Hp\a/ VopIc >l5Ih\/ strictly speaking, is not a Sum- &' a' nier Resort, but it is one of the healthiest and cleanest cities in the l-niverse, which, to- gether with the variety of amusements, conveniences, and independent style of living, makes it indeed a pleasant place to visit or reside, summer as well as winter. The present large number of vaudeville performances in the air, so to speak, affords for the roof gardens a profitable business, and creates for the public a pleasant way of being amused, whilst they may at the same time inhale the Ocean breezes wafted over the City every evening. Central Park is known far and wide for its ample and beautiful grounds. This great Park extends from 59th Street to iioth Street, a distance of 2 '2 miles, and its measurement from 5th Avenue to 8th Avenue will give it a width of more than one-half mile. It covers 860 acres. New York has other attractive Parks. Union Square is a very attractive public park, originally costing the City f 116, 000, having been purchased in 1833. Madison Square is another attractive spot, and in 1847 — when it was pur- chased, cost the City nearly $70,000. New York may well be proud of its magnificent hotels. No more commodious structures and well equipped hos- telries are to be found in America ; in fact, they are not surpassed in comforts and elegance in the entire world. a' -' mav be te accessible to New York and je reached by steamer or rail. There are imitators and imitators, but only one real Coney Island in the estimation of the masses which flock to that resort from New York and adjacent towns. Coney Island proper is the most democratic of all the resorts in this section. The attractions at Coney are seemingly as varied as are the people who are attracted by them, so numerous are variety shows, skating rinks, beer gardens, concert stands, toboggan-slides, shooting galleries, bathing resorts, merry-go-rounds, museums, aquariums, pop-corn and hot-sausage venders, brass bands, chute-the- chutes, &c. /iaobattaD Heacb '^ ■"'^'•^''"^^ ^'°''' ^^''' ^''"■'^ ^ S^ i. ijy Steamer or rail and is about a mile from Coney Island. Manhattan Beach is by far the most fashionable resort on the Island. Bathing arrangements are amply provided. The hours for music consume the greater part of the afternoons, as well as a portion of the evenings, and this pleasant feature of the Beach is reinforced by various amusements and pyrotechnic displays every night. J., as well as the masses. Its close proximity to New York and Philadelphia has made Long Branch a very popular place with the inhabitants of the Middle and Eastern States, but by no means does this signify a lack of patronage from other parts of the country. There is probably no more delightful seaside resort in America than Long Branch, and the untold wealth which has been lavished in the construction of handsome villas, and the embellishment of tiie grounds surrounding them, has caused the barren sands of this portion of the Atlantic Coast to blossom like a rose. #?t=^7 ^^^ B. Atlantic City is one of the most attractive all-round seaside resorts in America. It possesses an ocean front of such extent and beauty as has fallen to the lot of few of the numerous watering places in the world. The boulevard affords a driveway and promenade second to none. The location of Atlantic City is superb ; surrounded by dry sand and salt water, the health-inspiring (i'j;ilitic3 of the atmosphere arc of a subbtanliai character. The surf bath- ing is celebrated far and wide. The beach, with its gradual incline into the breakers, is as hard as a macadamized road. The breakers roll in majestically and disintegrate into a foaming surf. A corps of well-trained life-guards patrol the strand, or ride in life-boats on the sea limits of the bathing grounds, to aid any luckless bather who might need assistance.
