ALASKA, Salmon. — The erection of dams, barricades, or other obstructions in any of the rivers of Alaska, with the purpose or result of preventing or im- peding the ascent of salmon or other anadromous species to their spawn- ing grounds, is declared to be imlawful. ARIZONA. Who) Lavful to shoot Game. Elk, Deer, Antelope, Mountain Sheep, Mountain Goat, Ibex, may be killed from October 1 to February 1. Partridge, "Wild Turkey, Goose, Brant, Swan, Curlew, Plover, Snipe, Kail, Duck, from September 1 to March 1. Trapping or netting prohibited, except on one's own premises. Possession of above animals or birds during close season is prima facie evidence to convict, except such as are tamed or kept for show or curiosit}-. Quail, sometimes called Virginia Partridge, from October 1 to March 1. The netting or trapping of pinnated grouse, quail, or wild turkev prohibited during close season, but during open season is allowed on one's premises. Any of the above birds destroying fruit on one's premises may be killed dtiring close season. Possession and transportation during close season, of birds protected, are prima facie evidence to convict. Sunday shooting prohibited. Exportation of game prohibited for six j'ears. Nests of wild birds protected, except those of crows, blackbirds, hawks, owls, eagles, and birds of prey. Yell County. Partridge, Quail, may be killed from September 15 to March 15. Unlawful to trap the above birds during close season. lO American Game and Fish Laws. ■\Vild Turkey from August 15 to April l.i. AVild Deer from August 1 to February 1. Possession of above in close season prima facie evidence to convict. FISH. Game and fish public property, except fish in private ponds. The hunting, killing, and catching the same are declared to be a privilege. The exportation of fish from this State prohibited for six years. Seining or netting fish prohibited, except on waters wholly on the premises of persons using such device. Also lawful to use a very small seine not exceeding fifteen feet for catching very small fish, which may be caught to be used for bait, or for stocking other waters with fish, but for no other purpose. Also lawful to use a seine not exceeding sixty feet in length in any unnavigable stream or lake to catch fish for family use, or for picnics, and not for sale. Also lawful to place traps in unnavigable streams, provided such traps do not obstruct the free passage of fish in ascending or descend- ing such streams. CALIFORNIA. When Lawful to shoot Game. Quail, Partridge, Grouse, Wild Duck, or Kail may be killed from October 1 to March 1. Eggs of the above birds protected. Doves from June 1 to January 1. Deer, Elk, Mountain Sheep, or Antelope protected for two years. Possession of game in close season prima facie evidence to convict. Netting or snaring of quail, partridges, and grouse prohibited. Possession of bird snared or trapped ^jrima/acie evidence to convict. Mocking-birds and Blue Cranes, with eggs of same, protected at all times. Lake Merritt, Peralta. Wild Duck, Crane, Heron, Swan, Pelican, Snipe, or any wild animal or game of any kind cannot be shot within one hundred rods from high-water mark upon the land around the lake. Siskiyou County. Grouse, Sage Hen, or Prairie Chicken may be killed from August 1 to April 1. Qviail from October 15 to March 15. Mallard, Wood, and Teal Ducks and all other species of duck from September 15 to April 15. San Mateo County. The use of dogs for shooting or killing deer prohibited. San Francisco County. Mallard Duck, W^idgeon, Teal, Kedhead, Pintail, Gadwall, Wood Duck, English Snipe, may be killed from September 1 to IMarch 1. FISH. ^Vl^en Lawful to catch Fish. Any variety of Trout may be caught from April 1 to November 1. Catching of trout, except with hook and line, prohibited. California — Colorado. 11 Fresh Salmon from October 1 to August 31. Netting of salmon and shad on Saturday and Sunday prohibited. Counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Monterey, Alameda, Marin, Placer, and Nevada. Trout may he caught from April 1 to October 15. Seining or netting proliibited. Siskiyou County. Trout. — Unlawful to catch trout in this county at all times and seasons of the year. Eel River. Salmon may be caught from November 15 to September 15. San Francisco County. Striped Bass less than eight ounces in Aveight protected. Netting or seining is prohibited in all the counties. COLORADO. When Lawful to shoot Game. Partridgre, Pheasant, Prairie Chicken, Prairie Hen, or Grouse may be killed from September 1 to November 15. Quail from December 1 to January 1. Snaring of above birds is prohibited. Ducks, Brant, Geese, and Swans from September 1 to April 1. Insectivorous and song birds protected. Snaring prohibited. Possession of birds in close season 2)rima facie evidence to convict. Bison or Buffalo protected for ten years from March 26, 1889. Mountain Sheep protecte0, or 'imprisoned not less than ten nor more than sixty days or both. Persons unlawfully taking fish from hatching house or" breeding waters of said club shall be fined or imprisoned. Officers shall arrest without warrant. Farmington River: forbids nets above dam at Tarriffville, in Simsbuiy ; forbids M-eir and set nets with mesh less than five inches width in Windsor. Nets must remain open for thirty feet in or near centre of river. Forbids taking lamprey eels between May 20 and September 1. Fish Pond in Stratford: forbiils any but hook and line fishing. Gardner's Lake (Bozrah Pond), New London County: forbids fishing lietween April 1 and July 1. Goshen: forbids wilfully taking any pickerel from Dog Pond or Tyler Pond in March, April, or May. Hokanum River: forbids fishing from December 1 to April 1, in East Hartford, above the lower mill dam; and use of seine or net in the river at any time. Holly Pond, in Stamford and Darien : Chapter 51, Laws ISSO, forbids fishing' by any one except residents of the State. Hou- satonic River: forbids nets or seines, between junction with Nauga- tuck River and Ousatonic Water Co.'s dam, from April 1 to August 1; forbids any but hook and line or troll fishing between the Zoar Bridge and Ousatonic Water Co.'s dam. Kent: permits hook and line only in Hatch and Leonard Ponds; forbids fishing from November 1 to Alay 1. Killingly: forbids seine, draft, drag, or scoop net in any of the Chestnut Hill ponds or reservoii's, between June land November 1. Lake Kenosia in Danbury : forbids taking any fish between November 15 and April 1.5 following, until 1805. Lake Wononscopowoc : forbids taking any fish between November 15 and June 15. Long Island Sound : forbids constructing along the shore any weir or pound for taking shad or whitefish within seventy rods of' any other weir or pound. Long Meadow Pond, in Bethlehem, in Litchfield County: forbids seine or net. Meriden : forbids fishing in reservoir of tlie Meriden Cutlery Co., in December, January, February, March, April, or May. Mianus River: forbids taking any fish with net or seine. Middlefleld Reservoir: forbids taking fish between November 1 and May 1 following. Middletown : forbids fishing in reservoir of water works without written permit from two water commissioners; forbids fishing in Black Pond from December 1 to March 1. New Fairfield: forbids spearing in Squantz, Bearss, or Bull Ponds; forbids taking any fish from Ball's Pond between November 15 and April 15; forbids leaving set line or net in auv ponds at night. Newtown : forbids fishing or molestina: the spawn o"f fish in Taunton Lake, between February 1 and July 1. Norfolk: Act of March iv), 188i), forbids use of any spear, seine, net, trap, or contrivance of any kind other than a hook and" line for catching fish in Doolittle, Bene- dict, and Tobey Ponds. North Lake, in Hebron and Lebanon : for- bids t:Akino: any fish between November 15 and April 15. Paucatuck River: foi-bids weirs or pounds; limits the size of mesh in scoops. Quadic Reservoir: forbids taking fish between October 31 and Mav 1 following. Quinnebaug River: forbids scoop nets; forbids taking fish except with consent of proprietors who have stocked the river. Quinnipiac River: forbids the use of nets; weirs, etc., below Doolittle's dam. Ridgt?field : forbids taking fish from Mamanasco Pond without consent of owners. Round Pond in Ridgefield : for- bids taking fish of any kind from March 1 to July 1, or taking black bass of less than six inches at any time; forbids fishing on Sunday; owner of adjoining lands may arrest on sight. Sabetlie River and tributaries, including "West or" Arawana River: forbids fishinsr save with hook and line, except between March 1 and December 1; forbicls use of nets with mesh less than two and one half inches. Salem: forbids taking fish from Carr Pond without consent of owner. Salisbury: forbids use of seine or net in Bantam Lake, Mount Tom Pond, or "in waters of town of Salisbury; forbids spearing in Chapinville Ponds or Twin Lakes. Chapter 82, Laws 1889, Sect. 2, forbids taking fish from LakeWashinee (one of the Twin Lakes) before July, 1893; any person found with lines proceeding from a boat anchored therein shall be deemed guilty of a violation. "Sect. 3 forbids taking fish from Long Pond and Round Lake, on Mount Riga, between November 1 and May'l; any person found with fishing tackle shall be deemed guilty of violation. Salmon River or Cove, 3Iiddlesex County : forbids se"t net or tine mesh net, except between April 1 and June 15. Saugatuck Bay and River in Westport : forbids net with mesh less than" three fourths inch square from November 1 to January 1, or five eighths inch from Jan- uary 1 to April 15, or one and one half inches from April 15 to November 1. Sharon : forbids nets, seine, draft, or drag net, or spearing in Mudge Pond. Chapter 82, Laws 1889, Sect. 1, forbids taking fish from Mudge, Beardsley's, and Indian Ponds between February 1 and June 1. Sherman : forbid's use of spear, net, seine, draft, or drag net in Green Pond, Creek Pond, or Wood Creek; forbids taking any fish from Creek Pond between November 15 and April 15. Shetucket River: forbids seines and scoop nets. Stafford : forbids taking any fish from Orcuttville Reservoir Pond from November 1 to April l! Stamford Waters: forbids taking eels between March 20 and October 20. Ster- ling: forbids taking fish from Edwin G. Potter's Pond without con- sent of owner. Still River, in Brooktield, Fairfield County: for- bids taking fish by any means except with hook and line. Stonington: forbids taking ee'ls sj\ve only with hook and line or spear. Thames River: forbids, except for sliad, fyke, fish trap, fine net or seine with a mesh less than one and one fourth inches. Wallingford : forbids taking any fish from Community Lake or the creeks running into or connected "t\-ith it l)etween December 1 and April 1, inclusive. Waramaug Lake, Litchfield County: forbids fishing between April 1 and July 1; forbids use of seine, set net, or set line; possession of net or seine prima facie evidence. Bass of less than six inches must be returned to the" water. Waterford : forbids ticking eels save only with hook ami line, or spear. Westbrook: forbids taking eels save with hook and line, or spear. West Hill Pond, in New Hartford and Barkham- sted: forbids taking black bass between June 1 and July 1. West River: forbids the "use of any stationary net in West River, below Westville Bridge, or in New Haven Harbor within two miles of a line from high-water mark, from Oyster Point, in New Haven, to the old wharf in Connecticut — Delaware. 15 West Haven. AVest Thompson Reservoir : Act of May 21, It^Sii, lorl)ids any person, except the members of the Union Fishing Club of Thompson, anil the riparian proprietors, to take any fish witliout consent of said club or of owners of reservoir, or for the purpose of fishing, to enter without such consent upon land adjacent to reservoir. Whitneyville Lake or Pond : forbids taking any fish from this, or from any reservoir belonging to the New Haven Water Company, without written permission of the'direct- ors. Winchester: forbids taking any fish except suckers with spear in Long Lake or Little Pond. Woodstock: provides tliat no person sliall take any fish from Black Pond, nor from Woodstock Ponds or Little River, from the Perry Bridge to the dam of the Harris Twine and W'arp Co., except by a hook and line, nor from June 15 to November 1 in each year, except on Saturday, from noon to 9 o'clock, p. m., nor shall except in like manner take 'any fish from either of said ponds or said river, from November 1 to June 1.5, except on the two Saturdays of Decem- ber, January, and February, and from S A. M. to 5 P. M., noV shall take any fish through the ice on *3Iarlbovough Pond in Marlborough, or East Hampton Pond, except on the last Thursday of each month. But Chapter 49, Laws 1889, provides no person shall take any fish from Woodstock Lake or Little Pond, or from Little River between Woodstock Lake and the dam of the Putnam Water Company, in the town of Woodstock during the months of November, December, January, February, or March of any year. And adds : " That part of Sect. 2,416 of the General Statutes which prohil)its fishing in the above-named waters during certain parts of the year is repealed." DELAWARE, When Lav'ful to shoot Game. Nev^ Castle County. Partridge, Quail, Grouse, ^Voodcock, Hare, or Rabbit may be killed from November 15 to January 1. Kent and Sussex Counties. Partridge, Quail, Grouse, "Woodcock, Hare, or Rabbit may be killed from November 15 to Febi'uarj' 1. Ortolan, Rail, Reedbird, in any counties of this State, from September 1 to February 1. T\"ild Goodie, Swan, Brant, or any wild duck, except Summer or "Wood Duck, from October 1 to April 15. Possession of above birds during close season pr/mrt /ffc/e evidence to convict. Night shooting or netting or snaring of partridge, grouse, woodcock, or quail prohibited. Hunting wild fowl with a swivel or punt gun and artificial light or lantern is prohibited. Insectivorous birds and their nests (except on one's own premises) protected. Sunday shooting illegal. Sale of birds without license prohibited. Shipment of game, except ducks and geese, out of a county or State without license, is illegal, unless the shipper make oath tiiat the game was legally killed, and is not intended for sale or profit. Game protacted in snow. Non-residents. — It is unlawful for any person not a citizen of this State to hunt, kill, take, or destroy, sell or expose for sale, or have in his or her possession after the same have been killed, any partridge, grouse, quail, woodcock, rabbit or hare, reedljird, ortolan, or rail, unless he shall have first obtained a license from the Delaware Game Protective Association. 