ROSTER AND ROLL Surviving Memhers; also, list nf Actions and Skir- mishes participated in "by Officers cr Detached Portions 7th Regiment Yermont Volunteers (VETERANS.) NEW YORK : AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO., 66 NEW CHURCH STREET. S33 ItlY PREFACE, AT the Second Reunion of the Veterans of the Seventh Regiment of Vermont Volunteers, held at Burlington, August 2S-30, 1S83, it was resolved that the proceedings of that and the previous Reunion held at Rutland, together with a Roster of the Regiment, should be printed with a portrait of Colonel Holbrook as a frontispiece. In accordance with this resolution this volume has been compiled, ft is impossible, desirable as it -would be, to give in full the speeches at the Reunion Camp Fires, as no notes of them were taken. Especial pains have been taken to make the Roster accurate and complete: and if there are any errors or omissions therein, they occur through a lack of proper data and material from which to prepare it, and not because of a want of due care. A list of the surviving members of the Regiment, with their present places of residence, so far as known, is also given. It is well known that several of the officers and detachments of the regiment participated in actions and skirmishes which are not inscribed on the colors of the regiment for the reason that the regiment, as a body, did not take part therein. It has been suggested that a list of these should be given, and they will accordingly be found at the end of the book. )1P Origin of' the Reunion Association and Preliminary Proceedings. ][ REUNION of the surviving veterans of the Seventh Regiment of ■^ Vermont Volunteers was first suggested by Captain John L. Moseley, and upon this suggestion such proceedings were had that an organization was formed at Rutland in the Fall of 1881, to be known as the Seventh Vermont Reunion Association, and officers and committees were chosen. Subsequently, in the Summer of 1S82, the name of the organization was changed to " The Seventh Regiment Vermont Veteran Volunteers' Reunion Association," and the following officers were chosen : President. Col. WM. C. HOLBROOK. Vice-Presidents. Col. D. B. Peck, Col. H. M. Porter, Lieut. -Col. E. M. Bullard, Surgeon Enoch Blanchard, Surgeon E. W. Trueworthy, Capt. D. P. Barber, Capt. C. E. Parker, Capt. John L. Moseley, Capt. A. E. Woodman, Capt. R. B. Stearns, Capt. Henry Stowell, Capt. Johm A. Prindle, Capt. D. B. Town, Capt. George Jones, Lieut. Sam'l T. Btell, Lieut. Geo. P. Phalon, Sergt. E. T. Early in the Summer of 1882 the Committee of Arrangements selected Rutland as the place, and August 29th, 30th and 31st as the time for the first reunion, and the Secretary issued circular and other invitations accordingly. Much difficulty was experienced in ascertaining the whereabouts of surviving members of the regiment, and much praise is due the Secretary for his indefatigable efforts to reach each survivor. If any have not been found it is not his fault. It was especially appropriate that the first reunion should be held on the "old camp ground " at Rutland, inasmuch as the regiment was organized and first went into camp there. Moreover Rutland was the home and final resting-place of Col. Roberts, the heroic and lamented Colonel of the regiment, who fell, as a soldier would wish to fall, with his face to the foe, while directing its movements on the hotly fought field of Baton Rouge. The attendance was unexpectedly large, and the reunion proved in every way a success. The reunion too at Burlington was largely attended, and was a most enjoyable and successful one. So long as the members of the regiment assemble in the enthusiastic spirit of comradeship which has so strongly characterized these two reunions, they will ever be profitable and in- teresting. Proceedings at the Reunion held at Rutland, AUGUST 29-31, 1882. f\N the 29th the veterans began to assemble, each train bringing a con- *' siderable number, and toward evening, fully seventy-five were at Camp Roberts, the "old camp ground " of the regiment. The afternoon and evening were pleasantly spent in recounting common experiences during the war, and in renewing "old acquaintance." On the 30th, in the forenoon, a business meeting of the association was held at Camp Roberts, and officers for the ensuing year were chosen as follows: President. Col. WM. C. HOLBROOK. Vice-Presidents. Col. D. B. Peck, Col. H. M. Porter, Lieut. -Col. E. M. Bullard, Capt. Wm. Cronan, Capt. D. P. Barber, Capt. John L. Moselev, Capt. Henry Stowell, Lieut. Wm. B. Thrall. Secretary and Treasurer. Lieut. Oliver P. Murdfck. Committee of Arrangements. Capt. John L. Moselev, Capt. E. M. Knox, Lieut. R. C. Gates. The matter of fixing the time and place of holding the next Reunion, was left to be decided by the Committee of Arrangements. The following resolution, introduced by Capt. J. B. Kilburn, was unanimously adopted. Resolved, that the members of the Seventh Regiment of Vermont Vete- ran Volunteers, acknowledge great obligation to Col. Wm. C. Holbrook, for preparing and publishing their regimental history; for the patient and laborious investigation of records and testimony; and for the careful and accurate statement of facts, and the loyal and sympathetic tone toward his comrades which are exhibited throughout the work, and are fully appreci- ated by us, and we feel that in expressing to him our gratitude and thanks, as we here do most profoundly and sincerely, we are repaying in a very slight degree the service which he has performed in our behalf. 