The Colored Real Estate Men of Chicago art? handling over fifteen millions of dollars' wortlr of city property; they are in position to please any purchaser who wishes to invest in Chicago- Real Estate. Give them a chance. rs-'^^ ^ We are thankful to the Chicago Assoclatiorl of Commerce for this statement, as printed in the "Guide to Chicago:" "In 1777, there lived in a cabin on the site how occupied by the Kirk Soap Factory, near the corner of Kinzie and Pine streets (North Side), a San Domingo negro trader named Jean Baptiste Pointe De ^aible. This negro occu- pied the cabin for seventeen years, finally sell- ing it to Lemai, a French trader*, who, in turn, Isold it to John Kinzie (for whom Kinzie street is named) in 1804. Jean Baptiste was the first man to acquire title to Chicago real estate, which has held good to this day, and was, for this reason, our first city father — Chicago's first landed citizen." NEGKO BUSINESS DIRECTORY OF CHICAGO. THE NEGRO BUSINESS AND WHAT IT MEANS TO THE NEGRO RACE. The Negro Business League is a wonderful institution and our ability in recog-nizing- this fact places us in an inferior position as busi- ness men and women. We have not come to a full realization as yet as to its power for good. Wielding a good influence everywhere for the good of man its elemental spirit is true and righteous altogether. First. Because it deals with the spirit of business co-operation a thing not to be despised by any race, a thing most needful among men. Second. We are living in a commercial age and have in the past planned but few things o;- institutions for the commer- cial and practical business training of our chil- dren which should be an imperative mandate to every negro family. Third. We should par- ticularly remind ourselves of this fact that de- pendency has made the negro wards of charity, in a sense, instead of men and women of larger opportunities. From this we must have, and the Negro Business League and the Industrial Institutions, will give a relief. Fourth. We have been sowing and building too much into the cosmos, and not enough into our respective communities. Fifth. We have been violating the economic law by our racial extravagance. We have wrongfully (because of the religious training) permitted our's and the lot of our children, here on earth, to fall into the hands of thoughtful others, while bending all of our energies to establish a home beyond the river. V/e are not so much to blame for this, how- ever; our parents taught us what they knew, and this is all they knew, because of their social environments making an individual kingdom of their own, selfishly as well as ignorantly, ignor- ing the principles of Nature's laws — that "self- preservation is the first law of nature." or the law of progress, "to him that hath, to him more shall be given, and to him that hath not that which he hath shall be taken away." We should not forget that science ri&'htfully used and properly applied, is one of the greatest attrib- utes of civilization, that the ability to govern one's self is the panacea for every" wrong, and the protection from every crime. Negro busi- ness means negro employment. We take it that the Negro Business League is nothing more or 1 NEGRO BUSJINESS DIRECTORY OF CHICAGO. less than a League to advance, enhance, to get and to give negro employment, in every legiti- mate way plausible. It means nothing more oi- less than deliverance from the social, political and economic slavery. If we do not become sincere as a race in developing the moral and industrial status of our children we must expect race degeneration. But we are thankful to Him who created a Booker T. Washington and through him made it possible for the race to come back, slowly, but surely, to its own. A FE-IV FACTS. There are 75.000 negroes in Chicago. They wear over 175,000 pairs of shoes per year, at the rate of $2.00 per pair, costing not less than $350,000. We have 20 000 men and 45,000 women and children that spend for sundries, $1,450,000. We have 20,000 men and women that spends over $712,000 annually for rum, cigars and tobaccos. Our women are spending over $406,000 an- nually for toilet articles. There are over 30,000 negroes in this city who pay an average of 10 cents each per day for carfare to the city railroad, whicli is over $3,000 per day or $1,068 000 annually. We are spending for food stuff, $13,000 per day, $390,000 per month, or $4,680,000 annually. There .are 25 white insurance collectors, who collect from our people $350 per weel-;, or $10,500 per month, or $126 000 per year. Added to this over $500,000 in fire and acci- dental insurance. The Chicago negro is spending over $27,400,000 per year. Who is most benefitted by doing so? Who? We have some $3,000,000 deposited in the va- rious banks. How much of that amount have we deposited in the two colored banks? Is this asking too much? There are 28 saloons owned by colored men in Chicago. The negro business men anrl women of this city are giving employment to 1,112 men and 614 women. Total, 1.726 persons. They pay them over $5 130,360 annually. NEGRO BUSINESS DIRECTORY OF CHICAGO. It was originally organized in 1SS2 and reorgan- ized in 1891. The musicians now in the company- have sung together for eleven consecutive years and in that time have given over twenty-four hundred concerts. Each member of the com-, pany is a splendid musician and a worthy mem- ber of society, each proud of his untarnished name. They have a repertoire of over three hundred songs and give a program of unusual variety of the old-fashion jubilee songs. This company is a great credit to the race. It travels in the best Chautauqua circles, in this country. They are doing more to eradi- cate the enmity between the races than any other known agency. They have been and are now singing race interest and brotherly love- and Christian equity in the hearts of the Ameri- can people, singing to ten of thousands of white people at a time. A history of Illinois, written? by an Englishman, has seen fit to give them a place therein. They have stopped at some of the best homes of the greatest lecturers ire America. This company is owned by two Chi- cagoans, Mr. W. R. Carter and Mr. Silas Frazier. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS 005 813 533 1
