TATAT A WT is our intention to give in a convenient form, the M> Gunning Laws of the United States and Canada. While necessarily a summary, this book contains the gist of all laws in force, affecting seasons, limitations as to number, transportation, and non-resident requirements. To secure brevity, catch or Kii^i, are used for the more extended terms of the Statute; i. e., "Catch, kill destroy, injure or pursue with such intent," etc. Where no close season is specified, there is none. Transportation, sale or possession of game at any time when it is unlawful to kill such game, is unlawful, except that various States allow from four days to three weeks, for the sale of game, after the expiration of the open season for killing. Night shooting, and shooting of birds other than game birds and birds of prey, is forbidden. Nests and eggs of all birds (except of prey) are always protected. CompllmentB^of THB UNION MEKTALLIO OARTRIDQB OO. 4 GAME LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA* ALABAMA. Huntings or Sliootinar on Sunday- Is Forbidden. Hunting or shooting on Sunday is forbidden. Birds BTot Protected. Song and insectivorous birds, their nests and eggs, are protected, and all wild birds, except as follows: English or European house sparrow, kingfisher, cooper's hawk, sharp-skinned hawk, duck hawk, pigeon hawk, great horned owl, barred owl, green heron and night heron are not included among the birds protected. Game Birds. It is unlawful to kill or have in possession, any wild tur- key, pheasant, grouse, quail, partridge, woodcock, prai- rie chicken, English, Mongolian or Chinese pheasant, except from November 15 to March i, inclusive; pro- vided, that it shall be unlawful to hunt or kill any Mon- golian, English or Chinese pheasant for a period of five years from the date of the approval of this act (1899); and provided, further, that it shall be lawful to kill wild turkey during the month of February of each and every year in addition to the time above specified. Deer. It is unlawful to kill, have in possession any deer or fawn, except during the months of September, October, November and December in each year; and it is unlaw- ful to at any time kill or capture any deer in the waters of any stream, ponds or lakes within the State. CJomplIments of THE UNION MDT1.LLI0 OARTBIDGB CO. 5 6 ALABAMA— ARIZONA Sale, - It is unlawful to kill or have in possession any deer or or entrap any deer, fawn, wild turkey, pheasant, grouse, quail, partridge, woodcock or squirrel for the purpose of selling same. Transportation. No person, company or corporation, or the agent thereof, shall, at any time, catch, kill or have in posses- sion any of the birds or game mammals of this State, the killing of which is prohibited, with intent to ship or remove the same beyond the limits of this State. Possession. Possession of the game birds and game mammals herein mentioned is permitted for a period of fifteen days after the time limited for killing the same has ex- pired. Metbod of Hnntingr. It is unlawful to kill any of the game birds, song birds or game mammals, in any other manner than by shooting them with a gun; and it is upxlawful to use any trap, net, artificial light, battery, or other deception or contrivance whatever. Squirrels. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any black, gray or fox squirrel, except from July i to February i, inclusive. Counties Exempt. Many counties are exempt from the provisions of the law. ARIZONA. Bobwlilte, Partridsre* Q,nail, Grouse, "Wild Turkey, Wild Duck, Snipe or Rail. Every person who, in the Territory of Arizona, between March i and October 15, shall hunt, pursue, kill or de- stroy, or have in possession, except for purpose of prop- agation, any quail, bob white, grouse, partridge or wild Compllmenta of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. ARIZONA 7 turkey, or any kind of wild duck, snipe or rail, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, excepting that any person may himt brant, duck or goose between October i and April I. It is also unlawful to net, snare or trap any of them, or to expose them for sale, if netted, trapped or snared. It is also a misdemeanor to use a gun of larger calibre than No. lo gauge in shooting any of the above, or to trespass upon the enclosed or cultivated ground or fields of private property, or where signs are displayed for- bidding such shooting, without having obtained permit from the owner of the land. It is also a misdemeanor to destroy or disturb the nests or eggs of any of the abore mentioned birds. It is a misdemeanor to kill or hunt any doves between March i and June i. Deer, Camel, Antelope, ESllc, Slteep mnd Ooata. It is a misdemeanor to hunt or kill any male deer, ante- lope or buck between December 15 and August i of the year following. It is also unlawful at any time to hunt or kill any camels, goats, female deer, female antelope, or any elk, mountain sheep, doe or spotted fawn, except that bucks may be killed for camp or domestic purposes from October i to February i. Birds. It is unlawful to take, kill or destroy any bird mentioned in this Act, unless the carcass is preserved or sold for food. It is a misdemeanor to sell or offer for sale the head or meat of any deer, elk, antelope, mountain sheep, mountain goat, or wild turkey. Ph*M»iat, Praarle Chicken, Bob HHhite. It is a misdemeanor to hunt, pursue, or have in posses- sion, except for purposes of propagation, any of these birds within the next five years. It is unlawful to have in possession or to girt away, or offer for sale, any protected animals mentioned in this section, during the closed seasons specified, or receive same for transportation during close seasons. Bovintle*. Each County Board of Supervisors shall pay as rewards for their destruction, the following bounties: Lobos or timber wolves, $5.00 each; mountain lions, pumas, pan- thers, $20.00 each; bears, $10.00 each. Sex. It is a misdemeanor to buy, sell, or have in possession the carcass or hide of any deer or antelope from which the evidence of sex has been removed. Treapaas. It is a misdemeanor for any person to shoot game birds mentioned herein upon enclosed or cultivated ground or field which is private property, or where signs are dis- played forbidding such shooting without permission first obtained from the owner or person in possession of such grounds. ARKANSAS. Deer. It is unlawful to kill, catch or pursue any wild buck, deer or fawn between February i and August i. The chasing with dogs or hounds is forbidden in Mississippi, Crit- tenden, Cross, Poinsett and St Francis counties. In these counties shooting after sundown, with intent to kill, injure or frighten any aquatic fowls, on the lakes or waters, is also forbidden. Close Seaaems. Wild turkey between May i and September i; quail or Virginia partridge, March i and October i. Prairie Ckielceita. Qose season: February i to September i following. It is unlawful to export game from this State until April, 1901. liocal Listyvu, Yell County — Partridges, quail, March 15 to September IS; wild turkey, April 15 to August 15. Lafayette, Miller and Desha Counties — Camping and fire-hunting forbidden. Xem-realfllents. Non-resident tax for hunting, $10. CALIFORNIA. General Game Liair. Every person who between the first day of March and the first day of October in each year, shall hunt, pursue, take, kill or destroy, or have in his possession, any valley quail, bobwhite, partridge or any kind of wild duck or rail; every person who, between the fifteenth day of Feb- ruary and the first day of September in each year, shall hunt, pursue, take, kill or destroy, or have in his pos- session any mountain quail or grouse; every person who, between the fifteenth day of February and the fifteenth day of July in each year, shall hunt, pursue, take, kill or destroy, or have in his possession any dove or doves; every person who shall take, gather or destroy the eggs or nest of any quail, bobwhite, partridge, pheasant, grouse, dove, robin, or any kind of wild duck or rail; every person who shall at any time hunt, shoot, shoot at, take, kill or destroy, buy, sell, give away, or have in his possession, except for the purpose of propagation, or for educational or scientific purposes, any English skylark, robin, canary, humming-bird, thrush or mocking-bird, or any part of the skin, skins, or plumage thereof, or who shall rob the nests, or take or destroy, or offer for sale, the eggs of any of the said birds; every person who, be- fore the first day of March, 1899, shall hunt, pursue, take, kill or destroy, or have in his possession, any pheasant; Ootnpllments of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. 10 CALIFORNIA every cold-storage company, person keeping a cold- storage warehouse, tavern or hotel keeper, restaurant or eadng-house keeper, marketman, or other person, who shall buy, sell, expose or offer for sale, or give away, or have in his possession any quail, bobwhite, partridge, robin, grouse, dove, pheasant, wild duck, or rail, during the time it shall be unlawful to kill such birds; every person who shall hunt, pursue, take, kill, or have in his possession, or destroy any male deer between the fif- teenth day of October and the fifteenth day of July of the following year; every person who shall at any time hunt, pursue, take, kill or destroy, or have in his pos- session, any female deer, or spotted fawn, or any ante- lope, elk, or mountain sheep; every person who shall at any time buy, sell, or offer for sale, the hide or meat of any deer, elk, antelope, or mountain sheep; every person who shall buy, sell, offer or expose for sale, transport or carry, or have in his possession the skin, hide or pelt of any deer, from which the evidence of sex has been re- moved, is guilty of a misdemeanor; provided, however, that the right of possession for the purpose of propaga- tion shall first be obtained by a permit, in writing, from the Board of Fish Commissioners of the State of Cali- fornia. It is unlawful to use a shotgun of larger calibre than No. 10 gauge. It is unlawful to shoot upon any enclosed or cultivated grounds which are private property, where signs are dis- played forbidding shooting. Tvmmnp^irtatl^n. CALIFORNIA-COLORADO 11 ridge, pheasant, grouse, prairie chicken, dove or wild duck, except for the purposes of propagation, shall be guilty of misdemeanor. COLORADO. General ReipUatlon*. It is unlawful to at any time or in any manner hunt or kill any bison, buffalo, elk, deer, antelope, mountain sheep or beaver, or any of the following wild birds, viz.: Turkey, prairie chicken, sage chicken, grouse, quail, pheasant, partridge, ptarmigan, duck, goose, brant, swan, waterfowl, pigeon, dove, snipe or