " on the same date. Captain Albert S. Hall was assigned to the Company, relieving Captain Alexander Macomber as Company Commander on January 12th. Approximately four months were spent in training at Washington Barracks and dur- ing this time a part of the personnel was transferred to "A" and "C" Companies upon their organization. May 10th, 1918, the Company embarked for France with Company "D" and Detachment Company "C," arriving at Brest May 23rd. Orders were to proceed to Fort du Mont Valerien, where they arrived May 30th. At this station the Company was divided into five Platoons, the 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th, and the work of equipping them for field duty was begun. About ten days later Captain Pengilly relieved Captain Hall as Com- pany Commander. The 10th and 11th Platoons with the 7th Platoon of Company "C," left the Fort on June 16th, commanded by Lieut. Weightman Edwards, for duty with the First French Army near Amiens. Later the 7th and 11th Platoons left the 1st French Army at Amiens, arriving at Creil for duty with the 3rd French Army on the same date with the 12th, 14th, 15th, and Company Headquarters. These Platoons were detailed for duty with the French Anti-Aircraft Artillery. The following two months were spent in intensive training, the enemy bombing activity being moderate. On August 15th, the 10th Platoon was transferred to Company "C," and the 7th Platoon of Company "C" was transferred to Company "B," so that it now con- sisted of the 7th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th Platoons, commanded by Lieutenants Weightman Edwards, W. J. Crocker, A. J. Parsons, H. A. Manthi and H. E. Walker respectively. After the formation of the 1st American Army, the Company pro- ceeded by trucks on September 3rd to Colombey-les-Belles, arriving there September 7th for Anti- Aircraft duty with the first Army. Head- quarters were established on September 8th at Royaumeix and search- lights were placed in positions about six kilometers back of the lines in a double row paralleling the front. The lights were moved forward after the St. Mihiel attack, occupying positions extending from Hondi- court to Lironville, and Company Headquarters moved to Hamonville. There was a large amount of bombing activity during favorable weather and much success was attained in the illumination of enemy planes. 10 T he 5 6 th E ngineers On September 24th new positions were occupied along the Meuse, headquarters being established at Tilly-sur-Meuse, but four days later moved to Fort de Genicourt. The positions occupied extended along the Meuse for a distance of about twelve miles, about half of which was in the First Army Area and the remainder in the Second. There was a moderate amount of air activity and all enemy planes that ap- proached were obliged to turn back or circle around the southern flank of the lights. It was largely due to care in construction and proper use of cover that the casualties were very few, there being a consider- able amount of shell fire by enemy artillery and bombing and machine gun fire from hostile air craft. On November 19th a move was made to Conflans, engaging in the construction of telephone lines for the railway system centering at Conflans and extending to Arlon, Didenhofen, Metz and Etain. They were relieved from that duty on December 6th and proceeded to Dam- pierre, arriving there December 8th, for preparation for return to the United States. m c ° ™ ■£ > In the World War n COMPANY "C"— 56TH ENGINEERS <^>J TOGETHER with Company "A," after an unevent- ful sea voyage on the U. S. A. T. Tenadores, arrived at Bassen Docks Bordeaux March 21st, 1918, and debarked on the morning of the 22nd. They were '^ the first troops to arrive at this port and were given a hearty welcome. The Tenadores carried about 600 troops be- sides the 56th Engineers and Captain Pengilly was made the Com- manding Officer of all troops aboard ship. After debarkation came the " Rest Camp " with its " Griefs " at Camp No. 1, Base Section No. 2. A few days of this and the companies entrained for Paris, arriving at Suresnes, Seine, and marched up the hill to Fort du Mont Valerien; the first troops of the 56th Engineers in France. Shortly after arrival Company "C" was organized into the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Platoons of fifty men each. The shortages of men were made up by transfer from Company "A." The Platoon Com- manders were assigned as follows: 4th Platoon, 1st Lieut. E. F. Wil- liams; 5th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Jordon Gauthier; 6th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. J. W. Clark and 7th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Weightman Edwards. 2nd Lieut. E. H. Watkins was placed in charge of Motor Trans- portation at the Fort. 1st Lieut. L. Albert was transferred to Com- pany " A " and given command of the 1st Platoon. About the middle of April Captain Pengilly and 1st Lieut. Edwards left for the British front to be attached to the English Searchlight Units. On May 15th, 1918 the 1st and 4th Platoons, commanded by Lieut. Albert and Lieut. Gauthier, left with orders to report to the Anti-Aircraft Commander, 1st French Army at Conty, 20 kilometers south of Amiens. The detachment was commanded by Major W. F. Tompkins, who had recently been assigned to the Searchlight Depot. 