Edited by C. S. Scott, Phoenix, Arizona. PUBLISHBD 1902 And sold to subscribers for Fifty Cents, INTRODUCTORY. In this little publication is presented the genealogical record of the descendants of Thomas Scott and Sarah Hale. It is necessarily incomplete in some of the later generations, though I believe, in names at least, it contains every member of the family in the older generations, except possibly some who died in infancy and were known only in original family Bibles. In the later generations I believe it to be fairly complete as to names, to within the last twenty years, and wherever the data was available I have carried it down to the present day. With sufficient time, labor and expense it could be completed in full to date, but as it is, it represents infinite labor and considerable time and money. I feel that I have done my part, and there is no copyright on the publication. I not only give permission, but request any interested member of any branch of the family to use any part of it desirable in the compiling of a complete record of his family, or all of it should any be so ambitious as to undertake a complete genealogy of the whole family. All I ask is that any person so availing himself, send me a copy of his publication for my personal edification. In the presentation of this data I have tried to be accurate and I think with good success, though it is altogether likely some errors appear. This is due to the fact that my data has been gathered from correspondence. People do not always write legibly and the persons furnishing the information may have been careless in transcribing it from old records, as I may have been in some of the many times I have found it necessary to write and rewrite, in the evolution of the method I adopted for keeping my data properly classified. The frequent recurrence of the same name in different families made necessary the most careful systematizing to prevent confusion. In conclusion I wish to acknowledge at this time my obligations to every one of the scores who have aided me in this work in one way or another. While it may have seemed a little thing at the time to answer a letter enclosing a few dates, this publication is but a compilation of those little things. Those who have rendered favors are too numerous to mention by name, but there are a few whose efforts in my behalf were not only invaluable but were made at great personal inconvenience or labor. I first wish to speak of my mother's mother, Mrs. Hannah Niles, who, though not a member of the Scott family, gave me the primary historical outline which was the basis of my work. She lived in childhood in Vermont, the geo- graphical home of the Scott family. Her wonderful memory and long observation gave me many facts when most needed. This best of women was born February 7, 1802, and died in Burlingame Kansas, at the age of 100 years one month and thirteen days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. E. Wood, who with her husband also afforded me early inspiration. To Joseph Elliott Harris, who died in New York not many years ago, I am indebted for a great portion of the record of the Harris branch. To D. Q. Woodruff of St. Jonhs- bury, Vermont, I am under obligations largely for the record of the branch of the family to which he belongs, and the same is true of Rev. Charles Scott of Reading, Mass.; Leslie Scott of New York city, formerly Brattleboro, and Miss Julia Ann Scott of Mount Lebanon, N. T. There are many others, old and young, but the list is too long to enumerate and the word must be accepted for the deed. In presenting the pictures of D. Q. Woodruff and Rev. Charles Scott the reader is permitted to view the likeness of fitee two men of whom the family should be proud; not for notable achievements, for l have found few in my researches who have become "great" in the eyes of the world, but for their strength of character and exemplary lives as the real types of the Scott family. It also pleases me to say that if black sheep have found record in these pages their deeds have utterly escaped my knowledge and I could wish to have my name appear in no more reputable company than a Scott genealogy. My own picture is presented at the earnest request of a few and to satisfy the possible curiosity of others. C. S. SCOTT. HOW TO FIND YOURSELF. The scheme on which this record is compiled is as follows: All data I have secured regarding the progenitors of the family, Thomas Scott and Sarah Hale, together with all the data I have obtained relative to their immediate children, is found in Chapter I. Chapter II is devoted to the record of all the descendants of their eldest child, Clarissa. Chapter III is devoted to the record of all the descendants of their second child, Thomas, Jr. Chapter IV is devoted to the record of the descendants of the third child, and so on to the end. There are few people who do not know the name of their grand- father and their great grandfather. There are few members of the family old enough to read this book who cannot And the name of either their father, grandfather or great grandfather or his wife, as the case may be, somewhere in the last column of the diagram found on the preceding page. They will then know the chapter in which their individual record is found; the chapter devoted to their branch of the family. Every reader should peruse the first chapter and then if not interested in distant relatives, pass on to the chapter treating of his branch of the family. In the second and all subsequent chapters, the subject of each paragraph printed in full measure is a full cousin of the subject of every other paragraph printed in full meas- ure in other chapters and the brother or sister of the others in full measure in his