curlew; or to sell, offer for sale or have the same in possession, except as per- mitted by this act; Provided, the prohibition in this sec- tion as to beaver shall not extend to such beaver as inter- fere with the operation or maintenance of any canal, ditch or lawful dam. Hunting: on Land of Another. No person shall shoot from a public highway at game, or hunt game in any enclosure not public land, without the consent of the owner or person in charge of the same, or hunt in any park or preserve licensed under this act without the consent of the proprietor or person in charge of the same. Sex. No person shall have in possession or transport the carcass of any game quadruped or any considerable por- tion of such carcass unless the same has thereon the natural evidence of its sex sufficient to enable such sex to be readily determined by ordinary inspection. Baiting Tvlth Game. It shall be unlawful to use any wild game mentioned in this act for the purpose of baiting any trap. Deer, Antelope. Open season for deer having horns and antelopes having horns is from August 15 to November 5. "Water Fowl. Open season for wild ducks, geese, snipes, curlews, brants, swans, cranes and water fowls is from Septem- ber I to April 15, except in altitudes exceeding 7,000 feet above sea level, where the open season shall begin Sep- tember 15. Wilcl Piireens, Doves. Open season for wild pigeons and doves is from July 15 to September 30. Metbod of Hunting. No game shall be hunted or killed in the night, nor with a steel or hard pointed bullet, nor with any weapon other than an ordinary shoulder gun or pistol. Pro- vided, That dogs, blinds, sinks and decoys may be used for hunting birds, and that the provisions of this section in relation to game quadrupeds shall not apply to those in parks licensed for the keeping and propagation of the same. £^z:port of Game requlreB permit. No railroad company, express company, or other public carrier, nor any agent, shall receive or store for trans- portation, or transport into, or within this State tny game, except when there is attached thereto a proper and valid certificate or permit signed by the commis- sioner, authorizing transportation. COLORA.DO— CONNECTICUT 13 for killing the same, except as in this act otherwise pro- vided. (Commissioner may give permit to hold game for 90 days.) Amuvuntm, The right given by this section to take or kill game is limited to food purposes, and to fifty ducks and twenty- five other birds, for each person in any one calendar day, and no person shall take, kill or have in possession in any one season more than one elk, and one deer and one antelope; or, instead of one deer and one antelope, he may have either two deer or two antelope. Nor shall any person have in possession at any one time more than one hundred ducks and fifty other birds. CONNECTICUT. 'W«odeoe1c, avail, Rwfled Grouse (ealled Partrldare), Gray Squirrel. It is unlawful to kill or have in possession any of tkc above between December i and October i of the follow- ing year, or for any person or persons to destroy or dii- turb eggs or nests of these birds. Rvfled GrevB*. '- No person shall kill more than 5 of these birds in one day, or 36 in one year. Hare, Rabbit*. It is unlawful to kill any hare or rabbit between Decem- ber 15 and October 15. Use of ferrets on premises of an- other forbidden. Rail, Sora. It is unlawful to kill any sora (called rail) in the counties of Litchfield, Fairfield and New Haven between Jan- uary I and August 20, and in all other counties between January i and September i. It is unlawful, and punishable by fine, to kill any wild duck, brant or goose in May, June, July or August, or to kill any of them except with an ordinary shoulder gun, or to shoot at any such fowl from a vessel propelled by steam or sails, or from any boat or structure attached thereto. Exportation. It is unlawful to kill at any time any ruffed grouse, wood- cock or quail, for the purpose of conveying same beyond the limits of the State, or to convey same beyond said limits. Monarollan Pbeaaant. Killing forbidden until October i, 1900. De«r. The killing of deer is prohibited until October i, I903« DELAWARE. Non-residents. It is unlawful for any non-resident to hunt or kill any quail, grouse, partridge, woodcock, rabbit or hare, orto- lan, rail or reed bird without having a license from the Delaware Game Protective Association, Wilmington, Del. License fee for first year $5.00 and $2.00 per year thereafter, Exportation. It is unlawful for any one to ship or carry out of the State any partridge, quail, robin, woodcock or wild rabbit, dead or alive, for sale or for any other purpose, and it is unlawful for non-residents to carry out of the State, or from one county to another in the State, any Wilson or English snipe, quail, robin, woodcock, wild rabbit or any of these, dead or alive. It is unlawful to kill, expose for sale, or have in posses- sion, any partridge, otherwise quail, between February I and November i; woodcock, between January 15 and July is; prairie chicken, otherwise pinnated grouse, be- tween February i and September i ; ruffed grouse, other- wise known as pheasant, between December 26 and November i, except the English ring neck pheasant, or other pheasants of foreign origin; wild turkey, between December 26 and November i ; rabbit except the species known as the English rabbit or squirrel, between Feb- ruary I and November i; any snipe or plover, between May I and September i; any wild duck, wild goose or brant, between May i and September i; or any water rail or ortolan, reed bird or rice bird or marsh black- bird, between February i and August 20, or to shoot at or kill the same except on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, between August 21 and February i. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any wild duck, wild goose, brant, or wild bird in the night time; nor kill or shoot at same with any other firearm, gun, or device than such as are habitually raised at arm's length and fired from the shoulder. ■nnday. It is unlawful to hunt on Sunday. FLORIDA. D*er. It is unlawful for any person or persons, except upon their own enclosed premises, to hunt or kill any wild deer except during the months of October, November, December and January of each year. The sale of wild deer or any part thereof is forbidden. Until January I, 1905, it shall be unlawful for any person to kill more than five deer during any one year. Fire-hunting pro- hibited; also the use of artificial light. Wild Turlcer* Quail, Partrldgre. It is unlawful for any person to hunt or kill, except on his own enclosed premises, any wild turkey, quail or partridge, except from November i to March i of any year. FLORIDA— GEORGIA 17 six turkeys and no more than fifty quail in any one day, and it is unlawful to sell, expose for sale or have in possession any wild turkey, quail or partridge except from November i to March i. No person shall en- trap quail, except on his own enclosed premises. Transportation. Shipment of game animals or birds outside the limits of the county in which they were killed is prohibited, ex- cept that hunting parties may take their own game home with them in the State, but not for sale. License. Non-residents wishing to hunt in any county in this State shall first obtain a license from the clerk of the circuit court of the county in which he wishes to hunt, said license fee being $io. This license is not trant- ferable, and permits the licensee to hunt only as pro- vided for in this act. other Dirda. It is unlawful to kill for sale or commercial purposes any birds of plume, viz.: crane, heron, curlew, ibis or egret. QEORQIA. Game Birds, Insectivorous or Songr Birds, Doves. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any wild turkey, pheasant, partridge, quail or any insectivorous or singing bird, except English sparrows, crows, larks, rice birds, night hawks, wheat birds and doves, between March 15 and November i ; or to hunt or kill any dove between March IS and August 15. Nests. It is unlawful for any person to remove from the nests or destroy the eggs of any of the birds protected, during the periods they are so protected. It is unlawful to sell, oflfer for sale, or have in possession any game bird or animal, or any part of either, whether dead or alive, during the periods in which they are pro- tected. IDAHO. Moose, Caribou. It is unlawful to kill or destroy any moose or caribou at any time during the period of five years from and after the passage of this act (1899). Mountain Sheep, Mountain Goat, Deer, Antelope. It is unlawful to kill, or destroy any deer, antelope, mountain sheep or mountain goat, between January i and September i of each year; or to take more than four of any such animals during the time they may lawfully be killed in any one year. It is unlawful to kill or destroy an elk, except between September i and December i of any year, or to take more than two elk between the dates mentioned. Bea-rer. It is unlawful to kill or trap beaver or kitten beaver for a period of five years from and after the approval of this act (1899). Sale. It is unlawful to buy or sell the hides of any of the animals mentioned in any of the preceding sections. Dos». It is unlawful to kill, trap or destroy any partridge, pheasant, grouse, prairie chicken, sage hen or fool hen except between August 15 and December i of each year: Provided, That no Mongolian pheasant shall be killed, ensnared, trapped or destroyed for a period of three years after the passage of this act (1899). "Water Fowl. It is unlawful to kill or destroy any wild duck, goose or swan between March i and August 15 of each year. Transportation. It is unlawful for any railway, express company, or other public carrier, or any of their agents to receive or have in their possession for transportation any of the animals or birds, protected by the laws of this State, or to trans- port the same after the passage of this act; except that nothing in this act shall prevent shipping or transport- ing mounted heads or stuffed birds or animals to any point within the State, provided that such birds or animals were lawfully killed. ILLINOIS, Deer, Wild Turkey, Grouse, Prairie Glilcken, Pheaa. ant, Q,nall, Woodcock or Bloamlng Dove. It is unlawful to kill or destroy any wild buck, doe or fawn, or wild turkey, between January 15 and September I of any year; or any pinnated or ruffed grouse, prairie chicken, pheasant or partridge, between October i and August 31 of the succeeding year; or any quail between December 20 and November i of the succeeding year; or any woodcock or mourning dove between December I and September i of the succeeding year. It is unlawful to kill or destroy any grey, red, fox or black squirrel between December 15 and September i of each succeeding year; or any jack snipe, Wilson's snipe, sand snipe or any kind of snipe, or any golden plover, upland plover, yellow legged plover or any other kind of plover between April 25 and September i of each succeeding year. "Water Fowl. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any wild goose, duck, brant or other water fowl at any time between April 15 and September i of any year; or to hunt or kill any wild goose, brant, duck, rail or other water fowl between sunset of any day and sunrise of the next succeeding day; or to hunt water fowl from any fixed or artificial ambush beyond a natural covering of reeds, canes, flags, wild rice or other vegetation above the water of any lake, river, bay or inlet or other water course. The use of any small boat, sink-box or other device for the pur- pose of concealment, or of any steamboat or sailboat in hunting wild fowl is forbidden, also any gun other than a common shoulder gun; and provided, that the animals, fowls and birds mentioned in the following section shall not be killed for a period of five years from and after the taking effect of this act. It is unlawful, for a period of five years from and after the passing of this act (1899) to injure, take, kill, ex- pose or offer for sale or have in possession, except for breeding purposes, any wild buck, doe or fawn, ring- neck, Mongolian pheasant, green Japanese pheasant, English pheasant, copper pheasant or Scholmeringom, Trogapan pheasant, silver pheasant or golden pheasant, any Cacubis, chucker partridge, sand grouse or black India partridge. "Wild Bird». It is unlawful to kill any wild bird other than a game bird, English sparrow, crow, crow-blackbird or chicken Compllmenta of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE OO. IliLINOIS 21 hawk, or to purchase, offer or expose for sale any such wild bird after it has been killed or caught: Provided, that nothing in this section shall be construed to prevent the owner or occupant of lands from destroying any of such birds when deemed necessary for the protection of fruits or property. For the purposes of this act the fol- lowing only are considered game birds: Swans, geese, brant, river and sea ducks, rails, coots, mud-hens and gallinules, shore birds, plovers, surf birds, snipe, wood- cock, sand-pipers, tattlers and curlews, wild turkeys, grouse, prairie chickens, pheasants, partridges, quails and mourning doves. Ne8t« of 'Wild Birds. It is unlawful within the State of Illinois to take or need- lessly destroy, or have in possession, the nest or the eggs of any wild game birds; provided, this act shall not apply to any person holding a certificate giving the right to take birds, and their nests and eggs, for scien- tific purposes. Lloexuie. ■ I ''\r.'/^ No person not a resident of the State of Illinois shall at any time hunt or kill, with gun, any of the wild ani- mals, fowls or birds that are protected, without first hav- ing procured a license. Non-resident License. Non-residents shall not hunt any of the wild animals, fowls or birds that are protected during any part of the year, without first obtaining license, license fee being $io, and 50 cents fee to Secretary of State, and such licensee is authorized to take from the State twenty-five birds of all kinds killed by himself, and such license shall be void after the ist day of June next succeeding its issuance. HnntinsT on Lands of Anotber. It is unlawful to hunt with gun, dog or net within or up- on the land of another without first obtaining permis- sion so to do. It is unlawful to sell, buy or have in possession during the time when netting or trapping is forbidden, any ani- mals or birds that have been netted or trapped in viola- tion of these Acts. It is also unlawful to sell or expose for sale at any time, or transport out of the State for any purpose, or in the State for purposes of sale, any of the following animals killed or entrapped in this State: Pinnated grouse, prairie chicken, quail, pheasant or ruffed grouse, wild turkey, or red, gray, fox or black squirrel, except such person have a license from the State so to do. INDIANA. Deer. It is unlawful to hunt or kill deer between January i and October i, in any year. Quail, Wild Turkey, Pheasant. Netting or trapping of quail is forbidden. It is unlawful to shoot or have in possession any quails or pheasants between January i and November lo; or to kill any wild turkey between February i and November i of any year. Prairie Clilckens. It is unlawful to kill prairie hens or chickens, between February i and September i in each year, or to net or trap same at any time. Woodcock, W^ild Duck. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any woodcock between January i and July i ; or any wild duck between April 1$ and September i, in any year. Hunting; on Land of Anotlier. Hunting on lands of another, without written consent of the owner or occupant thereof, is forbidden. Sale of Game. Transportation of Game. It is unlawful to receive or transport any game killed or taken illegally. Transportation. It is unlawful to transport beyond the limits of the State any deer, buck, doe or fawn, any quail, pheasant, wild duck, grouse, prairie chicken or woodcock. "Wild Plgreons. It is unlawful to kill, main, or discharge any firearms at any wild pigeon or pigeons, at or within one-half mile of where they are gathered together in bodies, known as pigeon roostings and nestings, when and while they arc nesting. Squirrels. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any squirrels between December 20 and June i of the following year. Birds. It is imlawful to kill any wild birds other than a game bird; or purchase or offer for sale any such wild bird after it has been killed, or to destroy the nests or eggs of any wild bird. The English or European house spar- row, crows, hawks and other birds of prey, arc not in- cluded among the birds protected by this act. INDIAN TERRITORY. Any person other than an Indian, who, within the limits of any tribe with whom the United States has treaties in existence, hunts, traps, destroys or takes any game or peltries, except for subsistence in the Indian county, shall forfeit all ammunition, guns and traps in his possession, used or procured to be used for that purpose, and all skins or pelts so taken, and shall be liable in addition to a $500 penalty. IOWA, 'Wild Turkey or Ruffed Grouse. Killing prohibited until January i, 1900. Close Seasons. Prairie chicken or pinnated grouse, December i to Sep- tember I, following. Ruflfed grouse, pheasant and quail between January i and November i. Woodcock between January i and July 10. Wild duck, brant or goose be- tween April 15 and September i. Gray timber or fox squirrel between the first day of January and the first day of June. Trespass. No person shall hunt with dog or gun upon the culti- vated or enclosed lands of another without permission of owner, occupant or agent thereof. 'Wild Fowl Methods. The use of any but a common shoulder gun is forbidden. Bxportatlom. Shipment to any person within the State is permitted, but no person must ship more than one dozen birds in one day, provided that he shall make an affidavit before some authorized person that said game birds have been lawfully killed, bought or sold, and arc not being transported for profit or sale. He must also give the name and post office address of the person to whom goods are shipped, and the number thereof. Lawful Numlber— Baillmv f«r Sale. The killing for sale or traffic of any ruflFed grouse or pheasant, pinnated grouse or prairie chicken, quail or woodcock is prohibited. It is also unlawful for any one person to kill in any one day more than twenty-five ol either kind of said birds, or to have more than twenty- five of either kind in possession at any one time unles» lawfully received for transportation. Shooting or killing quail in the public highway is for- bidden. • KANSAS. Birds— Open Seaaon. Grouse, prairie chicken, quail, during October and No- vember. other Birds. It is unlawful to hunt or kill, or trap any pheasant, oriole, meadow lark, robin, thrush, red bird, mocking bird, blue jay, turtle dove, yellow hammer or blue bird, except that the owner of an orchard may shoot any blue jays» orioles or yellow hammers at any time. Sale and Transportation. The barter or sale of any protected bird or birds is pro- hibited; also the shipment of same. KENTUCKY, According to the law of 1894, the killing of the following animals is forbidden during the time specified below: CJompllments of THE UNION MErTADLIC CARTRIDGE CO. 26 KENTUCKY-^ LONG ISLAND Deer: Buck, doc or fawn, between March i and Septem- ber i. Wildfowl: Wild goose, wild duck, teal or other wild goose, between April i and August 15. Squirrel: Black, gray or fox squirrel, between February i and June 15; gray squirrel may be killed for protection of cropt. Wild turkey, between February i and September i; woodcock, between February i and June 20; quail, partridge or pheasant, between January i and November IS; dove, between February i and August i. Other Birds. Meadow larks, thrush, martin, finch, swallow, flicker, red bird, oriole, woodpecker, tanager, catbird or other song or insectivorous birds are protected at all times ex- cept when destroying crops. LONQ ISLAND. These laws to apply to Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island Sound only. W^tld Fowl. Web-footed wild fowl shall not be killed or possessed from the first day of May to the thirtieth day of Septem- ber, both inclusive; nor shall the same be killed between sunset and daylight; nor shall the same be killed or caught in any way, save with gun raised at arm's length and fired from the shoulder without other rest; nor from any boat other than a boat propelled by hand or floating device; such fowls caught or killed shall not be brought to the shore, sold or possessed. The use of floating de- vices in hunting web-footed wild fowl on Long Island and waters adjacent thereto is prohibited. Floating de- vices may be used for the purpose of shooting web-footed wild fowl therefrom in Long Island Sound, Great South Bay west of Smith's Point, Shinnecock and Peconic bays, and in any part of said counties said birds may be pursued and killed from boats propelled by hand, and from any sailboats in Long Island Sound, Gardiner and Peconic bays. Plover, curlew, jack snipe, bittern, Wilson's (commonly known as English) snipe, yellow legs, killdeer, willet snipe, dowitcher, short-necks, rail, sand-piper, bay snipe, surf snipe, winter snipe, ring-necks and oxeye: shall not be killed or possessed except from the first day of July to the thirty-first day of December, both inclusive. Black and Gray