KENTS HILL, MAINE Guilford and Sangerville Town Register 1904 INDIAN HISTORY ALONG THE PENOBSCOT The story of the Indians in the state of Maine is ever interesting. Especially is that of the region of the Penobscot Valley. This race of men is the snbject of pity as well as of hatred, hated for their crnelty, and pitied for their misfortune at the hands of their more civilized fellows, the Anglo Saxons. We of a later day can look upon this race in a spirit of greater fairness than could our ancestors whose view of the redman was obscured by his late acts of rapine and plunder. As we read history let us remember that they were struggling to retain their own domain, to defend their ' ' Fatherland ' ' against the acts of the aggressive pale face whose deeds of power we delight to honor. TRir.ES OF THE PENOBSCOT In our l)rief sketch wc cannot attempt to trace tllSTORICAt. in full the descent of the Indian tribes of this region. It is unnecessary. We will begin by stating that the Indians of the state of Maine generally were divided into the following tribes: The Sokokis, of the Saco river region; the Amasagunticooks or Abenakis, of the Androscoggin and lower Kenne- bec region, the Canibas, of the Norridgewock region; and the Warenocks of the eastern part of Maine as now known. Of these the latter are to us most interesting. Another almost synonymous name for this tribe is the Etchemin tribe. This tribe however included the Indians to the extreme headwaters of the Penobscot and the St. John River. This tribe is usually divided into three divisions, viz: those on the St. John; those of the Passamaquoddy; and the Tarratines of the Penob- scot, of whom we are most concerned. It is un- doubtedly true that this tribe is the ancestor of the present remnant known as the Penobscot tribe. This tribe claimed dominion over the entire Penob- scot Valley from the headwaters to the sea. Concerning these Indians we here quote Mr. Wihiamson as follows: "They were a numerous, powerful and warlike people, more hardy and brave than their western enemies, whom they often plundered and killed, and according to Hubbard and Price, kept the Sycamores between the Pis- cataqua and the Mistic in perpetual fear. After the conquests and glory achieved in their battles mSTORlCAt. 7 with the Babshaba and his allies, they were not, like their enemies, wasted by disease and famine. They retained their valor, animated by success and strengthened by the early use and supply of tire- arms, with which they were furnished by the French. The Tarratines ever manifested the greatest satisfaction in their intercourse with the French. No fortifications upon the peninsula of Major Bigu3^duce, or buildings in the vicinity, ex- cited either fear or jealousy in them for no rising plantations of the French threatened them with the loss of their lands or privileges. A barter of their furs for guns, ammunition and trinkets was managed with a freedom and a directness w^hich won and secured their attachments. Their com- panionable manners and volatile turn made the bonds strong and lasting. The Tarratines have probably at ditferent periods shifted the situation of their principal village. At the mouth of the Kenduskeag the}' had a common resting place when the white people first settled in that vicinity — a place to which the}^ were from habit strongly attached. Here the mouldering relics of human bodies, also flint spears, stone implements of labor, and Indians paint dust have been accidentally dis- interred after a burial of an unknown period of tinie. The Tarratines were neutral in the war of \\]c Revolution. In return Massachusetts, of w Inch this region was a part at that time, protect- 8 filStORICAL. ed them and prohibited all trespass upon their lands six miles in width on each side of the Penob- scot, from the Head of Tide upwards. The State from time to time bought large tracts of land from them till their territory was greatly diminished in size. These Indians when they were first seen by the whites dwelt on both sides of the river and in conjunction with the other tribes roamed the whole of the state of Maine to the westward of this region. That they wandered far from their Penobscot home is evident. One historian asserts that the chief Samoset who met the English at Plymouth with the words "Welcome Englishmen" in their own tongue was a Tarratine, and came from the Island of Monhegan. WARS OF THE TARRATINES The Indian seemed to be fated to be the opponent of the Englishman; in religion, and personal make up the Englishman was at a very serious disadvantage as compared with the French- man, with his vivacious ways, and his attractive and impressive religious services. It is probable that the most of the English had serious intentions and an honest purpose to deal justly with the red- man. Their charters called for religious training, forbade the sale of liquors to them and in everyway enjoined their training in the channels of civiliza- llISTORICAt.. 