16 American Game and Fish Laws. Non-residents. — Tlie act of incorporation of the Delaware Game Protective Association provides: Sect. (1. That hereafter any person or persons, non-residents of this State, who shall kill, destroj^ hunt, or take any doe, buck, or fawn, or any sort of deer whatsoever, or shall kill, destroy, hunt, or take any partridge, moor fowl, ruffed grouse, com- monly called pheasant, pinnated grouse or prairie chicken, or any kind of grouse, quail, woodcock, Wilson or gray snipe, reedbird, railbird, black duck, gray duck, sprig-tail, teal duck, mallard, or any other kind of wild duck, or any wildgoose, swan, brant, or other wild fowl, or any hare or rabbit, at any time, or shall catch any speckled brook trout, or speckled river trout, or any black bass, or other game fish, at any time Avithin this State, without complying with the By-Laws of this Game Protective Association, then the peri^on or persons so offending shall for- feit and paj^ the sum of fifty dollars (#50) each for each and every oflence, and may be proceeded against in any county in the State, wherein such person or persons may; be arrested, or wherein such offence shall have been conmiitted, and in default of the payment of the forfeit money, with cost of prosecution, any person or persons shall lie in the common jail until the same shall be paid; one half of the forfeit money shall lie "for the benefit of the person prosecuting for the same, and the remainder paid to this Game Protective Association, and all Acts or parts of Acts incon- sistent with this Act are hereby repealed; provided, that nothing in this Act shall prevent residents of this State from taking game or fish, subject to existing laws of this State. Justices of the peace in and for this State shall have jurisdiction to hear and determine oflences against the provis- ions of this" Act. Sect. 7. The fee for membership in this society for non- residents shall be five dollars for the first year, and for each succeed- ing j^ear two dollars. For residents of this State the meml)ership fee shall be two dollars for each and every year. . . . Sect. 8. That the Secre- tary' may admit persons to mem))ership, by letter or otherwise, upon pay- ment of the membership fee, and shall issue to the person becoming a member of this society a certificate of membership, which shall hold good for one year from the date of the certificate. Sect. i). That every member of this society shall be empowered to make arrests without warrant of any person or persons who may be found violating nny of the provisions of this Act, or infringing upon any laAvs made for the p'rotection of game and fish in this State, and bring him or them before a magistrate for examina- tion. Sect. 10. Tliat the Secretary of this society shall, on or before the first day of July and the first of November of each and every year, furnish to each of the Directors in the several counties named herein, twenty-five printed lists, containing the names of non-resident meml)ers of this society with their places of residence. Sect. 11. That it shall be the duty of the Secretary of this Associaton to leave at least two copies of the lists^3f non- resident members of the Association at the times named in the foregoing section, with each justice of the peace in the several counties; and it shall be the duty of the' justices of the peace to file one of the lists of non- resident members Avith their records, and to publicly post the other lists at their offices or places of business as soon as they may receive them. Sect. 12. That any person loaning, transferring, or giving away his certificate of nieml)ership shall forfeit the same, and shall "not be readmitted to mem- bership in this society, except upon payment of the sum of twenty dollars to the Treasurer for a renewal of his certificate; and any person using a certificate of membership (not his own) for the purpose of enabling him to kill or take any game or fish mentioned in this Act, the person so ofi'end- in^ shall be subject to a fine of one hundred dollars for each and every oflence, to be collected in the same waj' and manner as prescrilied in the sixth section of this Act; and any person using a false or forged certificate of membership, or foi'ging or using a false certificate of membership, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and iipon conviction thereof, shall be fined and imprisoned in the discretion of the court. Sect. 14. That the funds obtained from non-residents for certificates of membership shall be used for no other purposes than to pay legitimate expenses of the society, and for the pui'pose of stocking the State with game or fish, as the Directors may from year to j'ear determine. The Bj^-Laws of the Delaware Game Protective Association provide that: Any person or persons, non-residents of this State, wishing to kill, destroy, hunt, or take, at any time, any game as provided for in the sixth section of the "Act incorporating tliis Association," shall first become members of this Association by payment of the membership fee to the Secretary, receiving a certificate of membcrsliip signed by the President Delaware — District of Columbia— Florida. 17 aud Secretary, and sealed with the corporate seal of saiil Association. Non-resident candidates for niemljership must be proposed in writing by a member of this Association, and the same countersigned by one of the Board of Directors. The fee for memljersliip in this Association for non- residents shall be live dollars (s?.")) for the first year, and for each succeed- ing year two dollars (!!?2). Each member shall receive from the Secretary a certilicate of membership, said certificate to be issued for the term of one year, and sealed with the corporate seal of the Association, and signed by the President and Secretary. FISH. Black Bass,' Trout, from waters of New Castle County, may be caught from June 1 to November 1. Fish must measure more than six inches in length. Thei-e is no prohibition of hook and line fishing witliin the limits of the District at any season of the year. FLORIDA, Non-residents. — It is unlawful for any non-resident of this State to hunt for game of any kind or description, for the purpose of conveying the game killed or caught beyond the limits of the State, without first ob- taining a license from the clerk of tiie county in Avhich he proposes hunting, for which he shall pay the sum of twenty-five dollars; and in case there be a company desiring to hunt together under the same license, they all inay be "included in one license by paying an additional five dollars"^ each ; 1)ut not more than six persons shall be included in the same license. Violation a misdemeanor, penalty, fine of $.50 to ••? .500, one half to informer. The drying, salting, curing, packing, or caging game shall be prima facie evidence of intent to ship. Nests of sea birds and birds of plumage protected. 18 American Game and Fish Laws. FISH. Fish Traps. — It is unlawlul tor any person to maintain any perma- nent trap or snare, or any other device that is permanent, for tlie" purpose of catchina: flsli in any of the lakes or streams in this State, or to use any seine 'or drag net for the purpose of catching fish in such lakes or streams during the months of February, INJarch, April, May, June July, August, and September of each year. Any person may fish in his own waters in any manner thought proper. Food Fishes. — It is unlawful for any one to catch or capture anj- of the followinof fish, Mullet, trout, redfish, sheepshead, pompano, mackerel, bluefish, red snapper, grouper, or juarell, within the waters under the jurisdiction of the State of Florida for the pui'pose of making oil, fer- tilizer, and compost therefrom. Unlawful to engage in catching fish for roes only, or turtle for eggs onl}-. GEORGIA Hunting deer by fire at night prohibited, except on one's premises or with full consent of the owner of lands hunted on. Sunday shooting prohibited. Dynamite and other explosives, for purpose of killing fish, is prohibited. Dams, traps, and obstructions for catching fish prohibited, unless the main channel of stream is left open for a space of ten feet at low- water mark, unobstructed for the free passage of fish up or down such stream. GAME LAWS IN CERTAIN COUNTIES. Bullock County. —Unlawful to catch, kill, pursue, sell, or possess any wild turkey, wild duck, partridge, or quail between April 1 and October 1; or to hunt or fish on lands of another without written consent of owner after notice has been given. Bvirke County. — Similar to Richmond County Act given below, save that it forbids killing wild turkeys and parti'idges between April 1 and October 1 ; and forbids possession or sale of summer-duck or dove between April 1 and August 15. Colquit County. — Unlawful to shoot or destroy any insectivorous bird at any time, or any deer, partridge, wild turkey, or wild duck between March 1 and October 1. Emanuel County. — Unlawful to hunt or fish on any lands of anothei', whether enclosed or unenclosed, without written consent of owner. Glynn County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap or kill, sell or possess, wild deer, wild turkey, partridge, or quail between April 1 and November 1; or at any time to destroy nest or eggs of wild turkey, quail, or wild duck. Habersham County. — Unlawful to kill or pursue wild deer between April 1 and October 1; or wild turkey between Maj'^ 15 and September 15. Houston County. — Unlawful to kill any insectivorous or singing birds, except such as are destructive of crops, or to kill, sell, or possess any par- tridge, snipe, or wild.turkey between April 15 and October 1. Jasper County. — Unlawful to shoot or snare or in any way kill any deer, wild turkey, or partridge between March 15 and October 15. Macon County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap, or kill in anyway, or to sell or possess any deer, wild turkey, wild duck, or partridge, between April 1 and Noveml)er 1; or dove between April 1 and November 1; or rob nests of said birds at anytime; or poison any partridge or dove; or snare, net, or trap partridge on lands of another. Georgia. 19 Madison County. — Unlawful to either destroy the nests of mocking- birds, or rob them of their eggs or young birds. Montgomery County. — Unlawful to shoot, kill, trap, or destroy any wild deer, wild turkev, wild duck, partridge, quail, snipe, or dove between April 1 and October 1. Penalty, line not to exceed $5(tu or jail six months. Possession or offering for sale shall he prima facie evidence of unlawful killing. Unlawful to desti'oy any mocking-bird, redlnrd, nonpareil, or any insectivorous bird; or to trap or net any wild turkey, partridge, or quail, or destroy their eggs or nests. Murray County. — Unlawful for non-residents of the county to camp- hunt for wild game. Newton County. — Unlawful to shoot, snare, or in any way destroy, or sell, or have in possession, any wild turkey, wild duck, partridge or quail, or mocking-bird, between April 1 and October 1 ; or dove between May 1 and August I; or to destroy nests or eggs of said birds. Oconee County. —Unlawful to trap or destroy at anytime any insectivorous birds save those destructive of crops; or any partridge, wild turkey, or wild duck, between April 1 and Octoljer 15. Pulaski County. — Unlawful to hunt or fish without consent of owner or agent, when land has been posted. Kabun County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap, or destroy any deer between April 1 aiid October 1, or wild turkey between May 15 and Sep- tember 1. Kichniond County. — Unlawful for any person who shall hunt, wound, kill, or take any fawn at any time. Unlawful for any person who shall in anv manner hunt, wound, kill, or take any buck or doe deer except between 0"ctober 1 and December ;n; or in any other manner than with dog or by shooting, in the daytime. Unlawful for any person who shall in any manner hunt, wound, kill, or take any wild turkey or any par- tridge between April 1 and October 15, or anj^ summer-duck or any dove, between April land July l,or any woodcock between January 1 and August 15. Unlawful at any time or in any manner to net, snai'e, or trap, or set any net, snare, or trap for any buck deer, doe deer, fawn, wild turkey, partridge, summer-duck, dove, woodcock, English duck, teal, snipe, plover, or any wild game bird, or poison or set out poison for any par- tridge or dove, or disturb, injure or destroy the nest of any wild turkey, partridge, summer-duck, dove, or woodcock, or rob the nest of any of said birds of its eggs or young, or buy or sell, or offer to sell, or have in his possession the eggs oruntledged young of any of said birds. Screven County. — Unlawful to hunt or fish on lands of another with- out owner's written consent, whether lands enclosed or unenclosed. Telfair County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap, or destroy any deer, wild turkey, wild duck, partridge, snipe, or dove between March 15 and October 1. Sale or possession irrima facie evidence. Unlawful to destroy at any time any mocking-bird, redbird, nonpareil, or other insectivorous bird. Unlawful to hunt or fish on lands of another without having obtained written consent from owner or agent. Troup County. — Unlawful to shoot, ti-ap, or desti'oy any deer, wild turkey, or partridge between April 1 and October 1; or any dove between April"! and August 1 ; or any mocking-bird at any time ; or to destroy eggs or nests of said birds, or to net partridges except on one's own land or by permission of owner. AVasliington County. — Unlawful to hunt or fish or otherwise trespass on the lands of another after notice by owner or agent. Wayne County. — Unlawful to hunt or fish on posted lands of another Avithout owner's consent. White County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap, or destroy any deer between January 1 and September 1; or wild turkey between May 1 and September 1. Wilkes County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap, or destroy, or sell or possess, any wild turkey, partridge, or mocking-bird between April 1 and September 1, or at any time destroy their eggs or nests. AVilkinson County. — Unlawful to shoot, trap, or destroy any wild turkey between April'l and November 1; partridge between May 1 and October 1; or dove between March 15 and July 15. 