Robinson. — inspired teacher of scientific knowledge of the phenomena and philosophy of Spiritualism, given by and through the emanating source of Spirit Power — the controlling power of the angelic hosts of the seventh sphere. These are the divine and inspired teachings received from the Spirit-of-Truth of the astral world ; emanations — inspirational and aspira- tional— from the great Over-Soul — God — the In- finite Intelligence, or Supreme Power over hu- manity. 6 Divine Science SPIRITUAL GIFTS. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. For to one is given . . . the word of wisdom; to another the gifts of healing; to another the working of miracles; to an- other prophecy; to another the discerning of spirits. I Corin- thians, 12th Chapter. The following phases of mediumship have been developed in Miss A. M. Robinson, the au- thor, through Divine Power and by the aid of enlightened discamates, for the benefit of hu- manity : 1. Clairvoyance (subjective, objective, X-ray, and telepathic), or clear spiritual sight. 2. Clairaudience, or clear spiritual hearing. 3. Clairsentience, or clear spiritual sensing or feeling. 4. Magnetic - healing. 5. Message bearing. 6. Prophecy. 7. Inspirational writing. 8. Inspirational teaching. 9. Astral flight, or trips to heaven and back with descriptions. 10. Symbolism, or spiritual symbols and their interpretation. Physical mediumship with trumpet-speaking, materialization and etherealization, is in pros- pective stage of development. No mortal ever becomes perfectly or fully de- veloped; and there is no limit to one's possibili- ties. All life is characterized by progressive changes. — Editor. Divine Science "My soul is bathed in the sunbeams and rays from heaven." I was in the Spirit (clair sentience) on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice (clair audience), as of a trumpet, saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest (clairvoyance), write in a hook, (impressional writing), and send it unto the seven (all) churches which are in Asia (those receptive to truth). — Eevelation I: 10, 11. The truth shall make you free. — John 8: 32. 8 Divine Science INSPIRATIONAL PRAYER. By Miss A. M. Robinson. Almighty God, I thank thee for thy goodness and mercy; give me utterance to proclaim, thy truth. I thank thee for this spiritual gift and talent. Help me, I pray thee, to continue on with the good work, ever willing to give words of cheer and consolation to ease the hearts of bereaved mortals, burdened with distress. Help me to. enlighten the minds of unbelievers, to give strength to the feeble, heal the sick through spirit-power, and to do all in my power to unfold, so as to convince mankind that there is truth and reality in spirit-return to earth. Grant me power to give spirit friends strength to materialize, — that they may be recognized by their relatives and friends. God bless all who are endeavoring to do good unto others; may they research deeply into the depths of spiritual knowledge. May they be firm in their faith, ever willing to do as the spirit voice whispers in the stillness in the silence of quiet hours. May the good seeds be sown into the fields of knowledge. Keep us in that spiritual attitude and faith that leads the faithful to the beautiful realms of heavenly bliss. Divine Science Give us more faith; make thy instrument a bright shining light before the multitudes of hu- manity. We ask thy blessing upon the nations of the earth. In thy name we give the praise and glory. Amen. 10 Divine Science ^t^^t^y^^^^^^^^^^ THOUGHT CONSIDERATIONS. "Wisdom, Love and Truth. ^r Wisdom is the pathway which leads to the golden-gate-of -industry. Wisdom is the great soul-power which rules and governs all that is of supremacy, of the divine laws and truth of the Great Beyond. Love, friendship, and brotherly love, are conditions of the mind which vibrate through the atmosphere and are received by the re- ceptive mind of humanity, of recipiency— which means in plain language, to "love your neighbor as yourself" with a feeling of ten- derness and kindness in our heart toward every human being. »/lfflr^i^iifii^ !< Divine Science 11 INSPIRATIONAL SPIRIT MESSAGE. Given to Miss A. M. Robinson. "I am here to tell you that we enjoy your spiritual efforts. "Your aspiration, energy, and affirmations are excelling, and are a supremacy which excels, far over many. "We enjoy being present, listening to the true vibrations of divine thoughts, and love, coming from the pure fountain of life. "Your words of encouragement are to unfold and to uplift others — to give love and cheer to many down-hearted souls. Otherwise, to them, the last rays of hope would pass into oblivion." Spirit Friend. SPIRIT EASTER GREETING. To the Author. "We greet you, dear friend. We bring greeting from our spirit home. Many join us in sending greeting and blessings to their dear loved ones on the earth plane. "Our homes are decked with the generous fragrance of the beautiful Land of Paradise — honeysuckle with its sweet perfume, and the beauty of the sweet odorous lily, and fragrant carnations. "We sing praises to our King! Glory, Halle- luiah! Loudly let our voices ring, on this glori- ous Easter morn!" 12 Divine Science SPIRIT ETHEL. (Passed over at age five years.) (Chorus of Easter song.) "We are Kings of Kings, Lords of Lords! Halleluiah! Amen." TO THE AUTHOR. "We of the spirit-band want to thank you for striving so hard, and succeeding, in overcoming all forms of materiality and backward conditions generally. "This means progress, of course, going for- ward into new, fields and pastures green — for spiritual service and endeavor. 