9 tion. Hut the Frenchmen did all in his power to engender the spirit of animosity which was early started in the breast of the savage. Only one re- sult could possibly be and that was war. But though the Indians were graduall}^ drifting to hostilities they were hurled headlong into an open conflict by Weymouth's infamous seizure of five of their tribe in 1805. 1631 or 1632 there was an outbreak between the Tarratines and their rivals but the conflict was not long prolonged nor l^lood}'. The great war with the Mohawks about 1663 great- ly discomforted the Tarratines, their dreaded enemies following them even to the banks of the Penobscot, burning their dwellings, and doing great harm in accordance with Indian warfare. Soon Small Pox devastated the tribe till it was almost exterminated. No further action in warfare was participated in by these Indians till the coming of Maj. Church in 1694, who laid waste their fields and killed several of the natives. In 1772 Love well's War opened and lasted three 3'ears. The war was thus named for Capt. Lovewell of Dunstable, the hero of the battle of Pequaket. The warfare was carried to the Pen()l)scot Valley, and began at the arrival of Col. Thomas Westbrook in 1723. Thisexepedi- tiou was made up of two hundred thirty. They scurried ihc coast of Mt. Desert iu whaling l)oals and small vessels, and then ])roceeded up the 10 niSTORlCAL. Penobscot, anchoring at Marsh Island, it is stated, on March 4 of that year. Here they left their boats and began five days march through the forests near the river. At the Old Indian Fort which they found deserted the company destroyed everything of value. It is stated that this fort was situated in Orono about six miles above Kendus- keag. After the destruction of the buildings about the Fort the whites returned. About two 3^ears later when the Tarratines had rebuilt the village, Capt. Joseph Heath with his company crossed the country and attacked the village, laying it in ashes. No Indians were found. The village was never rebuilt, Oldtown being the place finally settled upon as their future abode. In October 1723 a vessel landing at Mt. Desert, Capt. Cogswell commanding, was attacked b}^ the Indians, the whole crew being captured. The wars being over the Indians returned to their usual customs, hunting and fishing. Gradually, by treaty and by other courses the English came into possession of the lands along the Penobscot. The Indians were greatly cheated in these deals, but managed to retain possession of certain tracts, and to this day have control of a large number of Islands in the Penobscot. They also have a large sum in the hands of the state which is hold en as a perpetual fund for their support on which the state pa3^s interest annually. In all the Indian tribe re- niSTOUR'AL 11 ceives not far from $8000 i)er year from different sources. The treatment of these Indians on the Penobscot by the state of Maine is in marked con- trast with that of Massachusetts when this whole region was a part of that commonwealth. Every- thinVr of practical value to them is done for their their protection and beneht. EARLY SETTLEMENTS As near as we can learn this township was a part of the original grant to Bowdoin College. The tirst clearings were made b}' Messrs. Robert Low, Jr. and Robert Herring, Jr., on two lots near Low's bridge and there were raised in 1805 the tirst crops of corn ever raised in town. In 1806 they moved their families here, Robert Low being the first to bring a family here. In Sept. of this year Robert Herring's daughter, Esther, was born. This was the tirst white child born in town. Later in the same year Robert Low's daughter, Polly, was born. During this same year several openings were made in town. Among these were Nathaniel, John and Isaac Bennett, but none stayed through the winter exce])t Low and Herring and three boys, the sons ol the i-)ennetts, who were lell here 12 HISTORICAL. to care for the cow which Capt. J. Bennett had led through from Massachusetts behind his ox team. Later came John Everton and in 1808 Deacon R. Herring brought in his family. From this time religious meetings were held each Sunday. Many others came in until, in 1810, the census showed 65 inhabitants. Capt. John Bennett, as has been stated, was the first to bring a team and cow into town, and was also the first to put up a frame building, which was a barn. The first house in town was built by Barker. This was a log house and stood near the bridge in the village. Mr. Low, the first settler, requires special mention as he was very prominent in town affairs. He was well educated for the time and a very industrious man. He was very prominent in educational lines, teaching the first term of school ever kept in a school house in the town. He lived and died on the lot he first selected which is where Joseph Bearing now lives as near as we can learn. Mr. Low had at least six children, Poll}^ Isaac, Judith, Plummer, Sherman, Sylvina. Polly married Asa Harlow and lived and died in Guilford; Judith became Mrs. Wright and lived in town; the boys sought their fortunes in the west. The houses at the time (about 1813) were mostly log houses as boards were scarce and hard to obtain. The settlers were compelled to go to mSTOUKWT.. 