C. A Transcript of the Inscriptions on Their Tombstones. 1762—1903. With an Introduction and Foil Index by Dr. BARNETT A. ELZAS, Rabbi of K, K. Beth Elohim, CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, CIIARI,KST0.N%*S. c. '•* *." Thk Daggett Primting Coimpanv, Printers and Book Makers, T903. EDITION 250 COPIES. 3 ^ oH '6 3 INTRODUCTIOX. The value of tombstone records for the purposes of the historian is not yet fully appreciated. Some day, when it is too late, we shall awake to a sense of our neglect. Apart from its intrinsic value, the following record is printed in the hope that others may be led to do likewise. There are three old cemeteries in Charleston whose origin antedates the nineteenth century, though most of their tombs are modern. These old ceme- teries contain many inscriptions of great historical interest and which throw a valuable side-light upon the early history of the Jews in America. Time has borne heavily on many of these stones, many of their inscriptions being decipherable only with the greatest difficulty. This is due, to some extent, to the old custom of having flat slabs. Several of them I have literally unearthed and many are no longer in existence. I have thought it well for the sake of completeness to include all three cemeteries in this volume, and I have added such historical data as will make the record complete. The oldest cemetery at Coming Street is laid out in rows more or less regular. The inscriptions are copied in order and the location of the tombstones is therefore quite easy. I have not followed the in- scriptions line for line, for that would have neces- sitated a much larger volume and, while adding perhaps to its appearance, would not have enhanced its value. My object has been to preserve the record and not to perpetuate the eccentricities of old-time tomb-stones. I would only add that I have several times compared my transcripts with the originals. I can assure the reader of the absolute accuracy of each and every one of them. The cemetery at Coming Street is the oldest Jewish cemetery in South Carolina. It was originally pur- chased by Isaac Da Costa, the first Hazan of Beth Elohim, for a private burying place for his own family. "Finding that it would be a convenient place for the Burial Ground of the Jews' Congregation in general," he, "out of regard for the said congregation, became willing and desirous, and did afterwards intend that the same should be conveyed in trust to the con- gregation." Carrying out his original intention. Isaac Da Costa, conveyed this burial ground in 1764, for a consideration of seventy pounds lawful money of the province, in trust to certain trustees" for a place of burial for the use of the Jews residing in Charles Town or elsewhere within the Province of South Carolina, who do and shall conform to the Jewish rites and ceremonies in general, and who do and shall conform to and observe the rules, orders and regula- tions of the Jews congregation in Charles Town named Beth Eloim." The following are the trustees mentioned in the deed: Joshua Hart, Immanuel Cortissos, Joseph Da Costa and Samuel Da Costa, of Charles Town, and mem- bers of the Jews congregation in Charles Town known by the name of Beth Eloim. Benjamin Mendes Da Costa, Joseph Salvador, Esq., Solomon Da Costa, Moses Franco and Joshua Mendes Da Costa, of the city of London, and members of the Portuguese Jews congregation in the said city known by the name of Sahar Ashamaim. Jacob Lopes Torres, Isaac Mendes Furtado. Benj- amin Dias Fernandes, Isaac Henriquez and Abraham Aguilar, of the Island of Jamaica, and members of the Jews congregation in King's Town in the said Island, known by the name of Sahar Ashamaim. Isaac Piza, Benjamin Messia.s, David Castello, David Lindo and Isaac Pinheiro, of the Island of Barbadoes, and members of the Jews congregation in Bridge Town in said Island, by the name of Nidhe Israel. Jacob Franks, Daniel Gomes, Benjamin Gomes, Isaac Mendes Seixas and Heyman Levy, of the city of New York, and members of the Jews congregation in that city known by the name of Schorit Israel. Moses Lopes, Moses Levy, Naphtali Hart, Jacob Rods. Rivera and Aaron Lopes, of New Port, Rhode Island, and members of the Jews congiegation in the said Island known by the name of Yeshuat Israel. Benjamin Sheftal, Mordecai Sheftal, Minis Minis, Lsaac De Lyon and Levy Sheftal, of the Town of Savannah in the Province of Georgia, and members of the Jews congregation in the said Town of Savan- nah, known by the name of Mikve Israel. The deed is recorded in the office of Mesne Con- veyance, Vol. C 3, p. 108 sq. The Coming Street Cemetery. And well can we indulge this feeling on reviewing the life of the revered being whose re- mains here repose. She was the virtuous woman, "whose price is above rubies, and whose children rise up and call her blessed," for the precepts of God were in her heart