1 i God speed your efforts, while w T e stand ready to co-operate in Wisdom, Love, and Truth." Spirit-Band. INSPIRATIONAL SPIRIT MESSAGE Through Miss A. M. Robinson. Suggestions to the Mental Mind. "Our thoughts are atoms which vibrate through the atmosphere, and are received by the open and susceptive mind, acting momentarily upon the di- vine mind." Divine Science 1? The Brain Analyzing the Five Senses. "The brain, acting upon reason, mind, and thought, vibrating through every nerve and tis- sue — and the divine love flowing through the heart, bring a realization of spiritual truth and love, acting momentarily upon the divine mind, reason, and thought, — the brain analyzes the rea- soning thoughts." "Each individual should extend to his fellow man a helping hand, and to all humanity. "This was my doctrine while I lived on the earth plane/ \ Booker T. Washington. CONSOLATION. Why sad over material thoughts that can be banished through concentration and prayer? God's love for the faithful servants will subdue all cares and worry. Firmness, will-power, self- control, are the factors of a great master-mind. Weary not of tomorrow, for the Father never leaves thee alone. No, never alone ! Angels and friends hover around and about their loved ones, journeying along the pathway to success and ad- vancement in higher degrees of mediumship. Let the mind and soul be illuminated with bril- liant thoughts and soul aspiration, with the in- spiring love, peace, and the harmonious degree of happiness, which endureth, and is of everlast- ing j°y to those who put their trust in God, the 14 Divine Science Father, which brings the child of God to that everlasting peace, comfort, and happiness, soon dwelling in that kingdom with the angelic hosts forever and ever. E^y faithfulness to duty of the calling, which God has assigned to his workers or instruments, psychic gifts and power will be developed to a high degree of mediumship. The supernormal mind will receive, freely and forcibly, intuition and knowledge of the astral world more readily than the normal mind. May there be an awakening to unbelievers, to whom Spiritualism has been misrepresented as a false doctrine. . . . We humbly beseech thee, our Heavenly Father, to bless and protect our friends and message-bearers of the earth-plane. SPIRITUAL PHILOSOPHY. Spiritual philosophy teaches all that is true ; one becomes spiritualized and adopts the law of di- vinity — of Infinite Intelligence. The soul is based upon a solid foundation, receiving and maintain- ing the good discipline of spiritual teachings, giv- ing our earnest desires for the best spiritual in- telligence, to impress on our mind all that is in- tellectual and pure in thought, to cultivate mind power, so that the subconscious mind will be en- abled to reach out into the astral plane. Let those who are true to themselves put forth every effort to live a Christ-like life. Divine Science 15 When messages are received, truthful impres- sions will be received, to be both, helpful and ben- eficial to others. Let good spiritual-minded mor- tals instruct those minds of good habits, to draw them nearer and nearer to the spiritual knowledge and phenomena of Spiritualism. Mortals' minds are being drawn to reasoning thoughts and good vibrations from pure hearts and minds, which, with velocity, are accurately received by the receptive mind, unconsciously re- ceived by the subconscious mind, which is made recipient to the conscious mind. The brain re- searches the science and philosophy of Spiritual- ism, which brings reasoning ideas and knowledge of science, philosophy, psychology, intellectual teaching, scientific brain phrenology, etc. Science is characteristic of man's scientific researches of the earth and heaven above to gain knowledge of the planetary system and starry heaven, the distance from earth and the inhabi- tants of each solar system, and research of the zodiac's stars and planets, including the moon and those which are largest in circumference, — sci- ence, theologically speaking, the greatest of theo- logical knowledge and intuitive brain force. The road-to-success is in seeking diligently for the highest and best of spiritual intelligence and for the best in social life. Mediations on spiritual subjects produce a powerful effect, which lead on to advancing and aspirational standards, giving energy and force to the mind, soul and body. 16 Divine Science Let mortals give praise unto God for the bless- ing of having the knowledge of spirit-return. In silent thought we retain the peace of mind that gives that soul-inspiring energy, enabling us to press onward with shield and banner, with will- ingness to aid the needy ones, and with unselfish* ness to give out the words of truth, that vibrate through the atmosphere, and reach the receptive brain and mind. Good seeds that are sown will reap the abund- ance of harvest. During a day of rest and tranquillity I send out my sweet thoughts and memories to those who are still hardening their hearts and making their minds a blank to the word "Spiritualism," — liv- ing in a form and fashion for the world at large — with "hurry-flurry to-and-fro," taking life as it comes to