13 Foxcroft to get lumber sawed, and here it was a slow process at Spauldin<^'s mills. The roofs were usualh' covered with long shingles of cedar, the chimneA'S also were built of rough stones and plastered with cla}^ mortar. We find that when there were but few citizens in the town the}' held a town meeting, probably about 1808-9, and passed such rules and regulations as they wished to be governed b3\ These were fully as well obeyed as man}^ of the laws of to-da}^ with heavy penalties attached. This rule continued until 1813 when the settlers were organized into a plantation. Up to the time of incorporation which was in 1816, the town bore the name of Lowstown, but at that time the courts gave it the name of Guilford. The first bo}' born in town after the incorporation was named for the town, and is now living in the person of Guilford Low. ACT OF INCORPORATION In the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixteen, an act to incorporate the town of Guilford. Sec. 1. "27 BRIDGES The first" bridge across the river, against this town, was built b}^ volunteer work and subscrip- tion, and opened to travel about 1821; the towns of Sangerville and Guilford sharing the expense equall3\ Two attempts w^ere made however before a bridge deemed safe for travel was put up, the first being condemned. This was w^here the San- gerville bridge now spans the river. In 1832 this bridge was taken out by freshet, but rebuilt in 1835, and now does good service. The next bridge was built at Guilford village. This was also a subscription bridge, but w^as hardh^ completed when a freshet in 1830 (or 1829) took it out. It w^as soon voted how^ever to raise $600 to rebuild it, Richard Loring taking charge of the work. This stood for about twenty-five years until, in 1855, the present bridge w^as completed. At the time the Guilford village bridge went out in 1829 or 30, it was also voted to raise $600 to build one where the so called Low's bridge now is. This, however, was taken out in 1832, with the above mentioned Sangerville bridge. It was re- built however in 1835 and, taken out in 1856, or thereabouts. In 1857 the present covered bridge was placed there, Sangerville standing one-half the expense. This made the ninth l)ridge built across the Piscataquis at ditierent times, Guilford standing the full expense of three and half of the other six. 28 HISTORICAL. Sangerville Register EARLY SETTLEMENT This township was purchased b}^ Calvin Sanger as long ago as 1800, but we find that the first settler was Mr. Phineas Ames, from New Hampshire, who felled an opening here in 1802, and brought his wife and child here by spotted lines in the fall of 1803, he leading the horse on which his wife rode holding her son, Phineas, Jr., in her arms. He settled near what is now known as Low's corner, about three miles out of the village. Mr. Ames was also the first man to build a saw mill in the town. This was located on Black Stream, in the eastern part of the town. This mill was soon after purchased by Col Sanger. The next settler was J as. Weymouth, who came in 1804, and settled near Center Pond. Mr. Weymouth is said to have been a very powerful man, being able to carr}" twice or three times as much as an ordinary man, which was very con- HISTORICAL. 29 venicnt in those da3^s, as horses and other power were scarce. Jesse Brockwav, who came about two weeks after Mr. Weymouth, was the third settler. He settled on what some call Pond's Hill, and by others is known as Flander's Hill. Mr. Brockw^ay had a dauj^hter born in 1805, the first in town and third in the county. Her name was Hannah, she married a Batcheldor. We are led to believe that Mr. William Jack- son w^as the next to come to town. He settled where Mr. D. A. Jackson now lives, and here raised his family. His son, Asa, lived on this place seventy years; the present occupant is the third in the line. The date of Mr. Jackson's arrival is not known, but it must have been previous to 1806. We learn that he helped make the first clearing, within the limits of what is now Sangerville village. This was made in 1812, where the Carlton mill is now located. Mr. William Farnham was among the next to come. He settled on the south side of Pond's Hill, and soon started into the tanning business, the tirst in the county. We understand tliat he brought the first apple trees into town on his back, and with them planted the first orchard. In 1810 the census gives 126 population, among whom were Kben Stevens, Abel Levi, Solomon and William Oakes, and also Samuel Oakes, Walter 30 HISTORICAL, Leland, Enoch Adams, Eleazer Woodward and the Carletons; many of whom had famihes. P. Ames, the time of whose