THE DESCENDANTS I SPER GUTTFELDER. SUPPLEMENT. ;;;!» m WM\0 I SUPPLEMENT TO THE Casper Glattfelder Record EMBRACING THE ADDITION OF 545 FAMILIES BY NOAH MILLER GLATFELTER 1910 ST. LOUIS NIXON-JONES PRINTING CO. 1910 PREFACE. Since the Glattfelder Book was issued (1901), the compiler has not been idle, having traced 545 families' additional members of the same Great Family Tree. This surprising result was accomplished by ex- tensive correspondence with many faithful spirits co-operating in the work, to whom the Family, as well as the compiler, are greatly in- debted. Among these, deserving special mention, are Mr. Wm. H. Welfley, photographer, Somerset, Pa.; John H. Glotfelter, Vice-Presi- dent, State Normal School, Kansas, who supplied the record of J. Adam Glotfelter; H. W. Shafer, Jersey ville, 111., and Mrs. Geo. P. Reinhart, Baltimore, Md. The blood of Casper Glattfelder is now traced in thirty States of the Union, Mexico, Cuba and the District of Columbia. Since the data of the 861 families of the old book were collected (1900) many changes, by birth, marriage and death, have occurred. Of these changes there is no record in the new. It must not be understood that the Record of the Glatfelter family is now complete. Though the branches of the tree are outlined, by careful inspection, it will be seen that on quite a number, both large and small, the fruit is as yet undiscovered. All additional records received will be carefully treas- ured for future use. Finally, the writer, on the one hand feels as owing an apology for the great condensation of the material in hand — material comprised in the two books, together with historical sketches, should be spread over 500 or 600 pages. On the other hand, my fond hope is that some future altruist will have the means and spirit to sacrifice the amount necessary to accomplish the object; for, I have yet to hear of a genealogist who has profited by his undertaking. Trusting, however, that my friends, perceiving the limitations, will readily pardon shortcomings in a work requiring many hours of faithful toil, and accept it in a kindly spirit. N. M. GLATFELTER, M. D. (3) SUPPLEMENT TO THE CASPER GLATTFELDER RECORD. HISTORICAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE RECORD OF CASPER GLATTFELDER. Since 1901, when the Glattfelder Book was issued, new facts have come to light, and many additional families have been traced. The records of the family, preserved in the church at Glattfelden, go back to Adam Glattfelder, 1570. Our Casper comes five generations later. The present inhabitants of eastern Switzerland are the descendants of the Alemanni, one of the many German tribes from the North who overcame and planted themselves where the Romans held sway. The prolonged struggle of the Alemanni, until they had full possession, lasted from A. D. 162 to 432. Glattfelden— the field on the river Glatt— was one of the "hoffs" into which the land was divided. So, it is evident the name Glattfelder originated there and dates very far back. When Casper emigrated to America, he brought with him his wife, two sons, Solomon, John, and two daughters, Margaretta and Anna. Later there were born to him four more sons, Felix, Michael, Henry and Casper. All of the sons, excepting Solomon, were soldiers in the War of the Revolution.* It is due the record of my original family tree, made 1859, to say that my father stated Casper had six sons, but he did not know what became of one of them, nor his name. This was Solomon, mentioned in his father's will, 1775, preserved in court records, York Co., Pa., and recently resurrected by our faithful worker, Mr. Granville Glatfelter. When Casper died, he was the owner of 250 acres of land, located at and embracing Glatfelter Sta. on the N. C. R. R., some 5 or 6 miles south of York, the fine valley of the Codorus in front, a line of high hills in the rear. The contour of the landscape seems a duplicate of his original home. The farm, valued at £300, was willed to his son Felix, to be paid for by easy installments. The appraisement of his personalty amounted to £297.9.6. The widow was carefully provided for. To Casper, youngest son, was willed the large family Bible. There can scarcely be any doubt Casper is buried at Bupp's Union Church, being the nearest burial place. His sons, Michael and Felix, and daughter, Margaret, and, probably, son Casper, are buried there. All the sons, except Solomon, settled on farms in the immediate vicinity. Solomon appears to have learned the trade of blacksmith; married; then went westward, about 1765, tarrying at Hagerstown, Md., we find him settled near Salisbury, Somerset Co., Pa., 1776. It is thought by some, Margaret was married to Peter Klinefelter, and Anna to Conrad Swarts. The evidence is not sufficient. The Glattfelder tribe as a whole may be described as industrious, economic, honest, patriotic, peace-loving citizens; neither rich nor * For John, see Penna Archives, Series VI., Vol. II., page 674, Capt. Geiselman's Com- pany. SUPPLEMENT TO THE CASPER GLATTFELDER RECORD. 5 poor; none found in almshouses or jails; not prominent in political preferment; prolific and long-lived, numbering now many thousands, which are scattered in thirty states, the District of Columbia and Mexico. Notwithstanding the outflow, there remain in York Co., Pa., 235 tax-payers of the Glatfelter name. Until in recent years they have not been found in the higher educational walks and professions, though the spirit of the present augurs a future full of promise. Four annual reunions have been held, the last two at Glatfelter's Sta., N. C. R. R. (the old homestead), the others near Bupp's Church. The attendance has been large, the interest great, and promises to continue. EXPLANATORY. Families added are numbered without reference to the numbers in the Glattfelder Book, beginning with No. 1 and continuing the ordinal series. The old numbers used are in black-faced type. There are two indexes, one for the additions to the old book, the other for Solomon's tribe. SUPPLEMENT— CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS. Page 7. Under Felix, add Mary m. Hartman; Elizabeth m. Ness.
