While it is the headquarters of immense manufacturing industries, includ- ing hardware, carriages, arms and wire, giving employment to nearly ten thousand people, it is widest known as the seat of the famous ^'ale L'niversity. Xew Haven was settled in llioT. and its importance as a settlement praclicall}- dates from the time when Yale College, founded in Saybrook in Koii. and named after its first benefactor, Mlihu \'ale, was moved here in 17 Hi. Xew I laven has played a rare part in .\nierican political as well as industrial lii>tory. li was here that the regi- cides, (loti'e, Whalley and Dixwell hid during the Colonial times, here also were located Forts Hale and Wooster of Revolutionary fame, and here lived Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and later Xoah Webster, Eli Whitney, Joseph E. Sheffield, founder of Sheffield Scientific School, and many other famous .Americans. Xew Haven now has a population of over one hundred and fifty thousand. Its park system is a wonder and de- light to visitors and to citizens of the city. The central and older portion of Xew Haven is laid out in a regular square, surrounding the Public Creen of sixteen acres on which stand the three oldest churches, known as "The Three Churches on the Green." The beauty of the elms planted about this square and along the principal streets has caused Xew Haven to be familiarly known as "The Elm City." Delightful "East Rock Park." with its incom- parable drives and magnificent water views, is a splendid example of modern excellence in park development.