Squirrels. Black and gray squirrels shall not be killed or possessed, except from the first day of November to the thirty-first day of December, both inclusive. MeadoTT Hens. Meadow hens, mud hens, gallinule or water chicken or grebe shall not be killed or possessed from the thirty- first day of December to the fifteenth day of August, both inclusive. Woodcock, Q,nail, Grouse. Ruffed grouse, commonly known as partridge, or any member of the grouse family or quail shall not be hunted or killed from January i to October 31, both inclusive. Woodcock shall not be hunted or killed from January i to July 31, inclusive. Nor shall either of such birds be possessed, dead or alive, or sold after the fifth day of January, and possession thereof during the first five days of January is forbidden, unless it be proved by the possessor or seller that said birds were killed within the lawful period for killing the same on Long Island. Hares and Rabbits. Hares and rabbits shall not be shot at, hunted or killed, nor, except in that portion of Long Island which i? em- braced in the territory of the City of New York, shall they be possessed, except from November i to December 31, inclusive. Shooting at, hunting with dogs or otherwise, or killing deer is prohibited on Long Island, except during the first two Wednesdays and the first two Fridays in the month of November, in each year. Possession of venison in any of the forests in Sufifolk County, inhabited by deer, on any other day shall be presumptive evidence of a violation of this section. Wild deer or venison shall not be possessed or sold except between August 15 and November 20; and possession thereof, between August 15 and the lawful day for killing deer in November, and between November 15 and November 20, is prohibited and shall be deemed a violation of this section unless it be proved by the possessor or seller that such deer or venison was killed within the lawful period for killing the same, or out of the State. LOUISIANA. Deer. It is unlawful to kill any wild deer or fawn between March i and October i. Q,nall, Partridge or Pkeaaant. Close seasons between April i and October i. Wild Tarkey. Close seasons between April 15 and October i. riAINE. Moose and Deer. It is unlawful at any time to hunt, kill or have in posses- sion any cow or calf moose; and the term "calf moose" shall mean that these animals are calves until they are at least one year old, and have at least two prongs or tines to their horns. It is unlawful, between December i and October 15, to hunt or kill any bull moose, and no per- son shall, between October 15 and December i, hunt or kill, or have in possession more than one bull moose or part thereof. MAINE 29 possession any deer or part thereof, between December IS and October i, and no person shall kill or have in possession more than two deer or parts thereof. Use of Doira Proltibited. It is unlawful to hunt or kill, with dogs, Jack lights, arti- ficial lights, snares or traps, any moose, deer or caribou Six Years' Close Time on Caribou. No person shall, within six years from October 15, 1899, in any manner hunt or kill, or have in possession any caribou or parts thereof. One Deer for Food in September. It is lawful, from September i to October i, of each year, to kill one deer, for food purposes only, to be consumed in the locality where taken, by the person taking the same, in either of the counties of Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Aroostook, Hancock or Washington, such person having first procured a license therefor, on payment of $6 by a non-resident, and $4 by a resident of this State; but it shall be unlaw- ful for non-residents of the State to take a deer as pro- vided in this section, or to enter upon the wild lands of this State with intent to camp and kindle fires thereon, while engaged in hunting or fishing, without being in charge of a registered guide, during the months of June, July, August, September and October; provided that the provisions of this section shall not apply to any person who while hunting or fishing, stop at any hunting or fishing camp, which is owned or under the control of any registered guide or registered camp owner. Deer In Certain Counties. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any deer in either of the counties of York, Cumberland, Androscoggin or Saga- dahoc, for four years from October i, 1899, and it is un- lawful to hunt or kill any deer in the counties of Knox, Lincoln, and Waldo, except during the month of October Oompllmenti ©f THE UNION MBTAI/LIO CARTRIDGE 00. 30 MAINE of each year, or in Kennebec, except during October and November of each year, and no person shall take, kill or have in possession more than two deer. Sunday Close Timie. Sunday is a close time, on which it is not lawful to hunt, kill or destroy game or birds of any kind. Transportation. No person or corporation shall carry or transport from place to place any moose or deer, or part thereof, in close time nor in open time unless open to view, tagged and plainly labeled with the name and residence of the owner thereof, and accompanied by him; but nothing herein shall apply to the transportation of moose or deer by any person or corporation when such game is lawfully tagged in accordance with the provisions of Section 26. Section 26. Any person who has lawfully killed a moose (or a deer, except in September as here- tofore provided), may send the same to his home or to any hospital in the State, without accompanying the same, by purchasing of the duly constituted agent there- for a tag, paying for a moose $5, for a deer $2, and fifty cents for a pair of game birds. Whoever lawfully kills a bull moose shall, while the same or any part thereof is being transported, preserve and transport it with the evidence on the moose of the sex of the same. Partridge, Woodcock, Dncks and Other Birds. It shall be unlawful to hunt, kill or have in possession any wood duck, dusky duck, commonly called black duck, teal, and gray duck, between May i and Septem- ber I of each year; or any rufifed grouse, commonly called partridge, or woodcock, from December i to September 15; any quail from December i to October i; any plover or snipe from May i to August i. No person shall, in any one day, kill or have in possession more than 15 of each variety of the above named birds, Oompllmenti of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. MAINE 31 except plover and snipe, during the respective open season for each; nor shall any person, at any time, kill or have in possession any ruffed grouse commonly called partridge, except for his own consumption in this State, except as hereinafter provided; nor shall any person at any time sell, or offer for sale, any ruffed grouse, commonly called partridge; nor shall any person or corporation carry or transport at any one time more than 15 of any one variety of the birds above named as the property of one person; and it is unlawful for a term of ten years to hunt or kill the capercailzie, or cock of the woods, so called, black game, so called, or any species of the pheasant, except ruffed grouse or part- ridge. It is unlawful to kill or have in possession any birds commonly known as larks, robins, swallows, spar- rows, woodpeckers, or orioles, or other insectivorous birds (crows, English sparrows, and hawks excepted). It is unlawful to take any wild duck of any variety, quail, ruffed grouse, or partridge, woodcock, or any bird, except by the usual method of sporting with fire arms. It is unlawful to kill in any manner any wild duck of any variety on the Kennebec River or on the shores thereof, south of the Gardiner and Randolph bridge, or on Merrymeeting Bay, or the shores thereof, between sunset and daylight of the following morning; and to hunt, kill, or destroy any wild duck, at any time, with the aid of jack-lights, or any artificial light. Mink, Sable, Mnskrat, Flsber and Beaver. It is unlawful between May i and October 15 to hunt or kill any mink, sable, muskrat, or fisher, excepting, how- ever, that it shall be lawful to kill muskrats in Lily pond in the towns of Rockport and Camden, and also such muskrats as interfere at any time with the operation and maintenance of any canal, ditch, lawful dam, or cran- berry bog. Whoever at any time kills or destroys any beaver, except upon written permission of the commis- sioners of inland fisheries and game, shall be fined. It is unlawful to kill any quail or partridge, American, English or Mongolian pheasant, ruflfed grouse or wild turkey in Garrett County between January i and Novem- ber I, or any rabbits from February i to November i in Garrett and Allegany counties. It is unlawful to kill any partridge, wild turkey or quail between January i and November i, or any woodcock between January i and September i. It is unlawful to kill any of the above named birds or game animals in the counties of Howard, Baltimore, Washington, Frederick, Montgomery, Cal- vert, Prince George's, Charles, Kent, Talbot and Caro- line between the twenty-fourth day of December and the first of November, and in the counties of Harford, Montgomery, St Mary's, Queen Anne's, Cecil and Anne Arundel, it is unlawful to kill any quail or partridge, pheasant or rabbit between December 24 and November ID following. It is unlawful to kill any of the above men- tioned birds or game animals in the counties of Dor- chester, Wicomico, Somerset or Worcester between Feb- ruary I and November 10; provided, however, that it shall be lawful ip all the counties of the State to shoot woodcock during the month of July. It is unlawful to kill any wild ducks, except blackhead ducks, wild brant, wild swan, wild goose, between April 10 and November i; provided that it shall not be law- ful in Charles County to kill any acorn or summer duck between April lo and October i; and provided, further, that this section shall not apply to Worcester County, and that nothing contained in this act is intended to inter- fere with, or in any manner repeal the Public Local Laws of Cecil and Harford counties regulating the shooting of wildfowl in those parts of the waters of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay, commonly called the Susquehanna Flats. Doves. It is unlawful to kill any doves between December 24 and August 15 following. Snipe, PloTer. It is unlawful to kill any snipe or plover between May i and August 15; provided, however, that this shall not apply to Worcester County. Water Rail, Ortolaji, Reed Bird, Rail Bird, Rice Bird. It is unlawful to kill any water rail, ortolan, reed bird, rail bird or rice bird between November i and Septem- ber I following. Birds Not Game. It is unlawful to kill, at any time, any wren, humming-- bird, sparrow, turkey buzzard, blue