arrival is mentioned, settled where Fred Douty now lives, near Lane's corner. In 1824 Moses Oilman came to what is now Oilman's corner. INDUSTRIAL ACCOUNT As is stated in another place, the tirst mill in the town was built on what is known as Black Stream, on the upper falls. This was a grist mill put up and operated b}^ Phineas Ames. The mill was crude, though the fall was good, and mills now run well on it, this run slow. In 1810 Col. Sanger exchanged three lots with Mr. Ames for his mill and farm. On the same stream, a little farther down, is another fall, which has been utilized for a saw and shingle mill. In 1817 Isiah Knowlton purchased both these privileges, which have remained in the possession of the family since then. The main stream and source of power for the greater part of Sangerville industries, is the so called Carleton Stream, the outlet of Lake Man- hanock. It has at least five good water privileges. The first one of these is not in use but at one lime a shingle mill stood on this sight. The next privilege was tirst utilized by a com- 36 HISTORICAL. pan}^ of Sangerville's ambitious citizens. The date on which the company began operations here cannot be given definitely, but we do know that it was not a very good investment for those who built it. In about 1865 or so they leased the mill to Mr. Campbell, who later bought the entire stock for $14,000, thus obtaining what cost the original builders about $24,000. In 1885 this mill burned. Mr. Campbell sold out his interest to Messrs. Carr & Co., the present successful operators of the mill, which was constructed on the same locality. Four generations of the Carrs are now connected with it. The next privilege, or third down the stream, is the one first utilized by the Carleton's. It was on this spot that the first clearing was made, and the first mill built in the village. Messrs. Carle- ton and Dudley here built a saw mill. Mr. Carle- ton then bought the whole, put a grist mill in, and sold the saw business to his brother Robert. He then put in a good carding machine. Later Augustus Williams put up a mill on the other side of the same dam, which afterward passed into the hands of the Carleton Woolen Co. The Mr. Carle- ton, who built the mill first mentioned, passed away in 1836, and Joseph Carleton took his place. This also passed into the Carleton Woolen Co., which is now the business name of the firm. The next privilege is occupied by the Camp- HISTORICAL. 37 bell Manufacturing Co. It was utilized by Mr. D. R. Campbell, who now lives in Guilford. He built here a woolen mill, becoming very successful in its operation. He did business under his own name, until his sons became old enough to enter the firm, when the present name was adopted. The fifth is not now in use, but at one time was occupied by Thissell's shingle mill. MILITARY MATTERS The first movements made in this count}^ toward defense was in the organization of militar}^ companies. The military trainings with arms, periodical musters, and other gatherings, which were times of unusual interest. The first company formed in the county was in Sebec, but other towns followed in quick succession; the one here being organized in 1817, when Robert Carlton was chosen captain. Among the others who held this ofiice were Wm. Oakes, Jr., Aaron Morse, Isaiah Knowlton, vSaniuel Rol^ey, John Doiity, Jonathan Roberts and Daniel Spooner. The first companies of this county were in the Fifth Maine Regiment, but in 1S2I were re- organized into the l^^iftli Reginienl, Kirst Brigade, 38 HISTORICAL. Third Division. They were furnished with 24 rounds of powder by the town, to be used at each training and muster until 1825. In this regiment Sangerville furnished her share of the officers. Robert Carlton was made major and colonel; Capt. Oakes became a colonel; and Capt. Morse became major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel. These companies continued to train and muster until 1844, when the state abolished all military companies. There were in this Sangerville company three Revolutionary soldiers, Aaron Rollins, G. Spooner, and Henry Leland. In the war of 1812, and in the Mexican war this town was well represented. In the Rebellion this town furnished more than her quota of men. The following is a list of those who enlisted. This list we have compiled from the Adjutant General's report, but it will be found incomplete: G. G. Ayer, S. B. Ayer, John Augustus, M. C. Bailey, O. CHURCHES The first church built in town was the Baptist Church in Sangerville village. This was put up in about 1834. It was at first a union house, but ver}^ soon the Baptists bought it; however it was used the same as before, preaching continuing 40 HISTORICAL. therein until recently. The Methodists wished to buy it, but a clear title could not be gotten, as the old board of directors who made the trade for it are dead, and but few Baptist's members remain. Now the church stands, little used, but a time honored