2nd Lieut. E. M. Wright, who had just returned from training with the 1st and 2nd British Armies, was attached as assistant to Major Tompkins. Lieut. A. Renaud, was attached as Liaison Officer and 1st Lieut. Byrd as Medical Officer. Six searchlights and two para- boloids were dug into positions east and south of Amiens on May 17th, forming an extension of the British line which was east, north and west of Amiens. Headquarters were established at a French Anti- Aircraft Battery on the San Tuscien road near hill 102. This same day the searchlights were exposed at 10:00 P. M. for the first time in action; enemy bombers came from the east and in every case turned south and went completely around the lights, thus keeping out of range after the lights had been exposed. The heavy artillery bothered the listen- ers a great deal as the batteries were very active in this sector. Some of the lights were exposed every night for over a week, but the topog- 12 T he 56th Engineers graphy of the country was such that the enemy bomber could follow the Somme River almost to the lights and then cut south on the Avre Valley when points other than Amiens were to be raided. The first plane in the beam was obtained on the night of May 27th. The enemy raided Amiens with about fifteen planes and three planes were observed in the beam at one time, one being held for about five minutes. Both British and French Anti-Aircraft guns were able to fire on the planes but none were brought down in this area. This same night Lieut. Albert was severely wounded at his position by an enemy shell. He had both legs amputated the next morning and his life was saved only by a transfusion of blood from Lieut. Byrd who afterwards worked untiringly for him at the Dury Hospital. Lieut. Wright was placed in command of the 1st Platoon. The first of June the 5th and 6th Platoons in Command of Lieut. Williams and Lieut. Clark arrived to operate with the 1st and 4th. Captain Bryan relieved Major Tompkins as Detachment Commander on June 7th and two days later the lights were moved to Beauvais. This was done in order to operate with a pursuit group of Sopwith Camel planes. Five British planes were equipped with signal lights and were to be the air defense, replacing the Anti-Aircraft guns. Flights were made at night by the British aviators, using one of the searchlights located near the Toquerolks aerodrome as a pilot light. Owing to lack of action and need of the lights at Amiens Defense, the Platoons were moved back to the previous sector on June 24th and a few days later the 7th, 10th and 11th Platoons arrived. A general order was issued August 1st making the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 10th Platoons, Company " C " of the 56th Engineers, commanded by Captain Bryan. The Platoons made a general shift forward on August 7th, leaving Amiens almost in the rear of all lights, the forward lights being within three kilometers of the front line. This move was made in order to catch the enemy night bombers who would probably raid after the allied offensive of the next day. The result of the offensive was so successful that the enemy bombing planes were out of range. How- ever the lights were exposed several times in order to stop machine gunning. About September 1st, 1918, Captain G. F. Young relieved Captain A. W. Bryan as Company Commander. Shortly after this Company "C" moved east to follow the Allied advance, still connecting with the British lights as before. The line of lights now extended from Lihous south to a point about five miles beyond Roye. In the midst of this activity Company "C" received its first casualty of killed in action. Sergeant Robert H. Jordan was instantly killed on the night of Sep- tember 3rd by an enemy bomb while he was directing the operation of his light. The light which he commanded was searching for an In the World War 13 enemy plane when another approached the light from the opposite direction. Sergeant Jordan was awarded posthumously the Croix de Guerre with Palm. Due to the allied advance on the Hindenburg line on September 27th, a line of lights was established from a point about ten kilometers southwest of St. Quentin to Ham. On October 9th, the 10th Platoon, commanded by 1st Lieut. T. T. Talley, was relieved by the 38th Platoon, commanded by 1st Lieut. J. H. Phillip. The 38th had formerly been a part of Company " H." The next move was on October 12th to the American Front in the Argonne Sector, the first lap of the journey to Ft. Mont Valerien being made in one day. 1st Lieut. McRae was relieved of command of the 6th Platoon by 2nd Lieut. Fred. Butler, formerly of Company "H." Between the arrival on October 18th and the push of November 1st several of the positions were quite heavily shelled. However a week of continuous bombardment by the enemy's long range guns fortunately caused no casualties. Eight days after the Armistice all equipment was turned in near Verdun and the Company moved to Chateau Monsel, near Conflans Jarny, working on the construction and maintenance of telephone lines from Conflans to Metz. At this place Captain A. W. Bryan assumed command of the Company, relieving Captain G. F. Young, and on December 6th the Company started overland to Dampierre (Haute Marne), arriving there on December 8th, and after eight days were ordered to Champigny-les-Langres to take over the Searchlight Schools. Captain J. O. Jensen was placed in command on December 10th, relieving Captain A. W. Bryan. After cleaning up all the search- light emplacements and salvaging all the excess material at the School, the Company entrained for Nantes on the afternoon of February 1st, 1919. "C" Company as a unit, and Captain A. W. Bryan individually, who was in command at the time of its citation, were awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French in recognition of their dis- tinguished services while attached to the First French Army. 14 T he 56th Engineers COMPANY "D"— 56TH ENGINEERS 5 5 COMPANY was organized as the Third Provisional Company about January 15th, and as a Company on February 1st, 1918. After three months' pre- paration the Company, under command of Captain Arthur W. Bryan, left Washington Barracks for over- seas service on May 8th, 1918. The trip from the United States to France was uneventful. The "Dwinsk" entered the harbor of Brest on the morning of May 23rd, but owing to the congestion of ships the men could not debark until the afternoon of May 25th, After four days at Pontenazen Barracks the outfit entrained for Fort du Mont Valerien, Suresnes, arriving there early in the evening of May 30th. A few days later it was divided into five Platoons as follows: 16th Platoon, 1st Lieut. Roderick McRae; 