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOI.rNTEERS. In the afternoon, at three o'clock, the members of the regiment formed in Depot Park, under command of Lieut -Col. Billiard, and escorted by Post Roberts, G. A. R,, headed by the Rutland Cornet Band, marched to the grave of Col. Roberts, in Evergreen Cemetery, at Centre Rutland, where a semi-circle was formed around the grave. Prayer was offered by Capt. Joel C. Baker, after which, appropriate music having been ren- dered by the band, Col. Holbrook, on behalf of the veterans of the Seventh, spoke as follows: Comrades — A little over twenty years ago all that was mortal of George T. Roberts was laid at rest in the old cemetery at Rutland. His obsequies were attended by a large concourse of citizens of this and the adjoining towns, assembled to do homage to the memory of their loved friend and neighbor. A long procession, civic and military, reverently and sorrow- fully followed his body to its final place of sepulture. A more impressive spectacle, I venture to say, has seldom, if ever, been witnessed in Rutland, and I doubt if a more fitting tribute has ever been paid to the memory of any of its citizens. The occasion which led to this public demonstration of grief is known to all ; but to none is it so well known as to you, my comrades of the Seventh Vermont. At your head Col. Roberts fell, under circumstances which must ever commend his name to your highest admiration, as well as to that of the people of his native State. And now, after the lapse of these long years, you and our comrades who have honored their Post with his name, have met here to lay the chaplet of esteem upon his tomb. Truly was it said on the receipt, in Rutland, of the intelligence of Col. Roberts' death that "so long as heroism should be admired and patriotism loved, would green garlands of affectionate remembrance be laid upon his honored grave." Although — " his bones are dust And his yood sword rust," this assemblage is attestation that the name and fame of George T. Roberts has not sunk into oblivion. His spirit still lives in the hearts of those who bravely battled in defense of our beloved country, and it ever must live in the memory of all, "so long as the lovers of liberty shall read the story of the great conflict for freedom." Such work as he did does not perish in the doing of it. The conspicuous example of courage which he displayed will be cherished for all recorded time, not only as a brilliant and noble achievement in itself, but it will adorn the annals of Vermont as an instance of the %-alor which has ever characterized the deeds of her sons on the field of battle. In the presence of so many whose acquaintance with Col. Roberts was 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS of much longer duration than my own, I shall not undertake to refer to his antecedents or early life, but will simply give a summary account of his career for the short time it was my pleasure to know him. I first met Col. Roberts in January, 1862, at which time I reported to him for duty. I was drawn to him at once by the frankness and manliness of his nature. From that time until his death we were associated almost continuously, our friendship becoming very close and intimate. Although our intercourse was brief, frequent opportunities were afforded me of seeing Col. Roberts under circumstances which called forth his many sterling qualities. We left Rutland in February, 1862. For upwards of three weeks we were tossing together on the waves of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. For nearly a month we lay in the sand of Ship Island, when for a short time 1 was detached from his command. I next served with him at Vicksburg in the disastrous campaign under Gen. Williams, in which so many of our men were prostrated by disease. On that cam- paign no man faced the severe hardships to which we were exposed with more fortitude than did Col. Roberts. In joining his regiment, from a bed of sickness, he was obliged to run the gauntlet of a merciless cannonade, and while at Vicksburg he was frequently subjected to similar experiences. On all these occasions the same cool and calm demeanor was displayed as that shown on the fatal field of Baton Rouge. His composure was never disturbed by any peril, however great. The battle of Baton Rouge was fought on the morning of the 5th of August, 1862. It happened that I was serving, during the action, as field officer of the day. About daylight a portion of our pickets were driven in. In going to another part of the line I passed by the Seventh and stopped for a moment to give Colonel Roberts the probable point of attack. The fog was then verv dense. The engagement had commenced, and the bullets were coming toward us thick and fast. Colonel Roberts was as self-pos- sessed as though no danger was impending. He had received no definite instructions as to the position he was to assume, but was anxious to take his place with his regiment where the attack was likely to be heaviest. I indicated a point to the left as one from which it seemed to me a formidable assault might be expected, and he accordingly moved his command in that direction. I passed to the picket line on the right. It seems that in moving to the left our regiment became exposed to the fire of one of our own bat- teries in the rear, and, hence, Colonel Roberts was obliged to return to his original position, which soon became the one against which the enemy di- rected their main attack. The firing, as described by those present, was then terrific. The smoke and fog clung to the earth, and was so heavy that it was impossible, with certainty, to locate the position of our own troops, and, therefore, Colonel Roberts wisely hesitated to give the order to fire lest he should injure our friends in front. While holding his men in hand under 7 1 H VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. this storm of shot and shell, an undertaking, as all soldiers know, requiring great nerve and courage, General Williams rode up and instructed him to open fire, and in obedience