bird, blue jay, mi- gratory or other thrush, martin, wood robin, mocking bird, red-breasted robin, catbird, oriole, lark, swallows, red bird, pewit, indigo bird, chewink, sapsucker, gold finch, cedar bird, whip-poor-will, yellow-breasted chat, mackerel gull or herring gull, or gull of any description; provided, however, that it shall not be unlawful at any time to kill the hawk or other birds destructive to domestic poultry, or the English sparrow, crow or black- bird, and that this law shall not apply to St. Mary's and Compliments of THE UNION METALLIC CABTEIDGH CO. 84 MAEYLAND Calvert counties, and that it shall be lawftd to kavc mockingbirds or red birds, or other song birds, in cages, or stuflfed specimens of any of these birds in edMcatioaal institutions or public or private museums. ■bowlder Onm Omly. No person shall shoot at or Idll any of the birds or game animals mentioned above, with any other kind of gun than that which is raised at arm's length from the shoulder, and it is unlawful to use, sell, or have in pos- session, any big or swivel gun, for the purpose of shoot- ing at or killing any swan, wild brant, geese, wild ducks or other water fowl. Nlffbt Sbootlns. Night shooting of birds is prohibited. Wild Fofrl •& Feeding Oronnda. It is unlawful, at any time, to shoot at or in any way disturb wild ducks, wild swan, wild brant, wild geese or other water fowl of any kind, while on their feeding or roosting grounds. "Weaael, Ferret. The use of weasels or ferrets is forbidden. It is unlawful, at any time, to molest or destroy the nests or eggs of any of the above mentioned birds, except those of hawks, crows, blackbirds, English sparrows or other birds destructive of domestic poultry and gams birds. Any person above the age of eighteen years shall be al- lowed, for scientific purposes only, to kill birds or mam- mals or collect eggs, provided said person shall have obtained a certificate in writing from the State Gamt Warden. 'Wild or Passengr«r Pigeon, Gnll or Tern. It is a misdemeanor to kill or shoot any of these between May I and October i. Fine, $10. "Wild Fowl Metlioda. The open season for killing wild ducks, wild geese, brant and other wild water fowl in the Upper Peninsula is from September until January 15, following thereafter. Wild Pisreon, Mongrollan and Bnsllsb Plieaaant% Doves. Wild pigeon, Mongolian and English pheasants are pro- tected until the year 1905. It is unlawful to kill mourn- ing doves at any time. Songr or Insectivoroaa Bird*. The killing of song or insectivorous birds of any kind is unlawful. Sale of Oame Birds. The sale of partridges, quail or woodcock is prohibited absolutely. Deer. Open season for hunting, deer in any portion of the State except Alcona, Lapeer, Huron, Sanilac, Tuscola, Macomb, Allegon, Ottawa and St. Clair counties, November 8 to November 30, both inclusive. All hunters must be provided with a license to hunt deer. The resident license fee is 75 cents. Non-residents must take out a non-resident license, the fee for which is $25. It is unlawful to make use of dogs in hunting or pur- suing deer, and the presence of a hound in a hunting camp or club house during the hunting season is made prima facie evidence of guilt. Five days are allowed hunters to get their deer out of the woods after the close of the hunting season, after which it is a violation for transportation companies to transport or have them in possession. Open season for hunting fox, black and grey squirrels^ October i to December 31, both inclusive. niNNESOTA. Bllc, Deer. It is unlawful to kill any elk, fawn, deer, at any time, ex- cept that deer may be killed between November i and November 20; but no person shall kill more than five deer in any one season; provided, that deer lawfully killed may be had in possession five days after the time herein limited for killing the same. It is unlawful to ship any elk, moose, caribou, or deer, except the same is in the control of and accompanied by some person in charge thereof other than an employee of a common carrier. It is unlawful for any person to ship more than five of any such animals in any one year from and after November 5. Mooae, Caribou. It is unlawful to hunt, catch, ship or have in possession or under control at any time, any moose or caribou, except that antlered moose and antlered caribou may be killed between November 5 and November 10 in the same year. It is unlawful to kill more than one moose and one caribou in any one season. When any male moose or male caribou have been lawfully killed they may be had in possession for five days after the time herein limited for killing the same. Ijavrful Metliods. No person shall at any time enter into any growing or standing grain not his own with intent to catch, recover, take or kill any bird or animal, nor permit any dog with which he may be hunting to do so for such purpose without permission from the owner or person in charge thereof. Dlrd«. It is unlawful to kill or have in possession at any time any whippoorwill, night-hawk, bluebird, finch, thrush, linnet, lark, wren, martin, swallow, bobolink, robin, cat- bird or any other harmless bird, except blackbirds, crows, hawks and English sparrows, except as hereinafter allowed (but nothing herein contained shall be con- strued to prevent the keeping of songbirds as domestic pets). Gaiii« Birds. It is unlawful to kill any turtle dove, snipe, prairie chicken or pinnated grouse, white-breasted or sharp- tailed grouse, between November i and September i, following; or any quail, partridge, ruffed grouse or pheasant, between December i and October i, follow- ing; or woodcock, upland plover between October 31 and July 4 following; or any Mongolian, English or Chinese pheasant at any time prior to September i, 1904. It is unlawful to hunt or kill wild ducks of any variety, or any variety of wild goose, brant, or any variety of aquatic fowl whatever, between January i and Septem- ber I following. It is unlawful to sell, expose for sale or have in possession any of the said waterfowl between January i and April 15; except that when the birds mentioned have been lawfully caught or killed within the time herein allowed, they may be had in possession ten days after the time hereinbefore limited for use as herein specified and not otherwise. Lawful Metbods. It is unlawful to at any time kill any of the birds mentioned in any other manner than by shooting them with a gun held to the shoulder; and it is unlawful to use any trap, snare, net, birdlime, swivel gun or any contrivance or device whatever, or to make use of any artificial light, battery or other deception, except that decoys and blinds may be used in hunting wild geese, ducks and brant, and it is unlawful to hunt or shoot from any boat, canoe or contrivance or device whatever on any waters in this State between dark and daylight, or to shoot from any floating battery, sink box or sunken tub, or any similar device. Bxport Forbidden. It is unlawful to kill or have in possession any of the birds mentioned, with intent to ship the same beyond the limits of the State or to allow or aid in their ship- ment. License. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any deer, elk, caribou or moose without having in possession a license so to do. License fee for non-residents $25. License fee for resi- dents 25 cents. If any person shall knowingly hunt or fish on the lands of another, against the wish of the owner or occupant, he shall be fined. The Boards of Supervisors have authority to regulate the times and the places in which and the circumstances under which game may be taken. There is no general State Law. Sunday Shooting:. Hunting or killing any game or birds on Sunday is un- lawful. nissouRi. Deer. It is unlawful to kill any deer under one year of age, or any deer of any age between January i and October i, or any doe until 1900. IVlld, SonsT or Insectlvorona Birds. It is unlawful to kill any wild, song or insectivorous birds at any season of the year, or rob or destroy the nests, or take eggs therefrom. W^lld Turkey, Pinnated Grouse, Prairie Chicken, Ruffed Grouse. It is unlawful to kill any of these or any quail between January i and November i, or any woodcock, turtle dove, meadow lark or plover between January i and August I, or to injure or destroy any of the above by means of traps, pens or pits. \^lld Duek. Killing wild duck is forbidden between April i and Oc- tober I. Snaring, trapping or killing by means of any explosive any wild geese or ducks, or shooting or kill- ing same between sunset and sunrise, is forbidden, pro- viding that persons may trap, snare or net wild ducks or geese on their own premises for their own use. Meadow I^arlc, Robin, Blue Bird, "FhraKla, Oriole, Woodpecker, Mocking: Bird, Goldllncb, Sno'w-Blrd, Cedar Bird or Stork. It is forbidden to shoot or kill any small singing birds such as the above. Buffalo, £:ik. Moose. It is a misdemeanor, punishable by heavy fine and im- prisonment, to catch or trap, for the purpose of sale, do- mestication or any other purpose, any of these animals. "Wild Fowla. It is a misdemeanor, punishable by fine and imprison- ment, to wilfully destroy the nests or remove the eggs from same, of any of the birds or wild fowls mentioned in any of these Acts. Transportation and Sale of Game. Railroad companies and their agents, and public carriers of all sorts, are forbidden to transport out of the Statc^ game taken or killed contrary to the provisions of thii Act, or at a time other than in open season. It is a mis- demeanor to sell any such game during close season. NEBRASKA. Deer, Antelape, Slllc. It is unlawful to kill any deer, antelope or elk between January i and November i, or to ensnare any of the above, except for purposes of domestication, at any time of the year. Gante Birds. It is unlawful to kill any wild goose, brant, wild mallard duck, wood duck, teal duck, shoveller or spoon-bill duck, canvas-back duck, red-head duck, blue-bill or scaup duck, widgeon or bald-pate duck, gadwall or gray duck, dusky or black duck, buffle-headed or butter-ball duck, pin or sprig-tail duck, ruddy or turkey-tail duck, or any other wild duck, or any Wilson jack-snipe or woodcock be- tween May I and September i, or to net, snare or trap, or wade or use blinds to kill any of the above birds at any time of the year, or to kill same at night, or to use any but a common shoulder gun, or any punt or sneak boat. Eggs and nests protected. BxportatioB. It is unlawful for any person or transportation company to ship for sale, or ship any game that has been sold, any protected animal or part thereof in or out of the State. NEVADA. The shipment of game from the State of Nevada is pro- hibited. The close season for all game birds is from