own chapter. The first indention thereafter shows the next generation, the second indention the subsequent generation, etc., except in such cases as the information relative to later gener- ations was so meager it was included in the record of the parents. ILLUSTRATION: My father's name is Henry, my grandfather's name was Asahel, as also was my great grandfather's. I read the first chapter, then find the name of my grandfather in the last column of the diagram, which directs me to chapter VI for the later history of my branch of the family. It should be further noted that there is a frequent repetition of names, some appearing in different families in the same or other generations. Clarissa, for instance, appears in nearly every family in the last column of the diagram. In that event the reader can discover by noting the names of her brothers or sisters, which iB the Clarissa sought for. CHAPTER I. The earliest knowledge of Thomas Scott, that I have been able to secure, is purely traditional. I began work upon the genealogical record set forth in the following pages in 1882, and it was related to me then by the older members of the family and by others of con- temporaneous time, that some time between the years 1750 and 1755 Thomas Scott was kidnaped at his home somewhere in England, taken on board a vessel bound for America for the purpose of preventing him from inheriting a fortune of greater or lesser amount, and that on his arrival in New England he was bound out for a term of years by the master of the ship who desired in that way to remunerate himself for the expense of the lad's voyage over. The first authentic record of the young man's career was origi- nally secured from the town clerk of Ashford, Windham county. Connecticut, and relates that Thomas Scott, who was born in 1744, and Sarah Hale, who was born in 1748, were joined in marriage February 16, 1769. Thomas Scott at the same time received a deed to six acres of land from John Hale, presumably his father-in-law, and one John Scott witnessed the deed. This information was furnished to me by one of the members of the Scott family with whom I was in correspondence when 1 began my work. In the summer of 1781 Thomas Scott and wife moved to Halifax, Vermont, where they raised a family of ten children and spent the rest of their lives, supposedly, as Thomas Scott died there June 3, 1802, and was buried in Halifax Center. His wife died February 27th, 1805. The farm in Halifax on which they settled passed in ownership to their son, Abel, then to Martin Scott, then to George M. Scott and son Myrten H., who now lives upon it. The names of the children of Thomas Scott were Clarissa, Thomas, Abel, Sally, Asahel, Joel, James, Henry, Elijah and Ruby. The exact order of their birth is a matter of doubt, as different records give different dates for some of them. My grandmother on my mother's side, Mrs. Samuel Niles, born in 1802, and familiar with the early history of the Scott family, tells me it was a matter of general belief among those with whom she was acquainted that Asahel Scott was the oldest child. I have also seen one record in which his birth is recorded as having occurred July 2, 1768, but which, if true, would suggest an embarrassing situation, as the record of his father's marriage is some seven months later. Another record announces the birth of Joel on July 26, 1779, while still another records the birth of Abel October 9, 1779. Both cannot be right. But some order must be observed, and after the most diligent search I have been able to make I have adopted the following order as a basis of work, using the undisputed dates given and placing the others in accordance with the explanation that follows: Clarissa, born 1770; Thomas, December 23, 1772; Abel, October 9, 1774; Sally, 1776; Asahel, July 2, 1778; Joel, July 26, 1779; James, Octo- ber 26, 1781; Henry, November 23, 1783; Elijah, 1785; Ruby, 1788. In placing the birth of Asahel in the year 1778 instead of 1768, as one record gives it, thus making him the fifth child instead of the first, my reasons are simply that the date of the birth of Clarissa seems undisputed, it is possible that in either the recording or the reading of the record of the birth of Asahel the third figure may have been taken for a 6 when a 7 was intended or actually written. Further, between 1774 and 1779 there is no authentic record of the birth of any of the children and Sally is said by some to have been born after Elijah, a statement not at all improbable. During the five years from '74 to '79 the birth of two children might have oc- curred without a violation of natural law. I think it highly probable therefore that Asahel was born in '78 and at any rate have given him the benefit of the doubt. As for Sally it is in a measure immaterial as she had but one child and of her descendants, if any, I have been able to learn abso- lutely nothing. Of the life and achievements of Thomas Scott. Sr., I have learned nothing in addition to the above. SECOND GENERATION. CLARISSA Scott was born in Ashford, Conn., in 1770. In 1790 she was married to Joshua Harris, son of Job Harris, who moved with his family from New London, Conn., to Halifax in 1789. To the union of Clarissa Scott and Joshua Harris were born ten children, all in Halifax. Their names were Lydia, Lucy, Clarissa, Samuel, Ebe- nezer, Joshua, Joel, Reuben, Eunice and Joseph Elliott. To the latter, who died but a few years ago, I am indebted largely for the record I have of the Harris branch of the Scott family. Joshua Harris, Sr.. died in Halifax, Vt., July 3, 1837. His wife, Clarissa, died of palsy September 22, 1833, in Halifax. THOMAS Scott, Jr., was born in Ashford, Conn., December 23, 1772. He moved with his parents