to this express command our Colonel gave the necessary order. Shortly afterwards he fell, severely wounded. While being removed he was again struck and mortally hurt by a Minie ball. He was tenderly carried from the field. " Borne like a warrior on his shield, So should the brave depart." I met him on the way to the hospital. He was cheerful and bright, and to my anxious inquiries expressed the hope that he would soon be on duty again. All that surgical skill and kind attention from comrades could do to alleviate his sufferings and save his life proved unavailing, and two days later his gallant soul quietly passed into that happier and better life where the soldier's sword is sheathed and all of life's conflicts are over. Although we are no longer soldiers fighting our country's battles, we have each and everyone of us a battle with the world , as our lamented colonel so demeaned himself for his country let us, perhaps in a less bril- liant way, have his example ever before us of braver}', fidelitv and rectitude of purpose, and — " So live that when our summons comes " we may face death with as calm a front and steady a nerve as he did. And now, comrades, I can suggest nothing more fitting, in closing, than those beautiful lines of Longfellow written so nearly at the close of his own life. " Rest, comrade, rest and sleep ! The thoughts of men shall be As sentinels to keep Your rest from danger tree. Your silent tent of green We deck with fragrant flowers ; Yours has the suffering been, The memory shall be our^" At the close of Col. Holbrook's address, further music was rendered by the band; after which, Gen. Wm. V. W. Riplev paid the following tribute to Col. Roberts. Veterans of tin 1 Seventh — I have been asked by the officers of Post Roberts of the Grand Army of the Republic — a Post named in honor of your former gallant colonel — to say a few words to express to you their appreciation of his character and services. I shall say little of his military history ; that has been told you by an abler tongue than mine. I shall prefer to speak of him 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. as I knew him best, and as he was best known by the majority of those present, as a citizen. I suppose that none of you, his comrades, knew Col. Roberts earlier than I did, perhaps none of you knew him better. My acquaintance with him commenced, I think, in 1854, when he came to this town as manager of a branch of the business of Gen. H. H. Baxter, then a recent purchaser of the marble quarries at West Rutland. Circumstances threw us at once into terms of intimate relationship. Conditions existed that might easily have brought us into terms of personal antagonism or even personal hostility. Each of us was the guardian of an interest that was in some sense antago- nistic to the other. For nearly or quite seven years we occupied this posi- tion towards each other, and my mind fails to recall at this time a single unpleasant circumstance or matter calculated to disturb the perfectly ami- cable and friendly relations between us. It seems to me, as I look back upon it to-day, that a man placed in so delicate and responsible a position as Col. Roberts was during that time, who could so carry himself, while most scrupulously guarding the interests of his principal, as to retain the esteem, and affection even, of those guard- ing an adverse interest, must have possessed some qualities of an uncom- mon order. Such qualities he did possess ; his secret was that while he insisted always upon the strictest and most impartial justice forhimself and his employer, he was ready to do the same impartial justice to others. He was slow to form or to express an opinion — not because he lacked a quick perceptive faculty, but because it was the habit of his mind to think twice before he spoke once, to make sure of his thought before he uttered it or acted upon it. This conservative quality of his mind some- times gave him, among those who knew him less intimately than we did, the appearance of hesitancy or uncertainty. Nothing could be more erron- eous than this impression. If he was slow to form or express his thought, he was prompt and even eager in action when action was the word. He was of a generous disposition ; jealousy or envy had no place in his heart. Content to walk in his own chosen path, though by no means devoid of the ambitions and aspirations natural to a healthy and vigorous manhood, he never looked enviously upon those who by good fortune or more active endeavor passed him in the race. At the organization of the militia company with which we were both connected during the few years next preceding the outbreak of the rebellion, and during the first three months of the war, he might reasonably have aspired to a high rank, but he took the position of a non-commissioned officer cheerfully, and rilled it honorably until his talent and worth made themselves manifest and he was called higher. We were in some degree rivals for the command of the Seventh Regi- ment ; he was the more fortunate and became your colonel. No envious 7 Ml \ l RMl >', l \ i i ER VN VO thought, however, entered my head, and no unworthy feeling of exultation entered his, and when we bade each other good-bye — he to go to his death on the banks of the Mississippi and I to my duty in another field — we were better friends than ever before. Of his later military history you know more than I ; the story has been written, and has become part of the history of the State and the nation. That he was a good officer and a true man I know, for it could not have been otherwise. I think, from remarks that Col. Roberts made to me at various times, that he had some premonitions of his early fall. I suppose that all of us have experienced such feelings at times, but it seems to me now that he was peculiarly