17th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Albert E. Fawley; 18th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Clay C. Boswell; 19th Platoon, 1st Lieut. Henry P. Mergagee; and 20th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Harold E. Davis. The 16th and 17th Platoons were sent to Fort du Stains for paraboloid and sound instruction. Captain A. W. Bryan was relieved of the command on June 7th, 1918, to assume command of the detachment then on the Somme Front near Amiens. Captain Albert S. Hall of Company " B " 56th Engineers was transferred to command on the same date. The 17th Platoon re- turned from Fort du Stains on June 13th and was sent to the British front in two sections under the command of Lieut. A. E. Fawley and Lieut. John O. Jensen. The 18th, 19th and 20th Platoons left Fort Mont Valerien for Is-sur-Tille on June 14th, with two sixty-inch Sperry Searchlights and four thirty-six inch Sperry Searchlights. The 16th Platoon returned to Fort du Mont Valerien from Fort du Stains on June 16th, 1918 and was then divided into two sections. One under the command of Lieut. E. H. Watkins, proceeded to Gievres (Dept. Loir-et-Cher) to establish a Searchlight Depot. The other under Lieut. Roderick McRae remained at Fort du Mont Valerien for Motor Transportation work until August 1st, 1918, when it was transferred to the 9th Platoon, Company " C." August 28th the 17th Platoon, which at this time was at the British Front together with the 19th and 20th Platoons, were ordered to Colombey-les- Belles and were transferred to Company "A." All the vacated positions were guarded by detachments from the 18th Platoon until September 16th, when the 28th, 29th and 31st Platoons of Com- pany ' 'E' ' were transferred to Company "D" and reported to Is-sur-Tille. On December 4th, 1918, the Company entrained for Langres, arri- ing on the fifth, and were billeted in the village of Charmoilles until December 14th and then proceeded to the Searchlight School at Cham- pigny to prepare for return to the United States. In the World War 15 COMPANY "E"— 56TH ENGINEERS )) WAS first organized in the early part of 1918 as the Fourth Provisional Company 56th Engineers. The first Regimental letter given to the Provisional Company was " F," which was retained until just prior to going overseas. The officers at this time were Captain Potter, Lieutenants Grower, Hertz, Page, Trap- hagen, McClelland and Ainsworth. During the early period of train- ing and development the personnel of the Company was changed to some extent in order to bring other companies of the 56th up to strength before going overseas. About the last part of May 1918, the opportunity was given to camp at the Annapolis Rifle Range and remain there until the last part of June 1918. This valuable experi- ence was appreciated, as all of the companies were not so fortunate. Prior to sailing for overseas orders were received transferring "F" Company 56th Engineers, to "E" Company 603rd Engineers. On July 10th, 1918 the 2nd Battalion of the 603rd Engineers, consisting of "D," "E" and "F" Companies, sailed from Hoboken, N. J. under the command of Major Alexander Macomber on the British transport Toloa. The trip across was uneventful and on July 21, 1918 the Bat- talion was landed at Brest, France. After three days at the "Rest Camp" orders were received to entrain for Langres, Haute Marne, and on July 28th the Battalion reached Langres. General Order No. 135 was issued, whereby "E" Company 603rd Engineers, became "E" Company 56th Engineers. Upon arrival at Langres "E" Com- pany was assigned to duty with the Anti- Aircraft School and was sta- tioned at Champigny for training. During the month of August the Company remained at Champigny and later was assigned to duty with the Second American Army. Many changes in officer and en- listed personnel took place at this time and Captain Bryan took com- mand of the Company. After a short period at Colombey-les-Belles the Company took up positions near Pont-a-Mousson and remained in that locality until the Armistice. The action on enemy planes was most successful, as no enemy planes succeeded in penetrating the area covered by the lights. Soon after the Armistice a concentration camp and transport park was established about one and a half kilometers south of Dieulouard. Company "H" moved into this same camp on November 18th. Later both companies moved to Colombey-les-Belles, where they awaited until January 3rd, 1919 for orders to proceed to the base port for return to the United States. 16 T he 5 6th Engineers COMPANY "F"— 56TH ENGINEERS H } 5 COMPANY was formed from a provisional search- light company at Washington Barracks and brought up to full strength from transfers of enlisted personnel from Company "G" on May 19th, 1918. This Com- pany was transferred to " D " 603rd Engineers, in June 1918, forming a part of the Second Battalion. Shortly after this the Company departed for overseas service, arriving at Brest on July 21st, 1918. It then proceeded to Champigny, where instruction was given in searchlight operation, and on August 15th departed from Champigny for service with the British Army, at Abbeville. The Platoons were then attached to five British Armies, as follows: The 26th Platoon to the First British Army, 22nd Platoon to the Second British Army, 25th Platoon to the Third British Army, 23rd Platoon to the Fourth British Army, 24th Platoon to the Fifth British Army. Each Platoon was then broken up into small detachments and dis- tributed among the British lights attached to the respective armies. The offensive of the British Army was at this time just getting under way, so as the line moved forward the lights were moved up to within five to six thousand yards of the front line, forming a chain of lights across the entire front. Whereby with the use of night fighting planes for combatant work many enemy planes were brought down. Corporal Manning of the 23rd Platoon was killed by a bomb on Sep- tember 11th, 1918, at Murlu. 