A^'^j'K'" *>^^\ /^'*v/'^'>I'" A:;^ so- G y^ WARDWELL. A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE ANTECEDENTS OF SOLOMON WARDWELL, WITH THE DESCENDANTS OF HIS TWO SONS, EZRA AND AMOS, WHO DIED IN SUL- LIVAN, N. H. BY Ottj , '^loa^t^' ELIZABETH WARDWELL STAY. SBEENPIKLD, MASS.: Press of E. A. Hall & Co. 1905. 11 o^' Oift Author U'anon) PREFACE. Perhaps some note of explanation should preface these few pages of "Wardwell Genealogy" as it is a very brief sketch, attempting to collect only the dates of the ancestors of Solomon Wardwell and the descendants of his two sons, Ezra and Amos, who resided in New Hampshire. Included with an invitation to attend a reunion of the descendants of " Solomon Wardwell " in 1904, was a request that I should furnish some dates or family history, if there were such in my possession, as very little was known of the early history of the family. So I tried to collect what I could hastily, and as the time then was so limited it was suggested that a leaflet be printed for all to refer to; and later on it was decided to try to bring the record down to the present gen- eration and members of the different families have kindly responded to my request for family records of more recent dates. I have also tried to trace the ancestry back to the first of the name who came to America and I think I have the line direct from Thomas Wardwell, our first ancestor, to the pres- ent date, having collected it from various sources, a date here and there. There may be errors which will call for charita- ble criticism, but I have endeavored to do the best I could under the circumstances without making an expensive work, as a perfect "Wardwell Genealogy" would mean more than I could attempt. The earlier generations settled in various localities of Maine, Connecticut and New Jersey, none of which I have tried to trace, but thought it best to include a memorandum of dates from the Boston records of the service in the Revolutionary War of the sons of Thomas (of the fourth generation) which may be of interest to some. I am greatly indebted to Miss C. H. Abbott of Andover, who kindly assisted me with her knowledge of Andover his- tory, which is very extensive. As I am no professional gen- ealogist, my only hope is that each may find something of interest and kindly pardon any unintentional errors. Sincerely yours, Elizabeth Wardwell Stay. WAR RECORDS. Some extracts from Boston records of the service in the Revolutionary War of the four sons of Thomas^ Wardwell. Solomon\ born 1743, was 32 years of age at the breaking out of the war. He marched with the militia under Capt. Henry Abbott, a private, April 19, 1775, one and one half days; traveled fifty miles; one day travel home allowed. (Record Vol. I, Page 193.) Received order for a bounty coat, Nov. 14, 1775, (Vol. 35, P- 172 and vol. 57, p. 4.) EzekieP, born 1750, was 25 years of age when war broke out. Pie was a minute man under Capt. Ben. Ames and Col. Frye from Andover, seven days, in camp at Cambridge, May 17, 1775; also acted as Guard under Lieut. Col. L. Bald- win, and June 22, 1775 as a Sergeant (Vol. 58, p. 32.) He was in the battle of Charlestown, June 17, 1775, with Capt. Ben. Ames, (Vol. 32, p. 172). He had a bounty coat payable to Lieut. He WAR RECORDS also served at West Point, three days travel, the regiment serving three months. He lived to be 84 years old. DanieP, born 1753, died 1782, went as a private of Capt. Henry Abbott's Co. to Lexington alarm, April 19, 1775. One and one-half days with 50 miles travel, and one day's travel home were allowed. Daniel died young and his brother Ezekiel married his widow, and one grandson, B. L. Ward well, is still living in Andover, age 89 years. Some of the Ward- wells have lived to great ages, over 100 years old. There are also records of cousins of the sons of Thomas* who saw service in the War. Joshua Ward well, born 1757, entered the army at 18 years of age. He marched under Lieut. John Adams at Lexing- ton alarm, April, 1775, he was also with Capt. Joshua Reed, Jan. I St, 1776, (Vol. 55, p. 14), also with Samuel Johnson's Co., Col. Johnson's Regt. Aug. 14, 1777, served to Nov. 30, making three months in the Northern army from Andover, drawing three months' pay from Andover 3rd Co., Oct. 18, 1779, and was also with Capt. Lovejoy and Col. Sam. Johnson, going from Andover to Cambridge via Billerica and spending three and one-half days. His brother, Joseph Wardwell, born in 1760, enlisted even younger than Joshua, with Capt. Samuel Johnson's Co., was with Col. Johnson's Regt., Nov. 30,' 1777, and four months, eight days in Northern Army from Andover, 13 days' travel being allowed, (Vol. 20, p. 102); 1 778-1 782 was with Col. With