impressed with them. It has sometimes seemed to me, in looking at the later pictures of him — those taken just before the departure of the Seventh from the State — that there was in his deep, sad eyes a look of prophecy, a far-a-way look, as though he saw beyond the present and into the future, and read there what was to be ; but if this was so, it was not allowed to influence in the slightest degree his course of action. When he laid aside the garb and the implements of civil life to take up those of the soldier, he laid down with them all thought of self or of consequences, and offered his all to the service of his country. Hence- forth he had but one motive in life — to do his duty to that country. How well he bore his part you, his comrades, know better than I can tell you ; You know how his robust frame gradually wasted and weakened under the terrible fatigues and privations of that sad Vicksburg campaign, which, in only thirty-six days, reduced your ranks from over eight hundred to less than one hundred for duty, until, a shadow of his old self, he gave up his life and passed from your sight on the fatal field of Baton Rouge. He was a manly man ; of magnificent physical proportions, he had a heart and brain fitted to match them. He was a just man ; trickery, treachery or deceit were unknown to him. in all my acquaintance with him I do not now remember to have heard a single complaint from any quarter of an unfair or ungenerous thing done or committed by him. That he was a brave man goes without saying. I have been told by men of his regiment that during the frequent exposure of the command, while passing up and down the Mississippi on steamboats, to the fire of the rebel batteries concealed on the shore, they never saw Roberts in the slightest degree excited or disturbed, and that situation, I take it, is about as trying a one as a commander can be placed in, to see his command exposed to a tire to which there is no possibility of replying. He fell in his first field light; had the fates ordained otherwise, Col. Roberts would certainly have distinguished himself for courage and skill on other fields, and would undoubtedly have risen to high and responsible command, but it was not to be; in the vigor and strength of his manhood lie was called upon for the last great sacrifice, and he made it nobly — his ;T1I VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. mortal remains repose beneath the sod of the State which he loved so well; of him nothing remains save the memories of his noble qualities and his gallant death. Take him all in all, he was a noble specimen of Vermont manhood. Twenty years have passed away, and you, his surviving comrades, have come together from widely separated homes to honor his memory, to place upon his honored grave the mingled cypress and the laurel, with wreaths of amaranth from his native hills, and again to- " Light the flame of a soldier's fame On the turf of a soldier's grave." A generation has been born and grown to manhood since the scenes and incidents which you have gathered here to commemorate occurred. To them, the story of these things is only as a tale that is told. Time has thrown its softening shadows over the stern and terrible realities of the strife. It is the habit of the young to think only on the romantic and glorious side of war; to them the returning victor crowned with garlands is a reality; the sufferings of the hospital and the prison — even the terrible agonies of the battle-field — are lost amid the blare of bugle, the roll of drums and the waving of banners. To them war is an ideal employment. To you, who have faced all the realities of actual warfare, the recollections of those days brings other and far different reflections. To them our friend was a heroic soldier, who fell on the field of battle, one of the thousands who so fell. To you, who knew him and saw him die, he was more; in your hearts he will ever hold a warm and tender place; for you best know how true and manly his life was, and how grandly he died. The benediction was pronounced by Capt. Baker, and the procession returned to Rutland, where a dress parade closed the exercises of the afternoon. Several of Col. Roberts' immediate relatives and a large number of citizens were present during the ceremonies at the cemetery. Soon after seven o'clock in the evening members of the regiment, old soldiers from other regiments, and citizens generally, began to assemble at " Camp Roberts," and shortly afterward a huge pile of wood was lighted, which cast a bright illumination over the camp, around which all gathered for a genuine Camp Fire. Col. Holbrook presided, and after a brief but warm welcome to both soldiers and citizens to the First Reunion Camp Fire of the Veterans of the Seventh, proceeded to call up a number of ex-soldiers. Stirring and eloquent addresses were made by Generals Wm. Y. W. Ripley and Wm. 12 ?TH VERM0N1 VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. W. Henry ; Cols. W. G. Veazey, A. F. Walker and H. M. Porter ; Capts. Joel C. Baker, John L. Moseleyand R. B. Stearns, Lucius Bigelow, Esq., and Judge M. H. Cook. The Camp Fire was also enlivened by the singing of old camp songs, between the speeches, by a squad of musicians, composed of Comrades O. D. Bockman, Henry W. Kingsley, Marshal A. Jones, Joseph Needham and Luman A. Ballou. About ten o'clock rations of cheese, hard tack and coffee were issued, after which "taps" were sounded, and the Camp Fire ended. On the 31st, those who had not previously returned to their homes took their departure well satisfied and pleased with all matters connected with their first reunion. At a meeting of several members of the association, convened in the morning, the following resolutions were offered by Col. Holbrook, and unanimously adopted : Resolved, That