and Avere made the rule of her conduct through life. Her survivors can truly exclaim in the words of Holy Writ: "Let me die the death of the righteous and may my last end be like hers." Here Repose the Remains of BARNET A. COHEN, A native of Bristol, England, who died at King Creek, S. C, on the 23rd March, 1839, in the 70th. year of his age. To commemorate the virtues of a beloved parent, and as a memorial of their love and veneration, this stone has been erected by his affectionate children. JOSEPH SAMPSON, A native of England, he was born in the town of Bury St. Edmonds, and emigrated to this city in the year 1817, and departed this life on the 1st day of January, 1830, in the 30th year of his age. Thus in the bloom of life was he summoned to de- part this transitory life to the celestial regions above where the virtuous and just meet their reward after travelling through this vale of tears. He was a kind husband, an affectionate brother, an upright and useful citizen, his hand and heart were always open to assist the unfortunate. He lived and died respected and beloved by all who knew him and when conscious that the hour was come that he must leave this earthly abode, he was perfectly resigned to his fate, trusting in Him above in whose hands our fate is sealed. This tablet was erected by his consort, Mrs. Abigail Sampson, and his only child Abigail, who together with numerous relatives and friends will long lament their irreparable loss. Dear, loving, faithful partner now farewell, — With whom it was my happiness to dwell — To whom I was united heart with heart — Prom whom it was so painful thus to part — Yet shall the gracious hand that took thee hence — By love divine, thy ab.sence recompense; Prepare me for the bliss thou hast, — and then Eternity unite us both again. Adjoining the old cemetery and on a somewhat higher level, is the burial ground of the old Shearith Israel congregation. The introduction of the organ into the new synagogue of Beth Elohim in 1840, divided the congregation into two sections. The orthodox par- ty, having appealed to the law courts in vain, seceded and formed the Shearith Israel congregation. So bitter was the feeling between the two parties, that inter- course between them hardly existed. The seceding section went so far as to purchase their own burial ground. This was walled off from the old cemetery of Beth Elohim. After the re-union of the two congrre- gytions in 1866, the cemeteries were likewise united and the dividing wall puHel down. It originally formed part of Lot 48 of Hampstead, but in spite of much research, I have been unable to trace its successive owners. In a codicil to the will of Sarah Da Costa, the widow of Isaac Da Costa, made on October 7, 1793, she directs that her executors "do purchase out of my estate, eighty feet square of a lot of land, situate in Hamp- stead, which I give and devise to my executors to be held by them and their heirs, or by such persons as they may appoint, for the sole purpose of being a burial gi'ound for my family and the Portuguese Jews." [Wills, Book C, 1793-1800, p. 63.] This ground, however, must have been the property of the Da Costa family many years before this because Isaac Da Costa, the elder, was buried there in 1783 and Joseph Salvador in 1786. as well as other members of the Da Costa family. It was consecrated in 1786, as we learn from the following quaint notice in the Char- leston Evening Gazette of February 3, 1786: "February 3d. 1786. Yesterday the Portuguese Jewish Congregation of this City, called "Beth Elohim Unveh Shallom" or the House of the Lord and Mansion of Peace, proceeded to their burying ground in Hampstead, in order to lay the F"oundation Stones of the Wall ; — after the usual prayers were performed. The first stone at the N. E. corner was laid by Mr. Joseph Da Costa. — The second ditto at the N. E., ditto, by Mr. Isaac Da Costa.— The third ditto at the S. W. ditto by Mr. Joseph Depallacios. — The fourth ditto, at the N. W. ditto by Mr. Joseph Benzakin. — The fifth ditto at the S. post of the gateway, by Samuel Da Costa. — And the sixth ditto at the N. ditto by Joseph Abendanone. A number of gentlemen attended the Ceremony, who expressed their satisfaction at the decent solemnity observed on the occasion." 104 It will be noticed from the above that the name of the congregation is referred to, not as "Beth Elohim," but as "Beth Elohim Unveh Shallom — a corroboration of the suggestion I made in my pamphlet reprints, that the name of the congregation was originally "Beth Elohim Unveh Shallom" and that it was called "Beth Elohim" for short. [See my "Jews of South Carolina" IV, 1783-1800, pp 8-9.] It is of course within the bounds of possibility that there were formerly two societies or congregations which afterwards amalgamated. There is no evidence for such a supposition, however, and it is exceedingly improbable. This burial ground has had a chequered history. After the death of Isaac Da Costa, who died intestate in 1783, the property passed into the possession of Joseph Da Costa his "survivor and administrator." In 1809, in consequence of a suit against the estate of Isaac Da Costa, this property was levied upon by the sheriff and was sold at public auction to the highest bidder. It was bought in by Isaac Da Costa, the younger, for .