MISS LOUISE HUSBAND, Author and Reader of Prologue. For Assistant Episode Directors see page — The scene is laid on a stage arranged on tlie river facing Sherburne Park, Mt. Vernon. In the fore- ground is the greensward with a background of tree branches to represent the Forest. Over the water comes hastening to their trysting place the nymphs of the Beautiful Oholiio. They imi- tate, in dance, the laving waves, surge back and forth, storm driven, followed by a calm. As they rest lapping the shore, forth from the wood dance the unleashed Dry- ad spirits, mingling with myriad Fireflies and glittering Starlight, all reveling in the night. At the approach of day they flee from siglit into the bosom of the forest. Foreshadowing the events to follow, steps forth our Indiana, to greet Posey County and her ten Townships. Two heralds follow, announcino- the coming of the SPIRIT OF THE CENTENNIAL, who delivers A PROLOGUE The sands in Father Time's glass run slowly And mark the clianoing ages as thev go. POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT All the past with its trials lies hehiiid us, All the future with its uneertaiuties awaits us. Lest we forget, 'tis well to review the story of our State And credit give to those who helped to make it. The beautiful River Ohohio, famous in legend and song, With her rippling sparkling water, heavenly blue, Laughing and playing on its way to the sea. Has called all native sons and daughters true Of Old Posey to meet in a loyal clan, To join the County party of honor to the age Of Indiana History's most treasured page. One hundred years have come and gone. Pondering, we live in another world. And catch anon a glimpse of characters and early days, So dear to everj^ Hoosier heart. Here once there rose and fell the laving wave And Dryads sprang from sylvan forest glade. Where star-like woodland sprites to Pan's sw^eet music Bent each graceful form. When, lo! There glides in silent train the Red jNIan and his squaw To pitch their wigwam and to build their daily fire. The Braves to hunt and dance, in gravest measure. The Squaws to cook and weave and live their simple Wandering life in peaceful ease. Next comes the Frenchman w ith his beads and blankets gay To barter with the trapper for his furs, And bring the Message of God's mercy and His love. The pioneer, with brawny arm next swings the axe To clear the land and till the soil. His heart agl6w with hopeful fire, kindled with deter- mination's oil. About his home the treacherous Indian lurks. Creeps to his door the wild beasts in their search Of food. Dangers and privations daunt liim not. POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT Down the broad Ohio, into the Wabash came Stalwart German settlers, followers of Father Rapp. In the broad and fertile valley founded Harmonie. Industries began to flourish. Factories began to thrive. On the hills were planted vineyards, flelds were cleared for grain. With tool and trowel, skilled mechanics builded better than they knew. A godly, earnest people were they, industrious and true. Then came Robert Owen, full of zeal and hope. To evolve his social pro'olems, make a paradise of eaith. New Harmony he now did name the place, A model fo;- his philanthropic plans for good of all mar.- kind. Their education, social cast and equal brotherhood. Alas, for him! Alas, for us! The whole proved but a dream ! Stay! Round his children, faithful to their adopted land, .Assembled sage ai'd savant, though a continent they spanned. Scientists and educators gathered here on Posey soil. And the day is very distant when Owen's name will not be found Stamped indelibly and honorably hi book, or stone, or mind On the banks of the Ohio stands the city of Mt. Vernon, Town of wealth and transportation's queen. Once it was McFadden's BluflP and Landing fair For flat boats, heavy laden, steamboats, all watercraft indeed. Till growing, growing, it rose to height so great That from erstwhile Blackford and early Springfield too. It wrested County Seat of government and civic lead- ership. Hark! The War cry severs North and South! Men and boys march forth in battle's full array. POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT Bidding farewell to mother, wife and child, Leaving them watching, waiting, hoping for news from the front. Some gave their lives at Fredericksburg, many miles away. Others sleep at Chicamauga, 'neath the Hag for which they fought, A few returned to tell the story of bloodshed, heroism and glory. But the vacant chair, draped by loving hands. Stands mute reminder of the answer to a nation's call. Came peace and progress later, and Indiana And her Counties brave, waxed