we hereby return our thanks to the Committee of Arrange- ments and all assistant resident members of the regiment from Rutland for their efficient services, not only in providing for our reception and entertainment, but also for their successful endeavors to render this, our first reunion, in every respect a satisfactory and agreeable one. And we desire especially to thank our Secretary, Lieut. Oliver P. Murdick, for his energetic efforts in ascertaining the whereabouts of our comrades, and in transmitting to them invitations to assemble again "on the old camp ground," and to express to him our conviction that to his indefatigable zeal we are indebted that so many met to renew old associations, and to recall the memorable episodes in our long and severe service on behalf of our beloved country. Resolved, That we also hereby return our thanks to the Central Ver- mont, Bennington and Rutland, and Connecticut and Passumpsic Rail- roads, for their generosity in furnishing transportation to members of the regiment to and from our reunion for half fare. Resolved, That we also hereby return our thanks to the Press of Vermont for the courteous and kindly notices of our reunion published in the various newspapers, and particularly do we thank the proprietor and editor of the Rutland Herald and Globe for the extended space in its columns devoted to the proceedings and ceremonies at our reunion, and we feel deeply gratified, and hereby convey to its accomplished editor our warm thanks for the able and handsome manner in which he alluded to the services and experience of our gallant regiment. Resolved, That we also hereby return our thanks to General Levi G. Kingsley, Quarter-Master General, for his kindness in furnishing tents and camp equipage for our accommodation, and we desire also to thank our distinguished comrades from other organizations who kindly and happily lent their efforts by speech and story at our camp-fire in the evening. Resolved, That we also hereby return our thanks to our comrades of Post Roberts for their courtesy in escorting us to the last resting place of our lamented and heroic Colonel, and for the fit and appropriate tribute which they thereby paid to his memory, and we especially wish to make 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. 13 our sincere and heartfelt acknowledgments to General William Y. W. Ripley, their gallant commander, for his eloquent address at Colonel Roberts' grave. Resolved, That while we are profoundly thankful that, after the lapse of nearly twenty years, so many of us, in the providence of God, have been spared to meet again in friendly companionship, we are sadly reminded of numerous cherished comrades who would gladly have met with us, but who now, alas! rest in deathless sleep under the sod of widely scattered fields, and beneath the restless billows of the Atlantic, and although in many instances not a line or stone marks the final resting-place of those consigned to earth, we pledge ourselves to preserve and ever keep green the memory of all our departed comrades wherever their mortal bodies may repose. B. Stearns at different hotels where the men were quartered. The day and evening, as at Rutland, were de- voted to renewing old acquaintance. On the 29th an excursion was had on the Lake. The following report, published in the Burlington Free Press and Times, August 30th, 1883, is a substantially correct account of the proceedings on the 30th : The Second Annual Meeting and Reunion of the Surviving Veterans of the Seventh Vermont Regiment took place yesterday in this citv, and was in all respects a notable gathering and a successful and interesting occa- sion. The veterans gathered by trains and boats on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning ; and many cordial greetings between comrades long separated took place as the}' met. About a hundred members of the regi- ment fell into line in front of the Van Ness House, when the order was given by Col. Holbrook at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning. The procession was headed by the Sherman Band, and made quite a show on the streets. It marched around the Square, up College Street to Willard Street, and thence down Pearl Street, and to the Vermont Central Wharf, where, at ten o'clock, they went on board the good steamer Reindeer for a ride upon the lake. Assembled on the boat, the gathering was seen to be a strong representation of the Seventh. Of the three surviving Colonels who suc- cessively commanded the regiment, Cols. Holbrook, Peck and Porter, all were present. So were Lieut.-Col. Bullard, Quartermaster Morse, Sur- geon Trueworthy and Chaplain Hopkins, of the field and staff. No less than nine captains, viz.: Capts. Knox, Cronan, Stowell, Kilburn, Moseley, Parker, Town, Clark and Stearns, were on hand, with Lieutenants Moore, Murdick, Burns, Phalon, Edmunds and Wait, and about a hundred of the rank and file Among the invited guests present were Generals Wm. Wells, W. W. Henry, Gen. L. G. Kingsley, of Rutland, Gen. T. S. Peck, Capt. S. E. Burnham, of Rutland, Hon. George H. Bigelow, Lucius Bige- low, Esq., of the Rutland Herald, Edward Wells, Esq., G. G. Benedict, and other citizens. The wives of some of the officers, with several young ladies of Burlington, graced the excursion by their presence. Superin- 7'1'H VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. \-j tendent Conant, of the Grand Isle Steamboat Company, accompanied the part}-, and was unremitting in his attentions to the comfort and pleasure of the soldiers and their guests. The company numbered, all told, about one hundred and fifty. The band enlivened the trip with choice music. The route of the Reindeer was north, among the islands, and thence to Pitts- burgh, through some of the most beautiful portions of the lake, and all