Bergen, Antiquarian and Genealogist and his son the late Van Brunt Bergen, which was conducted by the American Art Association on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 5th and 6th, 1918, I purchased a number of manu- scripts, notes, charts and note books compiled by the late Teunis G. He was Minister of the Reformed Church in Bergen in Vriesland, the Netherlands previous to his coming to America in 1705. The Classis of Amsterdam sent him to America to take charge of the Reformed Churches of Kings County. Diffi- culties in church affairs gave him no end of trouble for many years, as part of his charge had called the Rev. Bernardus Freeman. After a long dispute the matter was settled by Antonide6 and Freeman becoming asso- ciate Ministers. Dr. Corwin in the Manual of the Reformed Church IV. Edition says, "Upon his arrival he (Antonides) found this field occupied by Freeman under license from Cornbury (Governor), -who fermented the trohble in the Dutch Churches of Long Island. He was treated with great discourtesy by Cornbury, yet he boldly performed his duties at the risk of arbitrary imprisonment by the Governor. After yielding many points to Freeman for the sake of peace, the troubles partially ceased. The Classis of Amsterdam sustained Antonides and condemned Freeman through all the troubles." Speaking of the Antonides-Freeman Controversy, the American Church History page 127 says (in volume dealing with Reformed Church), "The feeling of the Dutch portion of the community concerning not only the Ministry Act, but any interference of the Governor in church af- fairs, is seen in the expression of the people on Long Island. VThen in 1705 Bernardus Freeman attempted to take charge of the churches on Long Island by license from Governor Cornbury, he was stoutly resisted by the people, and his acts declared null and void.