Jonathan Glover's Regiment Nov. 7, 1777, enlisted from Andover for Marblehead quota for three years with Col. Ben. Tupper's 5th Essex Regiment, Oct. 26, 1779. He enlisted for the war as 20 years of age though only 19, (but all the Ward wells were tall) 5 feet 10 inches. He served in Capt. Stephen Abbott's Co., loth Regiment, a Sergeant from 1 782-1 783; promoted ensign Jan. 8th, 1782. GENEALOGIES. Wardwell, Thomas," with his wife, Elizabeth, came from Great Britain to Boston, Mass., in 1633, accompanied by his brother William. Soon after they joined the first church in Boston, but being "Antinomians" and followers of Jno. Wheelwright and Ann Hutchinson, were dismissed from said church and they with several others banded together and organized an independent church at Exeter, N. H., which however continued but three years. Thomas was appointed justice and com- missioner to try small cases for that jurisdiction, where he remained a few years and returned to Boston, where he died Dec. loth, 1646. John Wheelwright was later reinstated in the Boston church, but William Wardwell inclined toward the Quaker religion and his children were brought up in that religious belief, ref- erence being found in New Jersey history, where they went later on. One informant says he lived in Wells, Me., for a short time, also, and returned to Boston, where he died in 1670. Children : ,4") Eliakim'', bom 1634. ii. Martha^, born, August, 1637. iii. Benjamin"'', born, February, 1639. 2. iv. Samuel-, born, Boston, May 16, 1643. 2. Wardwell, Samuel^ son of Thomas, is mentioned in John H. Hinton's history of the United States as fol- lows : "Even amidst those who had been overcome with the powerful temptation arising from the desire WARDWELL to escape the dreadful doom of those who persisted in their innocence, there were some who on mature re- flection did not hesitate to retract their forced confes- sion, though death looked them full in the face. Sam- uel Wardwell was the first who ventured to act so noble a part and he was immediately put on trial, con- demned and hanged." With seven others he was hanged for the imagined crime of witchcraft at Salem, Mass., Sept. 22, 1692. His property was confiscated for the use of the State. SamueP the martyr, and son of Thomas\ was one of the pioneers of Andover, Mass., where he married Sarah Hooper Hawkes, Jan. 9, 1672. She was living as late as 1703, when she with several others who had been condemned for witchcraft in 1692, but whose sentence had not been executed, petitioned the General Court to have their conviction removed and blotted from the records, which petition was granted. Mary, vSamueFs eldest child, though but nineteen years old, was one of the condemned. As a compensation for the sufferings of the family the Gen- eral Court voted to them, the sum of thirty-six pounds ten shillings and sixpence. No record is found of the death of Samuel's wife, but she was taxed as Widow Wardwell as late as 1699. Her sons Samuel and Wil- liam paid taxes in 1700, and from a deed given by his son vSamuel, who sold the homestead and moved to Connecticut in 1735, it is thought the site of his home is very nearly traced, as he was one of the pioneers of Andover, Children : i. He died 1776. His house stood near the center of the town of Andover and is the oldest site of any of the Wardwell homesteads surely known, though it is well understood that the house of his father, William, was located on the hillside, toward the east. Change of names of locations make it diffi- cult to trace with certainty, as there have been several different "Boston roads," since the settlement of the town. i. Damairs', born 1737; died 1767. ii. He died Sept. 20, 1825, aged 82 years. He resided in Andover, was a "cabinet maker," and the site of his cabinet shop is the present location of Phillip's Academy at Andover. He removed to Hollis, N. H., as shown by a deed to a farm of ninety acres,' for which he paid four hundred pounds, dated Sept. 26,' 1777. He removed to Packersfield, N. H., probably late in the year of 1784, as the church records show that he and his wife, Bethia, united with the church by letter in 1784; other papers show that he was one of the "selectmen" in 1786. He owned several pieces of land and built a new house on what was known as lot No. 2, range 8, in the northeast part of the town. Various papers show that he was one of the prominent citizens of the town. He continued his work as a cab- inet maker as long as he was able to work, and many pieces of his work are still to be found. On March 28 1798, he deeded the "lot No. 2, range 8" to his son Ezra m consideration of seven hundred dollars, and made his home there until his death. Children : i.