enjoyed the ride exceedingly. THE BUSINESS MEETING-, At twelve o'clock, President Holbrook, called the society of the Seventh Regiment to order, in the Stateroom Hall, and the society proceeded to the election of officers for the year ensuing. The following were unanimously elected, amid the applause of the members. President. Col. WM. C. HOLBROOK. Vice-Presidents. Col. D. B. Peck, Capt. Wm. Cronan, Col. H. M. Porter, Capt. John L. Mosei.ev, Lieut. Col. E. N. Bui.eard, Capt. Henry Stowell. Secretary and Treasurer. Lieut. Oliver P. Murdick. Tt was voted that a Reunion of the regiment be held next year at Rut- land, at a time to be fixed by the Committee of Arrangements. Captains E. A. Morse, Charles Clark and J. B. Kilburn, were ap- pointed Committee of Arrangements. The thanks of the society were heartily voted to Lieut. Murdick for his efficient services as secretary and treasurer; and to the last committee of arrangements, Captains Stearns, Moseley, Knox and Gates, for their excel- lent arrangements for the present Reunion. On motion it was voted that a Roster of the regiment be printed, with a likeness of Col. Holbrook as frontispiece, in connection with the proceed- ings of this and the previous Reunion. The members "chipped in" liberally to replenish the treasury, and as the boat neared Plattsburgh the society adjourned sine die. .H.T PLATTSBURG-H, The procession was reformed at 2 o'clock and marched to the Cumberland and Witherell hotels, to which the party had been assigned, in about equal numbers, for dinner. The dinners at each house were excellent, and nicely served, and full justice was done to them by all. At half past 3 1 8 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. o'clock the society marched back to the boat and re-embarked. The ride back was a short and delightful one, and at 5 o'clock the regiment formed again on the wharf and marched up to the Van Ness House, where they disbanded for supper. The excursion was in all respects a pleasant affair. The officers of the Grand Arm}' Post of Plattsburgh, and other citizens of that thriving town, expressed regret that they had not been notified of the coming of the regiment, as they would have been glad to tender an escort for the march and other courtesies ; but the boys of the Seventh were out more for a good time among themselves than for show ; and no one could complain of any lack of attention, as their time on shore was too short to admit of any formal reception. THE CUMF-FIRE, At 8 o'clock in the evening a camp fire was held in City Hall, whither the veterans marched preceded by the Sherman Military Band. The hall was well filled and the exercises proved of much interest to the veterans and others present. Col. Holbrook presided, and on the platform with him were Cols. Porter and Peck and Capt. R. B. Stearns. A committee was appointed to wait upon Hon. George F. Edmunds and request his presence at the hall. He responded and was greeted upon his entrance with enthusiastic applause. Col. Holbrook opened the camp-fire with substantially the following address : Comrades and Fellow Citizens — To-day we are assembled to hold the second reunion of the veterans of the Seventh Vermont Volunteers. Last year its members met at the home of our first colonel in numbers which sur- prised and gratified all. It was an impressive spectacle, after the lapse of twenty years, to witness over one hundred and fifty veteran soldiers from one regiment gathered around the grave of a beloved commander, cut off in the very opening of a career which gave unusual promise of usefulness and honor, to pay so marked a tribute of respect to his memory. Such demon- strations, although rare, serve to illustrate that true manhood and valor will always be honored. To the men of the Seventh Vermont the name of George T. Roberts will ever stand as the synonym of all that is honorable and chivalric. To us his name and deeds are a rich heritage, as they are, and ever must be, to his State and country. He belongs to that long list of heroes and martyrs who died on the field of honor that our nation might be great and free. In honoring his memory, therefore, we honored ourselves. To-day the attendance is such as to again show that the gallant veterans of the Seventh are as ready to respond to the call of comradeship as they were prompt to answer to the demands of duty in the days when they wure 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. Jg the blue, and faced the hardships and perils of "grim visagedwar" in all its varied forms. I congratulate you that so many have gathered to renew old acquaintance, and to recall the experience and events which knit together in lasting friendship the members of that grand old regiment. I congratulate you that the effacing finger of time has left so few visible marks to remind us that we are nearer the autumn of life, by over two decades, than we were when we entered our country's service. Here and there, it is true, we behold a comrade whose frosted locks betray the flight of years ; but in the main we present ourselves in a reasonably good state of preservation. Long may we be spared, and frequently may we meet in friendly reunion, to recount the days and nights of adventure on flood and field, intermingled as the)- were with the continual round of toils and pleasures, hardships and dangers attendant upon our lives as followers of the trumpet and drum. In a few years other voices will be lifted to swell the current of song and story, growing out of the many memorable incidents of the war. Let us, there- fore, while we may, gather as often as possible to contribute our fund of anecdote and song, and to re-cement the bonds of friendship and brotherlv regard formed in the dark and perilous days which so tried men's souls. This should especially be the case with the