Hodge. New England Society of HISTORY OF THE NEW ENGLAND SOCIETY. It was a well-known fact that the Western Reserve, of which Cleveland is the metropolis, was settled largely by New England- ers, but it was not until 1853 that the idea of forming an Associa- tion to perpetuate the memory, the principles, and the spirit of the early settlers of New England, their heroic self-denial, invincible courage, enlarged views and wise policy, first had public expres- sion. Previous to that time Plymouth Congregational Church, composed largely of New England people, had celebrated the an- niversary of the Landing of the Pilgrims — "Forefathers' Day," December 22nd. The first public expression of the New England people was on the 22nd of December, 1853, when, after an eloquent address by Hon. Erastus Hopkins, of Northampton, Mass., in the Second Presbyterian Church, the company adjourned to the Weddell House and sat down to a supper, where kernels of parched corn were found under every plate — in memory of tlie Pilgrim Fathers. Hon. A. C. Brownell, then Mayor of the city, presided, and appropriate toasts were eloquently responded to by Judge Rufus P. Spalding, Hon. Hiram Griswold, General John Crowell, Colonel Richard C. Parsons and the Rev. Frederick T. Brown. Early in December, 1855, the New England Society of Cleve- land was organized, with the following officers : President, Benja- min Rouse ; Vice-Presidents, George Mygatt and Orlando Cutter ; Managers, Peter Thacher, Joseph Perkins, Selah Chamberlin, Joseph Masury, and John C. Proctor. None of these survive. A constitution was adopted, with this preamble : "For the purpose of promoting a kindly spirit among the sons of New England, for the taking of ourselves back to the standard of our fathers, for the cherishing of those ties which bind us to our native soil, and for the promotion of peace and good will among the descendants of the Pilgrims, we, residents of Cleveland and vicinity, natives of New England, have formed ourselves into a society and put forth the following : "Article I. This Society shall be known as ' The New England Society of the City of Cleveland.' "Article II. This society shall have in view the closer brother- hood of the sons of New England, and shall strive, by all the legitimate means of its organization, to promote harmony, sociality and prosperity among its members. Cleveland and the Western Reserve. "Article III. Any person being a native, or the son of a native, of the New England States, may become a member of this society by subscribing to this Constitution and paying into the treasury the sum of one dollar in advance, and may continue his member- ship by an annual payment in advance. Any person paying fifteen dollars at any one time shall become a Life Member, with all the privileges of membership. "The officers of the society shall be a President, two Vice- Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, Chaplain, and six Managers, all of whom shall be natives of the New England States. " The Board of Managers may appropriate a portion of the an- nual income of the society, not exceeding two-thirds, to the relief of the indigent or unfortunate persons of New England birth." The following are the names of the original members : Philo Chamberlin, Judge Rufus P. Spalding, A. G Colwell, Merrill Barlow, Hon. S. O. Griswold, Henry F. Brayton, J. C. Doane, A. W. Ingersoll, D. D., Brooklyn, N. Y., and L. F. Mellen, Cleveland. The second festival of the New England Society to commemo- rate the landing of the Pilgrims was held, on the evening of De- cember 2ist, 1855, at the "Angier House" (now the Kennard Hotel). Responsive toasts were made for each of the New Eng- land States by Hon. William Slade, James A. Briggs, Esq., Gen- eral John Crowell, Hon. Albert G. Riddle, S. O. Griswold, Esq., Judge J. P. Bishop, and Lewis Ledyard Weld, whose response for Connecticut was an original poem. The third festival and banquet was given at the Weddell House, December 22, 1858. Over three hundred guests were present. The worthy toastmaster, Ossian E. Dodge, in announcing the reg- ular toasts, added verses and songs, adapted to the occasion, from his own "versatile though erratic brain." The responses to the regular toasts were made by Rev. James Eells, Rev. William Brews- ter, Philo Chamberlin, Esq., C. W. Palmer, Esq., Merrill Barlow, Esq., Judge F. J. Dickman, Seneca O. Griswold, Esq., Colonel Richard C. Parsons, and Judge Rufus P. Spalding. Of these speakers only Judge Dickman survives. The exercises at the sup- per table were closed by singing "Old Hundred," led by Ossian E. Dodge, and the hall was cleared for dancing. The papers on the following day described it as "the greatest, most harmonious, and best conducted festival ever held in Ohio." The officers elected at this meeting were : Picsident, Philo Chamberlin ; Vice- Presidents, Peter Thatcher and Wm. Perry Fogg ; Secretary, Mayor H. M. Chapin ; Treasurer, H. B. Tuttle ; Managers, S. O. Gris- wold, I. C. Pendleton, Ossian E. Dodge, James C. Doane, and Dr. Strickland. Of these Colonel Fogg is the only survivor. The next anniversary festival of the New England Society was held at the Angier House (now the Kennard), December 21, 1859. Eloquent addresses were made by Hon. William Slade, Mayor George B. Senter, C. W. Palmer, Esq., Col. R. C. Parsons, Rev. Edward Payson Ingersoll, John C. Grannis, Esq., Hon. S. O. Gris- wold, and Ex-Chief Justice Bartley. Of these speakers William Cleveland and the Western Reserve. 