III ! 2n iqnn / V j ITH all the commercial progress of Athens, the cultivated people of this " Classic City, " city of \/\/ trees and roses and historic homes, take pride in preserving their history and in beautifying their local habitation. Round about the town nature has hung fair draperv, from the Blue Ridge Mountains, which fringe the distant land-scape on the north, to the picturesque' valleys of the southern hills. Here, on the banks of the Oconee, Governor Milledge in iSoi bought and gave to the Trustees of the University of Georgia a large tract of land, "and it was called Athens. " Here the Uni- versity has developed into greatness ; from here have gone forth strong men, well-built characters, schol- arly gentlemen^ > " Old College " still stands, but nearby is a new home of modern science. The Toombs Oak still lends itself to legend, but the whirr of electrical machinery in Morse College tells of progress. Within the walls of many buildings the old learning and the new science are training minds and making men. Around the academic shades has grown up a prosperous town of 12,000 inhabitants, a progressive city, busy with improvements, with an extensive and extending trade. In a balmy and yet tonic climate, with magnificent water works ard sewerage, the health-record of the town is unsurpassed The Middle Oconee has been harnessed at Mitchell's Bridge, and its power has given Athens an excellent system of electric street railways and brilliancy by night. The city-schools of Athens are noted for their fine work, and are provided with commodious build- ings. Here, too, are the " Home School, " the State Normal School, which has erected newer buildings around old "Rock College, " and the famous Lucy Cobb Institute, a refined home of culture. Indeed, for educational advantages Athens is perhaps unrivalled in the vSouth. Churches there are, too, in abund- ance, representing all denominations. Handsome homes line the long avenues, magnificent modern dwellings, many of them of great beauty, and here and there are fine old historic mansions, of the typical ante-bellum Southern architect- ure, with their wide verandas and stately columns; among them the homes of Gen. T. R. R. Cobb, Gen. Howell Cobb and Senator Benjamin H. Hill, of Dr. Crawford Long, the discoverer of anaesthesia, and the boyhood's home of Henry W. Grady. Romantic myth is woven around some of these old places,' and not least around the house of Miss Mary Harden, the sweetheart of John Howard Payne, where he is said to have given her the original manuscript of " Home, Sweet Home. " In the heart of the city stands the unique double-barreled cannon, invented in 1863 by John Gille- land of Athens, a curiosity in the annals of artillery. Nearby rises the Confederate Monument, a grace- ful and grateful memorial. Other beautiful monuments stand upon the slopes of the city of the dead by the winding river. Cherishing her honored past, Athens is making for herself and for the State a future of larger cul- ture and increased prosperitj'. CAMPUS— UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA. UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA.
