I, ^lAy Inscriptions on the Grave-Stones in the Old Churchyard of ^t pauV^ mnammtt North Kingstown Rhode Island With a Record of the Inscriptions in the Graveyard of the Old Church at Wickford Compiled by JAMES N. ARNOLD Privately Printed Boston Compiler's Note When I first visited this Churchyard, February 20, 1880, /> was in good condition; the MacSparran Monument having been ere^ed in 1868, and the walls and ground put in order in 1869. When I last visited the yard, November 1 7, 1 908, it showed negleSl, the wall being down in several places and the ground needing care. Accounts of many of the per- sons whose names are inscribed on the stones of the Churchyard may be found in the " History of the Nar- ragansett Church'' {Second Edition, i()oj), to which the reader's attention is dire5ied. James N. Arnold. Preface THE printing of this colleftion of the in- scriptions upon the gravestones in the ancient burial-ground of Saint Paul's Church, Narragansett, is the result of a visit paid to it by the Rev. Daniel Goodwin, D.D., of East Greenwich, Mr. William Watts Sherman, of Newport, and myself, in the summer of 1 908. It being evident that the inscriptions were becom- ing obliterated by wind and weather, it was pro- posed to secure a record of them before further decay rendered them illegible. It was suggested that Mr. James N. Arnold be entrusted with the deciphering of these in- scriptions ; but when the writer entered into cor- respondence with him on the subjed:, he learned that Mr. Arnold had already copied almost all the inscriptions in the burial-grounds of North and South Kingstown. The transcript of the inscrip- tions of the stones in the old churchyard of Saint Paul's, he very generouslyplaced at our disposal, and all of its entries have been carefully com- pared with the original inscriptions by Mr. Arthur B. Cook. A diagram showing the ap- proximate position of the graves in the church- yard has also been supplied. As will be seen, the interments in the old churchyard have ex- tended from 1705 to 1884. The inscriptions in the />rd'j-^«/ graveyard of the "Old Church" (re- moved to Wickford in 1800) are included in the Appendix, so that a complete record of the stones now existing in both churchyards is here vi Preface presented. As many of the Narragansett families, however, had private burial-grounds on their own estates, the stones of which record is here made are, therefore, memorials of but a small proportion of the families belonging to Saint Paul's parish. Printed through the generosity of Mr. Wil- liam Watts Sherman, a descendant of several well-known Narragansett families, this little book has had the advantage of the coopera- tion of Dr. Goodwin, who has kindly read the proofs, and supplied references to such parts of his edition of Updike's History of the Narragan- sett Church (1907) as throw light upon the lives of the individuals buried in these ancient ceme- teries. I have placed upon the plan of the old church- yard a cross indicating the tumulus marking the exad: spot under which Dr. MacSparran is buried. At the time of the eredtion of the MacSparran monument, the precise locality was not accurately known, so the memorial was placed where it would have the best appearance. It may be remembered that the burial of Dr. MacSparran was described in the Parish Record as being under the Communion Table, which at that period stood at the east end of the Church. The position of the Church is quite accurately known, the great door then being to the north, and not to the south as now. On entering this north door, the Altar would have been at the left; and supposing the Church to have stood very near Preface vii the western boundary of the graveyard (as has been affirmed by aged people living within the last half century), approximate measurements would place the Altar at the precise spot where a mound now exists. This mound was pointed out as the spot of the Doctor's interment by my great-grandmother, Mrs. Lodowick Updike, to agrandson, — Mrs. Updike having been present, as a girl of seventeen years, at the burial of the Reftor of Saint Paul's, who was her uncle by marriage. This tradition was handed on to Dr. Goodwin by the grandson in question, the late Updike Hagan, Esq.; and on our visit to the old Narragansett churchyard Dr. Goodwin showed me the tumulus and told me his reasons for be- lieving it to be traditionally and actually the pre- cise spot of the Reftor's grave. The mound is to be marked by a stone ; and this further record of the matter is, as good Dr. MacSparran said in his Parish Register, "recorded for ye Informa- tion and Benefit of Posterity." D. B. U.