5 Slade and Rev. Dr. Ingersoll survive. The following officers were elected : President, William Slade ; Vice-Presidents, Daniel P. Rhodes and Dr. Lyman Little ; Chaplain, Rev. Wm. H. Goodrich ; Secretary, H. M. Chapin ; Treasurer, W. P. Fogg ; Managers Amasa Stone, Philo Chamberlin, James C. Doane, William Ed- wards, John C. Grannis, and Merrill Barlow. This was the last public meeting and celebration of "Fore- fathers' Day " held by the Society until it was reorganized in 1895. The lapse of the organization was due largely to the great wave of the Civil War, which swept over our land, absorbing the time and interests of all the sons of New England, and buried out of sight all thoughts of the Pilgrim Fathers. In November, 1894, a meeting was called at the Hollenden Hotel to revive the old New England Society, to form a new or- ganization, and to take steps for its incorporation, and to make suitable provisions for celebrating Forefathers' Day. A committee was appointed to select speakers and to prepare a programme and bill of fare for the supper to be served by the ladies of Plymouth Church. At this meeting resolu- tions to reorganize the New England Society of Cleveland and vicinity were adopted as follows : "Whereas, The New England Society of Cleveland, Ohio, has been recently revived, by incorporating the same under the laws of the State of Ohio, for the purpose of fostering and promoting a kindred spirit among the sons and daughters of New England and their descendants, residents of Cleveland and vicinity, and the cherishing of those ties which bind us to our native land and its institutions, and for social and intellectual improvement ; and, "Whereas, It is essential that this body here assembled nomi- nate and elect the following named persons as Trustees of the New England Society, to wit : L. A meeting of the New England Society was held at the Hollen- den Hotel, January ist, 1896, and, in accordance with the vote at the meeting on December 21, 1895, the Trustees proceeded to adopt a Constitution and By-laws and elect officers. Mr. L. F. Mellen presented the following : "The New England Society of Cleveland and vicinity having been incorporated under the laws of the State of Ohio, for the purpose of fostering and promoting a kindred spirit among the sons and daughters of New England and their descendants, resi- dents of Cleveland and vicinity, known as the "Western Reserve," and that, to cherish the memory and perpetuate the principles and institutions of the early settlers of New England, to collect and diffuse information of historical interest, and to extend charity to the needy who are known to be of New England descent, and, having elected twenty-one Trustees to manage and govern said society, adopt the following Constitution : "Article I. The officers of the Society shall be a President and six Vice-Presidents (one from each of the New England States), a Secretary , Treasurer and Chaplain (who shall be the pastor of Plymouth Church, Cleveland), and a Board of Trustees, who shall act as an executive committee. "Article V. "Article VI. 'X\yQ Board of Trustees shall have power to de- vise ways and means for raising funds to carry on the work of the society." The following officers were elected for the year 1896 : President — Hon. N. B. Sherwin. Vice-Presidents — Maine, L. E. Holden ; New Hampshire, E. R. Perkins; Vermont, F. C. Keith; Massachusetts, M. M. Hobart ; Rhode Island, Judge F. J. Dickman; Connecticut, Wm. Bingham. Secretary— \.. F. Mellen. Treasurer — S. C. Smith. Chaplain — Rev. Livingston L. Taylor. A noted event in the history of the New England Society was the part it took in the celebration of the one-hundredth anniver- sary of the settlement of the city of Cleveland in 1896. The Cen- tennial Commission appointed July 22nd as " New England Day," and invited the New England Society to arrange a celebration pro- gramme. A very successful banquet held under a large tent on the grounds of the Western Reserve University. There were nearly five hundred persons present, and the following distinguished speakers made addresses : Hon. William McKinley, of Ohio (now President of the United States) ; United States Senator Joseph R. Hawley, of Connecticut ; United States Senator John Sherman, of Ohio; Governor Asa S. Bushnell, of Ohio; Hon. George M. Case, President Common Council of Hartford, Conn., and others. The following is from the address of President McKinley on "New England Life and Character ": " It gives me sincere pleasure to meet and address the New Eng- land Society of the City of Cleveland and the Western Reserve. Those of us who are descendants of New England join with us who are not descendants of New England in this pause to give tribute to the men who did so much for civilization and for the establishment of free government on this continent. There has been every variety of characterization of the New England Pilgrim and Pioneer — some of it of a friendly character and some of an unfriendly character. I recall to-day the characterization of the gifted son of New England, now dead, George William Curtis, whose memory we cherish. He said : 'The Puritan was harsh, se- vere, sour, bigoted and intolerant, but that God had sifted three kingdoms to find the seed-grain with which to plant a free repub- lic, and that he had done more for liberty than any man in Roman history.' It is said that the blood of New England courses through the veins of a quarter of the population of the