C. BY ROGERS PEET & COMPANY M DCCC XCVIII No, WE are not going to say that we have better shoes than any- body else, because we haven't. There are a number of dealers that have just as good. The advantage you get here is the certainty of as good shoes as the money you pay can buy ; for you get the truth about them — just what they are and just how they are made. >? You get them for what they cost us plus an honest profit, and if they don't prove satisfactory you get your money back. To how many shoe stores can you go and get satisfaction if you are dis- satisfied ? Or if you get it, through what a sea of vexations and petty an- noyances must you wade before you get it. If you are dissatisfied here, we make you Judge and Jury; we give you your money back without a question. Foot-notes : We have visited the shops of the several first-rate shoemakers and have ROGERS PEET & COMPANY found that, with a singular unanimity, one and all were producing the same style of shoe. We further found that there is not a single ready-made dealer who has been or is producing this style; so we, who are ready-made dealers, have chosen it. There's nothing radical about it, nothing patent about it; it's not a cure for misshapen feet; it's merely a gentleman's shoe — good form, in both sense of shape and the meaning of style. It is a shoe that these first-rate shoe- makers sell for $io, $12, and $14; we charge but $5.00, and not one of you can tell the difference, either when first putting it on or when taking it off to throw away. We have christened this shoe the "Model," because we couldn't think of any better name to call it, and we have made it in all the various leathers and in all the various styles. Of course we can't expect all of you to agree with us that this is the most stylish of shoes; therefore we have ready all the other good styles, from the comparatively narrow toe to the decidedly broad. C. BY ROGERS PEET & COMPANY M DCCC XCVIII *''V g 'm ' -t^ "Y O LONGER does the l^^k sign "Gents* Furnishing I ^^^ Goods" rest in smug I ^^ self-complacency over ' -^ ^ the entrance of the bet- ter shops that sell neck- wear and all the little essentials of men's dress. "Haberdashery/' de- rived from the English " berdash," an old-time neck-dress, fittingly takes its place ; and prices have not increased in consequence. Of peculiar interest is the fact that under the regime of gents' furnishing goods many of the articles sold, such as gloves, neckwear, underwear, night- shirts, and the like, were invariably made to order; but with the better taste of haberdashery has come the common-sense view that most of these things can be got ready-made to the satisfaction of most men. There is but one real exception, and that is the one exception to our ready-made policy, namely, shirts. There is probably no article of wearing apparel about which finicky man is so &nicky ; and ROGERS PEET Sr COMPANY although our stock of shirts is large and complete, and although we sell (so we are told) more ready-made shirts than any other one dealer, we recognize the demand for shirts made to order by making them to order. One other article is, so to speak, on the fence — collars. But we have all the styles made by two of the most famous collar-manufacturers, and we take our stand firmly by them. With these two exceptions, we buy the same goods from the same manu- facturers as any and all of the ex- clusive, high-priced sellers of haber- dashery in New York City; but besides having the same things that they have, we have what they don't deign to have — good, every-day, sensible articles for the man of small wants or small purse. We sell the same goods for less money than they, of course, and in addition make right anything that may not turn out right. We feel safe in saying that every kink and quirk of fashion in haber- dashery may be found at our stores, or if not found, will be found for you. C. BY ROGERS PEET & COMPANY MDCCCXCVIII -^ Traacferre*? from MAY M '^^' IF YOU have fallen Into that unfortunate habit of judging by the exterior shell, without so much as a thought for the kernel within the shell ; in other words, if a much-bebraided suit causes you to forget that there is cloth be- neath the braid — cloth that can change or remain fast in color, cloth that may be properly or improperly cut, cloth that is well or badly sewn ; or if the glamor of 98 cents as against an even dollar makes the question of how long a suit will wear one of secondary consideration, don't bother with us, for we can't interest you. We first of all make our boys' suits right, just as right as our men's suits ; then we make them " pretty." For this we charge as little as such sort of work will allow ; but, nevertheless, in price we do not pretend to compete with the dealers in "cheap" clothing — we don't want to. But at any lower prices than ours, no one can compete with us ; and no one attempts to compete with us in ROGERS PEET Sr COMPANY our willingness to make right what- ever may go wrong. Don't imagine from this that our clothes for boys are foolishly fine or the work needlessly good. They are chosen for and made for boys, with the knowledge that there is no animal so hard on his clothes as a boy, with the realization of how fast boys "shoot up." And knowing all this, we are able to say that we can clothe your boy for less a year than you can clothe him elsewhere — or we'll give you your money back. Suppose you try. But it's true, nevertheless, that there is no other article of wear- ing apparel that should have bestowed upon it the thought and care de- manded by boys' shoes. Now, this prelude doesn't mean that we have some hygienic model to foist upon you, some special style of which to sing the praises; we simply believe in shoes for boys that conform as much as possible to the natural foot — as much as possible without losing all sense of good looks and style; we believe in shoes for boys that are strongly enough made to bear, without flinching, the con- stant rubadubdub of the healthy boy in motion ; we belfeve in shoes for boys that are little enough priced to admit of a growing boy wearing them. WE TRY to live up to these beliefs; if we fail, or if the shoes v/e sell fail in the slightest degree, we content our- selves with the knowl- edge that you are amply protected by our well-known policy of "your money back if you want it." BY ROGERS PEET & COMPANY MDCCCXCVIII Polo Golf Tarn Cadet Skating DAME FASHION doesn't draw the line so closely about boys' hats as about men's, for, being a wom- an herself, she can feel for the mother who will not buy hats for her boy that make him appear old, lest her own age might be too apparent. What is be- coming, what is pretty, is what is sought after. We have remembered that ; but we have not forgotten quality, for it is quality that wins in the final race. You will undoubtedly have prices quoted that are lower, much lower, than ours ; but they will not be for the same quality of hats, remember, be- cause while our stock contains all the various new sorts and styles of hats that boys or boys' mothers could want, other dealers' stocks may con- tain as many. So the one advan- tage we offer or intend to offer is: the same as other good dealers at lower prices, or — your money back if you want it. C. BY ROGERS PEET & COMPANY M DCCC XCVIII MAY g m YOUR MODERN boy is a boy without a boyhood — he's born a man ; he wants to do just what his father does ; he wants to wear just what his father wears ; and what he wants he usually gets. Each of our big stores has, grouped in one little store by itself, all the little essentials to boys' dress — man's wear- ables with the mannishness taken out. This little store has more care and time bestowed upon it than many another of ten times its size ; every- thing is there, and everything has to do double duty — to be at once manly for the boy and dainty for the mother. The new things that appear in our men's store are almost invariably, al- most immediately, copied for boys; for these two stores go hand in hand as father and son, and, like father and son, each helps the other. We think that what we sell is right, and we feel that the prices at which we sell are right; but if one or both ROGERS PEET <&- COMPANY should prove wrong, we make them right. How? By returning your money or giving you new goods. Could we do more ? Could you ask more ? Could you do better than to buy all his little wants at just such a little store ? <^>=> THE STRIKE OF WILLIE'S CLOTHES*— Continued A Resolution, then, proposed By Oxford Shoe and seconded By White Cravat (no one opposed), Was passed — and this is how it read : WHEREAS, one William Thingum Tite, Has shown himself for clothes unfit, WHEREAS, we, Undersigned, His Clothes, Are painfully aware of it ; *"Thc Strike of Willie's Clothes" was begun in the Fifth Little Book of " The Works of Rogers Pcet & Company." 8 ROGERS PEET &- COMPANY WHEREAS, said William never pays Us the attention that we like ; RESOL VED, unless he mend his ways, We, Undersigned, His Clothes, WILL STRIKE !