20 American Game and Fish Laws. The possession of more than one moose, two caribou, and three deer between October 1 and January 1 is prohibited. Transportation and exportiition during the close season prohibited. Game seized to be returned when bond is given. Ducks from Septemljer I to April 1. Kviffed Grouse or Partridge, Woodcock, from September 1 to Decem- ber 1. Quail from October 1 to December 1. Prairie Chicken from September 1 to January 1. Plover from August 1 to May 1. The possession or sale of more than thirty of each variety of birds above named during open season is unlawful. The transportation of above birds from place to place in open season is prohiljited unless open to view, tagged and labelled with owner's name and ;i(<'t)nn>anied by him. The transportation at any one time of more than fifteen of any one variety of birds above named, as the property of one person, is unlawful. Mink, Beaver, Sable, Otter, Fisher, from October 15 to May 1. Muskrat from March 1 to May 20. Insectivorous birds and nests protected, except English sparrows and hawks. Snaring or trapping of duck, quail, grouse, partridge, and woodcock prohibited. Sunday shooting prohibited. The governor may commission persons to take Ijirds for scientific pur- poses, not to exceed ten at one time. FISH. When Lawful to catch Fish. Salmon, Shad. — No salmon, shad, or other migratory fish shall be taken or fished for within five hundred yards of any fishery, dam, or mill- race. Maine. 25 Salmon may be caught from April 1 to July 15. except tliat between the 15th day of July and the 15th of September it "is lawful to fish for and take salmon by the ordinary mode, with rod and single line, Ijut not otherwise. Smelts. — No smelts shall be taken or fished for in tidal waters except by hook and line, between the first days of April and October. All weirs for the capture of smelt-i shall be opened by April, but no smelts caught in such weirs after the first day of April shjill be sold or ofl"ered for sale in this State, nor shall smelts caught in any manner between the first dav of April and the first day of October following be offered for sale, sold, or shipped from the Stjite under a penalty of twenty-five dollars for each offence; provided, however, that dip nets may be used lietween tlie first and twenty-fifth days of April; provided, further, that this section does not apply to smelts taken in the Androscoggin River above the Merrv Meet- ing Bay bridge, between the first days of Octoljer and November, nor to smelts taken in the Penobscot River "and its tributaries, between the first and fifteenth days of April. Landlocked Salmon, Trout, and Togue from May 1 to October 1, except on the St. Croix River and all the waters in Kennebec County, where fishing is allowed from May 1 to September 15. However, during February, March, and April, citizens of the State may fish for and take landlocked salmon, trout, or togue, and convey the 'same to their own houses, but not otherwise. ^Vhite Perch from July 1 to April 1. The po'^session, sale, and transportation during close season of above fish prohibited. Fishing with hook and line only. Netting or seining prohibited except in tide waters. The catching of sea salmon or landlocked salmon, less than nine inches in length, or trout less than five inches in length, is unlawful. The possession at any one time for purpose of transportation of land- locked salmon, trout, or togue, weighing more than fiftv pounds in all, is unlawful. Black Bass from July 1 to April 1. Nets. — No net, other than a dip net, the meshes of which are smaller than one incli square in the clear, shall be used in any waters frequented by migratory fishes, except the St. Croix River, between the first days of April and October. Shooting upon any island within salt waters prohibited, unless by consent of owner or occupant. Notice must be posted on the banks in a conspicuous place. FISHING IN CERTAIN WATERS. Anonymous Pond.— Chapter 402, Laws 1889. Fishing for or taking togue, otherwise known as Thompson Pond trout, from Anonymous Pond in Harrison, is hereby prohibited for the term of six years from" the passage of this Act [under a "penalty of 82 for each of said fish taken.] Blue Mountain Pond. — Chapter 371, Laws 1889. All persons are for- bidden from taking fish of any kind from Blue Mountain Pond, in Franklin County, between October 1 and May 1 following of each vear. [Penalty, fine o"f not more than f 10 for each oiffence, and $1 for eaeli fish taken, one, half to complainant.] Chase Pond. — Chapter 326, Laws 1889. No trout shall be taken in any manner from Chase Pond in the town of Moscow, in Somerset County, during the term of five years from the passage of this Act. [Penalty, fine of not more than $10 for each offence, and $1 for each fish taken.] Dutton, Grindstone, Tufts Ponds. — Chapter 469, Laws 1889. All persons are prohibited from taking fish of any kind from Tufts, Grind- stone, or Dutton Ponds, or any of its tributaries, in the town of Kingfield, in Franklin County, between October 1 and May 1 of each year for the term of five years. [Penalty, fine of $5 for each fish, one half "to complainant.] Four, Beaver, Long: Ponds. — Chapter 206, Laws 1887 (as amended by Chapter 475, Laws 1889). No person shall take, catch, kill, or fish for 26 American Game and Fish Laws. any locked salmon, trout, or any other fish, in any of the Four Tond, Beaver or Long Ponds^, or other waters in townships Dand E in Franklin County, between the first day of October and the first day of May following, in each year. [Penalty, a fine of $10 for each offence, and $1 for each fish, one half to <;omplainant.] Great, Sliorey's, Staple's, Parker's Brooks.— Chapter 405, Laws 1889. All persons are forbidden to take trout or pickerel in any manner from the Great Brook, Shorey's, Staple's, and Parker's Brooks, in the town of Elliot, county of York, for a term of four years. From and after said time it shall l>e lawful to take fish from said brooks between the twentieth (lay of May and the twentieth day of July only, each year. [Penalty, a fine of $iO for each offence, and $1 for each fish, one half to complainant.] Kennebec County. — Chapter 447, Laws 1889. The taking of pickerel in the waters of Kennebec County in any other way than by hook and line is prohibited. [Penalty, fine of $10, one half to complainant.] Kneeland Pond. — Chapter 472, Laws 1889. All persons are hereby prohibited from taking fish of any kind from Kneeland Pond, so called, in the town of Albany, county of Oxford, for the period of four years. [Penalty, fine not exceeding $10 for each offence, and $1 for each fish, one half to complainant.] Letter B Pond. — Chapter 480, Laws 1889. The Oxford Club sha'l have the right to erect and maintain a dam in the outlet to Letter B Pond, in the town of Upton, in this State, for the purpose of protecting and culti- vating trout in said pond. No person shall take, catch, or fish for any fish in said pond between the first days of October and May of each "year. [Penalty, a fine of $10 to $30, and $2 for each fish, one half to pros- ecutor.] Liittle Sebaffo Pond. — Chapter 466, Laws 1889. No pickerel shall be taken from Little Sebago Pond or any of its tributaries, in the towns of Windham and Gray, in 'the county of Cumberland, with hook and line, or in any other way, "between the first day of October and the first day of June following, in each year, for a term of five years commencing October 1, 1889. [Penalty, fine not to exceed $10 for first offence, and $1 for each fish, one half to "complainant.] l^ong and "Weeks' Ponds. —Chapter 470, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. All persons are hereby prohiljited from taking fish of any kind from Long Pond and Weeks' Pond and their tributaries, in the town of Parsonsfield, in York County, for the term of five years. [Sect. 2. Penalty, fine not to exceed $10, one half to complainant.] Moosehead Lake. — Revised Statutes, 188.5. Sect. 1. No person shall take, catch, kill, fish for, or destroy any trout, landlocked salmon, or othei- fish in the Misery and Saccatien or Socatian Rivers which empty into Moosehead Lake, from the tenth day of September to the first day of May. Sect. 2. Any person who shall violate the provisions of this Act shall forfeit and pay the sum of twenty-five dollars for the attempt, and one dollar for each and every tmut, landlocked salmon, or other fish so taken, caught, killed, or destroyed, to be recovered by complaii-t before any trial justice, one half to the complainant and one half to the county where proceedings are commenced. Moose Pond. — Chapter 404, Laws 1889. That any person or persons who are found guilty of setting hooks for the purpose of catching pickerel in Moose Pond, in the town of Mount Vernon, Kennebec County, for the term of five vears from the passage of this Act, shall upon conviction of the same, before a court of proper jurisdiction, pay into the treasury of said county a fine of one dollar for each hook so set. Nevers', Carsley, Rogers', Tingley, and L,akln Brooks. — Chapter 414, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. All persons art forbidden from fishing in or taking fish, suckers and smelts excepted, from the waters of Nevers' Brook, in Sweden, in the county of Oxford, Carsley and Rogers' Brooks, in Bridgton, Tingley Brook, in Bridgton and Naples, and Lakin Brook, in Sebago, and their tributaries in the county of Cumberland, for tlie term of six years. [Sect. 2 Penalty, a fine of $10 for each offence, and $1 for each fish,' one half co complaina'nt, and one half to any fish and game protection society in Cumberland County.] Parker's Pond. —Chapter 406, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. Fishing for and taking of landlocked salmon from Parker's Pond in the towns of Mount Maine. 27 Vernon and Fayette is hereby prohiljitetl for five years from the passage of this bill [under a penalty of $5 for each landlocked salmon caught in violation.] Parlin Pond. — Chapter 332, Laws 1889. Any person who shall kill or destroy any trout in Parlin Pond, its tributaries or outlet, by the use of giant powder, or any other explosive, or shall in any other way wantonly waste and destroy trout iu and around said waters, shall for each offence be punished by fine not exceeding twenty dollars, or by imprison- ment not more than twenty days. Perkins' and Nute Brooks. — Chapter 372, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. All persons are forbidden fishing for or taking trout or any other fish from Perkins' and Nute Brooks, so called, and their tributaries, in the town of Woodstock, in the county of Oxford, for the period of three years. [Sect. 2. Penalty, a fine of f 10 for each offence, and $1 for each fish, one half to complainant.] Potter's Pond. —Chapter 467, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. No fish of any kind shall be taken from Potter's Pond and its tributaries, in the town of Carthage, in Franklin County, from the first day of October to the first day of May following, of each year. [Sect. 2. Penalty, fine of $10 for each offence, and .f 1 for each fish, one half to complainant.] Kangeley Lakes and Tributaries. — Chapter 21, Special Laws of 1881. Sect. 1. No person shall take, catch, fish for, or destroy any trout or land- locked salmon in the Kennebago, Kangeley, Cupsuptic, Mooselucmaguntic, Mollychunkamunk, and AVelokeunebacook Lakes, or in the streams fiowing into or connecting said lake->, during the months of February, March, and April of each year. Sect. 2. No person shall use spawn as bait for fishing in any of the waters named in the foregoing section during the month of September of each year. Sect. 3. Any person who shall violate the provisions of this Act shall forfeit and pay the sum of ten dollars for the attempt, and one dollar for each and every trout and landlocked salmon so taken, caught, killed, or destroyed, to be recovered by complaint before any trial justice, one half to the complainant, and one'half to the town in wliich the complaint is made. Revised Statutes, 1885, Chapter 451. Sect. 1. No person shall take, catch, kill, fish for, or destroy any trout or land- locked salmon in the Rangeley Stream between the mouth of the Kenne- bago Stream and the head of the i-^land at the eddy, so called, in said Rangeley Stream, from the first day of July to the first day of May; nor in that portion of said stream fi-om the head of said island to the Rangeley dam, atany time ; nor in the South Bog Stream which empties into Rangeley Lake, above the dead water at the mouth of said stream, fi-om the first day of July to the first day of 3Iay; nor in the Bemis Stream which empties into Mooselucmaguntic Lake, above the blue water, so called, at the mouth of said stream, from the first day of July to the first day of May ; nor in the Cupsuptic Stream which empties into the Cupsuptic Lake, between the foot of the first falls towards its mouth and its source, from the first day of July to the first day of May; nor in the Kennebago Stream between the foot of the first falls towards its mouth and the upper falls at the outlet of Kennebago Lake, from the first day of September to the first day of May. Sect. 2. Any person Avho shall violate the provisions of this" Act shall forfeit and pay the sum of twenty-five dollars for the attempt and one dollar for each and every trout or landlocked salmon so taken, caught, killed, or destroyed, to be recovered by complaint before any trial justice, one half to the complainant and one half to the town where the complaint is made. Round Mountain Lake. — Chapter 316, Laws 1889. All persons are prohibited from taking fish of any kind from Round Mountain Lake or any of its tributaries, in township" number two, range five, in Franklin County, between October 1 and May 1 following of each year, for the term of five years. [Sect. 2. Penalty, fine of $5 for each fish, one half to complainant.] Royal's River. — Chapter 436, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. Fishing or taking fish from Royal's River and its tril)utaries in the town of New Gloucester, between Sabbath Day Pond and Jordan's mills in said New Gloucester, is prohibited for the spa"ce of six years. [Sect. 2. Penalty, a fine not exceed- ing $10 for each offence, and $l"for each fish.] Spectacle Ponds. — Chapter 343, Laws 1889. Sect. 1. Maryland. 