1st Class Private William Beckman was also wounded at the same time, although not seriously. The British Army proved conclusively that the real way of com- bating night bombing was by the use of night fighting planes together with searchlights. The number of planes brought down proved this. On September 15th the largest bombing plane known to be in existence at this time was brought down over Viller-au-Flos. This plane has often been referred to in British reports: The Company continued in this service until October 15th, taking part in all of the offensive operations of the British Army in that period, and rendering con- spicuous service with the units to which they were assigned. Inspec- tor of Searchlights, G. H. Q., B. E. F., in reference to their work wrote as follows: " It is hoped that you will be able to express your thanks to the officers and men for the great assistance they have been able to render to the British searchlight units through the arduous time during which they have been attached to the B. E. F., our admiration of the manner in which they have accustomed themselves to our methods, and for the aptitude they have shown in learning the prac- tical side of their special work." At the time of the Armistice the Company was at Champigny. In the World War 17 COMPANY "G"— 56TH ENGINEERS 55 WAS first organized on January 23rd, 1918, as the 5th Provisional Company 56th Engineers, with the following officers: Captain James C. Herron, 1st Lieut. John H. Gross and 2nd Leiut. Edwin H. Watkins. On May 1st Captain Herron was relieved from duty as C. O. and transferred to Camp Humphreys, Va., and 1st Lieut. F. D. Myers assumed temporary command. Three weeks later Captain E. G. Benedict was relieved from duty as Regimental Per- sonnel Officer and assigned as C. O. In June orders were issued from the War Department creating the 604th Engineers and Company "G" was assigned to the 2nd Bat, talion as Company "D" 604th Engineers. On June 22nd a detach- ment of four officers and eighty soldiers under command of 1st Lieut. F. D. Myers reported to the Commanding Officer, Fort Hamilton, N. Y., for duty as Anti- Aircraft Defenses of New York City. This detachment went into four positions in and about New York City- operating Sperry 24-inch searchlights until August 1st. On that date they returned to Washington Barracks, having been relieved by similar personnel assigned from the 56th Engineers. They were then organized to full strength of seven officers and 250 soldiers for over- seas service, and left Washington Barracks, with Companies "E" and "F" 604th Engineers on August 10th for Camp Stewart, Newport News, Va. Four days later the Company embarked with a strength of 249 men and seven officers on the "Die Konigen der Niederlander" a con- verted Dutch liner. The trip was uneventful, the weather perfect and the sea calm. On August 24th, ten days out, eight British destroy- ers and a captive balloon met the convoy whereupon the U. S. pro- tection turned back. Land was sighted on August 25th and in single file the transports entered the land-locked harbor of Brest. Four days were spent at Plot No. 86, Pontanezen Barracks, living in pup- tents and existing from one field range with one G. I. can per Com- pany. The experience was a novel one and enjoyed by all— even more so was the order to entrain on August 29th. The trip was slow and after many delays the outfit arrived at Langres on September 2nd, and marched to the Searchlight School at Champigny. Upon arrival orders were found awaiting reassigning the Company to the 56th Engineers as Company "G." The men were billeted in the town, the Company organized into five platoons, and intensive searchlight instruction begun. On September 23rd Lieut. Trewin, with a platoon of fifty soldiers, proceeded to Colombey-les-Belles, the remainder of the Company com- 18 T he 5 6th E n gi neers pleting the course and following this platoon on October 21st. On November 1st the 32nd, 33rd and 34th Platoons were transferred to Company "E" 56th Engineers, and the 8th, 9th and 21st were assigned in their place. Captain Benedict and the 35th and 36th Platoons were assigned to Searchlight Defenses of Colombey-les-Belles. Preparation of these positions began on October 24th. The Defenses were arranged and placed for the protection of the First U. S. Air Depot. While but two bombing raids were made during the short time these defenses were in position, it is felt that the installation was entirely justified, for there is no doubt that, had not the Armistice caused hostilities to cease, the enemy would have made many bombing raids in the area. A quantity of bombs were dropped during the raids, but the combined defenses forced the planes to such an altitude that no material damage resulted and no injuries were received from either bombs or machine gun fire. After the Armistice orders were received to dismantle the defenses, turn in all equipment and prepare for the return voyage to the United States. In the World War 19 COMPANY "H"— 56TH ENGINEERS y J WAS formed at Washington Barracks, D. C. , in January 1918, as the 2nd Provisional Company under the com- mand of Captain Thomas A. Chandler, and about a month later was renamed Company "H." Prior to the departure for overseas of "B" and "D" Com- panies 56th Engineers, Lieutenants Mangold and Fawley were trans- ferred to them. Later Company " H " was renamed Company " E " 604th Engineers. On about June 23rd, 1918, Lieutenants Butler, McFerren, Phillip and Terrel, each in command of a platoon, were ordered to the de- fenses around New York, remaining there until August 1st. Upon return preparation was begun for shipment overseas. The command left the Barracks on August 11th and sailed from Newport News, Va. on August 14th. The harbor of Brest was not an unwelcomed sigh, on August 25th, and soon after debarking they proceeded to Cham- pigny, arriving there on September 2nd. A general A. E. F. order of reorganization transferred Company " E " to 56th Engineers as " H " Company. On September 16th the Company was ordered to Fort du Mont Valerien. The plan was to replace Company "C," which was with the First French Army. However, due to the pressing need of search- light units, this plan was given up. Lieutenant Phillip with the 38th Platoon relieved the 10th Platoon under command of Lieutenant Talley. The 10th was later transferred to " H " Company and the 38th to "C." Captain Chandler was relieved of command of the Company about October 10th and assumed command of the Fort. Lieut. McRae upon assuming command left with the outfit for Colom- bey-les-Belles and then for the Second Army area where it took position in expectation of the drive on Metz. After the Armistice the Company assembled at Colombey-les- Belles and entrained for the Base Port on January 3rd with the second phase. 