$500 sterling. [See Mesne Conveyance Records, Vol. X9, p. 394.] In 1809, it was conveyed by Isaac Da Costa to Eman- uel De La Motta, Jacob De La Motta and David Aben- danone, Trustees for the Portuguese Jews, "in trust for and purpose following, that is to say: in trust, that the said lot of land shall be kept as a burial ground for the said Portuguese Jews and to and for no other purpose or use whatever." In 1820, it was still the private burial grovmd of the Da Costa family — witness the following from the 'Con- stitution of Kaal Kado.sh Beth-Elohim" of 1820: "There shall be one congregational burial ground only, wherein all the deceased members of this congre- gation shall be interred, provided that this law shall net extend to any family place of interment already established * * * * This law considers the Burial Ground, heretofore called the Da Costa's, to be properly belonging to the family of Isaac Da Costa, Senr., deceased, into which his near relations are permitted to be interred and no other person, not even such persons as have relations already deposited there. * * * [Rule IX.] In 1828, Jacob De La Motta, the only survivor of the trustees appointed in 1809, having resigned his trust, other trustees were appointed: Abraham A. Massias, Abraham Ottolengui, Ralph Canter and Edwin Canter. 105 On September 27th, 1847, two of these trustees — Ralph Canter and Edwin Canter having meanwhile died, Abraham A. Massias and Abraham Ottolengui renounced their trusteeship and conveyed the cemetery •'to the President and Trustees of the Hebrew Syna- gogue of K. K. Beth Elohim, on the express condition that ten feet square within the said burial ground be perpetually reserved for the use of the said Abraham A. Massias for interment or otherwise as he may di- rect, next to or near the spot where were interred th« remains of the Salvador family, and also, that tei^ feet square will in the said burial ground be perpetu- ally reserved for the use of the said Abraham Otto- lengui, for interment or otherwise as he may direct, of any part he may select." The deed, is recorded in the office of Mesne Convey- ance, Vol X9, p. 396 sq. This cemetery is now used as a free burial ground for the Jewish poor, though there rest within its walls some of the most distinguished Jews who ever lived in South Carolina. Three of the flat slabs adjoining the tomb of the illustrious philanthropist Joseph Salva- dor, are missing. They were apparently stolen and may be now adorning another cemetery or serving as hearthstones in some of the shanties that abound in the neighborhood. These slabs once covered the re- mains of members of the Da Costa family and I have been able to identify the graves through the before mentioned will of Sarah Da Costa, who directs in the codicil above quoted, that "tombstones be purchased and placed over the graves of Mr. Moses Pimento, my mother Deah Pimento and my two sisters Mrs. I. Cohen and R. Da Costa." The following are all the inscriptions that remain in this old burying ground. Many of its tombstones are in pieces. To the Memory of ISAAC DA COSTA SQR. Dead but not forgotten. The Cemetery at Hanover Street. This private Jewish cemetery, whose origin ante- dates the nineteenth century, was practically unknown in Charleston till I called attention to it. How I came to find it I have told elsewhere. (See my Pamphlet Reprints "Old Jewish Cemeteries.") It is strange that this cemetery is not mentioned in the Constitution of Beth Elohim of 1820. This ground was conveyed in 1798 by Betzje Hen- rickson to Henry Moses, Solomon Moses, Meyer Derk- heim, Samuel Hyams, Benjamin Tores and Solomon Harby in trust "as a burying ground and place of in- terment for the said * * * and their descendants, and also such other person and persons professing Judaism, as the Trustees for the time being or a ma- jority of them shall for that purpose approve of." A further clause is added "that the Trustees above named and the survivors of them and their successors shall for ever be incapable of selling, disposing of, ali- enating, transferring, exchanging, dividing or giving up the premises aforesaid from the issue, descendants and families of the original trustees aforesaid, so as to exclude them from interment therein, to any person or persons, sectary or sectaries, society or societies, congregation or congregations of whatever description or denomination." This deed is recorded in the office of Mesne Convey- ance Vol W6, p. 397 sq.