29 Xou-residents prohibited from sliooting, witliout consent of owner of land upon wliich said non-re-ident may hunt. Unlawful for non-resident to shoot unless he obtains a license from clerk of Circuit Court. Such license is for one year, and costs $6.50. Non-residents. AVild Fowl. — It is unlawful for non-residents to shoot or trap upon the waters of Patuxent River, its tributaries or marshes, any goose, duck, snipe, ortolan, or other wild fowl. ' Jt is unlawful to shoot wild fowl from any booby blind or brush blind on the waters of Severn River in Anne Arundel County, except on Mondays, AVednesdays, and Fridays, and on the waters of Magothy River in said "county, excep't on Tuesdays and Fridays ; or on the waters of South River in said county on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays of each week. Before any person shall place any booby blind or brush blind in or upon said waters and shoot therefrom, he must obtain a license from the clerk of the Circuit Court of Anne Arundel County, for which, includ- ing the clerk's fee, 82.50 must be paid : but any owner of a blind properly licensed may extend the privilege to any person to shoot therefrom on the days specified. Any person who shall violate any of the foregoing pro- visions is punishable by a fine of not less than $h nor more tlian 8"20 for each offence, so far as the same applies to Severn and ISIagothy Rivers, and a fine not to exceed $25 for each offence so far as the same is applicable to South River, and an additional fine of $5 to be imposed upon the owner of any blind wlio shall establish the same at a point nearer than three hundred yards from a blind already licensed, for each week said blind shall remain after due notice has been given to remove the same by the owner of the blind first established. Any person who shall trespass upon any blind established and licensed by this Act, by shooting at wild fowl from the same without the consent of the owner of said blmd, he or they shall, on conviction, be fined not less than SIO nor more than 820, to stand committed until fine is paid. The informer is entitleil to one half of all fines. All licenses begin on the 1st day of May, and continue only for one year from date thereof; and no one person shall be alloAved to license more than one blind in any, one season, and if more than one Ijlind is obtained by any person the same shall be revoked. Woodcock from June 10 to January 1. Kail, Keedbird, Pheasant, from September 5 to February 1. Any person found shooting with dog or gun upon private propertv is unlawful. Possession of above birds during close season prima facie evidence to convict. Wild Fowl. Elk and Bohemia Rivers. — Sect. 361. It shall be law- ful for the bona fide citizens of Cecil County to shoot wild fowl froni sink boxes in the waters of the Elk and Bohemia Rivers and their tributaries in said county, from the first day of November in each year until the thirty-first day of March next succeeding, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of each Aveek, upon obtaining a license so to do, as provided in the succeeding section. [Sects. 362-364. The license shall be issued by the clerk of the Circuit Court ; fee, $10. Consent of oAvner of land boi'dering the water must be obtained before the sink box can be placed. Applicant must make oath that he will comply with Sects. 361-364. Name or number must be conspicuously painted on the sink box.] Sassafras River. — Sect. 371. It shall be lawful for 6on« /(/e citizens of Cecil and Kent Counties to shoot wild fowl from sink boxes in the waters of the Sassafras River, in said counties [during the same season and on the same days of the week as prescribed in Sect. 361, upon taking out licenses therefor; fee, flO.] Chesapeake Bay. Season for Wild Fowl. — Sect. 380. All that part of the Chesapeake Bay and its waters lying northward of the following line, viz., beginning at the lighthouse on Turkey Point in Cecil County, and drawn Avestward to a point half a mile north of the most northerly part of Spesutia Island, thence continuing said line still westAvard Avithin half a mile of and north of the northern end of said island and the adjacent mainland until it reaches the shore in Harford County, at or near Oaking- ton, shall be subject to the operation of the twenty-tAvo sections folloAving. Sect. 381. The season for shooting Avild fowl northAvard of the line de- scribed in the preceding section shall begin on the first day of November in each and every year, and continue until the thirty-first day of March next succeeding in each and everj' year hereafter, and it shall not be laAvful for any person to kill or shoot at Avild fowl northAvard of said line, except from ashore, and southward of a line draAvn east from Point Concord lighthouse in Harford County to Carpenter's Point on the western shore of Cecil County, at any other time. [Penalty, a fine of $50 to f 100.] Sect. 382. It shall be lawful' to shoot teal ducks, mallards, black ducks, bald pates, and all other ducks, known as marsh ducks, in any manner other than by SAvivel gun, or big gun, from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset every day, from the fifteenth day of August to the first day of October of each year, on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, lying and being in the bounds described by Sect. 380. Night Shooting. — Sect. 383. No person shall shoot or kill, or shoot at an A" AVild I'oavI, in, on, or over the Avaters lying northward of the line de- scribed in Sect. 380, in the night-time, Avith gun of any size or description whatever. [Penalty, a fine of $100 to $500.] Shooting from Boats. — Sect. 384. No person shall, at any time, either in the day or night time, shoot or kill, or shoot at, any wild foAvl in, on, or over the Avaters lying northward of the line described in Sect. 380, from any vessel, boat, float, canoe, sneak boat, sink boat, or any other Maryland. 31 craft of any kind or description whatever, within one quarter of a mile of any shore in Cecil or Harford Counties. [Penalty, a fine of $50 to $100.] Gunning Points. — [Sect. 385. Landowners may reserve gunning points.] Big: Guns. — Sect. 386. No person shall kill or shoot at wild waterfowl in, on, or over the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, from any boat, box, or vessel of any kind or description whatever, with any big or swivel gun, or any kind of gun which cannot be conveniently discharged from the shoulder at arm's length, and without a rest. [Penalty, a line of $100 to $500.] Shooting Days. — Sect. 387. No person shall gim for or after wild waterfowl, or shoot at or kill the same, northward of the line named and described in Sect. 380, but three days in each week, until the tirst day of January, during the season for shooting wild fowl, as fixed by Sect.*381, and those days, prior to the first day of January, shall be Monday, Wednesday, and Fridaj^; and on and after the first day of January, shall be Monday, AVednesday, Friday, and Saturday, until the end of the season for shooting wild fowl as aforesaid; and each of said days shall compre- hend the time intervening between one hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset, of each day, and no more, and is not to include any part or pei'iod of a night. [Penally, a fine of $50 to $100.] Sink Box, Sneak Boat, License. — Sects. 388, 389. No person shall use any sink box or sneak boat of any description on the aforesaid waters for shooting wild fowl, without having first obtained a license from the clerk of the Circuit Court for Harford or Cecil County ; license good from November 1 to March 31; but shall not authorize the shooting of wild fowl therefrom within a less distance than one quarter of a mile of any shore in Harford or Tjecil Counties, or southward of the line particularly de- scribed in Sect. 380. Applicant for license must make oath that he is a bona fide citizen of the State, and will comply with the provisions of these sections. The number of the license must he conspicuously painted on the sink box or sneak boat. License fee for sink box, $5; for sneak boat, $20. Penalty for using said box or boat without a license, a fine of $.50 to $100. No person holding a license to gun for or after wild waterfowl shall, during the gunning season as fixed by Sect. 381, be allowed to anchor or otherwise make stationary any sink box, sneak boat, or any other vessel or craft, on the waters lying northward of the line named in Sect. 380, on any Tuesday, Thursday^ Saturday, or Sunday prior to the first day of January, of said gunning season, and on and after the said first day of 'January, on any Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, nor until the hour of five o'clock A. M. on the moi'ning of the day next succeeding each of said days above specified; and no person holding a license as above described and engaged in gunning for wild waterfowl shall go on or over said waters with sink box, sneak boat, or other vessel or craft before the hour of five o'clock A. M. on the morning of the daj^ next succeeding each of said days as above specified. [Penalty, a fine of $25 to $.50; one half to officer making arrest; and violator and "craft and entire gunning outfit shall be deprived of the rights granted by the license for the next three succes- sive gunning days.] Netting. — Sect. 404. No person shall at any time take, catch, or trap, or attempt to take, catch, or trap, wild waterfowl, by net^ of any kind, within the Chesapeake Bay or any of its tributaries within Cecil, Harford, or Baltimore Counties, or within any of the waters of said bay lying north- ward of a line drawn westerly from the most southerly point of Cecil County bordering on said bay", to the most southerly point of Baltimore Count"y bordering on said ba'y. [Sect. 405. Penalt"y, $.50 to $200, or in default, 60 days' imprisonment. Sect. 406. .Justices of the peace of Cecil, Harford, and" Baltimore Counties shall have concurrent jurisdiction. Sect. 408. Trout may be caught from April 1 to August 1.5. Trout may be caught at any time in waters upon one's own land. Seining or netting is prohitiited. Fishing in private ponds unlawful after notice posted. Potomac River. — Public General Laws, Art. 39, Sect. 40. It shall not be lawful for any person to catch or destroy, or to attempt to catch or destroy, any fish in the waters of the Potomac River or tributaries above the place commonly known as the " Little Falls " of the Potomac during the month of May, except shad and herring, which may be caught at any time. Sect. 41. It shall not be lawful bnaiiv person to catch or destroy, or to attempt to catch or destroy, fish in the waters of the Potomac River'^and tributaries above the said "Little Falls" of the Potomac at any time bv means of sledging, or by trot or out lines set with live bait; nor shall it be lawful to catch or destroy, or attempt to catch or destroy, any black bass or salmon in any manner between the first day of May'and the first day of June, in each year; nor shall it be lawful for any person to kill fish with poison or drug or l)y the explosion of powder or other substance at any time. Nantucket, Tuckeriiuck, Miiskeget, firavelly Islands. — Who- ever shoots at or kills any wild fowl or any of the so-called shore, marsh, or beach liirds from boats* in the harbor and'great ponds of Nantucket, and the waters in and around the islands of Tuckernuck, Muskeget, and the Gravelly Islands, shall be punished for each offence by a fine of twenty dollars. Plymouth, Kingston, Dvixbury. — Whoever, within the limits of Plymouth Harbor or Bay, so called, including the waters adjacent to the towns of Plymouth, Kingston, Duxbury, shoot's at or kills a l)lack duck 1»y the use of aiiy gun having a larger bore than that commonly known as No. 8, or pursues a ))lack duck by the use of any boat or other 'floating device whatever, sliall be punished by a fine of not less than five nor more than twenty-five dollars. Dukes County. — Whoever knowingly introduces into the county of Dukes County and liberates therein any fox or raccoon shall be punished for each offence by a fine of not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than fifty dollars, or by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding thirty days, or by both such fine and imprisonment. FISH. When Lawful to catch Fish. Salmon may be caught fi'om May 1 to August 1. Salmon less than one foot in length ]n-ohibited. Any other mode of taking salmon than by artificially or naturally baited hook or line prohibited. This provision applies to pickerel. Trout, Landlocked Salmon, Lake Trout, from April 1 to September 1; except in counties of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden, Avhere such time will be between April 1 and August 1. Black Bass from July 1 to December 1, except this limitation does not apply to tlic Connecticut River or its tributaries. Smelt from June 1 to March 15. Anj' other mode of taking smelt than by artificially or naturally baited hook or line prohibited. This provision \loes not apply to Bristol, Barnstable, or Dukes Counties. The drawing, setting, stretching, or using a drag net, set net, purse net, or seine in any pond, prohiliited. Possession of game or fish dui'ing prohibited time is irrima facie evi- dence to (•onvi<'t. Fishing on Sunday is prohibited. Shad, Alewives. — Whoever takes shad or alewives, except in the Con- necticut, Taunton Great, Nemasket, and Merrimac Rivers and their tributaries, in any other manner than by naturally or artificially l)aited hook and hand liiie, on any day of the week but Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and'whoever takes shad exce]>t in the Connecti- cut River, or alewives, between the fifeenth day of June and the first day ot March, shall forfeit for each shad five dollars, and for each alewife twenty-five cents. Lobsters. — Whoever sells or offers for sale or has in his possession a lobster less than ten and one half inches in length, measuring from the extremitv of the bone projecting from the head to the end of the bone of the middle fli])per of the tailof the lobster, extended on its back its natural length, shall forfeit five dollars for every such lobster; and in all i)i(>sccutions under this section, the possession of any lobster not of the required length shall be prima facie evidence to convict. Any mutilation of a lobster affecting its measurement shall be prima facie evidence tliat the lobster is less than ten and one half inches in length. Massachusetts. 