The objects of the Society are " To collect, preserve, and disseminate the local and general history of Medford, and the genealogy of Medford families ; to make antiquarian collections ; to collect books of general history, genealogy, and biography ; and to prepare, or cause to be prepared, from time to time such papers and records relating to these subjects as may be of general interest to the members." The Society entered at once upon an active and aggressive existence. During its first year it planned and carried to a successful issue a series of entertain- ments, conceded to be the finest ever presented to a Medford audience. The home of the Society is the old Francis House, corner of Ashland and Salem Streets, the birthplace of Lydia Maria Child. The house was purchased by the Society the past year. The present membership is about two hundred and seventy-five. The admission fee is two dollars, which also pays the annual dues for a year ; there- after the annual charge is one dollar. Monthly meetings are held from October to May, inclusive, at which papers on topics of local interest are read and discussed. Informal talks are also given on the first Saturday evening of the winter months. You are cordially invited to become a member of the Society and lend your aid to our work. ISjifltortral Srgtster A N important feature of the Society's work is the "**" Historical Register, issued quarterly, and devoted to matters of local history. The series of leading articles which have been published is of much interest and value. As a pleasing evidence of the worth of the magazine, it may be mentioned that among the subscribers are the New York Public Library, the Newberry Library, Chicago, New York Historical Society, Princeton University, Columbia University, etc. Among the fifty or more "exchanges" may be noted the State libraries of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsyl- vania, Kansas, Iowa, and the National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden. Some of the more important papers which have been published are as follows : — The Schools and Schoolmasters of Colonial Days in Medford B. F. Morrison Middlesex Canal Lorin L.
