Washington 20th Centviry Calendar A FEW SOCIAL CUSTOMS IN WASHINGTON. The President and his wife receive all calls and return none. The President gives during the season three State dinners, one in honor of the Cabinet, one to the Diplomatic Corps and one to the Supreme Court. The President gives four official or card receptions and one public even- ing reception. At these receptions his wife and the ladies of the Cabinet assist in line. The President does not accept invitations to dinners outside of the Cabinet circle. An invitation to a State dinner at the White House is supposed to be a command, and not declined unless in case of death or illness in one's family. Senators' wives make all first calls on the — Wife of the President ; Wife of the Vice-President ; Wife of the Chief Justice ; Wives of the Associate Justices ; Wives of the Ambassadors. The wives of the Senators call upon each other according to the service of their husbands ; the wife of the newly elected Senator making all first calls. Cabinet wives make all first calls on the — Wife of the President ; Wife of the Vice-President ; Wife of the Chief Justice ; Wives of the Associate Justices ; Wives of the Ambassadors ; Wives of the Senators. Each member of the Cabinet entertains the President and his wife, also the Cabinet, at dinner once during the season. The wives of the members of the House of Representatives make all first calls on the — Wife of the President ; Wife of the Vice-President ; Wife of the Chief Justice ; Wives of the Associate Justices ; Wives of the Ambassadors ; Wives of the Senators ; Ladies of the Cabinet. The wives of the Congressmen call upon each other according to the seniority of husbands' service in Congress ; the wife of the newly elected Congressman making all first calls. Avenue, N. E. The White House is on Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixteenth Street. The East Room is open to all visitors from 10 to 12 daily, except Sundays and legal Holidays. Those wishing to pay their respects to the President will be received at 3 o'clock P. M. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Callers on business will be received from 12 to 1 o'clock every day, except Tuesdays and Fridays. Upon the change of the seat of this Government from Philadelphia to Washington, the White House was the first public building erected. President Washington chose the spot and laid the corner-stone, October 13th, 1792, and, in company with his wife, inspected the building only a few days prior to his death, December 14th, 1799. President John Adams was the first occupant, year 1800. THE CAPITOL. The Capitol is situated on Capitol Hill. Open daily, except Sundays and holidays, from 9 to 4.30. Restaurants in the basement are open to the public. The corner-stone of the building was laid by President Washington on September 18th, 1793. The main building was finished in 1827. The corner-atone of the Senate and House wings was laid on the 4th of July, 18,51, by President Fillmore, Daniel Webster officiating as orator. These extensions were first occupied for Legislative purposes January 4th, 1859. STATE DEPARTMENT.
