In general, only such items have been used as were considered either honorary or interesting ; the rest are reserved for the Author of a Biographi- cal Dictionary of the Theta Delta Chi Society. The learned Professions are stated, when known to have been assumed ; but this has been done inadequately, from want of information. Lawyers are designated L. : and ll.b., when known to have taken that degree, though it is put only in a few of the cases where it belongs. The higher grades of Military, Political, Ecclesiastical and Educational rank are mentioned — but occasionally, for various reasons, lower ones also. Death is indicated by a star ; the manner is not stated, except when it was in the performance of duty or some special way other than the usual form of disease. The residence given is always where last heard of, and the name of the State is omitted when it is that in which the College is situated. Additional information of the sort already used is solicited ; particularly the correction of errors, especially those that consist in the mistaken attribu- tion of honors to the graduates, a liability the Committee has been on guard against, but perhaps in a few cases unsuccessfally, though there is nothing more discreditable to a college society than any intentional errors of this kind. All communications made to the Chairman of the present Catalogue Com- mittee, 13 Charles Street, N. Y. C, will be preserved in the form of notes to a copy of this Catalogue, and handed over to the next Catalogue Committee. FEANKLIN BURDGE, FEANK W. STEWAET, LUCIEN B. These are all the additions or corrections that it is considered desirable to make in this inconvenient place. The reader is requested to notice that as the work proceeded toward the chapters last printed (Alpha and Phi), a greater abundance and minuteness of items was indulged in, partly because there was more material, and partly because of a change of ideas about the amount of items desirable. This will account for the fact that in some of the chapters business pursuits are not mentioned. Another point the reader is called upon to notice, is that the dates of death are rarely given. The Committee had so few that it was thought best to leave the matter for the next Catalogue to be thoroughly attended to ; but it is regretted that this reason prevailed so far as to exclude some dates that were known. 1 :3' > ^ > > > i» > > > > > > > . > > > > ^ !> » > ""::> •> '''C.tsS^' > :> > > > > i> T> ".•> 3^')> > > •• > >> -^ ?