monument to the zeal and piety of the town fathers. EAST SANGERVILLE UNION CHURCH The next church put up in town was at East Sangerville. It was put up in 1843 by a union of the three denominations, the Universalists, Con- gregationalists and Methodists, who previous to this time worshipped together in the schoolhouse. The first minister to speak in the church was Chas. Hussey, who delivered the dedicatory sermon. He was a Universalist. The first Methodist preacher was Mr. Soule, and Drake the first Con- gregationalist. These three denominations each had a minister, who preached every third Sunday. Later Robert Blacker and Rev. Mr. Barrett were among the ministers. Meetings are still held in the church, but no regular pastor is employed. METHODIST CHURCH The Sangerville Methodist Episcopal Church was formerly a part of the Sangerville, Parkman, Guilford and Greenville circuit, and later of the IllSTOIlICAL. 41 Guilford and Sangerville charge, until 1900, when Sangerville was made a separate appointment. The Campbell Memorial M. E. Church was built in 1896-97; costing over $5,600. Previous to its erection services were held in the old Baptist church, together with the Universalists. The present membership of this society is 47. Since becoming a separate charge the pastors have been Albert Hartt, 1900-02; and Charles W. Wallace since 1902. EDUCATIONAL Concerning the first schools of this town we know but little. The first school was in one of the early settler's houses, but we are unable to learn whose. Some believe it was in either Mr. Weymouth's or Mr. Jackson's. The first school- house built in town was near Lane's Corner, a little southeast of the present site. Lydia New- hall, Messrs. Sawtelle and Hurd were among the teachers here. Soon after this house was built, a second was built about one mile out of the village on the Dexter road. The first schoolhouse built in the village stood where the i)rcscnt one now is, on the hill. U was 42 HISTORIC A.L. a small red schoolhouse, with two rows of seats in the center, wide enough for six, two rows of wall seats for two pupils. It was converted into a dwelling house in 1844, and the present house put up on the same spot. This house was a two room schoolhouse at first, and later enlarged. Among those who taught in the little red schoolhouse we find John Griffin, V. A Sprague, a former resident of Dexter, Chas. Chandler and Sarah Hale. In the second schoolhouse we find Mary Burleigh of Dexter, J. Henry Moulton, Sarah Whitney, Ben- jamin Ames, Chas. Hussey. Appendix EAST SANGERVILLE GRANGE This Grange was organized June 24, 1875, as East Sangerville Grange, No. 177. There were 40 charter members. Algernon Howard was chosen first Master; Wm. Jackson, Overseer; and D. A. Jackson, Lecturer. There are now about 137 members in good standing. This is an energetic and a good working order. It has recently erected a new Grange Hall, which, when com- pleted, will be a fine commodious building. The present officers are David A. Jackson, Master; J. A. Howard, Overseer; and S. A. Knowlton, Lecturer, APPEXDIX. 107 UNIVERSALIST CHURCH SANGERVILLE. Universalist services of worship were held in the Union Church in Sangerville prior to 1846. In that 3^ear Rev. Chas. Hussey was the acting minister. Services were held at more or less, reg- ular intervals subsequent to that date, but not until the spring of 1890 under the pastorate of Rev. R. H. Aldrich was there an}^ permanent organiza- tion undertaken, when the First Universalist Parish was organized with S. M. Gile, moderator; H. C. Ford, clerk; Chester Cob urn, collector and E. W. McKechnie, Treas. The Parish continued jointly with the Methodists to use the Union Church until 1897, when the new Methodist Church having been built and a clear title to the Union Church being unobtainable they decided to build. On May 18, 1897, the lot was purchased, and on June 15, a building committee composed of Rev. R. H. Aldrich, F. H. Carr and H. L. Thomas was elected and the church at once begun. The committee was faithful and painstaking as was Geo. L. Barrows, who acted as the collector of subscription and accountant. The first service was held in the church on Mar. 13, 1898, and it was dedicated June 7 of that year. The church is particularly well appointed and beautiful, a build- 108 APPENDIX. ing Sangerville is proud to call the peer of an}^ countr}^ church in the land. Its building and finalty on March 20, 1904, its being cleared from debt was due to the especial munificence of Moses Carr, the venerable patron Saint of Universalism in the village, and to the loyalty and aid of many other individuals. In 1900 Rev. R. H. Aldrich closed a pastorate of eleven years and was succeeded by Rev. A. M. Bradley who remained until April 1st, 1904. Rev. Harr}^ Enos Rouillard is the present minister. The Parish is in a flourishing condition. J.K.Edes&Sons THE RELIABLE, ONE-PRICE Dry Goods and Cloak M HOUSE M Everything Sold on its Merits.
