PICTURESQUE NEW ENGLAND NEW ENGLAND, that many-sided section of our great country, has no more interesting phase than its historic one. The list of places, buildings, and sites that have figured in early history contained in this brochure, complete as it may seem, represents but a tithe of the number that could be collected in this way. There is scarcely a city, town, or hamlet in New England that does not possess some building of historic interest, be it only the former abiding-place of some great American. Cities like Boston, Salem, Newburvport, Haverhill, and Portsmouth, and towns like Concord, Lexington, Marblehead, Ipswich, and Danvers, have many of these historic shrines. Thousands of patriotic Americans come from all over the country to see Eaneuil Hall, the Old State House, and the Old South Meeting House in Boston; the scenes of the first conflict in behalf of American liberty in Concord and Lexington; the birthplace of Longfellow in Portland ; the house of seven gables and the scene of the witchcraft trials in Salem ; the Way- side Lin in Sudbury; the Whittier homes in Haverhill and Amesburv; the humble house in Amherst, N. H., in which the great Horace Greeley was born; the Rebecca Nourse house in Danvers, Mass., and the many other historic buildings and landmarks with which New England is so plenteously endowed. In no part of the New World can one find such diversified and inspiring relics of the past. And what a wonderful natural setting most of these historic shrines have ! Nowhere are there such attractive cities, such well-ordered towns, such charming villages. Towns like Lancaster and Hadley, Mass., with their glorious elms, have no exact counterpart on the continent. In the architecture of churches, colleges, and public buildings, too, there is much to admire. Splendid highways, extensive natural parks, glorious lakes and rivers, and glimpses of seashore and beautified railroad station grounds everywhere abound. Truly, the historic and the picturesque blend most delightfully in New England. r- ^-A"^^ RAILROAD ■zT^cM CONCORD BRIDGE, BRITISH MONUMENT IN DISTANCE Reached via Fitchhurg and Southern Divisions^ Boston and Maine R.
