THE CITY OF ALBANY 
 
 ) LB ANY, the beautiful capital of the State of New York, is located on the west bank of the noble 
 
 Hudson, about one hundred and forty-five miles above the island of Manhattan. The first settlement 
 
 at this spot by white men was made in 1614 by a party of Dutch traders who operated under a grant of 
 
 the United New Netherlands Company and built a trading-house and stockade. This was destroyed by 
 
 a rise in the river, but in 1623 the Dutch West India Company built a more permanent defended post 
 
 and called it Fort Orange in honor of the reigning prince of the Netherlands. 
 
 A settlement gradually expanded under this name and in the control of the Dutch, but in 1664 the country passed from 
 
 their hands and their English successors changed the name to Albany to please the Duke of York and Albany, whose first 
 
 title had already been pre-empted by the growing metropolis at the mouth of the Hudson. 
 
 By this time the town was the center of a flourishing trade, and .it continued to grow so rapidly that it was incorpor- 
 ated as a city as early as 1586. Albany achieved considerable importance as a colonial city. It was a rendezvous of 
 several important militan,' expeditions during the bitter Indian and Canadian wars of the eighteenth century, and in 1754 
 it was the meeting-place of a Continental Congress to discuss the project of a federal union which was attended by dele- 
 gates from all the colonies north of \'irginia. Thus the idea of the great Union, destined to become a glorious fact, was 
 first formulated in Albany. 
 
 The city was a hotbed of patriotism during the Revolution, and furnished the ideal soldier, General Schuyler, to the 
 American cause. It was an important depot of supplies throughout the war, but although frequently threatened, was 
 never reached by any British expedition. 
 
 Albany was selected as the State Capital in 1797, and its growth from that time has been steady and substantial. 
 Stimulated by the opening of that titantic undertaking, the Erie Canal, and the building of giant railroad systems, the 
 city's prosperity has kept pace with its population. It is now a busy community of over 100,000 inhabitants, with 
 immense lumber, grain, manufacturing and shipping interests, and a political and social eminence which exceeds that of 
 many larger cities. 
 
 Albany is famous for its magnificent public buildings, including the world-renowned State Capitol, its beautiful 
 thoroughfares and its many .stately homes. Its central location, high social tone and cultivated citizenship conspire to 
 make the city a worthy home for the gwerning powers of the greatest State in the Union.

THE STATE CAPITOL 
 
 This splendid edifice appropriately located upon the central hilltop of Albany, 155 feet above the Hudson, is a conspicuous object from every approach to the city, 
 and is considered the finest building in the world. The grounds embrace nearly eight acres, three of which arc covered by the huge dimensions of the Capitol. It 
 is built of solid Maine granite, in architectural plan a modified French Renaissance style, around a central square court. The cornerstone was laid with Masonic 
 ceremonies in June, 1871. The estimate of the cost when entirely completed is aboMt $27,000,000. 
 
THE COURT OF APPEALS, CAPITOL BUILDING 
 
 A magnificent court-room in the southeast corner of the third floor of the Capitol. It is 53x35 feet, of lofty proportions, and beautifully finished in oak. A grand 
 fireplace of Sienna marble and onyx is on the left side. The walls are adorned with portraits of distinguished men and the windows are surrounded by carved stone. 
 The seat of the justices of this highest of State Courts, and the rails that divide the panel work on the walls, are also enriched with exquisite carving. 
 
THE SENATE CHAMBER, CAPITOL BUILDING 
 
 The Senate Chamber is located at the east end of the south side of the Capitol and is without a rival in the world as a legislative hall. The Ught is received 
 through great windows of stained glass and shows a bewildering and sumptuous scheme of adornment in which the rarest marbles, finest onyx and massive carved 
 oak beams are used with artistic judgment. The elaborately decorated ceiling, the arches of the galleries and the grand fireplaces on each side of the entrance are 
 especially beautiful. 
 
THE ASSEMBLY CHAMBER, CAPITOL BUILDING 
 
 The Assembly Chamber is at the opposite end of the Capitol on the same floor as the Senate Chamber. It is nearly equal in beauty and of grander proportions. 
 All the desks are of dark and highly polished mahogany. Four enormous pillars of rose granite with white marble bases and capitals support a carved and polished 
 oak ceiHng. The windows below the ceiling are Blled with rare stained glass through which the light casts a rich glow over the splendid interior. 
 
GOVERNOR'S ROOM, CAPITOL 
 
 In the southeast corner of the second or entrance floor is this beautiful room, 60x40 feet jn size. The mahogany wainscoting rises to a height of fifteen feet. 
 Hangings of Spanish leather are above the carved moulding that surmounts the wainscoting, and the ceiling is paneled in dark wood. A grand fireplace adds to the 
 beauty of the room. The walls are hung with valuable portraits. 
 
THE GOVERNOR'S MANSION 
 
 The official home of the Governor of New York is beautifully located on Eagle Street, and is one of the finest residences in the country.

THE OLD STATE HOUSE 
 
 The first legislature to convene in Albany met in 1797. No especial building was completed for the use of the lawmakers until 1808 when the Old State House 
 was erected on the hill in front of the site of the present State Capitol. In half a century the old structure became cramped quarters and in 1878 the legislature 
 removed to the unfinished newer building. The Old State House is now used in connection with the Capitol by the State Comptroller and State Engineer. 
 
POST OFFICE 
 Corner of Broadway and State Street. Cornerstone laid May 7, 1879. Cost, $530,000. The upper floor is used for government ofSces.

 The nave has a length of 125 feet and the transept 96 feet. It contains 2,500

ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH (CATHOLIC) 
 Located on Ten Broeck Street. Dedicated May 13, 1860. 
 
 ST. PETER'S CHURCH (EPISCOPAL) 
 Situated on State Street. Consecrated Oct. 4, 1860.

 This splendid institution is considered one of the finest hospital buildings in the world, 
 and contains 140,000 square feet of floor space. Cost over $300,000. 
 
 ALBANY CITY HOSPITAL 
 
 It is built on the pavilion plan. 
 
 The hospital covers ten acres of ground 
 
NORMAL COLLEGE 
 
 This college, founded in 1844, was the first normal school to be established in 
 the State of New York. The fine college building is located on Willett Street, 
 near Madison Avenue, and facing Washington Park. It will accommodate six 
 hundred and seventy pupils and cost, exclusive o*^ furnishings, about $140,000. 
 
 ST. AGNES' SCHOOL 
 
 St. Agnes' School was founded by Bishop Doane in 1870. The school buildings 
 now consist of a large main structure, the East Wing, the Studio Building, 
 Gymnasium and Graduates' Hall. Erected at a cost of $50,000. 
 
ALBANY HIGH SCHOOL 
 Located on Eagle Street 
 
ALBANY BOYS' ACADEMY 
 Facing State House. Erected 1815. Cost $90,000. Private School.