members of the Seventh, for the}' were ever characterized, while in the service, by their thorough loyalty to and friendship for each other. Indeed, there were peculiar reasons why the regiment should have a sort of individuality of its own. Compelled to serve in fields remote from the State; isolated, except for a brief period, from all other Vermont troops ; performing duty so far from home that friends and relatives could not visit it or minister to the wants of its sick and dying, the men were forced to rely upon and stand by each other, and so, through all the vicissitudes of its long and eventful career, its members seemed bound together as with hooks of steel. Then too, the regiment, with no opportunity to become acclimated, was called upon, im- mediately after entering the service, to take part in an ill-stAred and dis- astrous campaign on the Mississippi, and to march through and quarter in localities reeking with pestilence. While its ranks were being decimated by disease and death, and with over two-thirds of its members pros- trated with fevers and other forms of sickness, and its men well nigh dis- heartened at the outlook, it was so unfortunate as to be wickedly and maliciously traduced by an unscrupulous and mendacious commander, who, in spite of strenuous entreaty, condemned it unheard and falsely ; and upon false and trumped-up charges sought to cast a stigma upon the fair fame of Vermont by calling in question the conduct of its officers and men upon a battlefield from which, during the progress of the action, he was reposing hundreds of miles away, and upon which its heroic Colonel and others fell mortally wounded at the very forefront of battle. -Ill VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. Struggling under a cloud of ignominy, such happily, as no other Ver- mont regiment ever encountered; so far distant as to be unable to throttle, e'er they reached home and friends, the atrocious lies circulated by the Commanding-General concerning the regiment. Weighed down with humiliation and disgust at his unjust and brutal treatment, which, with all our efforts we found ourselves powerless to avert, still the regiment toiled on performing manfully and well all duties assigned to it, until at last the silver lining appeared in the clouds, and those who survived " Butler's Ditch" and Camp Williams, had the supreme satisfaction of finding that even a Court of Inquiry, selected by B. F. Butler, was constrained to acquit the regiment of the manufactured charges he had so preferred against it, and that too, upon the identical evidence offered before him prior to the promulgation of his calumnies, but which, with characteristic obstinacy, he refused to hear. What manner of man was this who presumed to so grossly asperse a regiment of freemen and patriots; denying them even the common justice of a hearing! He was none other, as might be expected, than a General, whose entire military career was marked with a series of monumental blunders, and who, as a soldier, for conducting field and fighting opera- tions, stood first on the roll for inefficiency and incompetence. It is true, however, that as a military inventor he was original as well as unique, for in addition to inventing the charges against the Seventh Vermont, he was the author of the Ditch at Vicksburg, which bears his name, as well as of a like excavation at the Dutch Gap Canal. He also illustrated how an army could be bottled up at Bermuda Hundred, and finally he demonstrated to the world, at Fort Fisher, that fortifications could not be demolished by causing a loud explosion outside the walls. We read in Holy Writ, that Joshua levelled the walls of Jericho by the blowing of ram's horns, and by the shouts of his people. But the Lord was with Joshua, which was probably never the case with Benjamin, at least no Seventh Vermont men will ever believe that it was. We felt sure when the sad news was brought to us, that he was to be re- moved from the Department of the Gulf, and transplanted in new fields, that he would shine as an inventor even though he might fail to gain dis- tinction as a soldier, and anyone who will take the pains to read Badeau's Life of Gen. Grant, will find that we took his measure correctly. Painful as it was to lose him, the regiment, after his departure, had the good luck to serve under honest and fair-minded officers; and, there- fore, nothing was thenceforth spoken of it but praise. It was invariably given posts of honor in action and elsewheie, and nobly did it vindicate its reputation for valor and good behavior. At Baton Rouge, in addition to the great heroism displayed by Colonel Roberts, Color-Sergeant Parkhurst especially distinguished himself, as 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. did the entire color guard, of whom Corporal Piper lost an arm ; and it was left for the Court of Inquiry convened by General Butler to award to the line officers generally, the praise which the)' all so much merited, but which he unjustly withheld, and also to especially mention the creditable conduct of Captain If. M. Porter, upon whom the com- mand of the regiment temporarily devolved on the fall of Colonel Roberts. At Gonzales Station, Capts. Smalley and Moseley, Lieut. Knox, Adjutant Sheldon and others behaved with uncommon gallantry. At Mariana the lamented and lion-hearted Young fell riddled with bullets while heroically leading a charge. At Spanish Fort a Burlington boy — Capt. Riley B. Stearns and his gallant comrades — performed one of the red letter achievements of the siege, and, as they deserved, received unstinted praise, from friends and foe alike, for their conspicuous courage. Others, too, of whom I at present recall the names of Col. Peck, Capts. Dutton. Moseley, Parker, Smalley, Stowell, Croft and