37 Whosoever catches and mutilates a lobster by severino- the tail from the body before said lobster is cooked, shall be punished by a tine of five dollars for each offence; and in all prosecutions under this Act, the possession, by a person engaged in catching- or taking lol)sters, of the tail of any uncooked lobster so severed from the body, shall be prima facie evidence to convict. Whoever, during any season of the yeai', "catc-hes or takes, and whoever has in his possession in this Common- wealth, with intent to sell, any female lobster bearing eggs, shall be punished for each offence by a tine ot not less than ten nor more than one hundred dollars, or by imprisonment in the house of correction for not less than one nor more than three months; provided, however, that a person catching and taking any such lobster and immediately returning it alive to the waters from which it was taken, shall not l)e subject to such itenalty ; and provided, also, that this Act shall not apply to lo1)sters spawning in lobster cars, if they are immediately returned alive to the waters as aforesaid. Fish in Certain "Waters. Brandt Island. — In town of Mattapoi- sett, taking fish by any other means than hook and line within fifty rods of said island is unlawful, without written consent of Mattapoisett selectmen. Bnzzard's Bay. — Drag net, set net, gill net, purse or sweep seine of any kind, in the bay or harbors, coves or bights, unlawful. This shall not affect corporate rights, nor weirs, nor prevent fishing with nets for shad and alewives in influent streams of said bay, nor use of set or gill nets in Fairhaven waters Avithin a line drawn from Cormorant Rock to West Island Rips buoy to West Island Rips buoy to Fairhaven town line. Connecticut River. — Shad and alewives in river and tributaries between July 1 and March 1.5 protected. Fishing within 200 vards of anv flshway, or beyond 200 yards and within 400 yards, save with baited hook and line, unlawful. Gill nets in river or tributaries forbidden. Unlawful from March 15 to July 1, pound, weir, or set net, with meshes less than 2 inches in extent; or seine at any time between sunset Saturdav and sun- rise Monday. Connecticut, Westfield, Deerfield, Miller's, Merrimac, Naslina, and Housatonic Rivers. — Use of sweep seine with mesh which stretches less than 5 inches, in these waters or tributaries, is forbidden. Edgartown and Cottage City.— Seine, mesh net, or gill net for taking fish, except mackerel, within three miles from shore, is forbidden. This shall not affect lessees of ponds nor corporate rights. Mashpee. — Non-residents fishing Avithout selectmen's permit, except in Hamblin's Pond and Popponessett Bay, is unlawful. Merrimac River. — Shad and alewives in river and trilmtaries, except between sunrise on Monday and sunrise on Fridav, from March 1 to May 31, is forbidden. Fishing within 400 vards of anv tishwav is unlaw- ful. Sect. 36 forbids, from June 1 to Februarv 28 inclusive, anv net; net or seine with mesh not less than 2^ inches at any point below Essex Merrimac Bridge is allowed. Fish commissioners maj* license taking any protected lisli in tidal waters of river and tributaries, netting " shiners" 'for bait in November and December, except within 400 yards of a fishway; other fish shall be returned to the water. Gill nets forbidden. North River. — Chap. 199, Laws 1884, exempts North River, Plymouth County, from Sect. 41, Chap. 91; and forbids seine or seines over 385 feet in length. Chap. 336, Laws 1890, forbids obstructing passage of fish with seines, except when one is lawfully fishing. Permits hoop nets for ice fishing. Forbids use of torch, lamp, etc., for spearing. Mill River. — Shad protected in Mill River, in Essex, to July 1, 1892. Plum Island Bay Tributaries. — Chap. 105, Laws 1887 (amended bv Chap. 30, Laws 1889), forbids nets with mesh less than 2J^ inches; or taking smelt from March 15 to June 1. AVestport. — Chap. 193, Laws 1887, forbids nets, except for mackerel; but smelts, herring, alewives, and perch mav be taken in anv wav in Westport River above south end of Cadman's Neck. 38 American Game and Fish Laws. MICHIGAN. When Laii-ful to shoot Gamp. Deer may be killed from November 1 to December 1. Except in Upper reniu^ula, deer may be killed between September 25 and November 15. On the island of Bois Blanc in Lake Huron, deer or elk are protected until November 1, 1899. Killing deer or fawn in red or spotted coat and in the water, or by means of pitfall or trap, is forliidden. Use of dogs or artiticial light unlawful. Wild Turkey from October 1 to December 1. Woodcock, Partridge, Ituflfed Grouse, from September 1 to January 1. W^ild Fowl, Wild I>uck, Wild Goose, Snipe, from September 1 to Janu- ary 1. All other kinds of waterfowl from September 1 to May 1. Quail from November 1 to January 1. Prairie Chicken from September'l to November 1. No trapping or snaring allowed for market. No punt or swivel guns allowed. Nests and eggs of birds protected. Possession, sale, or transportation during close season prohibited. Insectivorous and song birds protected. Trans]H)rtation of deer, riiffed grouse, quails, prairie chickens, and wild turkeys out of the State, or for any purpose other than for consump- tion as food within the State, strictly prohibited. Using guns within live miles of wild pigeon nestings, and netting within two miles, are prohibited. FISH. When Lavfnl to catch Fish. Trout, Landlocked Salmon, Grayling, may be caught from ISIay 1 to September 1. Above fish must be at least six inches in length. Muskellunge, Black, Strawberry, Green, or White Bass from July 1 to Mai'ch 1. Above fish must be caught by hook and line only. Possession of above during close season is unlawful. Unlawful to use spears between March 1 and July 1, except in Lakes Micliigan, Superior, Huron, St. Clair, and Erie, and in Saginaw Bay; ])ro- vided, however, that spearing or catching by dip net of nudlet, grass pike, red sides, and suckers is not unlawful. The sale, or to ship for purpose of sale, any brook trout or grayling from any of the inland waters of the State is prohibited. Nets in Lakes }Erie and St. Clair, Detroit and St. Clair Rivers. — No person shall extend any i)ound, trap, stake, or set net of any kind, or any other device for the purpose of taking fish in Lake Erie (within the juristliction of this State), further than one mile in an easterly direction measured from a line running from Point Mouille, in township of Berlin, in Monroe County, in this State, to Stony Point, in said county, nor farther than one mile out from a line running from Stony Point to Raisin Point, in said county, nor farther than one mile out from a line running from Raisin Point to Bay Point, or North Cape, of Maumee Bay, at the State line between the States ot Michigan and Ohio. Nets, or other devices for taking fish, extending from the shores of islands in Lake Erie within this State, shall not be extended farther than one mile from shore of said islands. No person shall use any pound, trap, stake, gill, or 8et net, or like device of any kind for taking fish in any of the waters of this State connecting Lakes Huron and Erie, nor fish with any seine or Michigan. 39 sweep net beneath the ice whicli may have formed or frozen upon the sur- face of said water, Ijetween a radius of two miles from the outlet of Lake Huron and the mouth of the Detroit River; provided, it maybe lawful with pound nets in that portion of I^ake St. Clair, between a line drawn across said lake easterly, two miles northerly of Windmill Point Light- house, and a line drawn easterly across said lake from the mouth of Milk River, as laid down on the chart of Lake St. Clair made by the United States Engineer Corps on the survey of the northern and northwestern lakes. No person shall use any net whatever, or device of any kind for the purpose of catching li^h, in the waters of Lakes Erie or St. Clair, within this State, beyond such limits as may be designated in this Act. No per- son shall use any pound, trap, stake, like, set net, or device of any kind for taking tish, in the St. Clair River within the jurisdiction of this State, excepting as provided for in Sect. 4 of this Act. No sweep net exceeding 1,50 fathoms in length shall be used in any waters of this State for the pur- pose of taking fish. No sweep net exceeding sixtj' fathoms in length shall be used in the waters of Deti'oit River or St. Clair River within the boun- daries of this State. No person shall attach, either directly or indirectly, to any bridge across either of said Detroit River or St. Clair River, or to any pier, part, appurtenance of said bridge, any net or device by which the pas- sage of fish shall be prevented or impedeit. No bridge company, or other company, or person having the control of such bridge, shall license or per- mit, either for hire or gratuitously, any such net or device to be in any way attached thereto, or to any part thereof. It shall not be lawful for any person to catch or take whitefish between the twentieth day of November and the first day ol March succeeding in each year, in any of said waters of Lake Erie or Detroit and St. Clair Rivers; and immediately after said twentieth day of November, all nets, piles, stakes, and other appliances of every kind which have been used in the business of fishing, shall be carried or caused to be carried to the shore, or inside the channel bank, by the person or persons who have used them; and they shall also cause the ground beneath the waters where such fishing has been carried on to be cleared, so far as may be reasonable to be done, from all debris, and material found thereon, which has resulted from said business. Any person who shall attempt to divert the natural progress or running of whitefish within any of the waters mentioned in the diflferent sec- tions of this Act, by shingling, or any other device calculated to frighten or divert such fish from their natural course, shall forfeit the sum of .f 100, and imprisonment not exceeding sixty days, at the discretion of the court. Pound nets or seines shall not be construed to come within the provisions of this section, when used in compliance with this Act. No part of this Act shall be construed as a prohibition upon fishing with hooks, or with spears, or any instrument or device similar in principle of its operation to such hooks or spears, at any time and in any waters, nor upon fishing with sweep nets of any lengtli not exceeding 150 fathoms, in the waters where pound, stake, or trap or set nets, or set devices of any kind for tak- ing fish, may be used under the provisions of this Act. It shall not be lawful to use sweep nets within two miles of the mouths of St. Clair River during the months of December, January, and February in each year, nor to use seines in the above-named locality during the spawning season of black bass. L,ake St. Clair. — No person shall use any pound, trap, stake, set or sweep net, or device of any kind for taking fish, in Lake St. Clair within the waters embraced in the territory of the counties of Macomb and St. Clair during the months of March aiid April in each year. This Act shall not be construed as a prohibition upon fishing with a hook, or with spears, or any instrument or device similar in principle of its operation to such hook or spears, at any time in Lake St. Clair. Alpena and Presque Isle Counties. — It shall not be lawful for any person or persons to take or catch fish during the months of January, Feb- ruary, Mai'ch, and April, in any of the inland lakes of or situate in the counties of Alpena and Presque Isle. Swains' L.ake. — It shall not be lawful to catch, kill, or destroy fish with seines or with any species of continuous net, or with au}^ foiin of spears, or with any description of firearms in the inland lake known as Swains' Lake, in Jackson County, for a period of five years from and after the passage of this Act. Sect. 2. It shall not be lawful for any person or persons, between the first day of December in each year and the'first day 40 American Game and Fish Laws. of April next i^ucceeding, to lish with a hook and line, or in any other man- ner, in the hike known as Swains' Lake in Jackson County. L,e.s Clieneaiix Channels. — It sliall he unlawl'ul hereafter to fish with seines, gill nets, or any form of pound or trap nets in the channels known as the Les Cheneaux Channels in Mackinaw County, or in the entrances thereto, except that portion lying east of the east line of Sect. 34, of town forty-tNVo north range one ea-^t; said line running north and south. I>onneirs Diamond, Mud, Indian, Dewey, Cable, Magician, Crooked, Round, Brush, and Long; Lakes. — It shall not be lawful for any person to take, catch, or kill any fish in the lakes known as Donnell's Lake, and Diamond Lake in Penn township, Mud Lake in Calvin township, and Indian Lake, Dewey Lake, Cable Lake, Magician Lake, and Crooked Lake in Silver Creek township, all in the county of Cass ; and the Crooked Lake and Bound Lake in the township of Iveeler, in Van Bureu County; and Brush Lake in the townships of Berrien and Pipe- stone, and Long Lake in Berrien township. Berrien County; Lee Lake in Newton township, county of Calhoun, with the spear, net, grab hook, or by the use of jacks or artificial light of any kind, or any kind of fire- arms or explosive material, set lines or other device, except the hook and line. In all prosecutions under this Act, it shall he prima facie evidence on the part of the people of the violation of the provisions of this Act, to show that the defendant was found upon the waters of said lakes with spear, net, trap net, jack or artificial light of any kind, or with dynamite, giant powder, or any other explosive substance or combination of sub- stances. Stone Lake. — Unlawful to take any fish in Stone Lake in the town- ship of La Grange, in the county of Cass; provided, that fishing with a hook and line shall not be deemed unlawful between the first day of May and November in each year. Penalty for violation, fine of $5 to $10a. (See following law.) Cass County. — It shall not be lawful hereafter to fish with seines or any species of continuous nets in any of the lakes within the county of Cass, which are situate in any or* either of the townships of Penn, La Grange, Jefferson, or Calvin. 