United States. I know not how this may be, but I do know that the conscience and the ideas and the principles of New England courses through every Cleveland and the Western Reserve. ii vein and artery of the American republic. Well may you be proud to be descendants of New England ! " No lack is in your primal stock. No weakling founders builded here ; They were the men of Plymouth Rock — The Puritan and the Cavalier." " They fought on every battle-field of the republic, from Concord and Bunker Hill to Gettysburg and Appomattox, and the torch of liberty which they lighted illuminates the whole world. Stick to your Puritan heritage, but let the freedom of the age, its light and sweetness, add to the stern faith your fathers had." The celebration of "Forefathers' Day" was' observed with a banquet at the First Presbyterian Church, East Cleveland, Satur- day evening, December 19, 1896. About two hundred persons sat down at the supper table, and were served by the ladies of the church. The addresses were : " Old Time Farm Life in New Eng- land," Prof. W. I. Chamberlain, Hudson, O. ; " Women of New England," Miss Mary Evans, Painesville, O., Principal of Lake Erie Seminary; "Laws and Legal Reforms of New England," Hon. Edward H. Fitch, Jefferson, O. ; " Peculiarities of the Pil- grims," Rev. J. W. Malcolm, Cleveland, O. The following is from Principal Evans address : "The women of New England ! How large that goodly com- pany, and how good ! Who can tell what they have been in the making of a nation ! They were pioneers. 'They created that distinctive America, to whose ideal, despite occasional protests and temporary action, all parts of the nation are steadily conform- ing.' What have New England women given to the life of the nation besides these inspirations of duty, these virtues of home- life? Straightway we think of the church! It is significant that the earliest movements of far-off and high empires to conquer distant lands for Christ had their birth in the hearts of New Eng- land mothers. They first gave their sous, who afterwards gave themselves New England women were not only active in the enterprises of the church, but they were loyal to its theology They leaned hard upon the 'eternal justice,' believing, somehow, it must be the other side of eternal love. New England women were great in the Home and in the Church, but they were also great in the School, and here I find what seems to me the crown- ing gift of New England manhood and of the life of the nation. We cannot afford to forget what has been put into the life of the nation by the women of New England. How faithless and un- grateful shall we be if we do nor mingle with our praises some ear- nest resolves that the inheritance shall not be lost. Let us try to regain their simplicity and sincerity in the midst of our complex life Let us try to recover their reverent attitude, their strong purpose, their determination to conquer every hurtful thing in the national life. Let us try to be content with a few things earned, 12 New England Society of paid for, and therefore truly enjoyed We go back that we may go forward, gathering inspiration for the problems of our lives from the noblest examples of the past. And there is need of all the "prayers laid up" in New England homes by fathers, by mothers, and teachers ; there is need of courage, of faith, of hope for humanity, that, in our day and generation, we may be wise as they were, and strong to do." The celebration of "Forefathers' Day" for 1897 was omitted. At the annual meeting held January ist, 1898, Hon. L. E. Holden was elected President of the New England Society. December 19th, 1898, the annual celebration of "Forefathers' Day " was observed, as required by the Constitution, with a banquet at the Hollenden Hotel, in connection with The Cleveland Congrega- tional Club. The main address was from Rev. Frank S. Fitch, D. D., of Buffalo, N. Y. At the annual meeting of the New England Society, held at the Hollenden Hotel, January ist, 1898, Hon. H. Q. Sargent was elected President. The anniversary of the Landing of the Pilgrims was again ob- served by the New England Society on Thursday evening, Decem- ber 2ist, 1899 — "Forefathers' Day" — with a banquet at the Hol- lenden Hotel. After the supper there was an address of welcome by Hon. H. Q. Sargent, and an address — " Puritan Influence " — by Franklin Carter, D. D., LL. D., President of Williams Col- lege, followed by short responses by representatives from the New England States, as follows : Maine — Prof. Charles F. Maberry. New Hampshire — -Captain F. A. Kendall. Vermont — Rev. J. G. Eraser, D. D. Massachusetts — Harry A. Garfield, Esq. Rhode Island — Mrs. Elroy M. Avery. Connecticut — J. G. W. Cowles, Esq. This was one of the most successful entertainments the New England Society has held. The New England Society, at its annual meeting, January i, 1900, adopted a resolution requiring hereafter annual dues from each male member of the Society of ?i.oo, and that there be pub- lished a book containing the history and proceedings of the So- ciety, together with a complete and correct list of its members. "Please send the amount in enclosed envelope to the Treasurer, which will be duly acknowledged, and entitles you to a copy of the book." Give the New England State that you, or your ancestors are from, and also the full names of each member of your family, and such other persons as you know to be eligible, with correct address, that the Secretary may notify them.
