The first of these meetings was at Sebec, July 23, 1908, and was held in the Meeting House. An opening address was made by President Sprague, and an historical sketch of Sebec was read by Major Wainwright Gushing. Major Gushing also read a paper on Piscataquis Lodge, F. and A. M., written by Judge Martin L. Durgin of Milo. Sketches of Ezekiel Ghase and Enoch Brown, Revolutionary Sol- diers who had settled in Sebec, were read by Judge Edgar G. Smith, who also read a sketch of Peter IJrawn, one of the early settlers of Foxcroft. Honorable Arno W. King of Ellsworth, justice of the Supreme Judicial Gourt of Maine, a corresponding member of the Society, was present at this meeting and made a brief address. 1909 July 31, the Society went by the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad to Kidder's Point on Penobscot Bay and it wa!^ an enjoyable occasion. 1910 August 6: This was at Farley's at Willimantic. At a previous meeting it had been voted to replace the Moose Horns which were first erected in 1817 and to make this occasion its midsummer meet- ing. Charles D. Shaw of Greenville, in an appropriate speech, in behalf of his brother, Honorable Albert H. Shaw of Bath, Maine, presented to the Society a set of Moose Horns, which were fixed to a post placed on the same spot where had been the old one for nearly a century. A slate tablet, bearing a proper inscription and pre- sented by George H. Wilkins of Monson, was attached to the post. On behalf of the Society, President Sprague accepted the custody and care of this sign post, and delivered an address upon its early history and referred to the early history of the towns of Abbot and Monson. Henry Hudson also spoke, referring to it and to the early days of Monson and Abbot. One of the interesting incidents of the day was the presentation of an American flag to the Society by Harry A. Sanders of Greenville, on condition that it be hoisted on the sign post on each succeeding anniversary of this day and on each Memorial Day and the Fourth day of July. J. Dexter Draper of the Moose Horn neighborhood was appointed custodian of the flag by President Sprague. 21 A poem, **riic Moose IIorn>. "' was rcjul l)\ ^frs. The able and eloquent Reverend Henry E. Dunnack of Augusta, Maine, State Librarian, delivered a scholarly and masterly address to a large and appreciative audience on "Message of the Books or The Romance of History." When the speaker had closed, Reverend J. H. Wil- kins of Foxcroft ai-ose and in behalf of those present, who were not members of the Historical Society, ex- pressed their appreciation of the efforts of the speaker and how much tliey owed the Society for such a delight- ful entertainment, and called on all to manifest their gratitude by a rising vote which vvas responded to en- thusiastically. 23 Contributions Hooks and Paniphkts r'(»i)iiiii>si()n of the l''irst Jn(l<^f of Prohati.- of IMNcata- (juis County.
