L3IZ IN EXCHANGE New York Public Uhrary JUN 27 1912 /2 3 The Address of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati — and the Members from the other Societies present in Philadelphia To George Washington, Presi- dent of the United States Upon this auspicious day — and in contemplation of an ap - proaching public event, the most affecting, which can occur to us, either as men, as Citizens, or as your former fellow soldiers, we de- sire to congratulate, and address you. 4 As men we offer to you homage of a pure and heartfelt affection — As Citizens we express to you the gratitude, which results from a just sense of the highest obligation — and as fellow - soldiers we declare the respectful and inviolable attach- ment, which we feel to a beloved and venerated Chief This moment, in which America is to lose the services of her illus - trious Citizen, would indeed be in - consolable, did not the review of his wise, firm, and virtuous administra- tion, as Chief Magistrate, present a series of conduct, which it will be the pride and happiness of his sue - cessor to emulate and attain. With this consolatory reflection, we naturally associate the proud 5 sentiments that, in the instance of your dignified retirement from of- fice, our chief will exhibit to the world the rare and dignified spec - tacle that of^cial station and au - thority are not required to obtain and to continue the utmost distinc- tion among mankind, or to com - mand the highest degree of their admiration and applause. To that gracious Providence, whose goodness has heretofore preserved you a prime agent of human happiness, we prefer our fer- vent supplications for your present and future felicity. Signed on behalf of the Society Tho. Mifflin. Febr. 2 2d., I797- 6 To the Members of the Pensnylva - nia State Society of the Cincin - nati ; and the other State Societies of the Cincinnati at present at Phi lad' a.