to Halifax, Vt., where he married Ann Carpenter and by whom he had three children. Two died in infancy and the third, Anna, grew to womanhood. Ann Carpenter Scott died October 28, 1806, and Thomas Scott was married in Lyn- don, Vt., by Rev. Phineas Peck, to Abigail Winslow, who was born November 28, 1784 in Sandwich, N. H. They had eight children — Sally, Phineas, Cynthia, Mary, Betsy Angeline, Henry James, Clarissa Jane, and Horatio Plumb. Abigail died August 12, 1849 in Burke, Vt., and Thomas died and was buried in the same place February 6, 1851. ABEL Scott, according to one record that was furnished me, and is asserted to be correct, was born in Ashford, Conn., October 9, 1774. He went to Halifax with his parents, where in 1796 he was married to Polly Cook, who was born in 1772. They had three children- Reuben, Freeman and Emily. Polly died March 20, 1805. (One rec- ord says 1808.) Abel then married Lydia Crozier, October 3 of the same year, 1805. Lydia was born in Halifax, June 29, 1777. Eight children were born to them — Polly, Cynthia, Sally, Lyman, Lydia, Martin, Abel and Reuben. Abel senior spent his whole life on the land taken up by his father when the family moved from Ashford to Halifax, and died and was buried in Halifax, May 25, 1856. His second wife, Lydla, died in Halifax, September 21, 1872. It is said that Abel served as captain in the army, probably in the war of 1812. SALLY Scott was born, probably in Ashford, Conn., in 1776, moving with the family to Halifax. She married Samuel Crozier after which she lived but a few years, dying in Halifax, May 12, 1809, of palsy. They had but one child, Maria, and of her or her possible descendants I have learned nothing. ASAHEL Scott was born in Ashford, Conn., July 2, 1778, according to the record I have accepted, though another record says July 2, 1768. He moved to Halifax in 1781 and married Elizabeth Peck, who was born in New Hampshire, August 29, 1772. The date of their marriage is unknown. In 1810 they moved to East Smithfield, Bradford county, Pa., then practically a wilderness, settled on a farm and raised a family of eight children — Linda, Ansel, Celia, Asahel, Eliza, Aaron Culver, Elmina and Benjamin Peck. Asahel senior died December 29, 1823, in East Smithfield, and his wife died May 10, 1847, in Springfield, Bradford county, Pa. After the death of Asahel senior the farm came into the possession of Asahel junior, who retained it till late in the '60s, when he sold out to a cousin, Orrin Scott, and it is now in the possession of one of his children, having been owned by some member of the family continuously for nearly a hundred years. JOEL Scott, the last member of the family born in Ashford, Conn., first saw the light July 26, 1779. He went to Vermont with his parents but must have returned to Connecticut when a young man, for January 14, 1805, he was married in Manchester, Conn., to Clarissa Risley, who was born in Manchester, July 7, 1780. They settled down in Halifax and to the union were born Ruby, Orrin, Susan R., Oliver W. and Clarissa M. Clarissa senior died in Halifax June 7, 1822. May 27, 1823, Joel was married in Halifax to Elizabeth Hall, who was born July 7, 1783, in Somers, Conn. They had one child, named Charles. Joel died in Halifax, July 28, 1849, also on the same land secured by his father when the family moved from Ashford. Elizabeth, his second wife, died in Gloucester, R. I., March 16, 1875, and was taken to Halifax for interment beside her husband. Joel, it is said, was a captain in the American army, but whether in the war of 1812 or the French and Indian war I am not informed. JAMES Scott, who also served his country in the army, gaining the rank of captain, was born in Halifax, October 26, 1781. April 12. 1810, he was married to Clarissa Smith, who was born in Marlboro. Vt., July 23, 1787. Eleven children were born to them — Thomas, Jonas, Henry, Alson, Oshea, Clarissa, James Hale, Martin, Horace, Lucy Tucker, and Sarah Jane. Captain James Scott died in Halifax, May 27, 1850, having spent his entire manhood on the farm he first settled upon in early life. His wife died in Brattleboro, March 31, 1879, in her ninety-second year. HENRY Scott was born November 23, 1783, in Halifax, Vt., and died in Waterville, Me., September 20, 1859. He was buried in Athens, Me. His wife, Sarah Jones, was born October 18, 1785, in North Yarmouth, Me., and died in Athens, Me., February 18, 1876. They were married in North Yarmouth, Me., October 8, 1807. Their chil- dren were Elizabeth Hobart, Sarah Ann, Mary Hale, Sarah Maria, David Henry, Clarissa Ruby and Henry Milton. ELIJAH Scott was born in Halifax, Vt., September 4, 1785. Betsy Woodward was born April 19, 1788. They were married Feb- ruary 5, 1807, and settled in Bennington, of revolutionary fame. Their children were Diana, Julia Ann, Freeman, Elijah, Jr., Chester. Betsey, Timothy, Alvin, Timothy 2nd, Abel, Samuel, Ruth and Julia Ann 2nd. Elijah senior died in North Bennington, Vt., December 3, 1840, and was buried in Shaftsbury, "Vt. Betsy, his wife, died in Mount Lebanon, N. Y., in the Shaker settlement, August 31, 1863, and wag buried in Shaftsbury, Vt. RUBY Scott, the third daughter and youngest child of Thomas and Sarah Scott, was born in Halifax in 1788. She died while yet a young woman, succumbing March 9, 1805, to palsy, of which both her sisters died and which seems to have been a family disease. She died and was buried in Halifax, and so far as I can learn was never married. 10 CHAPTER II. THIRD AND LATER GENERATIONS— DESCENDANTS OF CLARISSA SCOTT AND JOSHUA HARRIS. LYDIA Harris, the eldest child of Clarissa Scott and Joshua Harris, was born in Halifax, Vt., October 16, 1791. She was married in Halifax to Uriah Thayer.