'Sect. 2. It shall not be lawful to capture, kill, or destroy any fish in any of the lakes in the first section of this Act mentioned, except only that fishing with hook and line shall not be deemed unlawful between the first days of May and October in each year. The provisions of this section shall not apply to any part of said town- ships, except that covered by the waters of Diamond Lake in the town- ships of Jefferson, Calvin, Penn, and La Grange, and of Stone Lake in the township of La Grange. Goguac Lake. — It shall not be lawful to take or catch any fish in Goguac Lake, in the township of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun, with spear, or by shooting them with firearms. Gun Lake. — It shall not be lawful for any person to take or catch any fish in the waters of Gun Lake, in the counties of Barry and Allegan, by means of spear, firearm, net, trap net, snare, or by the use of jacks or artificial light of any kind, or by the use of dynamite, giant powder, or an_y other ex'plosive substance or combination of sub- stances. In ail prosecutions under this Act, it shall be prima facie suflicient on the part of the people to show that the defentlant was found upon the waters of said lake with spear, net, trap net, jack or artificial light of any kind, or with dynamite, giant pow- der, or any other explosive substance or combination of substances. Pine Lake. — It shall not be lawful hereafter to take, or catch, or kill any fish in the lake known as Pine Lake, in the townships of Jefferson and Howard, in Cass County, for the term of eight years from the passage of this Act, with the spear, net, or grab hook, or any kind of firearms or explosive material or other device except the hook and line. Bad River and Branches. — It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to so stretch any wire, drive any stakes, or place* any other obstructions in the channel of the north fork of Bad River, in the counties of Gratiot and Saginaw, or in any of the branches of said streams, as to prevent the free passage of fish up or down the channel of said stream and its branches. Devil's Lake, Round Lake. — It shall not be lawful to catch, kill, or destroy fish with seines, or with any species of continuous nets, or with Michigan — Minnesota. 41 any form of spears, or with any description of firearms, in the inland lakes kuo\yn as Devil's Lake and Round Lake in Lenawee County, and in Whitmore Lake in Washtenaw County. It shall not be lawful for anj^ person or persons between the first day of December in each year, and the first day of April next succeeding, to fish with hook and line, or in any other manner, in the lakes known as Round Lake, in Lenawee County, and Whitmore Lake, in Washtenaw County. Reed's L,ake, Fisk's L,ake. — It shall not be lawful liereafter to take or catch any fish in the lake known as Reed's Lake, or the lake known as Fisk's Lake, in tlie township of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, with the spear, or by shooting them with any firearms. Sect. 2. It shall not be lawful to fish in said lakes, or either of them, in any manner, or to take or remove any fish therefrom in any manner, at any time during the months of November, December, January, Februarj-, 31arch, and April in any year. Muskegon County. — It shall not hereafter be lawful for any person to fish with seines, pound nets, traps, trap nets, or any net of whatsoever kind or description, except dip nets, in any of the lakes', bays, bayous, harbors, rivers, or streams within the county of Muskegon in this State; and when such streams empty into Lake Michigan, or such lakes, bays, bayous, or harbors have an outlet into said Lake 3Iichigan, this Act shall apply to the waters of Lake Michigan at any point within the distance of ten rods from the outlet of any stream therein, or where there are are piers between which such waters are discluuged into said Lake Michigan within ten rods of the outermost end of such piers; provided, that except, as aforesaid, this Act shall not apply or be construed as applicable to the waters of Lake Michigan. MINNESOTA. When Lawful to shoot Game. "Woodcock may be killed from July 4 to Novemlier 1. Prairie Hen or Chicken, or Sharp-tailed Grouse from August 20 to December 1. Partridge from September 1 to December 1. Kuffed Grouse or Pheasant from September 1 to December 1. Aquatic Fowls from August 20 to January 10. Quail. — No quail shall be hunted or killed at anv time until after Decem- ber 1, 189;i. Possession of above birds during close season is iJr/»?«/ffc/e evidence to convict. Big guns, artificial light, and nets unlawful. Decoys may be used in hunting ducks, wild geese, and Ijrant. Elk, Moose, Deer, from November 1 to December 1. Hunting above Avith dogs at any time unlawful. No game bii'ds or animals to be shipped out of State. Nests protected and trapping prohibited. Possession of carcass of above between the 15th of Decemljer and 1st of 'Sovemher piHma facie evidence to convict. FISH. When Lawful to catch Fish. Trout may be caught fi-om April 1 to October 1. Hook and line must be used only. Netting or seining unlawful. The possession and sale of trout during close season is forbidden. 42 American Game and Fish Laws. MISSISSIPPI. Ulien Lawful to sJioot Game. Deer, Turtle Dove, L,ark, may be killed from September 15 to March 1. Wild Turkey, Quail, Partridge, from October 1 to May 1. Mocking-bird, Catbird, and Thrush protected at all times. Eggs of above birds protected. Possession or sale during close season of above birds is unlawful. In Jefferson County it is unlawful to catch in traps and nets any quail or partridge. The taking of any kind of game is prohibited in Tate County between March 1 and October 81. Jasper Countv has no laws on deer and wild turkeys. Unlawful to 'hunt with dogs and guns upon the lands of another, between November 1 and April 1, after the owner of land has posted a notice forbidding shooting. FISH. It is unlaw^ful to catch or destroy tish in any of the rivers, creeks, lakes, or waters of this State by the use of dynamite, gunpowder, or other explosive substance. It is unlawful to fish with gill nets in Tacagoula River, or in any of its tributary streams, lakes, or bayous north of the line of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, within the limits of Jasper County. MISSOURI. When Laicful to shoot Game. Coon, Mink, Otter, Beaver, Muskrat, may be killed fi'om November 1 to April 1. "Wild Buck, Doe, or Fawn from October 1 to February 1. "Wild Turkey from September 15 to March 1. Prairie Chicken from August 15 to February 1. Pheasant, Partridge, Quail, from October 1 to January 1. Turtle Dove, Meadow Lark, Plover, from August 1 to February 1. "Woodcock fi'om July 1 to January 10. Insectivorous and song birds, with their eggs and nests, protected. Snaring of prairie chicken or quail at any time unlawful. Possession and sale or transportation of' above birds or animals during close season is prima facie evidence to convict. Netting on one's own land of quail or prairie chicken is allowed, if for family consumption, between October 15 and February 1. Shooting on another's land without consent is unlawful. Non-residents. — It is unlawful for a non-resident to shoot or ensnare any of the above birds or animals. . FISH. Killing fish by poison or explosives is prohibited. Seining and Netting Fish. — If any person shall place or maintain in any of the waters of the State any seine, net, gill net, trammel net, bag, weir, or other device, or bv anv such means shall take or catch a fish in the waters of this State, he shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof be fined in a sum of not less than $5 nor more than $100. Provided, the provisions of this section shall not apply to persons who own land ae killed fi'om October 1 to April 1. Partridge, Quail, Grouse, Prairie Chicken, Hen, Sage Hen, from August 1.5 to November 15. Shooting of above birds for market, for sale, or for speculative pui*- poses is unlawful. Wild Goose or Dvick may be killed fi'om August 15 to May 1. Insectivorous and song birds, with their nests and eggs, protected. Possession of above birds during close season is prima facie evidence to convict. FISH. A fishing tackle consisting of a rod or pole, line and hooks or spear, shall be the only lawful means bv which fish mav be taken in any of the waters of the State. That the hook shall not be baited with any poisonous drug or substance, and that it shall be unlawful for any person or per- sons to make any dams or use any flsh traps, grab hooks or similar means for catching fish, and no speckled or mountain trout shall be caught at any time for speculative purposes, or for market or for sale, and it shall be unlawful for any person to sell or offer for sale any speckled or mountain ti-out caught in the waters of this State ; provideil, that a seine or catch net having a mesh of not less than one inch square may he used in the Missouri River below the Great Falls thereof, and in 'the Yellowstone River below Clark's Fork thereof, and nothing herein contained shall pre- vent the use of seines or nets for the purpose of taking fish to be trans- planted into private ponds, fish pools, fountains, or aquariums. Any person or persons, company or corporation, offending against this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be fined in anV suln not less than $20 nor more than $100, or shall be imprisoned for a period not more than six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment. Killing fish by explosives is prohibited. The transportation and sale of fish contrary to the above provisions is unlawful. NEBRASKA When Lai'ful to shoot Game. Buflfalo, Elk, Mountain Sheep, Deer, Antelope, may be killed from October 1 to January 1. Grouse fi'om September 1 to January 1. 44 American Game and Fish Laws. Sage Cock, Hen, or Chicken from August 1 to January 1. Quail from Sei»tember 1 to January 1. Trapping of ([uail prohibited. Eggs protected. Deer, Antelope, Elk, Mountain Sheep, Moxintain Goat, fi'om Septem- ber 1 to January 1. Possession, sale, or purchase of above birds and animals during close season is unlawful. Insectivorous birds, with their nests and eggs, protected. Beaver. — Protected until April 1, 1897. FISH. When Lav'ful to catch Fish. The seining of any fish is forbidden. Humboldt River. — It shall be unlawful for any person to catch or kill in anv manner whatever, or to induce, cause, or employ any person or persons to catch or kill in anv manner whatever, anv of the fish within the waters of the Humboldt River or within the water of any of the tribu- taries thereof, from the first day of January to the first day of May follow- ing of each and every vear. It' shall be unlawful for any person, fi'om the first day of July to' the first day of December following, of each and every year, to sell, or to expose for sale, or to buy, procure, or accept for anv consideration from any person or persons whatever, any of the fish caug'ht or killed in the Humboldt River or in any of the tribu- taries thereof. New Hampshire. 45 NEW HAMPSHIRE. When Lawful to shoot Game. Moose, Deer, Caribou, may be killed from September 1 to January 1. Hunting witli dogs forbidden between September 15 and November 1. Each perj^on can only take one moose, two caribou, and three deer. Deer in Cheshire County. —Act of AugUf^t 14. 1889. Sect. 1. No person shall catch, kill, or destroy any deer within the limits of the county of Cheshire for a period of ten years 'from tlie passage of this Act. Sect. 2. Any person violating the provisions of this Act shall forfeit for each deer caught, killed, or destroyed the sum of one hundred dollars; one half of which shall be for the use of the complainant, and the other half for the use of the said county of Cheshire. Plover, Yellowleg, Sandpiper, Duck, Kail, from August 1 to February 1. AVoocU'ock, Grouse, Partridge, CJuail, from September 1 to January 1. Snaring of above birds is prohibited. Kaeeoon, Gray SuriK)se of marketing or selling the same, having been taken or killed within the limits of said county. Oneida County. — It shall not be lawful for any person to sell, carry, or transport beyond the border limits of Oneida County, nor sell or expose for sale at any time or place, any partridge or any woodcock that has been taken, captured, or killed within Oneida County. No person shall at any time or place within Oneida County take, capture, or kill any partricWe ■with any net, trap, or snare, or set or put any net, trap, or snare' for the tak- ing or killing ot jiartridges; nor shall any person sell or expose or offer for sale or purchase within Oneida County, nor bring within said county, any partridge taken or captured Avith net, trap, or snare. Otsego County. — No person shall, for the space of three years after the passage of this Act, hunt, take, kill, or pursue with a dog, any wood- cock or partridge within the limits of tlie town of New Lisbon^ in said county of Otsego, or have the same in his or her possession after it has been so pursued, taken, or killed. Queens and Sviffolk Counties. — No person shall kill, or have in pos- session after the same has been killed, any ruffed grouse, commonly called partridge, from the first day of January 'to the first day of Noveml)er in each year, under a penalty of $25 for each bird or animal so killed or had in possession. Kobins Island. — The shooting of quail upon Robins Island, so long as such island remains the property of the Robins Island Club, shall be permitted to be done by the members of that club and their guests on and after October 15 and until February 1. Rockland Covmty. — Forbids exportation of quail, woodcock, par- tridge, squirrel, or rabbit killed in the county. Staten Island. — Non-residents of the county of Richwood shall not shoot game in any of the towns of said county without having first obtained from a justice of the peace, living in said "county, a license. Fee, $10; good for one year. Tioga County. — It shall not be lawful for any person who is not a resident of the county of Tioga to shoot any partridge, quail, woodcock, or snipe in any of the towns of said county, within three years from Decem- ber 15, 1890." No person or persons, corporation or express company, shall ship, transfer, or take without the county of Tioga any ruft'ed grouse (com- monly called partridge), woodcock, snipe, or quail, for the purpose of sale or trade, within three years from December 15, LSSiO, the same having Ijeen killed within said couiitv. Nothing in this Act shall be so construed as to prevent the killing, bv residents of Tioga County, for the home market, and selling partridge, woodcock, snipe, or quail within the limits of said county. Westchester County. — It shall not be lawful to kill any partridge or grouse, quail, robin, snipe, woodcock, lark, rabbit, or gray squirrel, except during the month of November. Sale of above birds for market is Ijrohibited. FISH. Whe7i Landfill to catch Fish. Sunday fishing prohibited. Salmon may be caught from INIarch 1 to August 15. Fishing with hook and line only. New York. 53 Trout, Landlocked Salmon. Nets, etc., In Trout AVaters. Ice Fishing. Private Waters. — No person shall at anytime kill or catch or attempt to kill or catch any speckled trout, brook trout, salmon trout, or landlocked salmon, with any" device save that of angling with line, or rod held