M^ going on along journej, always decide before starting, f*- which route you will take, where you will stop off, what objects of special interest you wish particularly to see, and especially ascertain what the expenses will be. II. |0 not spend your money lavishly and foolishly, simply because you have a holiday and are away from home. Be careful not to pay two or three prices for what you would scarcely notice at home. A few dollars saved will take you on a longer journey. III. LWAYS sfart in time. Endeavor to be ten or fifteen minutes ahead of time ;. you will thus secure better seats — the middle seats of cars are considered the easiest for riding. Avoid getting into a hurry and excitement or, nine times out of ten, you will make yourself ridicu- lous, and become an object of merriment to many who may notice your indiscreet movements. IV. '*wyEpatie7it. Do not expect the ticket agents, conductors '^ or other officials to do obeisance to you, in preference to everybody else : you may be of great importance to CENTENNIAL GUIDE yourself, but there are others traveling who are equallv deserving the attention of railway officials, and you must learn to take your turn. V. E polite. Do not leave all your good manners at home. Treat all railway officials with politeness ; the con- ductors and brakesmen of the trains Avill do much for your comfort, if in their power. They have a trying position. As a rule they are kindly disposed, and if properly addressed, readily comply with reasonable requests. VI. '^^AVE your ticket ready when called for; never put it -fU in the bottom of your satchel, and expect the con- ductor to wait until you unpack and repack before handing it to him. Conductors having a full train are oftentimes much hurried to collect tickets between stations. VII. |0 not insist upon a conductor stopping to give you information when he is collecting tickets ; he will attend to your inquiries when he has more time. VIII. '^f F you are going to Philadelphia, read this Guide care- 7*- fully, and you will no doubt gain all the information in re.uard to the city, that you may need. IX. |0 not expose your money when traveling; and, when in the city, do not carry more about your person than you will need for the day. TO PHILADELPHIA. X. EPOSIT your money with the cashier at the hotel w here you are stopping, or, with a reliable Banker. » XI. «^iSE careful not to make change for strangers, or cash '^ checks, or loan money to the sharpers who watch their opportunity to swindle the thoughtless : if you do not carry more money with you than you need for the day, you will have no difficulty in refusing all such claims. XII. jjhlCK-POCKETS and robbers often ask the time of day It in order to seize your watch ; look out for such cases, especially after dark. XIII. «5^EEP out of crowds. If you find yourself jammed in '*p' a full street car, keep an eye to your watch and pocket ; it is in getting on and off cars, and in crowds, that pick-pockets most frequently practice their tricks. XIV. <^EEP out of dark and unfrequented streets after night, ^ in large cities, and do not be allured by smooth tongued men or women to visit places of amusement, or other resorts that are not known to be safe. Consult the Centennial Guide for the best places. XV. fXtEVER write or cut your name on any wall or fence, or (*■* in any way deface places that you visit. In many places a register is kept for the names of all ladies and CENTENNIAL (4UIDE gentlemen who ma}' wish to record them : if no such record ot wa XYI. ^ET apart one or two days for your shopping. Do not attempt siglit-seeing and shopping at the same time ; or you will not accomplish either satisfactorily. XVII. afF you make many purchases, do not carry with yoa f^ all you buy : the merchants of whom you purchase will send the articles to your room at the hotel. It is a good plan to have a card with your name and the hotel, or the street and number of the residence where you are stopping, printed or written distinctly upon it — if it is a hotel, give the number of your room — hand one of these cards to the clerk of whom you buy, and there can be no mistake about the goods being sent to the proper address. XVIII. HEN you return to the hotel, examine all the articles \ sent, to be sure no mistake has occurred. It is well to name an hour when you expect the goods to be delivered. XIX. JaO not leave your shopping until the last thing yon ^ have to do, and then get into a hurry and excitement about the time you are starting, and probably lose or break some valuable article, for want of time to pack ; attend to business first, and then pleasure. If your shopping is done in time, you can pack your purchases at leisure, in the morning and ev*^ning, before or after sight-seeing. TO PHILADELPniA. XX. j||fAKE a list of all you want to purchase before starting <^^ and then check off each item as you buy it ; in this way you will not forget anything. If you buy a bill of any considerable amount get a bill and receipt. Always take a card of the person of whom you purchase anything; this will enable you to find the place again, or to direct j'our friends at home where to go. XXI. •^iSuY