20 T he 5 6 th Engineers COMPANY "I"— 56TH ENGINEERS 55 WAS organized in June 4th, 1918, with Captain W.L. Simpson in command. Its personnel was made up of men from the Second Battalion 603rd Engineers, and was augmented by men received from the Train- ing Camps. 1st. Lieut. S. J. Hibben was assigned to the Company and later assumed command. On August 1st Com- pany " I " became Company " D " 2nd Battalion 605th Engineers, with Captain Simpson temporarily in command of the 2nd Battalion. Company "D," together with Companies "E" and "F" 605th Engineers, left Washington Barracks September 19th, 1918 and pro- ceeded to Camp Merritt, N. J. with 250 men and the following officers: 1st Lieut. H. J. Kemp, Commanding; 1st Lieut. Murray G. Graff, 2nd Lieut. Wm. M. Pierson, 2nd Lieut. Arthur H. Rooney, 2nd Lieut. John H. Dubendorf. These troops embarked at Pier No. 59, New York, on the British Transport " Teucer " on September 24th. The trip across proved to be indeed a hard one, the ship was crowded and the seas very stormy. The " Flu " spread rapidly after a few days out, taking a toll of four deaths, Pvt. Clarence J. Popple, Pvt. John T. Hearth, Pvt. Harold B. Emerson, Sergt. Homer D. Zimmerman and Pvt. Albert Davis. The Battalion landed at Liverpool on October 8th, and then proceeded to Winchester, remaining in a " Rest Camp " for two days, thence to Southampton, embarking on the 12th of October, and arrived at Le Havre on the following morning. A few days were spent at an English Camp before proceeding to A. A. A. Schools at Champigny. Upon arrival the Battalion was transferred back to the 56th Engineers, Company " D " 605th Engineers becoming Company " I " 56th. On October 21st, 1st Lieut. Harry J. Lemp was detached 1st Lieut. Flittner assumed command. The Company was divided into four platoons and intensive training was begun. The Armistice found the men actively engaged and in preparation for work at the front. On December 11th the Company was re-organized and con- sisted of the following officers: Captain George F. Young in command, 1st Lieut. R. E. Dinsmore, 1st. Lieut. R. A. Traphagen, 1st. Lieut. Murray G. Graff, 2nd Lieut. J. L. Gilson, 2nd Lieut. John H. Dubendorf, 2nd Lieut. A. L. Wilson. On December 12th the outfit entrained at Langres and proceeded to Pont Rousseau, near Nantes, to await transportation to the United States. Captain Young took command of the first phase on December 21st and 1st Lieut. Flittner assumed command of the Company. On December 20th the journey to St. Nazaire began and two weeks later, January 4th, the unit boarded the U. S. S. Huron on sailing within an hour for the United States. In the World War 21 COMPANY "K"— 56TH ENGINEERS K*3&0i " WAS formed, on June 4th, 1918, per RSO 112, with 1st Lieut. W. E. Aymond in command and 1st Lieut. Oscar Segalowitz. The enlisted personnel consisted pp^ji of Sergeants Graff and Hands. Company "K" 56th Engineers, was merged into Company "E" 605th Engi- neers on August 1st, in accordance with RSO 221, Par. 4, bringing the total enlisted personnel up to 195 men. On August 23rd the Com- pany went to the Naval Rifle Range at Annapolis, Md. for two weeks instruction. While here 57 men and three officers were sent to the State Armory to do guard duty in connection with the movement of colored troops to a draft camp. The Governor of the State sent a letter of appreciation and commendation for these services rendered. The Company returned to Washington Barracks and on September 19th left for Camp Merritt, preparatory to going overseas. The command embarked on September 25th on the good ship "Teuser," arriving in Liverpool on October 8th. Three days were spent at a "Rest Camp" at Winchester, after which the Company pro- ceeded to Southampton and crossed the channel, landing at Le Havre on the 12th. After three days of another "Rest Camp" the journey was resumed to Champigny les Langres. Welcomed news awated there to the effect that Company "E" was transferred back to Com- pany "K" 56th Engineers, in accordance with G. 0. 135 GHQ, A. E. F. Shortly after arrival platoon organization was begun, with the following results: 47th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Arthur H. Johnson; 48th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. Arthur H. Rooney; 49th Platoon, 2nd Lieut. William M. Pierson; 50th Platoon, 1st Lieut. Frank A. Stein; 51st Platoon, 2nd Lieut. William P. Fyler. The Armistice came while these platoons were in training at the Searchlight School at Champigny. 