in the hand, except in Lake Ontario and Niagara River, and in Avaters which are wholly private, and in the latter only then by permission of the owner thereof ; iior shall any person set or di'aw any iiet or seine, or use any set line or set pole in any lake, pond, or stream inhabited by sjieckled trout, brook trout or salmon trout, or landlocked salmon, except in the waters of Lake Ontario; but no net shall be set within one mile of the mouth of the Osw^ego River, or have, on the shores or waters thereof, except said Lake Ontario, any net, seine, set line, or other unlawful device for the taking of fish; but this Act shall not apply or prohibit the catching of minnows for bait, in the waters of Lake Kcuka, adjacent to the shores of Yates and Steuben Counties, provitUng the person using the nets for that purpose shall not set them, and shall only use a net with mesh not exceeding one half inch; said net not to exceed one hundred feet in length, live feet in depth or breadth at the ends, and ten feet in the centre, to be used with ropes not exceeding one hundred feet in length, and shall throw back any trout, bass, or suckers, or other game tish taken, and keep only chubs, shiners, and alewives, to be used as herein stated. And no person shall at any time, or in any way, catch or attempt to catch any speckled or brook trout, or salmon trout, or landlocked salmon, through the ice, except in Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, and in waters wholly private. Speckled Trout, Brook Trovit, California Trout, Brown Trout, L,andlocked Salmon. Stocking Adirondack AVaters. — No yierson shall catch, or attempt to catch, or kill, or expose for sale, or have in pos- session after the same has been caught or killed, any speckled trout, broi)k ti'out, California trout or l>rown trout, save only from the tirst day of April to the tirst day of September in each year, except in the counties included in the forest preserve. Trout must be at least six inches in length. Salmon Trout, Landlocked Salmon, Lake Trout. — No pei'son shall kill or expose for sale, or have in his or her possession after the same has been caught or killeii, any salmon trout, landlocked salmon, or lake trout cauglit in the inland lakes or waters of this State in the months of October, Noveml>er, December, .Tanuaiy, February, and (March of each year, and in Lake George the additional month of April. Black B»ss, Oswego Bass, Muskellunge, Pike Perch, Wall-eyed Pike, Salt-AVater Bass, Striped Bass, Lake George Bullheads, and Pickerel. — No person shall catch or kill any Idack bass in the waters of Lake Mahopac, or of Cokimlna County (or iii the waters of Schroon Lake or river, or Paradox Lake, in the counties of Essex or Warren, or in the waters of Friend's Lake in Warren County, or in the waters of Skaneat- eles Lake in the counties of ( )nondoga and Cayuga, or in the waters of Lake Erie and Niagara River above Niagara Falls, on the American side, between the first day of .January and tlie first day of July), or in Lake George, or in Brant Lake, in Warren County, between the first day of January and the first day of August, or catch or kill any black bass, Oswego bass, muskellunge, or pikepercli,commonly called wall -eyed pike, in Oneida Lake between the first day of March and the thirtieth day of May, or in any other waters of the State, between the first day of January and the thirtieth day of May, except in Lake Erie and Niagara River above Niagara Falls,' on the American side, where the same shall not be caught, killed, or had in possession or exposed for sale in Erie County, between the first day of .January and the first day of July, except that bass and muskellunge may be caught in the St. Lawrence, Clyde, Seneca, and Oswego Rivers, Lake (Ontario and Lake Conesus and in Black Lake, in St. Lawrence County, between ilic twentieth day of May and the first day of January. No person shall catch or expose for sale any black bass or fresh-water striped bass, weighing less than one half pound, or less than eight inches in length, at any time, nor catch or expose for sale any salt- water striped bass weighing less than one half pound or less than' eight inches in length from end of snout to end of caudal fin, at anytime. No person shall expose for sale, or have in his or her possession after the same has been killed, any black bass, Oswego l)as3, fresh-water striped bass or muskellunge, save only fi*om the twentieth day of May to the first day of January ; except in the county of Erie, where the same may be 54 American Game and Fish Laws. sold and had in possession only between the first day of July and the first day of January. Nor shall any person catch or kill, 'or attempt to catch or kill, any bullheads in the waters of Lake George, or in the waters of any of the inlets or creeks emptying into said lake, between the first day of April and the first day of July in any year. Nor shall any person, at any time, catch or kill, or attempt to catch or kill, in the waters of Lake George or in the waters of the inlets or creeks emptying into the same, any fish with any set line, or with any device whatever except that of angling' with hook and line held in the hand. Nor shall any person catch or kill any pickerel in the waters of Lake George between the fifteenth day of Febru- ary and the first day of July in any year. Nor shall any person expose for sale or have in his or her possession any pickerel caught or killed in the waters of said Lake George between the fifteenth day of February and the first day of July in any year. Shutting oflf Waters. — No person shall cat(;h any bass, trout, or other fish, in any of the waters of this State, by shutting or drawing off any por- tion of said waters. LOCAL FISH LAWS. Cattaraugus Creek. — Unlawful to net within eighty rods of channel into lake, or take any fish by such means between 3Iay 15 and November 1. Cayuga and Kavika Lakes. — Eels, suckers, and bullheads maybe taken, but no other kind of fish. Cayuga Lake, Clyde River, Ganargua Creek, Owasco Lake, Seneca River. — Seining unlawful in above waters. Chautauqua Lake. — Unlawful to fish except by hook and line. Net- ting and spearing prohibited. Columbia County. — Netting or seining or the use of torch or spear forbidden between January 1 and July 1. This provision does not apply to the Hudson River. Trout in above county may be caught between April 10 and Septem- ber 10. Glen Lake (Long Pond). — Fishing by hook and line only. Netting and S])caring unlawful. Bass may be caught in above lake between January 1 and July 10. Must lie at least eight inches in length, and weighing not less than one' half pound. Pickerel may be caught between July 1 and February 15. Hudson River. — No person shall use any seine, or catch any fish by means of any seine, in any of the waters of the Huilson River contained, between an j'' trestle or bank of any railroad running along said river and adjacent bank of said river. No pound net or purse net shall be used or set in the waters of the Hudson River from the first day of June until the fifteenth day of October in each and every year. No person shall take any shad from the waters of the Hudson Rive'r, above the northern boundary- line of Westchester County, by means of anj^ seine, net, or any other device whatever, from sunset on Saturday to sunrise on the following Monday, between the fifteentli day of March and the fifteenth day of June in each year. Jamaica Bay. — No person shall make use of any seine, purse net, drip net, fyke net, or pound, or use any other appliance for the catching of men- haden or any other fish, except rod, hook and line, in the waters of Jamaica Bay, nor in any amn, bay, haven, creek, basin, sound, or kill therein, at any time of the year. No person shall catch any striped bass, sea bass, or tautog (commonly called blackfish), under six inches in length. No person shall, by any net or device, wilfully or otherwise obstruct the inlet of Jamaica Bay, so as to prevent the "passage of fish therein. Fishing with rod, hook and line, permitted in the Avaters men- tioned herein. Nothing in this Act shall be so construed as to prevent the catching of eels, by the use of spear, or eel weir, or the capture of bait fish or shrimp, by means of hand or cast nets for angling or scientific purposes. Jeff'erson County. — No person shall at any time kill or take from the waters of Henderson Bay or Lake Ontario within one mile from the shore between the most westerly point of Pillar Point and the boundary lines New York. 55 between the counties of Jefferson and Oswego, or within one mile from the shore of any ish^nd in Lake Ontario which is part of Jefferson County, except Grenadier Island and Fox Island, or from the waters of anj^ creek, lake, or river, or inland waters in the county of Jefferson, any fish of any kind by any device or means whatever, otherwise than by hook and line or rodliehl in hand. But tliis section shall not apply to the catch- ing of minnows for bait, providetl the person using nets for that purpose shall not set them and shall throw back any trout, bass, or other game fish taken, and keep only chubs, dace, suckers, "or shiners. I,ake Chainplain. —No person shall catch or kill, or attempt to catch or kill, any fish of any kind in all that part of Lake Champlain, its bays or tributaries, lying or being between the south end of said lake, in the town of Whitehall, Washington County, and Chimney Point, in Essex County, with any set line, seine, gill net, hook net, fyke net, pound net, or net of any kind whatsoever, except for catching minnows for bait, at any time of the year. Neither shall any person or persons have in his, her, or their possession any muskellunge, black or (Oswego bass, pike, or pickerel, between the first day of January and the fifteenth day of June in any year. Gviilford Lake. — It shall be unlawful to fish, or attempt to fish, through the ice at any time or in any manner whatever, in Guilford Lake, near Guilford Village! L,ake Ontario. — Seining is unlawful. Fishing with hook and line only allowed. 'Sew York City. — It shall be lawfnl to have in possession and to sell within the city of New York, at any time, salmon trout sometimes known as lake trout,' also the large-nioutfied black l^ass of North Carolina and Virginia locally known as chub, and pike perch, sometimes known as wall- ej^ed pike, said varieties of fish to be lawfully taken from waters outside of this State. None of the provisions of laws heretofore enacted for the preservation of fish or other game within this State shall be construed to prohibit or interfere with the possession or sale, in the city of New York only, of the above specified fisli taken from the waters 'outside of this State, provided that it be proven, in any action or prosecution for su('h pos- session or sale, that such fish was lawfully taken from w^aters outside of this State. Oneida County. —It shall not be lawful for any person to catch or kill in Oneida County or to have in possession more than ten pounds of speckled or brook trout at any one time, the same having been caught or killed in Oneida County, or for any person, corporation, association, or com- pany to carry or transport or liaVe in po-session for the purpose of trans- porting, more than ten pounds of said lish l)elongingto one person, the same having been caught or killed in < )neida County, aiid never that amount unless accomi)anied by the owner. It shall not be lawful for any person to catch or kill, or attempt to catch or kill or expose for sale, or have in possession after the same has been caught or killed, any speckled trout, brook trout, or California trout, save only from the first day of May to the first da.y of July in each year, in the" following named 'streams'in the town of B"oon- ville : Black River, Alder Creek, Kent Creek, Moose Creek, Mill Creek, and so much of Sugar River as is located in the town of Boonville and all tributaries of Black River on the southwest side of said river, which have been stocked from the State fish hatchery, and all streams in the towns of Annsville and New Hartford. Oneida River. — It shall be lawful to build and maintain in the Oneida River eel weirs of which the lath are not less than one half an inch apart. Otsego Lake. — Fishing with hook and line onlj- allowed. This pro- vision is for two years from November 21, 1890. Otsego County Trout. — No person shall kill or expose for sale in the county of Otsego, or have in his or her possession in said county, after the same has been killed, any speckled trout, commonly called brook trout, save only during the mouths of May, June, July, and August. Schviylers Lake. — No person shall catch, take, spear, kill, injure, or have in his or her possession after the same has been caught, taken, speared, killed, or injured, any fish from the w^aters of Schuylers Lake, in the county of Otsego, New York, or from any of the streams emptjing into said lake', Avithin thirty rods fi'om their "mouths, with any net, seine. 