Woodman, Lieuts. Knox, Howes, McCormic, Town, Gilbert and Murdick, for creditable behavior, elicited frequent commendations during the siege. Afterwards, at Whistler, the officers and men behaved with great spirit, so much so as to be specially noticed, as had previously been the case in several sharp combats in Florida. As Commanding Officer of the Seventh for nearly three years, I can testify to its uniform good conduct and braver}'. It was a thoroughly well drilled and disciplined regiment, and its officers and men were alike imbued with the highest patriotism. This is shown by the fact that, un- supported, it evinced sufficient manhood and cohesion to live down the efforts of so vindictive an officer as Benjamin F. Butler, who did all in his power to dishonor, if not to destroy it ; and in spite of his asseverations to the contrary, it proved, on more than one bloody field, that it could, as it ever did, fight in a way worthy of the sons of Vermont. Long after he had been banished from the army, and relegated to deserved obscurity as a military commander, the Seventh Vermont was gallantly battling in defence of the Union. It served longer, lost more men from disease, and more of its members re-enlisted for the war than was the case with any other single Vermont organization. For what we did we claim no greater meed of praise than is our due. We know full well how valiantly all the soldiers from Vermont acquitted themselves in defence of our flag, and for all our brethren in arms we have ever entertained the highest respect and admiration. We are proud of their lofty achievements, and will ever honor them for their patriotism and courage. We have a number of distinguished soldiers and citizens pre- sent, and as we desire to hear from them, as well as from some of our own number, I will detain von no longer. 7'ni VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. Col. Holbrook first called upon Senator Edmunds, who, in responding, alluded to his desire to keep in the rear at regimental reunions, as one of the stay-at-homes, but as nevertheless always being ready to tell how he felt about the sacrifice made by those who went to the front. In seek- ing a cause for the war Senator Edmunds spoke of the condition of civilization at the North and the South, which were so totally different that things could not go on as they were. Either the Union must be dissolved or slaverj' abolished. The Southern people doubtless acted up to their convic- tions. But those same people who now have free institutions, free schools and free people are glad of the result. The work the soldiers did was bearing its steadfast fruits day by day. Those who live twenty-five years will see a civilization in the South, as the result of their work, where ever)' man, white or black, and of whatever religious denomination, will have perfect liberty of opinion. Then we shall have a republic that is homogeneous, and just so far as you have this will you have the ideal republic. What State could point to greater achievements of her sons than Vermont, whose sons helped to do this ? The Seventh regiment had not only the ordinary experiences of exposure to climate and perils of battle, but it went through what no other Vermont regiment did, it experienced unjust aspersions upon its conduct in action. But its members stood up under, and resented, the unjust accusations like men, and fully vindicated themselves. Sergeant Bigelow was then called upon and responded in a characteris- tic address, which was enthusiastically applauded. He spoke of the re- spect and honor due the veterans of the war and warmly advocated such Reunions as this. They serve an educational purpose of inestimable value. Col. Redfield Proctor, of Rutland, was next called upon. He briefly and happily expressed his pleasure at meeting the veterans of the Seventh — a regiment which contained many of his friends and townsmen. Col. H. M. Porter, of New York, being called on, spoke of the suc- cessful character of the Reunion, and the enjoyment which all derived from it. " Teniing on the Old Camp Ground " was sung; after which, Lieut. G. G. Benedict was called on. Lieut. Benedict, excusing himself from at- tempting a set speech, said he was glad to meet so man)' of the veterans of the old Seventh, some of them his personal friends for many years. He spoke of the special hardships undergone by the regiment, and briefly sketched some incidents in his history, complimenting it on its record and its complete vindication from unmerited obloquy. Sergt. Warren Gibbs was introduced by Col. Holbrook, and spoke briefly of the object and the desirability of such a Reunion as the present. " Marching Through Georgia" was then sung; after which, the meet- ing adjourned. 7TH VERMONT VETERAN VOLUNTEERS. THE REUNION Was a "ratifying success in point of numbers, and not less so in all its features. All who participated enjoyed themselves greatly, and leave for their homes with the pleasantest possible memories of the gathering. On the 30th, at a meeting of members of the Association, the following resolutions were offered by Col. D. B. Peck, and unanimously adopted : Resolved, That we return our thanks to the several railroads of Vermont for their generosity in transporting members of the Association to and from their homes for half-fare. Resolved, That we return our thanks to the Hon. G. G. Benedict, editor of the Burlington Free Press and Times for his handsome editorial and other notices of our regiment and its officers, and especially for his full and interesting account of the proceedings of the second day of the reunion and at the camp-fire in the evening. Resolved, That we return our thanks to the several speakers who honored our camp-fire with their presence, and who, by their eloquent remarks, contributed so much to our enjoyment and to its success.
