[Each subdivision is arranged alphabetically. Upon this lot the first St. Philip's Church was erected about 1683. But there were probably interments made on this lot even before the first church was erected, for after the earthquake of 1886, while some workmen were repairing the foundations of the present church, they discovered a cedar coffin, with the date 1678 and the initials J. O. B. studded on the lid with brass tacks. In 1711 a new church was commenced upon the site occupied by the present St. Philip's, and this church having been completed and occupied by the year 1 727, the old church was in this latter year taken down, but the lot continued to be used as a burying-ground. The Act for establishing St. Michael's Parish was passed June 14, 1 75 1 , and the church was commenced in 1 752, upon the site of the first St. Philip's. I wish to express my appreciation of the assistance given by Mr. A. S. Salley, Jr., in the publication of this book, and to thank all who have helped with it in any way, or have shown a kindly interest in my work. C.J. Charleston, S. C, September 1 , 1 906. JURIST. ORATOR. STATESMAN. PATRIOT. Future times will hardly know how great a life This simple stone commemorates, — The tradition of his Eloquence, his Wisdom and Wit may fade; But he lived for ends more durable than fame. His eloquence was the protection of the poor and wronged His Learning illuminated the principles of Law — In the admiration of his Peers, In the respect of his People In the affection of his Family, His was the highest place; The just meed Of his kindness and forbearance. His dignity and simplicity His brilliant Genius and his unwearied industry, Unawed by Opinion. Unseduced by Flattery Undismayed by disaster. He confronted Life with antique Courage And Death with Christian Hope. In the great Civil War He withstood his People for his Country. But his People did homage to the Man Who held his conscience higher than their praise; And his Country Heaped her honours on the grave of the Patriot, To whom, living. His own righteous self-respect sufficed. Alike for Motive and Reward. St. Michael's Churchyard I99 "Nothing is here for tears, nothing to wail Or Knock the breast, no weakness, no contempt. Recommendations from the most respectable sources of the high attainments of this lady induced the Trustees of the Academies established by the Society to select her as the Principal of the Female department. Urged by a pious sense of filial duty To contribute to the comfort of an aged mother she sought the responsible office, and in a short time fulfilled the hopes which her reputation had authorised. To an energy not inconsistent with the character of the softer sex She added an urbanity, which tempered without impairing her discipline. The interesting objects of her care acknowledged the justness of her decisions whilst they were grateful for the mildness with which these were enforced. Zealous and cheerful in the discharge of her duties, she won the studious application of her admiring pupils, whose innocent tears consecrate the memory of her Virtues, and afford the best illustration of her eminent worth.