your railroad tickets before starting. You had ^^ better buy your tickets before leaving the hotel, you will find a list of the various ticket offices advertised in this Guide; this will avoid the necessity of handling your money at the station, and prevent delay if others are crowding around the ticket office. Many nice things are wanted: — good quality, neat styles, and the best for the money. Remember that the lowest priced article is not always the cheapest, but that which gives the most service in all respects for the money. If you buy of a reliable firm, they will not misrepresent their goods, nor will they sell at a higher price to the ignorant and inexperienced buyer, than to those better informed. Unreliable and unscrupulous dealers, who never expect to see you again, and who have no regard for truth or honesty, will sell you, if possible, the poorest article at the highest price. Your safeguard against these dealers is to buy only where the reputation of the firm is such as to guarantee fair dealing. The merchants advertising in this Guide are known to the Publisher and to the public generally, as gentlemen of large experience, having an extensive stock of mer- chandise on sale. Buyers will find it to their interest to patronize them. If you are spending only one day in the city, and do not take rooms at a hotel, your better plan will be to have all your purchases sent to one place, and so far as possi- ble, packed in one package or box. In case you do this, select a place nearest the street cars you wish to take upon leaving the city. Before ordering goods sent to any store, leave your name and address, and also ascertain whether or not they will be willing to receive the pack- ages; the party of whom you make the largest purchases should more properly be selected. Philadelphia merchants are proverbial for politeness, fair dealing, and a careful compliance with the wishes of their customers. 44 CENTENNIAL GUIDE When the weather is inclement, and sight-seeing and walking out of doors are unpleasant, the time may be very pleasantly spent in visiting those places of interest which will furnish a day, or at least several hours of instructive in-door entertainment. There are many things of great interest and ingenuity in the Institutions, Museums, Cabinets, &c., of the city, which merit, and very well reward a careful examination. A half-day thus spent in one such place will confer more lasting good and pleasure, than whole days of hurried and imperfect inspection of many different places. There are numerous resorts of this kind in all parts of the city, easy of access from all the principal hotels: prominent among these are the ACADEMY OF NATURAL SCIENCES, Cor. Broad St. and Sansom, open on Tuesdays and Thursdays ; ad- mission, 10 cents. None can fail to be interested in the products of scientific research and skill here exhibited. THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS, on Broad Streefabove Arch, has many attractions, and is well worthy of a pro- longed visit, especially from those who take more delight in the Beautiful. Interesting entertainments are given at the BLIND ASYLUM, Twenty-second and Race Sts. every Wednesday afternoon. INSTITUTION for the Instruction of the DEAF AND DUMB, corner Broad and Prime Streets. Entertainments every Thursday afternoon, from September to July. Wood's Museum, corner 9th and Arch Sts., and other \ such institutions, the Art Galleries, the Book Stores, the TO PHILADELPHIA. 45 Reading Rooms and the Libraries, will also afford abundant diversion for rainy days -u-ith little inconvenience or exposure to the weather. Shopping may often, with advantage, be attended to, on rainy days, when it does not require much walking, as business is then generally dull, merchants are more willing to sell at accommodating prices. IB if Hi f 11 ivwiies, Too great care cannot be exercised in deciding how to spend the evenings. By all means avoid all places of questionable amuse- ment. As you value your life, be not tempted with the desire to see *'only once" things revolting to the moral sense; seek improvement as well as pleasure; useful^ rather than harmful^ knowledge. There are not wanting numerous places of resort suited to refine and elevate, as well as gratify every taste and degree of culture. Among the most beneficial and interesting of such entertainments, are the courses of lectures delivered during the winter season, upon literary and scientific subjects, at the Franklin Institute, and the Academy of Music ; others otherwise inclined cannot fail to find wholesome amusement in select readings, concerts, the higher class of operas, &c.; &c. The Public Ledger and other daily papers give full notices, in the proper columns, of the places and character of the entertainments for the evenings. 46 CENTENNIAL GUIDE ^i|i|iiii f iMl^feii In tii Oltj. I was particularly gratified however, to find there what constitute essential factors 'in the ac- quirement of knowledge— home intluences and religious culture. In your Home and School I should consider a vouth under the very best mental and moral training. Yours always, B. H. HUNT. 48 CENTENNIAL GUIDE admiU-gd ft©©.