22 T he 56th Engineers FORT MONT VALERIEN AMERICAN troops first arrived at Fort Mont Valerien, on the outskirts of Paris, on September 1, 1917. This detachment was composed of one officer and twenty men and was increased to two officers and 100 men on Sep- tember 20th all from the 1st Divisional Engineer Train. This place was the depot and training school for the French search- light troops and was located near the large industrial center of Suresnes and Puteaux. In December 1917, after the general search- light project had been authorized, a temporary searchlight depot was established here with Major John C. Gotwals as commanding officer. The work of securing equipment from the French was at once started. Experimental work in sound locators was carried on in close co-operation with the French School for sound locators at Ft. de Stains. Arrangements were rapidly made, running through January and February 1918, to instruct and equip searchlight troops arriving in France at this station. It was planned to give only the depot technical training here and to give the tactical training at the Army Schools in Langres. This station also served as a concentration post from which to send personnel for instruction and service with the British Army. The French searchlight service was to be greatly expanded, and as very little space was available at Fort Mont Valerien, permission was granted the Americans by the French Government to occupy in addition a plot of ground 100 by 300 meters on the adjoining land belonging to the Arsenal of Puteaux. This land was occupied on January 1st and two temporary buildings erected thereon. One of these buildings was to serve as an office building and the other as a shop and store room. On March 28th, 1918, the plans of the French were radically changed and all of the work of the French searchlight service was moved precipitously to the aviation center at Chartres. This left available considerable additional space at the fort and made the provision of the land removed from the fort largely unnecessary, except as a drill ground. On March 28th Companies "A" and "C" arrived at Fort Mont Valerien. Their equipment and training was at once begun. The German drive at this time toward Paris created the first emergency for the A. E. F., and in connection therewith, four platoons of search- lights from the troops at Fort Mont Valerien were offered to and accepted by the French Army. These four platoons were placed in ser- vice with the First French Army near Amiens, beginning May 15th, 1918. Companies "B" and "D" arrived at the fort on May 30th for equipment and training. On June 15th, 1918, in accordance with iJ *• In the World War 23 directions from the General Staff, six additional platoons were offered to the French Army for use in the existing emergency. These platoons left for the French Army on July 3rd, making a total of ten platoons turned over to the French. These were grouped into two companies. Company "C" and Company "B" were assigned to the First and Third French Armies, respectively. The German drive having ap- proached so near Paris as to interfere with the use of searchlights in training, and in view of the arrival of material in quantity from Amer- ica, it was directed to evacuate Fort Mont Valerien on July 1st as a training center. It was used, however, to supply the searchlight troops operating to the north of Paris, and for a depot for the recep- tion and overhauling of searchlight material received from the French. The work of this temporary depot therefore was much curtailed after July 1st, training being transferred to the Army Schools at Langres. Only one other company, Company "H," besides the companies described above was equipped at Fort Mont Valerien. This company was sent to this station on October 15th, 1918, to be equipped and to relieve Company "C," which had been then in active service with the First French Army for four months. The relief of Company "C" was not completed, as both Company "C" and Company "H" were ordered on October 26th to the First and Second American Armies respectively. Major William F. Tompkins was commanding officer of this depot from June 18th until August 31st. Major R. W. Lewis took the command on the latter date and was relieved on October 20th. Captain Thomas Chandler was Commanding Officer of this depot from October 20th until January 7th, 1919, at which time the depot was finally evacuated in conformation with the general plan for the embarkation of the 56th Engineers. ANTI-AIRCRAFT SEARCHLIGHT SCHOOL, LANGRES HIS school was established as a part of the Engineer, School in December 1917. 1st Lieut. Merritt T. Cooker with a detachment of 40 soldiers of the 56th Engineers, jg^M|^|jj was sent to this station as instructing personnel. The school was established in the village of Champigny and searchlight materiel was forwarded to this station from Fort Mont Valerien. A few huts were obtained locally and up to July 1st, 1918, three platoons of 50 men each had been instructed and equipped at this station, one of which was retained as instructing personnel. After July 1st the extension of searchlight training plans called for additional facilities at Champigny for 500 men. These facilities were obtained and six companies of searchlight troops were equipped and trained at that station. 24 T he 5 6 th Engineers It was expected that considerable co-operation could be obtained with the Anti-Aircraft Artillery. However, no training of any con- sequence was undertaken by the Anti-Aircraft Artillery at Langres, as all such training was given at the French School at Fort de Stains, near Paris. Great benefit, however, was obtained in the co-operative work done with the Anti-Aircraft Machine Gun School. As a result of the aid given to the Searchlight School by Major Drum, the Com- manding Officer of the Anti-Aircraft Machine Gun School, every soldier who received training at Champigny was given an excellent course in machine gun operation. At the close of hostilities this sta- tion was used as a point at which to concentrate and entrain the troops of the 56th Engineers for the base ports. TRAINING CENTER AND REGIMENTAL HEADQUARTERS COLOMBEY-LES-BELLES iN accordance with the plan to feed searchlight troops through the Army Schools to Colombey-les-Belles, and then to the future American Front, an Advanced Train- ing Center was established about one kilometer south of Colombey-les-Belles on July 21st, 1918. One platoon of the 56th Engineers, under the command of 1st Lieut. W. E. Scott, established this center in a little woods. At this station on August 29th, Headquarters of the 56th Engineers was established, with Lieut. Col. John C. Gotwals, Regimental Com- mander, and Major Alexander Macomber acting as Lieut. Colonel. The First American Army was moving forward into the