strong. Not the least of these is Posey, Once so ridiculed of men. Now the pride of all our people With her wealth of wheat and corn. With her love of education, and her faith in her fair homes. Here is a tribute to our dear Indiana ! Her star in the field of blue in Old Glory Twinkles brighter in our sight than any other! Brave are her heroes in war! Earnest her people in peace I Generous with the products of her soil, she helps to feed the world. First in politics, foremost in statesmanship and educa- tion. Ranking high in poetry, literature, art and song. She leads in all that stands for worth and progress great ! Let us go forth with greater zeal unto the outer day And show the nation, that Posey with loyalty will help, Use her strength of heart, and mind and will. To keep unblemished the purity of her record still. EPISODE I. First look upon the Indian in this primal scene. Ca- noes are their favorite watercraft. Their wandering lives teach the use of temporary abodes. They build their POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT tepee, and their camp fire. Love of color, ])ersonal adornment and very little amusement sii])ply enough of change to satisfy. Sometimes from out the quiet Council, the dusky Braves rise up in heavy war paint and adorned with well earned trappings, display their mystic rites. vSometimes the Squaws come from domestic duties to their ceremon- ial dance, or Indian mother chants a lullaby to soothe her infant child. At the least signal of alarm, the sands and grasses beneath their feet lie silent, and hurriedly extinguishing their fire, they steal away into the ever protecting forest. However some fur traders approach and the In- dians return, l)ringing their precious skins and pelts to exchange for trinkets, beads and bright colored fabrics. A boat appears upon the river. The French Mis- sionaries are coming, their voices raised in solemnly measured chant. Borne aloft are the sacred banner and their country's flag. They land and kneel about the wooden cross, symbol of their church and life. The trad- ers and the trusting Indians join them. Even as they kneel, the invading Red Coats march upon the scene on their way to the frontier. Hostile grow the Red ^len, till Harrison, the Territorial leader with his American soldiers appear and restore peace. The Holy Fathers then resume their journey down the stream. The soldiers march a\vay. The Indians re- tire to their forest homes. A few more years bring on the scene the hardy pioneer. Where tlie waters of the Ohio and the Wabash meet, comes Tom Jones, the first white settler, seeking a place to build a home. Falling in with a few Indians, he chooses and marries an Indian squaw. In ten years more the pioneers are coming from the east and south. Gen. William Henry Harrison, the first to buy the land around ]Mt. Vernon from the government, opens a land office. The first to buy from him is the ]McFadden family. From them they call this point 3IcFadden's Bluff, which later took the name, 10 POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT Mt. Vernon, in honor of the Father of our Country's country home. West Franklin was the scene of many comings, its river landing made it accessable to all parts of the county. Here came the well known hunter, Daniel Boone, the famous naturalist, John James Audubon, the earnest Circuit Rider too. The settlers bring with them the customs of their former state and times, thus introducing into the wilds of Indiana a variety of industries and sports. The spin- ning wheel, the loom, the early school, the social Husk- ing Bee and quiltings which the old fiddler turns into a frolic gay. But first the men go forth in buckskin strong, with axe and gun to clear the land and furnish food. The women guard the spot called home. Unfriendly In- dians trespass on this sacred ground, even, it is said, at least one woman's long and glossy hair with scalp is taken from her head. A little clnld is stolen, but re- turned. And so the story runs, so many hardships and priva- tions fill the days. Across the county they follow the Indian and animal trail to the old salt licks of Illinois, called the Saline Road, for necessities. Indian hostil- ities grow grave along the western frontier so that Slim Andy INIcFadden and some comrads of the county go off to help fight the Battle of Tippecanoe. EPISODE II. The Rappite band comes down the river in flat and keel boats in 1814 and build the town of Harmonic. In- dustrious, frugal, brave, they fill their waking hours with toil and prayer, working out their community wel- fare. In 1825, Robert Owen buys their finished town and the country round and attempts