The earliest connected record of persons of this name that I have found begins in 1749, when, as the entiy reads in the Norton records, " Lewis Derry and Eleanor McHarnocli of Norton, jMass." applied for a marriage certificate. Norton was the north purchase of Taunton, incorporated 12 June, 1711, but whether Lewis or his parents lived in Taunton is not easy to determine, as the early records of tliat town were lost by a fire in 1838. The name in the Norton town and church records is usually written Derry, but also appears as Derrey, Dary, Darrey and Darbey. In a deed made in 1781 the name is spelled and signed Derry. In all other deeds and in all settlements in the Bristol County Probate Court since that date in which the name occurs, that I have seen, it is written Dary, and I conclude that to be correct, and that the other methods of spelling are due to the careless orthography of the period. The name Dery is common in the province of Quebec, Canada, and is generally borne by people of French descent and of the Roman Catholic religion. The late Pierre J. Darey, LL.D., formerly professor in the McGill L^niversity, iMontreal, was born in France, in Chagey Pays de Montbeliard, in the Department du Doubs and Department de la Hte. Saone, annexed to France in 1795. He was born a Protestant, and the religion of the locality was changed from Catholicism in the time of the Reformation by the preaching of Guillaume Farel, the friend of Calvin. The name Darey is common in that neighborhood, I am informed that it is also to-day common in La Rochelle, France, among Huguenot families, and that it is not unknown in Paris. Lewis Dary w^as a Protestant and renewed his baptismal covenant in the Norton Congregational Church, 25 May, 1760. Although he or his ancestors probably came irom England, I am of opinion that he was of French descent. One of the family traditions is that the emigrant ancestor was a silk weaver, who, finding no employment here in that occupation, became a farmer. At the revocation of the edict of Nantes many 4 DESCENDANTS OF LEWIS DART. French Protestants fled to England. An attempt was made to es- tablish the silk industry there with but little success. King James also tried the experiment in South Carolina, and many persons of French descent emigrated from England to that ])art of America, planted the mulberry tree and raised the silk worm. Their descend- ants are numerous in the South, and many Huguenots also came to New England before 1700. One of their characteristics Avas to change their names to English ones by translation or otherwise. The Darys intermarried with the Martins, Blandings, Carpenters, &c., names of unquestionable French origin. Another family tradition is that the first of the name in the coun- try were two brothers, English soldiers, who deserted from their regiments and remained here. While it is impossible to verify these statements, it is clear that they have been handed down through four or five generations and that they are not necessarily improb- able. In the "Roll of Battle Abbey," as printed in the New-England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 2, p. 32, appears the name of " Le Sire du val Dary." This document purports to be a list of the principal persons who came over from France with Wil- liam the Conqueror, and who took pai't in the Battle of Hastings, 14 October, 10G6, against the Saxon King Harold. The roll is of great antiquity, but has doubtless been added to by spurious names. Many of these persons were nobles in their native country, and such as are styled from their places would be understood to be lords and owners of such manors, &c., from whence their title is derived. John Clapton, Sheriff of Suffolk County, Eng., 1452, married Alice, daughter of Robert Darey of Maiden, Eng. The will of one John Sherman of Norwich, Eng., proved in 1661, gives a legacy to his half sister jMartha Darie. Florentius Vassall, born Jamaica, W. I., married Elizabeth and died, London, 1778. His will, recorded Canterbury Court, Lon- don, gives an annuity to his wife's sister, Hester Deare. The following names are found in New England : In Capt. Daniel Hinksman's Company of Boston, in 1681, was one Stiles Drarie ; and in Capt. Hutchinson's Company, Joseph Daries. Edward Deare of Ipswich, Mass., married Elizabeth Griffin, 3 March, 1660. John and James Derry were in Dover, N. H., 1693. In the expedition to Louisburg, 1745, in the 9th Mass. Regt., Col. Joseph Dwight, were Sergeant Eliakim Derry and private John Derry. DESCENDANTS OF LEWIS DARY. 5 The following records are not complete and may contain errors. I have found great difficulty in procuring the material on account of defective town records and general neglect in preserving family records. I hope that the collection will be of interest to members of the family, and that it will result in further investigations, and the bringing to light of additional lines of descent, and possibly earlier accounts of the family name. Communications will be gladly received. George Allen Dary, 53 State Street, Boston. LEWIS^ DAKY. Lewis Dary and Eleanor McHarnoch, both of Norton, applied 16 July, 1749, for a marriage certificate* No record of their marriage is found. Lewis Dary of Norton and Sarah Martin of Attleborough were published 26 July, 1751. Certificate of mar- riage is given 16 March, 1752.f Sarah, wife Lewis Dary, bap- tized 23 Aug. 1758. Lewis Dary renews baptismal covenant 25 May, 1760.$ Lewis Dary was probably a farmer, and his origin is unknown to the writer. His wife Sarah, who was probably the mother of his children, was the daughter of John and Expe- rience (Pratt) Martin of Attleborough. Experience was the widow of Henry Rew at date of her marriage to John Martin 1727. I find no record of the death of Lewis or Sarah Dary, but he appears to have been living in 1773.