April I to September i, with a few exceptions. NEW HAHPSHIRE. Moose, Cftribon and Wild Deer. If any person shall, between the date of the passage of this Act (February i6, 1897) and September 15, 1901, cap- ture or destroy any moose or caribou within this State, or shall, within the above dates, capture or destroy any wild deer, except in Carroll and Coos Counties, and the eastern and western judicial districts of Grafton County, CJomplIments of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. NEW HAMPSHIRE 45 (except in the town of Lyme), he shall be fined; who- ever at any time captures or destroys any deer, by the use of a jack or by trapping or snaring same shall be fined. Ckime Birds. It is unlawful until September 15, 1901, to hunt or kill any pheasant, black game, sharp-tailed grouse, or caper- cailzie, or remove or destroy the nests or eggs of said birds, under penalty of $20 fine. After September 15, 1901, the open season for these birds is between Septem- ber 15 and December 31 inclusive, and then only for consumption within the State, the killing to be done with firearms only. Sonar and Insectivorous Birds. The killing of the following birds is prohibited at all times: robin, thrush, lark, blue-bird, sparrow (except English sparrow), finch, bunting, martin, oriole, swallow, flycatcher, warbler, nuthatch, or any other song or in- sectivorous bird, or to remove or disturb the eggs or the nests of same. Otber Birds— Close Season. Plover, yellow-legs, sandf iper, duck (except shelldrake), rail, February i to August i; woodcock, ruffed grouse, partridge or quail December 15 to September 15. It is * misdemeanor to kill for the purpose of selling, or expos- ing for sale any woodcock, ruflfed grouse, or partridge after September 15, or during the months of October, November and December, or plover during the months of August to January, inclusive, of the following year, except for consumption as food in the State. Beaver. The killing of beaver is prohibited until January i, 1909, under fine of $50 for each beaver taken or killed before that time. Sable, Otter or Flsker. Close season April i to October 15. Penalty $50.00. Deer. It is unlawful to kill or have in possession any wild deer, buck, fawn or doe, except between October 25 and No- vember 5, inclusive. Hare, Rabbit, Qnall. It is unlawful to kill, injure or have in possession any of these except between November 10 and January i, inclu- sive. Game Birds— Open Seaaon. It is lawful to hunt or kill any woodcock in July, and also between October i and December 10; gray snipe, during March, April and September; ruffed grouse (called partridge), pheasant, European pheasant, Euro- pean partridge and European grouse, between October i and December 10, inclusive; reed bird, rail bird or marsh hen, between August 25 and January i. It is unlawful to kill, injure or catch, or have in posses- sion, any night hawk, whip-poor-will, thrush, meadow- lark, finch, martin, barn-swallow, woodpecker, robin, oriole, red or cardinal bird, cedar bird, tanager or other insectivorous bird, except English sparrow, crane, hawk, crows, ravens, crow-blackbirds, kingfisher or redwinged blackbirds, which may be killed at any time. "WilA Forrl Metko4«. It is unlawful for any person when hunting geese, duck, brant, or other web-footed wild fowl, to place the boat or sink-box, or other floating vessel, in which he lies in wait, at a distance of more than one hundred feet from ice, or from marsh or meadow, banked or heaped sea- weed not covered with water at high tide; the said boat or float to be attached to marsh or meadow by a line. It b unlawful for any person to kill or catch any web-footed wild fowl between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, or to shoot or to pursue any of the same from any vessel propelled by any means other than oars or paddles. It is also unlawful to kill or have in posse- sion any goose, duck, brant, or such other web-footed wild fowl between May i and September 30. It is unlawful to hunt with a dc^ and gtin, or with a fire- arm or other weapon, or to carry a gun, in the woods or fields on Sninday. In all cases where a person shall be convicted a second time, double the penalty shall be imposed upon him. SUnsr-neeked Pheasant. It is unlawful, for three years after the passage of this act (March, 1899), to hunt or kill any ring-necked pheasant; provided, that this act shall not apply to any preserves for pheasants already established. T^rappinsT and Snarlngr Forbidden. It is unlawful to have in possession, sell or offer for sale, any rabbit, quail, ruffed grouse, English pheasant, English partridge, English grouse, woodcock, reed bird, rail bird, grass or upland plover, marsh hen, duck, or any other game birds or animals, after the same has been caught or trapped by means of any snare, snood, net or trap. I>eer. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any deer, buck, doc or fawn, for a period of three years from the passage of this act (March 24, 1899); provided, that this act shall not apply to any preserve for deer at present established. Certificate for Collection of Eggs and Nests. Certificates will be issued by the New Jersey Board of Fish and Game Commissioners, to properly accredited persons, permitting them to collect birds and their nests and eggs for strictly scientific purposes. Heats. It is unlawful to rob or destroy the eggs or nests of any wild bird whatever. <3ompllment« of THE UNION MBTALLIO OABTRIDGB GO. NEW YORK 49 NEW YORK. Hounding;. Deer shall not be hunted, pursued or killed with any dog or bitch in this State for the term of five years from the fifteenth day of August, 1897, Dogs of the breed com- monly used for hunting deer shall not be permitted by the owner, or person harboring the same, to run at large for or during the said term of five years in the forest where deer inhabit. The provisions of this section as to the close season shall not apply to Long Island. If any dog or bitch of the breed used for hunting deer shall be found hunting, pursuing or killing any deer or running at large in the forests of this State where deer inhabit, it shall be deemed prima facie evidence of the violation of the foregoing section by the person or persons owning, using, having or harboring such dog or bitch. Dogs, while chasing deer in violation of law, or any dog or bitch that will hunt, chase or pursue deer, may be killed by any person when found running at large in the forest of this State where deer inhabit, and it is the duty of every game protector and forester to kill all dogs when found running at large in violation of this Act, and no action for damage shall lie or be maintained against any person for such killing. Sanirrels, Hares and Rabbits. Black and gray squirrels shall not be killed or possessed, except from September i to December 15, inclusive. In the counties of Livingston, Wyoming, Erie, Sullivan. Oneida, Orange, Schoharie, Montgomery, Fulton and Hamilton, Albany, Greene, Ulster and Columbia, hares and rabbits shall not be killed or possessed except from September i to December 15, inclusive. The use of ferrets is prohibited. The provisions of this section shall not apply to Long Island. Mink, Skunk, Mnskrat, Fox. No person shall catch or kill within the counties of Cat- Compliments of THE UNION MB^TAliLIO OARTRIDGB OO. 50 NEW YORK taraugus, Oneida, Madison, Otsego, Wayne, Cayuga, Livingston, Jefferson, Chemung, Chenango and Wyo- ming, any mink, sktink, muskrat or fox, or injure or destroy any muskrat house, except upon the premises owned or possessed by him or within the limits of an incorporated village or city, or have the same in his possession which was so killed from May i to October 31, except that foxes shall not be killed or caught in any of said counties except Cayuga from May i to Sep- tember 30. Ctu«U. Quail shall not be pursued, shot at, hunted or killed, ex- cept from the first day of November until the fifteenth day of December. Quail shall not be sold or possessed except during the months of November and December, but possession thereof during the month of December after expiration of close season is forbidden and sliall be deemed a violation of this section unless it be prored by the possessor that said birds were killed within the lawful periods for killing the same, or outside the State and in the counties of Genesee and Montgomery at no time prior to January i, 1903. The provisions of this section shall not apply to Robin's Island and Gardiner's Island. IToodcoelc, Grovae. Woodcock, or ruffed grouse, commonly known as part- ridge, or any member of the grouse family, shall not be caught or killed from December 16 to August 31, in- clusive; or in the County of Oneida from November r6 to August 31st, inclusive; or in the County of Ulster, from December 16 to September 30, inclusive. No per- son shall kill, catch, or take alive more than thirty-six woodcock or thirty-six grouse in any open season. NEW YORK 51 ridge, or any member of the grouse family, and quail, shall not be caught, killed or possessed after the same has been killed in Rensselaer County, prior to Septem- ber I, 1903. 