His father was for many years the only finisher of home-made cloth for some miles around, and he learned the work of both farm and shop. After his marriage he established as a clothier at Shoreham, Vt., but soon returned to Newport, and in 1826 settled upon the farm where he passed the rest of his days. Without pos- sessing a strong physical organization, he was, almost to the last, in the enjoyment of good health. Like the large proportion of his race he was a devoted Congregationalist. A former pastor writes of him, "he was always regarded by me as one -of the ' Israelites indeed ' in the Church. I expected to find him on the right side of all the questions that might temporarily divide the church. Well do I re- member his prayers, not lacking in fervor, soundly evangelical, and enriched by apt scriptural quotations." Respected and esteemed through a long life of service in his own community, his death was deeply deplored. Issue were : — 488. Carlos-Lyman, b. at Shoreham, Vt., July 2, 1820 ; m. Y., May 27, 1796 ; when in his sixteenth year, having attached himself to the Methodist Church, he formed an alliance with an itinerant preacher of that denomination, for the purpose of a sum- THOMAS BASCOM AND HIS DESCENDANTS. 59 nier tour of exhortation. To supply themselves with the necessary means they diligently worked during the intervals of their travel in the construction of pumps and aqueducts, the companion of youug Bascom being a mechanic by trade. At the end of the season he returned to his father's house with a reputation already established for earnest, sincere piety, and for extraordinary powers in the prayer and exhortation meetings of his church. A year later, in 1812, he travelled seventy or eighty miles to attend the General Conference of the Methodist Church at Chillicothe, meeting there many of the lead- ing preachers of the day. , In 1813 he was licensed to preach, and entered immediately on what proved to be a life of toil and privation in his chosen work. Tn 1818 he took elder's orders, and settled at Louisville, Kentucky. In 1823, after repeated changes in his location, he was elected Chaplain to the House of Representatives at Wash- ington. In June, 1827, he was elected President of Madison College, then just established at Uniontown, Pa., a position which he occupied for a little less than three years, leaving it to accept the general agency of the American Colonization Society. In 1832, he was elected to a professorship in Augusta College, and retained his connection with that institution for a period of ten years. In 1837, he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, and in 1845 that of LL.D. In 1842 he removed to Lexington, Ky., and assumed the presidency of Transylvania University. This he resigned in 1849, and the year after was elected and consecrated Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Providence, however, decreed that his earthly work was over, and on the 8th of September of that year, having presided as Bishop but at one Conference, he passed to his reward. Bishop Bascom was a man of remarkable powers. Without early education, influence or personal ambition, by a mental activity that found no rest till the secrets of science and theology had been mas- tered, by natural oratorical ability of a most startling and persuasive description, and by a piety as earnest and sincere as it was abiding, he attained a reputation as a scholar, preacher and Christian almost unrivalled in his generation. Joseph Bascom, youngest son of Thomas, 3d, b. at North- ampton, Mass., Jan. 20, 1*708-9 ; m. Aug. 3, 1737, at Deerfield, Mass., Hannah Rider. He is styled in deeds of that period " a joyner," and early settled at Deerfield. His three elder children were there born, and as in Oct. 1741, he purchased a farm in Cold-Spring, on the east- ern side of the Connecticut River (now called Belchertown), it is pro- bable he removed there, for I have found in town records of Deerfield no further account of him. His stay in Cold-Spring, however, was of but short duration, for in Oct. 1747, he sold his farm there, at that time living in Northampton. He, with his wife, was dismissed by the THOMAS BASCOM AND HIS DESCENDANTS. 65 Church at N., June 12, 1763, to the Church at Greenfield, where it is supposed he had removed in or about the year 1760, and where he died Sept. 11, 1764. On receiving the " Bascom Genealogy," by E. D. Harris, and care- fully perusing it, I concluded to correct some mistakes in, aDd add some- thing to, the history of our grandfather, — give the families of our sisters in full, include som i important omissions, and also give the marriages and deaths in our brother's families, since the record was sent Mr. Harris, bringing it up to 1871. /#^/#/Mj^/&^7^ Wright's 40 vis. I also decided to include our aunt's families, as none of them were given in full except Aunt Cutts'. Thus we should have in the sup- plement all of our cousins that were not in the/oook. Additions to the de- scendants ot some of the uncle's families have also been inserted, and as our grandfather lived more than 30 years at my father's, I have placed our family next to him. All the others are arranged in the order of theL births. I designed to re print nothing that was in the book, and prepared the supplement accordingly, referring to numbers in the book. Inquiries were repeatedly made, asking where the book could be obtained. But learniug from Mr. Harris, that no more copies were to be had, I changed my plan somewhat, repeating names and dates to make it intelligible, to those who had not the book, but still retained references to the numbers, for the convenience of those who had it. Hoping it will interest those who receive it, as much as it has me while preparing it, I now send it forth for your perusal. Clarinda (Bascom) Safford. Kalamazoo, Michigan, Sept 27, 1871. We learn from the " Genealogy," that our ancestor, Thomas Bascom, came to this country, probably from England, about 1634, when he was at Dorchester, Mass. Our grandfather said his ancestors came from England a few years after the first settlers, and that there were three brothers of them. — He was in the battle of Saratoga, as a volunteer soldier from Northfield, Mass, actively engaged until its close. While an apprentice to a clothier, and during a season of poor health, he learned to weave, and when too old for farm work, (which was his occupation in Vermont,) he asked for a loom for exercise, and continued to weave until he was nearly eighty years old — he was never willing to be idle. He took a deep interest in both Home and Foreign Missions, said he could now see how the Prophecies were to be fulfilled and the Gospsl sent to all natious. When the Missionary Herald came it was read first to him. He was so strictly temperate that when past ninety years old, he objected to a second pint of gin prescribed by his phy- sician for dropsy in the chest, saying he reared he should learn to like it. — In 1829, he headed the family list of names for the first temperance society formed in the town. When Lucinda his youngest daughter, was married in 1818, he had ninety-nine living descendants. When past ninety, his old- est grand-child, Mrs, Roselinda (Bascom) Murray, [407] visited him with her oldest son, (Orson Murray,) and his first child. He seemed quite pleased with the boy, and fondly caressing him, said he never expected to live to see the fifth generation. Not long before his death, his daughter, Rebecca, (Mrs. Wright,) visited him ; he had not seen her for a long time, and she tried in vain to bring to his mind the remembrance of his ever hav- ing had such a daughter. Grandmother then asked him if he knew who Jesus Christ was ? " Oh, yes I" he exclaimed, " he is my Redeemer/, TEOMAS BASCOM ANE HIS DESCENDANTS. [SUPPLEMENT.] 3 387.