his Xew Soho e l System, S&CiuJC world renowned. He calls the town Xew HarSony^ About this time JNIt. Vernon is selected as the per- manent site for seat of county government. The coun- ty papers are removed from Springfield thither, the POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT 11 event celebrated on July 4th, 1825, a time when mar- riage license could be paid in skins or other commodities. On "Muster" day in the early part of 1816, there met a group of prominent citizens, of Mt. Vernon and the adjacent territory, at the house of "Tiddle de dum" McFadden's (near the foot of what is known as Store Street) for the purpose of selecting a suitable name for the town (Then called McFad- den's Bluff). After several suggestions had been given by the group, Samuel Rowe, then a young man, rose to speak and in the course of his speech said that his father had been a lieuten- ant under George Washington and that as Washington's home was named Mt. Vernon he thought it appropriate to name the town Mt. Vernon. This suggestion was received by all present with their hearty approval and they gave expression to their ap- proval by throwing their caps in the air and by passing around the jug. PAYING FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE. Tradition informs us of an incident in the early days of Posey County when money was not as plentiful as now that there appeared before the Clerk of the Posey Circuit Court, a couple desirous of procuring a marriage license and that when the license had been issued, the groom, having no money, paid for them with coon skins. Many scientists now arrive via ^It. Vernon coming to the geological headquarters lately established at y^ew Harmony with Dr. David Dale Owen at their head. jNIt. Vernon is flat boat headquarters for southern Indiana for many years and water craft of all kinds are affoat upon the river, from Indian dugout and canoe and French parogue, the famous steamboat, Belvidei-e, on which rode Gen. Lafayette, ^Irs. Trollope and Fran- ces Wright, to nuich more modern boats. Between the flat boats roustabouts and the ^It. A^ernon coopers, in 1883. an incident occurred, slight in itself but leaving a lasting impression, the HOOP POLE FIGHT, which made of Posey county the butt of many jokes for many years. EPISODE III. Years go by and Civil War is rife. ]Men are enlist- ing at recruiting stations, companies are forming and marching off" to the scene of action. Fife and drum 12 POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT lead the head of the cohimn, while old soldiers of the Grand Army of tlie Republic follow like a shadow of tlie past. The women left at home perform their own and their husband's duties , also their son's, and lead an anxious and a weary life. Boom of canon is heard and the Battle of Shiloh is pictured in the distance — across the river. The wound- ed are brought home to be healed. After five years of devastating strife, the broken ranks return. The war is over. Then politics engage the public mind. All Amer- ica joins in the stirring scene. In 1888 when Alvin P. Hovey, favored son of Posey, born here in a log cabin home, is nominated for Governor of Indiana the excitement grows intense. Private citizens and politicians, enthusiastic, throng the street at night. An election pole is raised and flag flung to the breeze. The old Court House bonds go up on funeral pyre. A parade forms as in days of "Auld Lang Syne," with Brass Band, Glee Club, flfe and drum, torches, transparencies, red light, tin horns and bells. A real TORCH LIGHT PROCESSIOX. Then one sad day the scene is changed. The cholera scourge appears and leaves the County Capital disconsolate. EPISODE IV. In the meantime 2()th Century progression is com- ing on with rapid stride. Education, Science, Useful and Fine Arts, Public Institutions, Agriculture, Ath- letics, Literature, all are bursting into blazing signals of success. Posey county with her townships ten pro- duce and present to Indiana the varied products of their development and prosperity. ^It. Vernon adds her precious casket of Centennial lore to her state's increasing toll. A bewildering vision of the hundred years just POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT 13 passing is brought before us in one final flood of people, music and of light. Out National Star Spangled Ban- ner is sung by one human voice. Flags unfurl on every side. Pride and patriotism prevail, while our willing slave, ELECTRICITY, lends radiant beauty to the passing scene. CENTENNIAL COMMITTEES. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Lemuel T. Osborn, Chairman; Prof. E. J. A strong box of Centennial valuables will be deposited in the vault of the First National Bank, to be opened at the next Indiana (Posey County) Centennial Celebration. The box will contain pictures of participants, a copy of the "Word Book", Minutes and Reference Books of the Secretaries, Press Notices, etc. A hope is expressed by the Committee now in charge that the President of the Bank (serving as custodian in 1916) may take the role of "Father Tim" in the celebration of that vear. POSEY COUNTY >X'ATER PAGEANT 29 NOTES. Posey County was named in honor of Thomas Posey, Governor of the "Territory" at the time it was created. He was the last of the Territorial Governors and a man of great dis- tinction and marked ability. The seal of Posey County, adopted by the County in 1835, in honor of Wm. Henry Harrison, and which bears his ini- tials, is reproduced on the cover of the Pageant Book and is still the official seal in use today. The Minerva Society, the first Woman's Club in the United States, was organized in New Harmony in 1859 by Miss Con- stance Owen Fauntleroy, grand daughter of Robert Owen — aft- erwards Mrs. James Runcie. Those coming from the forest, represent as nearly as pos- sible, the families found here, or who came later in the period. Note the guns used in the pioneer scenes — they are the products of the first crude gunsmiths in this country — many of them property of local people. The products carried by the young people from the differ- ent townships, and seen in the Finale, represent the chief agri- cultural contributions of the county, to the State. All those entering the pioneer scenes by flat-boat, raft or canoe, are descendants of the families who actually came to the county in that manner. Those entering by ox-cart, horseback and wagon, are like- wise the descendants of the families who came overland to this territory. Mrs. B. O. Hanby, (daughter of Dr. John Harper and Jane Dunn) who wrote the Mt. Vernon Episode of the County Pag- eant, is the granddaughter of James Dunn, of firm of Dunn & McFadden, and great-granddaughter of Robert and Lydia Dunn who came to Posey County from Ohio in 1808. 30 POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT "Darling Nellie Gray", the song which rendered a distinct service in the great movement that culminated in the Emancipa- tion Proclamation, was composed (both words and music) by- Benjamin Russell Hanby, father of Mr. B. O. Hanby of Mt. Ver- non, Benjamin Russell Hanby was born in Rushville, Ohio, 1833, graduated with honors, from Otterbein University at Wester- ville, Ohio, in 1856 — which year the famous song was written. He was also the composer of "Ole Shady" and many other popu- lar songs. The three McFaddens, Slim Andy, William and Andrew (tiddle-de-dum) are represented in the pioneer scene by Messrs. Nick McFadden, Geo. P. McFadden and Enoch C. Mc- Fadden. Mr. Wm. Maurer, who took the part of Circuit Rider in the Bloomington pageant, is a Posey County man and carries the part in this scene. Mr. Geo. Wm. Curtis represents the Greathouse and Cur- tis families of Point Township in the "Tom Jones" scene. Three generations of the Wade family, for whom Wades- vile is named, are represented in the pioneer scene. The Smith family of Cynthiana, for whom Smith Town- ship is named, represent the pioneer family of that name in the "Baptist Meetin' " scene. The entire Jaquess family of Poseyville, well known family of pioneers, represents Robb Township in the "District School" scene. Harmony Township's families are represented in the scene "Husking Bee" in the pioneer period of the pageant. All properties used in the pioneer scenes are the original articles preserved by different people throughout Posey County and collected by the directors of this period. POSEY COUNTY WATER PAGEANT 31 The powder flask and gun carried by "Daniel Boone" (Mr. Dan Williams) are original types of that period and are now owned by Mr. Wm. Russell, Mt. Vernon. The bible here used belongs to Mr. Aaron Greathouse and is 1 16 years old. Mr. Clarence Todd leads the men to the battle of "Tippe- canoe" is a descendant of the man who originally lead them and carries a gun that served in this battle. The gun and horn carried by "John James Audubon" (Prof. G. E. Behrens) are relics of a century ago, now owned by a Marrs Township family. Mrs. Edward Behrens wears a costume 125 years old, worn by her great-grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Calender Greathouse, grandmother of Mr. Chas. Greathouse. Little Miss Mary Alexander in the pioneer scene has the distinction of having four grandfathers and four grandmothers that were pioneers of Posey County. THE WESTERN STAR PRINT MT. VERNON, IND.