Toul Sector to attack on the St. Mihiel Salient and every effort was made to dis- guise this concentration. Five searchlight companies with their equipment, and two additional platoons were forwarded through this center in connection with the operations in the First and Second Armies. The supplies required were forwarded to these companies and the necessary supervision carried out from this point. On Decem- ber 3rd Regimental Headquarters was moved from Colombey-les- Belles to the Army Schools area at Dampierre near Langres. This station was then occupied by Companies "E" and "H" 56th Engineers, awaiting transportation to the base ports until January 3rd, 1919, and was abandoned on January 5th, 1919. The following is a log of its operations: July 21st, 1918 — The Second Platoon of Company "A" 56thEnigneers, under the command of Lieutenant Scott proceeded from Lan- gres to Colombey-les-Belles to establish accommodations for training center. Anti-Aircraft guns and two machine guns; four platoons of Searchlights, of approxi- mately fifty men, each consisting of the 3rd Platoon of Company " A " under the command of Lieut. Meade Brunet; the 18th, 19th and 20th Platoons of Company " D " 56th Engineers, under com- mand of Lieutenants C. C. Boswell, H. R. Davis and H. P. Megargee respectively. The defenses were organized under Colonel Collins, C. A. C, as Defense Commander. First Lieut. M. T. Cooke, Jr., as Searchlight Officer, laid out the plans of the defenses, subject to the approval of the Anti- Aircraft Defense Commander. The searchlight equipment of the defenses was dug in on June 15th and consisted of two sixty-inch Sperry searchlights with glass mirrors, three French thirty-six-inch metal mirror searchlights and four thirty-six inch glass mirror Sperry searchlights. The power for the French lights was generated by Riker trucks, fitted with French generators, while the Sperry lights were all operated with a 17 KW Bouton French gas driven generating units. On August 28th the Platoons 3, 19 and 20, with all equipment, guarded by the 18th Platoon. The 28th, 29th and 31st Platoons, with approximately 150 men under command of 1st Lieut. R. A. Traphagen, 2nd Lieut. D. B. Page and 1st Lieut. S. S. Hertz, respectively, arrived on September 16th from the Searchlight Army School at Langres and took up the positions vacated. These platoons brought with them six sixty-inch Sperry searchlights and the 17 KW Bouton gas generat- ing sets which were secured about September 1st from the Engineer Depot. Major C. N. Wilson, C. A. C, relieved Colonel Collins who became Chief of the Anti-Aircraft Service of First Army. Captain Albert S. Hall arrived from Fort du Mont Valerien on August 10th to relieve Lieut. Cooke as Searchlight Officer for the defenses. No enemy planes ever approached Is-sur-Tille so there was no action. On December 3rd the Anti-Aircraft Artillery received orders to move to a port of embarkation, defenses being abandoned on December 5th by both the Artillery and Searchlight Troops. In the World War SEARCHLIGHT DEPOT AT GIEVRES i N June 17th, 1918, in accordance with Special Order 93, Par 1 Hq S O.S. a detachment consisting of two officers, Captain Carl A. Baer and Lieut. E. H. Watkins, to- gether with fifty soldiers of the 56th Engineers, were dis- patched from Fort du Mont Valerien, Paris to Gievres, reporting to the Commanding Officer at that station for duty under the Depot Engineer Officer for the establishment and operation of a Searchlight Depot. A temporary Searchlight Depot had been established in September 1917, at Fort du Mont Valerien for the reception of material and personnel of Searchlight troops and func- tioned as such until June 17th, 1918. During that period four com- panies consisting of twenty Searchlight Platoons were received, equipped and trained for service in the field. All their searchlights were of French manufacture with the exception of seven American and one British light. The searchlight trucks consisted of Riker trucks with direct connected French generators. Accessories such as the Distant Control were fabricated in the Machine Shop at the Fort. Paraboloids and various items of equipment were pur- chased from the French. With the expected arrival of searchlight material from the United States no further purchase of French searchlights and conversion of searchlight trucks was deemed necessary, and the site of the General Intermediate Storage Depot at Gievres was decided upon as the best location for a Depot. The personnel of the Detachment was picked from the Searchlight Forces then in the American E. F. It consisted of experienced electricians, gas engine men, paraboloid listeners machine gunners, motor drivers, mechanics and machinists, all of whom had previous training as pioneers and a number of whom had seen service at the British Front. A warehouse site was designated by the Depot Engineer Officer. Work was started on the erection of Searchlight Warehouse No. 5 which was completed by July 13th. A frame building was shipped from Fort du Mont Valerien and erected at the same time. The Searchlight Detachment started work on July 15th, erecting the Engineer Depot Machine Shop Building and completed it in twenty- three days. This building was 500 feet by 50 feet, constructed of heavy sawed timbers bolted on substantial concrete sills. On No- vember 11th the daily output of the Searchlight Machine Shop was one Distant Control complete with azimuth track, coupling and pickets, and one Telescope Mount. The total number of searchlights received by Searchlight Depot on the date of cessation of hostilities was 48 G. E. 60-inch and 23 G. E. 36-inch, and the total number shipped 28 T he 56th Engineers out was 37 G.-E. 60-inch and 16 G.