56 American Game and Fish Laws. set line, spear, or any like or other device, except by angling with a hook and line in hand, or by trolling with a hook and line from a Ijoat. Steviben Covinty. — It shall be unlawful for any person to catch, kill, or expose for sale, or have in possession after the same has been caught or killed, any speckled trout, brook trout, or California trout, in the county of Steuljen, "only from the first day of May to the first day of August in each year. No person shall shoot or spear any fish in the Cohocton River, or any of its tributaries within the county of Steuben, from the first day of April to the first day of July in each year. NORTH CAROLINA. When Laii\ful to shoot Game. Deer may be killed fi'om October 1 to February 1, except in the counties of Johnston and those east of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. In Currituck County it is unlawful to hunt or chase deer on the North River side of Popular Branch township from March 1 to September 20. Fire hunting in night-time of deer unlawful at all times. In Bertie County deer may be killed between August 1 and February 1. Quail may be killed from November 1 to March 1.5. Partridge, Dove, Robin, Lark, Mocking-bird, TVild Turkey, fiom October 15 to April 1, except in the counties of Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Transylvania, TyiTcU, Johnston, Jones, Dare, Onslow, Cartaret, and Columbus, in which these birds are not protected. In Currituck Country partridges may be shot and snared between December 1 and April 1. Snaring of above birds during close season is unlawful. Exportations of partridges and quails (alive "or dead) from the State is prohibited. Sundav shooting prohibited. Killing wild fowl for sale in Cun-ituck, NeAV Hanover, and Bininswick Counties, or shipping them out of these counties, is prohibited between March 10 and November 10. Non-residents forbidden to shoot wild fowl in the waters of Currituck, l^ew Hanover, Brunswick, and Dare Counties from blinds, box, and battery not on land at the time. Eggs of partridges and quails protected. Fire hunting of wild fowl unlawful. Decovs are prohil>ited in Currituck County between April 1 and NovembeV 10, and shipping of wild fowl out of the State between these dates is prohibited. It is unlawful to use floating blinds for wild fowl in the county of Currituck. In Martin and Bertie Counties squirrels may be killed between August 15 and March 1. Hunting upon another's land, after notice forbidding same, is unlawful. FISH. Mountain Trout may be caught from December 30 to October 15. Seining of trout is prohibited. Killing fish by explosives is forbidden. NORTH DAKOTA. When Lawful to shoot Game. Prairie Chicken, Sharp-tailed or Ruflfed Grouse, may be killed fi'om September 1 to January 1. North Dakota — Ohio. 57 Wild Duck, Snipe, Goose, Brant, Plover, Curlew, from September 1 to May 15. Song birds protected at all times. Unlawful for any one person to shoot in one day more than twenty-five of either kind of above birds. Snaring is forbidden. Eggs and nests protected. Possession of above birds prohibited during close season. Exportation, Transportation. — It is unlawful for any person, com- pany, or corporation at any.time to ship, tal^e, or carry out of this State any of the above birds, but it shall be lawful for any person to ship to any person witliin this State any game birds named above, not to exceed one dozen in number in any one* day during the open season; provided, lie sliall first make an affidavit before some person authorized to administer oaths that said bii-ds have not Ijeen unlawfully killed, bought, sold, or had in pos- session; are not being shipped for sale'or profit; giving the name and post- office address of the person to whom shipped, and the number of birds to be so shipped. A copy of such affidavit, indorsed "a true copy of the original," by the person administering the oath, shall be furnished by him to the affiant, who shall deliver the same to the railroad agent or common carrier receiving such birds for transportation, and the same shall operate as a release to such carrier or agent fi-om any liability in the shipment or carrying such birds. it is unlawful to shoot any wild duck, goose, or bi-ant with anv swivel gun. Buffalo, Elk, Deer, Antelope, Mountain Sheep, mar be killed from September 1 to Januaiy 1. Exportation of above animals is forbidden. Wasting meat of above animals is unlawful. FISH. The above' provisions do not apply to shooting on the waters of Lake Erie and estuaries and bavs thereof. Wild Duck is protected on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday between September 1 and April 10. Possession or sale of birds and animals above mentioned during close season is prima facie evidence to convict. Wild Pigeon and Wild Fowl protected in their nesting gi'ound or roosting place. Using ferrets upon the premises of another, for purpose of catching rabbits, is unlawful. FISH. Fish Nets, Shooting, Spears, Etc Black Bass. — No person shall draw, set, place, locale, or maintain any pound net, ;^eine, trap, or fish net, in Lake Erie, nor in Sandusky E?ay, " nor in Maumee Bay as far up as Maumee Bridge, nor in Portage Bay as far up as < )ak Ilarljor Bridge, from the fifteenth day of June to the tenth day of Si'])tenil»er inclusive. No person shall set, Iplace, locate, or maintain, or catch lisli with a gill net in any of the waters of the State, except in Lake Erie. No person shall set, place, locate, or maintain any fish net on any of the reefs in Lake Erie. No person shall set, place, locate, or maintain'in Lake Erie any portable fish- net within one half mile of any stationary fish net or lead thereof. No person shall set, place, locate, or maintaiii any net whatever within one half mile of the mouth of any river or cieek flowing into Lake Erie. No person shall catch fish in Mercer County reservoir between the twentieth day of May and the twentieth day of July inclusive, or in the Lewistown reservoirs between the first day* of June and the first day of October inclusive, with any device except hook and line, with bait or lure; and in the season in which net fishing is permitted in the said Mercer County and Lewistown reservoirs, the net known as fyke net or set net only shall be used, and with hoop or mouth of not over six feet in its greatest wiiltli, and with wings or leads of not over fifty feet in length; and said nets shall not be set closer to each other than 100 feet, and when nets may be used having wings or leads, the outer ends of such Avings or leads shall not be closer to each other than 100 feet. No person shall in any of the waters, either natural or artificial, lying in the State of Ohio, or pai t therein, slu>ot or spear fish, except in streains flowing into the waters of Lake Erie; persons may catch fish of the sucker variety known as suckers, mullet, and red horse with a spear. No person shall draw, set, place, locate, or maintain or catch fish with a device called a trammel net, or witli fyke net or set net, except as heretofore stated. No persons shall, in any of the waters of the State, except those heretofore named in this section, catch fish with any device whatever, except hook and line, with l)ait or lure. Salmon in the Columbia and Clackamas Kivers. — It is unlawful to take or tish for salmon in the Columl)ia River or its tributaries by any means whatever in any year hereafter, between the first day of March anil the tenth day of April", or between the tenth day of August and the tenth da> of September, or in any of the rivers and bays of the State or the Columbia Hiver during the Aveekly close time; that'is to say, between the liour of six o'clock p. M. on each and every Saturday, and 'six o'clock in the afternoon of the following Sunday; provided, that in Clackamas River it shall not be lawful to take or fish for salmon, by any means whatever, between tlie tenth day of August and the lirst day of' October; and any person or persons fishing for or catching salmon in violation of this section, or fishing for salmon by leaving or having any fishing gear in the water in a condition to take fish, or purchasing salnion so unlawfully caught, or having in his or tlieir possession any such salmon, shall ))e deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof be fined in a sum not less than fifty dollars nor more than two humlred and fifty dollars. Fishing near Obstrvictions. — It is unlawful in any manner to catch, kill, or destroy any salmon on or within one mile below any rack or other obstruction erected across any river or stream for the purpose of obtaining fish for propagation. Salmon in Other AVaters. — It is unlawful for any person to take or fish for salmon in the waters of the Nehalem, Tillamook," Nestucca, Salmon, Siletz, Yaquina, Alsea, Siuslaw, Umpqua, Coos Bay, Coquille, Sixes, Elk, Chetco, Rogue River, Windchuck, or any of their tributaries, or in any other streams or bavs in this State, except the Columbia River and its tributaries, from the fifteenth day of November until the first day of April during any year. Nets. — It shall not be lawful for anv pound net, set net, trap, weir, or other fixed appliance for taking fish, to extend more than one third of the way across the breadth of any stream, channel, or slough, at the time and place of such fishing. 60 American Game and Fish Laws. Pollution of AVaters. — It .shall not be lawful to cast or pass or allow to be cast or passed into any waters of this State in which salmon or trout are wont to be, any lime, gas, Cocculus indicus, or any other substance deleterious to fish, 'and any person or persons violating any of the pro- visions of this section shallbe deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction therei)t, 1)0 lined in a sum not less than fifty dollars nor more than two hundred and fifty dollars. Possession in Close Time. — It is unlawful for any person or persons to receive or have in his possession, or to ofl'er for sale or transportation, or to transport during the close season in the spring, namelj'^, fi'om Mai'ch 1 to April 10, any of the following varieties or kinds of fresh fish : Chinook salmon, silver 'salmon, steelhead, or blueback. Sawdust, Shavings. — It is imlawful for the proprietor of any sawmill in this State, or any employee therein, or any other person, to cast sawdust, planer shavings, or other' lumber Avaste made by any lumbering manu- facturing concern, or suffer or permit such sawdust, shavings, or other lumber waste to be thrown or discharged in any manner into the waters of this State, or the Columbia River, or to deposit' the same where high water will take the same into any of the waters of this State, or the Columbia River. The use of drugs or explosives in killing fish is prohibited. Fishing upon private waters, after notice posted, is unlawful, without consent of owner. PENNSYLVANIA, mien Lau[ful to shoot Game. Elk and Deer may be killed from October 1 to December 1.5. The killing of fawns when in spotted coat, chasing of elk or deer with hounds, and the killing of deer Avheu in the water prohibited. Squirrel from September 1 to January 1. Hares or Rabbit from November 1 to January 1. Hunting or killing of rabbits with ferrets prohibited. Kuffed and Pinnated Grouse from October 1 to January 1. Any person mav sell or have in his possession any pinnated grouse, commonly called i)ra"irie chicken, ruffed gi'ouse, commonly called pheasant, and quail or Viriiinia partridue, and woodcock, for a period of fifteen days after the time iimitcd lor killing the same has expired. With this excep- tion, the possession of anv of the above-mentioned birds or animals during the close season is unlawful ; but this will hot prevent any person from killing any Avild animal or bird when found destroying one's crops. Bass, Pike, Pickerel, Susquehanna Salmon. — No person shall by anv means or device whatsoever catch or kill in any waters of this State any bhick bass, green bass, yellow bass, willow bass, rock bass, Lake Erie or grass bass, pike or pickerel, or wall-eyed pike commonly known as Susque- hanna salmon, between the first day "of January and the first day of June, nor shall catch or kill any of said species of fish at any other time during the vear save onlv with a rod, hook, and line ; provided,'the above shall not apply to the waters of Lake Erie, except in the ponds on the island or peninsula forming the north and east shores of the harbor of Erie. Drawing off waters for purpose of catching fish is prohibited. Bass, Size. — Unlawful to catch bass less than six inches in length. If caught, must be returned to the M'ater immediately. Trespass. — Fishing in private ponds, after notice posted, is unlawful, without consent of owner. It is lawful to fish with fyke or hoop nets in any of the streams unin- habited by brook or speckled trout, between March 1 and December 1. Set Nets unlawful except in Delaware River below Trenton Falls. Seining forbidden, except in case of shad, the meshes of such seines to be not less than three inches, and no seine shall be drawn within one fourth of a mile of any dam across any river. Sundaj' fishing is prohibited. Fishing in Lake Erie. — It is unlawful to place any set net or set nets, fish baskets, pound nets, gill nets, eel weirs, kiddles, brush or fascine nets, fyke nets, or any other net or nets of whatever description or nature, or any other permanently set means of taking fish or otherwise, in the nature of seines, in anv of the waters of Lake Erie, within two miles from the [entrance of any h\\\, or within one half mile from the mouths of any streams, commonly 'known as and called creeks, flowing into said lake; nor shall any person make use of any device or appliance whatever for the purpose" of taking, catchincr, or killing fish within the above-mentioned limits, or in the creeks flowing into said lake, save only with rod, hook, and line. Any person violating the provisions of this law shall, upon convic- tion thereof, be liable to a penalty not exceeding one hundred dollars for each and every offence. Anv person or persons catching or selling any food fish, caught in the 'waters "of Lake Erie, within the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth, for the purpose of making compost or any fertilizing mixture, is guilty of a mis- demeanor. It is unlawful to place or allow to pass into or upon any of the spawn- ing grounds of Lake Erie, or any part thereof, any fish offal, contents of tannery vats, coal tar, gas tar, sa"wdust and planing-mill shavings, or any other deleterious substance, or for any person or persons to make use of giant powder or other electric powde"r, or any explosive substance what- ever, for the purpose of taking fish; or to spear any pickerel, pike, grass nike,or muskellunge; or to have in possession any fish unlawfully caught in the waters of Lake Erie, bays, ponds, and bayous adjacent thereto; and upon conviction thereof, shall be liable to a penaltj' of ten dollars for each and everv offence. It is "unlawful to fish on the first day of the Aveek, called Sunday; penaltv of twentv-five doUai-s for each and every offence. Nothing in this law will prevent the catching or taking of fish with rod, hook, and line, or bait fish by hand nets or cast nets for angling or scien- tific purposes; or taking fish for artificial propagation, the stocking of other waters, and scientific investigation. 62 American Game and Fish Laws. All fresh-water ducks other than those before mentioned, all sea ducks, geese, crows, kingflshers, crow blackbirds, herons, bitterns, plovers (except as mentioned above), curlews, rails, sandpipers, snipe.^., and all birds of prey except tlshhawks or ospreys, may be killed at any time. 'Shooting or Ashing on Sunday illegal. Trespass. — It is unlawful for any person, between the first day of February and the first day of September, to shoot at or kill any l)ird upon land not' owned or occupied by himself, and without i)ermissi'on from the owner or occupant thereof. Salmon in Puget Sound. — It shall not be lawful for any person or persons to take or fish for salmon during the months of March, Ai)ril, and May of each year on the waters of Puget Sound.