'Woodcock and Grouse— When Not to Be Possessed. Woodcock, ruffed grouse, commonly known as part- ridge, or any member of the grouse family, shall not be sold or possessed except from the first day of September to the thirty-first day of December, both inclusive, and possession or sale thereof during the last fifteen days of December is prohibited and shall be deemed a violation of this section, unless it be proved by the possessor or seller that said birds were caught or killed within the lawful period for killing the same or out of the State. This section shall not apply to Long Island. "Woodcock, Counties of Clinton, Sussex, Warren, Ham- ilton and Fulton. Woodcock shall not be caught, killed or possessed, ex- cept from August 16 to December 15, inclusive, in the counties of Clinton, Essex, Warren, Hamilton and Ful- ton. W^oodcock, Q,nail and Grouse-- W^ben Not to Be Trann- ported. Woodcock, rufifed grouse, commonly known as part- ridge, or any member of the grouse family, or quail killed in this State, shall not be transported from any one point to another point within or without the State from or through any of the counties thereof or possessed for that purpose, nor from a less distance than twenty-five miles from the State line outside of this State to be transported into this State in the open season for transportation, ex- cept that such birds may be transported from the county where killed or through any of the counties of this State from one point to another point when accompanied by the actual owner thereof. Provided, that no person, as- sociation or company shall transport or accompany more Compliments of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRDIGE CO. 52 NEW YORK than thirty-six woodcock or thirty-six grouse under the above provisions in any calendar year, nor more than twelve of either kind at any one time. Wild Fowl a»d W^eb-Footed Wild Fowl. Wild fowl and web-footed wild fowl (except geese and brants) arc not to be hunted, killed, owned or sold be- tween April 30 and September i, and at any time between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise. Web- footed wild fowl must not be killed or caught in any way except with a common shoulder gun, nor with any but a boat propelled by hand or floating device, nor by the use of any blind or bough house at more than fifty feet from either shore or a natural growth of flags or grass. On the Hudson River, below the dam at Troy, boats pro- pelled by hand may be used for shooting wild fowl. Meadow Larks. Meadow larks shall not be shot at, killed or possessed after they are dead at any time. Mongolian Ring-necked Pbeasant. No person shall kill, expose for sale, or have in posses- sion after the same has been killed, any Mongolian ring- necked pheasant prior to the year 1905, except in the County of Suffolk. Mongolian ring-necked pheasants shall not be killed in the County of Suffolk, except from October i to January 31, inclusive. Skootins Game in "Westeliester Connty. In the County of Westchester, no game of any kind shall be shot at or killed from any public highway, or from the track or lands of any railway company or from the lands purchased or condemned for the Croton aque- duct. Deer- Wild deer shall not be caught, shot at, hunted or killed except from the fifteenth day of August to the fifteenth day of November, both inclusive. And in the counties of Ulster, Greene and Delaware no wild deer shall be caught, shot at, hunted or killed at any time within five years from the passage of this act (1897). Wild deer or venison shall not be possessed or sold, ex- cept from the fifteenth day of August to the twentieth day of November, both inclusive; and possession thereof from the fifteenth day of November to the twentieth day of November, inclusive, is forbidden, and shall be deemed a violation of this section, unless it be proved by the possessor or seller that such deer or venison was killed within the lawful period for killing, or out of the State. Fawns Not to Be Killed. No fawns shall be caught or killed at any time in this State. Transportation. Any venison or deer killed in New York State may be transported to any point in or out of the State only as follows : One carcass or any part thereof may be shipped from the county where killed when accompanied by the owner. No person shall ship or accompany more than two deer in one year. This does not apply to the skin, head or feet of deer severed from the body. Crnstlns and Tardlngr. Deer shall not be hunted, killed or captured by what is commonly known as crusting, nor while they are yarded. wild Moose, Bile, Carlbon and Antelope. Wild moose, elk, caribou or antelope shall not be hunted, killed, possessed or sold at any time in this State; pro- vided, however, that moose, elk, caribou and antelope may be possessed and transported into this State for breeding purposes; and it is further provided that the meat of any moose, elk, caribou or antelope may be pos- r^mpllmenta of THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE OO. 54 NEW YORK sessed or sold during the season for the possession of venison, if it be proved by the possessor that such meat was killed outside of the State or by persons who own or are in charge of private parks and arc the actual owners of said moose, elk, caribou or antelope. Beaver Not to Be Killed. No beaver shall be caught or killed at any time in this State. Smipe, Plover and Other Birds. Plover, rail, mud hen, Wilson's (English) snipe, grebe, gallinule, bittern, surf bird, curlew, water chicken, bay snipe or shore bird, must not be killed or possessed dur- ing May, June, July and August. ^Wlld Birds. All wild birds except those protected at certain seasons of the year, and those following, must not be hunted or killed at any time, unless the person hunting holds a cer- tificate for hunting same. The nests and eggs of such birds are also protected at all times. The exceptions are English sparrow, crow, hawk, raven, crane, crow-black- bird, common blackbird and kingfisher. Eggs and nests also not protected. Oertlflcates for Collectlngr Birds for Scientific Pur- poses. Certificates may be granted by the Regents of the Uni- versity of the State of New York, or by an incorporated society of natural history in the State, to any person over eighteen years of age who is properly accredited, per- mitting holder to collect birds, nests or eggs for scien- tific purposes only. Persons desiring certificate must pay $1 and must file an executed bond for $200, signed by two responsible citizens of New York State as sureties. This bond shall be forfeited to the State and the certificate become void upon proof that the holder has killed any bird, or taken the nests or eggs for any but scientific pur- poses. It is unlawful to shoot wild fowl of any kind from any battery or sneak boat on Sundays, Mondays, Wed- nesdays and Fridays of any week, or to shoot them in such manner before December i; and it is also unlaw- ful to hunt or shoot wild fowl with fire or light after the hour of sunset and before the hour of daylight, or to use any gun other than that fired from the shoulder. Currituck. It is unlawful for non-residents to hunt or shoot any wild fowl in the County of Currituck from any box, battery or float of any kind; or to take or capture any wild fowl in the County of Currituck between March 31 and November 10. or to ship out of the State between said dates, and it is unlawful to hunt, or kill any wild fowl on any Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday between No- vember 10 and March i, to disturb any raft of wild fowl or to leave any landing or anchorage before daylight in the morning for the purpose of hunting wild fowl or to continue to hunt after dark. It is unlawful to sail, row or propel a boat over Currituck Sound on the Lord's day for the purpose of locating wild fowl for a future day; or to lay around, sail around or stop anywhere near any citizen who may be gunning or fishing, for the purpose of keeping them from shooting or damage his shooting. Wild fowl must not be killed for sale in the waters of Brunswick, Currituck and New Hanover counties be- tween March lo and November lo, and wild fowl must not be shipped out of the State between these dates if killed in the waters of the above counties. NORTH DAKOTA. Permits. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any of the wild animals or birds hereinafter mentioned without having first ob- tained a permit; provided, however, that nothing in this section shall prevent any resident of this State or mem- ber of his family living at home from hunting on lands owned or controlled by him during the open season as provided by law. It is unlawful to kill any prairie chicken, pinnated grouse, sharp tailed grouse, ruffed grouse, woodcock or quail, between January i and September i, following, or any song bird or insect eating bird, at any time, ex- cepting crows, blackbirds and sparrows. 'Water Fovrl. It is unlawful to kill any wild duck, wild goose, brant or wild crane between May i and September i, follow- ing; or to kill any plover or curlew between May 15 and September i, following; or to kill any wild duck, goose or brant with any swivel gun or other gun, except such as is commonly shot from the shoulder, or in hunt- ing such birds to make use of any artificial light or battery or employ any trap, snare, net or bird lime, medicated, drugged or poisoned grain or food to capture or kill any of the birds mentioned, or to wantonly de- stroy their nests or eggs. TEXAS. Deer. It is unlawful to hunt, kill, snare or trap any wild deer between January i and September i, or to hunt deer or any other game with any hunting lamp, artificial light or lantern. Killing any rabbit or hare between May i and Septem- ber I is forbidden. Game Birds. It is unlawful to kill or catch any quail, wild duck, wild goose or plover between January i and September i, or ruflfed grouse (partridge) or woodcock, between January I and September 15, or pheasant between November 20 and October i. It is unlawful to hunt wild ducks with jack or artificial light. Exportation of Game for Sale. No person shall kill any woodcock or ruffed grouse for the purpose of shipping, or in any manner disposing of same to parties outside the State for traffic or gain. Imported Birds. Any person who, before January i, 1900, takes or kills a sharp-tailed or pinnated grouse, capercailzie, black game, ptarmigan or pheasant, shall be fined $10 for each bird so taken or killed, but nothing in this section shall be held to prohibit the shooting of pheasants on enclosed and posted land by the owners of such lands, or their licen- sees, between October 10 and December ist of any year providing the pheasants so shot have been actually bred on such lands in a state of captivity. Deer. Deer having horns may be hunted during the month of October each year, but it is unlawful to pursue them with dogs, or to use jack or artificial lights, or snare, trap or salt lick. No person shall kill or have in his pos- session more than two deer during the open season. Every person who has not resided in this State for one year previous to the time of applying for a license to hunt deer in the season as fixed by law, which said license shall include permission to hunt any and all kinds of game protected, twenty-five dollars; for the hunting of all kinds of game protected, with the excep- tion of deer, ten dollars. Every person who has resided in this State for one year previous to applying for a license to hunt game and who desires to hunt the same must first obtain a license for the sum of one dollar. The license so issued to any resident of this State shall have attached two coupons for the shipment of deer. Non-Realdent Transportation of Game. It is unlawful for any person holding a non-resident li- cense to take out of the State more than fifty birds, fowls or animals protected by the laws of this State, in any one year. Provided, that this section shall be con- strued to mean that when fifty birds, fowls or animals of any kind or variety have been taken from the State by holder of a non-resident license further right to take any kind of birds, fowls or animals by the holder of the said license shall cease. No transportation com- pany or common carrier shall receive for transportation or shipment out of the