-E. 36-inch, complete with acces- sories. Lights were being overhauled and shipped out at the rate of two per day, including the various accessories, spare parts and Distant Control, as well as the Searchlight Unit Equipment for platoons con- sisting of Engineers, Ordnance, Signal, Gas and Quartermaster ma- terial, which was drawn from the respective Depots at Gievres and the Depots at Is-sur-Tille. The result was that thirty complete searchlight outfits and all accessories could be turned out in fifteen days. This was sufficient material to equip one Army Corps, so indeed the Depot accomplished its purpose. In the World War 29 ANTI-AIRCRAFT EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOL AT PONT-SUR- SEINE, AND ISSOUDON NE platoon of the 56th Engineers equipped with one 90 cm French Searchlight was sent to Pont-sur- Seine, the site of a French Anti-Aircraft Searchlight School, at the request of the French. This platoon, the 21st, under the command of 1st Lieut. D. W. Blakeslee was to co-operate with the French and to develop methods of anti-aircraft searchlight operation. The personnel of the platoon was carefully selected and their work here attracted much commendation. Many investigations and studies for the American searchlight personnel were made. And a number of reports were sent to the United States. The platoon was moved in October 1918, at the request of the American Air Service to the Aviation Training Center at Issoudon. It was here that the air service was developing the use of pursuit planes for night flying with searchlights. A number of Intelligence Reports concerning this were prepared here. DEFENSES OF CHAUMONT pN the latter part of August 1918, Captain A. W. Bryan of /% the 56th Engineers was relieved from duty with the First ps^J* French Army and ordered to Chaumont to prepare search g lights in the defenses of that point. As a result of a short- age of searchlight material, and in view of the pressing need of searchlights in the Army Areas, these searchlights were never installed at this station. 30 T he 56th Engineers FINIS P^^T tne date of the Armistice the companies of the 56th Engineers were distributed through the A. E. F. and the regiment found itself on the schedule for early em- barkation to the United States. In view of the widely- scattered location of the units, the necessity of closing up the various activities efficiently and disposing of its special equip- ment, it was determined to return the regiment in three phases. The first phase, consisting of Companies "F," "I" and "K," en- trained from Langres on December 12, 1918 for Nantes, where the command went into billets at Pont Rousseau, a suburb of the city. On December 20th the command moved to St. Nazaire and sailed for home on January 4th, 1919 on the U. S. S. Huron. Arriving at New- port News January 17th, 1919, a few days were spent at Camp Stewart, after which the journey was resumed to Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va. for demobilization. The second phase consisted of Companies "D" and "G," then concentrated at the searchlight school at Champigny (Haute-Marne), and Companies "E" and "H," which had been concentrated at Colom- bey-les-Belles. They entrained on January 3, 1919, for Nantes, being billeted in the suburb of Vertou for several weeks. The journey was resumed to St. Nazaire and the command embarked for the United States on the U. S. S. Nansemond on February 26, 1919, arriving at Newport News, Va. on March 11, 1919, and proceeded to Camp Mor- rison, Va. for demobilization. The remaining units of the regiment, consisting of Headquarters and Companies "A" and "B," were concentrated at Dampierre Haute- Marne with Company "C" nearby at Champigny, and the work of winding up the activities of the regiment was prosecuted. Equip- ment was turned in, captured enemy material prepared for shipment to the United States and records brought up to date. On February 1st the command entrained at Langres for Nantes, remaining in billets in the suburbs of San Sebastien and Le Douet for many weary weeks, awaiting ship assignment for home. Finally on April 1st the move was made to St. Nazaire, from which port the command sailed on April 13th aboard the U. S. S. Rijndam, arriving at Newport News, Va. on April 25th, 1919. From here these last units of the regiment proceeded to Camp Lee, Va., where demobilization occurred, with the exception of a few officers and men who remained in the service tem- porarily to wind up the affairs of the regiment. This detachment proceeded to Camp Humphreys and thence to Washington Barracks, the old home and birthplace of the regiment In the World War 31 in the United States. Shortly after the completion of reports, Camp Humphreys again became the station, and on this post the records were filed and the 56th Engineers passed into history. "Finally, it is desired to call attention to the extent of the work performed by this regiment, the intelligence with which it was prose- cuted, and the arduous work involved. The needs of the A. E. F. in anti-aircraft defense, insofar as searchlights were concerned, were met perfectly at all times. At the same time, considerable assistance was given to the French and British armies, both in the service of units turned over to those armies, and in the assistance given in devel- oping means for meeting this new problem. The advanced units of this regiment endured hardships which were equal to those of divisions occupying the front line. These units were not relieved and rested at intervals of from two to three weeks as was done with divisions. This service, particularly in the case of Companies "A," "B" and "C" was in effect a continuous service of six months in front-line opera- tions. The lack of material from America and the inadequacy of material secured in France was largely compensated for by the activ- ity, gallantry and intelligence of the soldiers of this regiment. Com- plete searchlights were thrown together and built out of scraps of material gathered from any possible source. All of this work and hardship was endured not only uncomplainingly but with a zest and a zeal that remained always undiminished. It is desired to again render the highest tribute to the patriotism and devotion of the officers and soldiers of this regiment." Extract from report to Chief of Engi- neers, A. E.