State any birds, fowl or animals protected by the laws of the State, except when the same shall be in the personal possession of, or carried as baggage or express by the owner thereof, and such owner shall have in his possession at the time of such taking out of the State a non-resident license. Resident Transportation of Game. It is unlawful for any person a resident of this State to ship within or without this State any birds, fowls or animals protected, except such owner shall have in his possession a resident license, and shall accompany the said birds, fowls or animals. Possession of Venison by Residents. Landa of Another. Hunting on land of another without permission from the owner or the occupant thereof is forbidden. BnyinsTy Selling or Transportation of Deer. It is unlawful to buy, sell or transport any carcass or part of a carcass of a deer, buck, doe or fawn, until November 6, in each year; and it shall be lawful to sell or transport the carcasses of deer under the conditions provided by law relative to the transportation of the same, up to and including the 25th day of November, suceeding the end of the open season. Any person who shall buy, sell or transport before November 6 in each year, any carcass or part of a carcass of a deer, buck, doe or fawn, or attempt to do the same, shall be punished by a fine. WYOMING. Destrnetlon of Game Prolilblted. The wanton destruction or wasting of the game of this State, during any period when the taking or capture of such game is permitted, is hereby prohibited, and any person taking, or destroying any game in excess of the number as hereinafter provided, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor. Provided, that snipe, green shank, tatler, Godwit, curlew, avoset, or other wader or plover may be shot from September I to May I. Ducks and Gee»«. It is unlawful to ensnare, net or trap any wild duck, wild goose, or wild swan at any time. There shall be an open season from September i until May i, in which ducks, brant or geese may be killed, but nothing but shoulder guns may be used at any time; provided, that on and after the passage of this act it shall be unlawful to kill any wild swan. Moose, Deer, Elk, Ooat, Antelope. It is unlawful to kill moose until September i, 1902, after which date only one male moose may be killed during the hunting season of each year. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any deer, elk, mountain sheep, mountain goat or antelope except from September i to December i, of each year. It is unlawful to take any of the above men- tioned animals by means of any pit, pitfall, trap or snare. Unla-vrfnl t* Sell Oame Animals. It is unlawful to capture any moose, deer, elk, moun- tain sheep, mountain goat or antelope, of whatever age, for the purpose of selling or disposing of the same, or for shipping the same out of the State. Beaver. It is unlawful to kill, or trap any beaver, or kitten bearer, for a period of ten years from and after the ap- proval of this act (1899). It shall be unlawful to purchase, or obtain by barter. any green, tanned or untanned hide or hides, or horns of any moose, deer, elk, mountain sheep, mountain goat or antelope. Sliipment of Stuffed Game. Shipment of mounted heads, or stuffed birds or animals to any point in or out of the State is permitted, pro- vided that such birds or animals were not killed in violation of law, or that heads or horns were not taken from animals killed illegally. Dos8> It is unlawful to use dogs for the purpose of running or coursing deer, antelope, elk or mountain sheep. Gun. License. Any bona fide citizen of the State of Wyoming shall, upon the payment of one dollar to any Justice of the Peace of the county in which he resides, be entitled to receive from said Justice of the Peace, a gun license which shall permit such person to hunt and kill any of the animals mentioned in this section, during the time allowed therefor, of the current year in any of the coun- ties of this State. But no person shall be required to take out such gun license in order to hunt and kill any of the animals mentioned in this section, during the time allowed therefor in the county in which he actual- ly resides. Any person who is not a resident of the State of Wyoming, shall upon the payment to any Jus- tice of the Peace of this State, of the sum of forty dol- lars be entitled to receive from such Justice of the Peace a license, which license shall permit such person to pursue, hunt and kill any of the animals mentioned in this section, during the time allowed therefor of the current year. Amount of Game Limited. Every person who shall have procured and paid for a license shall be entitled to the use and possession of the whole, or any part, of any animal killed. Non-resident Must Have Guide. It shall be unlawful for any non-resident person to kill any of the animals mentioned in this section, unless ac- companied by a qualified guide. Oame May Be Shipped. Every person who may wish to transport beyond the limits of this State, any carcasses, heads, antlers, scalps or skins of any animals killed in accordance with the provisions of this section, shall first procure from a Justice of the Peace of this State, a certificate stating that said parts were taken from animals which were killed legally. YELLOWSTONE PARK. Hnntingr. Capturing or killing any bird or animal within the Park is prohibited, and outfits of parties so doing are subject to seizure and confiscation. Fires may be lighted only when necessary, and then completely extinguished when no longer required. Great care must be exercised at all times to avoid setting fire to the grass or timber. Camplnar Parties Will be allowed to use dead or fallen timber for fuel, but are forbidden to injure or cut any growing timber, or to deface in any way the sediments or incrustations about the geysers, steam-vents or hot springs. The close time on all kinds of deer, including cabri, antelope, elk, wapiti, moose, reindeer, caribou, expired October 15, 1898. Cose season thereafter December 15 to October 15. No one person in any one year or season shall kill or take more than one moose, one caribou and two deer. Cow or female moose cannot be hunted at any time. Dogs may not be used in hunting moose, caribou or deer. Jack lights are pro- hibited. It is unlawful for a guide to accompany a party or person who has not a license, in hunting moose or caribou. Guides and camp help who are not residents of the Province must have a license when accompanying hunting parties or individuals. A close season of moose and caribou has been established for the section west of the River St. John for two years, from the first of September, 1898. A close season for moose, caribou and deer has been established for the county of Albert for five years, from the ist of September, 1898. It is unlawful for any person to catch by means of trap or snares, or to set traps or snares for any moose, caribou or deer. No person shall be allowed to kill or pursue with intent to kill, any moose or caribou at any time of the year without first having obtained a license for the purpose, signed by the Chief Game Commissioner. It is unlawful to hunt, kill or have in possession any beaver or otter before November i, 1900; and thereafter no beaver or otter shall be hunted, killed or had in pos- session between April i and November i. Deer, Blk, Mooae, Reindeer or Caribou. It is unlawful to hunt or kill any deer, elk, moose, rein- deer or caribou between November 15 and November I of the following year; but this shall not apply to moose, elk, reindeer or caribou before or until Novem- ber I, 1900. Hunting or killing deer by what is known as crusting," or while they are "yarding," is hereby declared unlawful. In that portion of the County of Bruce known as the Indian Peninsula no person shall at any time hunt, or kill, any deer in the waters of any river or lake within the limits of the Province of On- tario. PROVINCE OF QUEBEC. The Province of Quebec is divided for hunting pur- poses into two zones, known respectively as Zone No. I and Zone No. 2. Zone No. i comprises the whole Province, less that part of the counties of Chicoutimi and Saguenay, to the east and north of the river Saguenay. Zone No. 2 comprises that part of the counties of Chicoutimi and Saguenay to the east and north of the river Saguenay. PROHIBITION IN ZONE NO. i. Moose, Caribou, Deer. Tranaportatlon. After the first fifteen days of the close season, all rail- way, steamboat and other companies, and public car- riers, are forbidden to carry any moose, caribou or deer, or the green hide thereof. Nevertheless, it is law- ful for the Commissioner, at any time, to grant transport permits. For such permits there may be exacted a fee, the amount Avhereof shall be fixed by the Commissioner, but which shall not exceed five dollars. Number. No person shall, in one season's hunting, kill or take alive more than two moose, three deer and two caribou. The Commissioner may, nevertheless, grant to any per- son domiciled in the Province, on payment of a fee of five dollars, a permit to hunt, or take alive not more than three additional caribou and three additional deer. It is forbidden to kill or take any woodcock, snipe, plover, curlew, tattler or sand-piper, between February i and September i, in each year; birch or swamp part- ridge between December 15 and September i, in earb year, and white partridge, ptarmigan, between February I and November i, in any year; any widgeon, teal or wild duck of any kind, except sheldrake, loons and gulls, between April i and September i, in any year; but the species of buffle-head ducks, commonly known as pied- ducks or divers, may be hunted, killed or taken between September i and April 15 in any year; at any time of the year, between one hour after sunset and one hour be- fore sunrise, in any manner whatever, any woodcock, snipe, partridge, widgeon, teal or wild duck of any kind, and during such prohibited hours, it is also forbidden to keep exposed under any pretext, any lures or decoys near a cache, boat or bank. It is forbidden at all times to shoot or kill, and between March i and September i, in each year, to take by means of nets, traps or snares, or otherwise, any of the birds known as perchers, such as swallows, king-birds, warblers, flycatchers, woodpeckers, whippoorwills, finches, song sparrows, red-birds, indigo birds, cow- buntings, titmice, goldfinches, grives, robins, wood- thrushes, kinglets, bobolinks, grakles, grosbeaks, hum- ming-birds, cuckoos, etc., or to take their nest or eggs, except eagles, falcons, hawks, and other birds of the falconidae, owls, wild pigeons, kingfishers, crows, ravens, waxwing (recollets), shrikes, jays, magpies, spar- rows and starlings.