deafen the still small voice within. But the angel messenger waits patiently on that soul that is so precious in the sight of God, the Infinite Intelligence, whose love and power can make mortal life so beautiful and happy — to re- ceive that pure, sweet essence of spiritual love, and to view the grandeur in the astral realms 'mid angels and archangels, who unveil the mys- teries of hidden powers that are within. Let us continue to pray, with faith for strength, and self-mastery over wrong-doing in the sight of the Almighty. . . . May thy presence ever be with us and guide us in the path of righteousness. Amen. Divine Science 17 ADVANCING CIVILIZATION LEADING TO HIGHER SPIRITUALITY AND KNOWL- EDGE OF SPIRIT-LIFE, AND SPIRIT- KNOWLEDGE APPLIED TO EVERY-DAY NEEDS. This is a prophecy, a vision of the near future, when mankind will have greater love in their heart and soul for mankind; then it must neces- sarily follow, as night follows the day, that there cannot be any indwelling enmity to arouse the people of earth to mortal combat. Art, education, good breeding and ethics will have a start for- ward with strong impetus. This applies to my race as well as to all others. So let the star of freedom shine with unap- proachable glory! And may our Heavenly Father look down upon us and bless us in our laudable efforts of progression. BLESSED SPIRIT KNOWLEDGE. Blessed be the word that triumphs over the land, and brings forth victorious victory, which will triumphantly bring forth the truth and knowl- edge of Spiritualism and spirit-return, to be wel- comed by the multitude of unbelievers. Then mortals will realize what has been gained by prayerful thoughts and right-living, by good seeds sown and deeds done unto others by the upright and pure in heart ; their good, pure thoughts hav- ing vibrated through the atmosphere with ve- 18 Divine Science locity, penetrating the good mind, and received by the receptive mind, consciously and uncon- sciously. So it is with delight God's instruments ear- nestly seek to fulfill the laws and doctrine of Spiritualism. On earth, as it is in heaven, we wish to be led by his dear hand, to go on and upward, to proclaim the beautiful truth and doc- trine that is put before us. We gain daily the power upon us ; we magnify the symbolical views of the astral world. On our brain is mapped the views of the celestial heaven. It is soul-food for the advancement of the progressive work. The beauties and wonders of the celestial city will be manifested to be monopolized for the unf oldment and uplif tment of humanity. In your daily life be truthful and just harmon- izing with the inner self; the subconscious mind unfolding the ethics to the conscious mind. Re- joice, and be glad of being developed to that standard to catch the glimpse of the spirit-hosts, and with high aspiration view the astral world, where spirit forces do hover around and about us ; exceedingly glad are we to know that we can communicate with our dearly loved ones and friends. How happy are they who can impress our brain with aspirational thoughts and ideas of lofty and inspirational knowledge of occultism. Let mortals seek all that is good and pure to be acceptable and perceivable for spiritual iden- tification. When founded on spiritual truths, Divine Science 19 readily do mortals attract the highest and noblest of the spirit world. Praises be to the heavenly hosts for their su- premacy — who dwell in the land of holiness, the highest sphere of aspiration. The right revolt of materiality should super- vise all limitations which uplift or defile human nature and character, which intermingle and be- set the reality of just and true ideas and thoughts. Dear hearers of spiritual truth, let the spirit power of the Divine Intelligence ever guide you and keep you in the path of light and truth. The knowledge of astral worlds will never be re- moved from the minds of those engaged in sci- entific research. HAVING RECIPIENCY OF SPIRIT- KNOWLEDGE.' The indwelling spirit within teaches mortals that love which is uplifting and elevating to the brain, mind, and thought-reasoning to the aspira- tional plane, to research the beauties of the astral world, and scientifically interview the philosophy of life and all its mental ideals, while in the mortal bodv. \i Let the brain, mind and soul be susceptible, so that the spirit within can be intuitive to the mind and to the subconsciousness of all that is spirit- ually intellectual to wisdom's ways and knowl- edge of all that is pure and beautiful in the spirit- land. 20 Divine Science The storehouse of righteousness has its bounti- ful supply for the soul-seekers, to uplift and mul- tiply wonders of God's wisdom and knowledge, to replenish and satisfy the intellectual brain, mind and soul. The soul consciousness never sleeps nor slum- bers ; it is ever awakening to the voice within, to messages and impressions from the exempt from mortal cares of life, and who are now rejoicing over their awakening into the spirit land, and becoming able to return to earth with messages of love and cheer to comfort their dear ones on the earth-plane, — to tell us that there is life after transition (so-called death). HDIFYING THOUGHTS. Godly thoughts are like food to the spiritual mind and as an illuminated force can carry one to the astral plane, to which the travel is gratifying; much joy is experienced when viewing the pic- turesque scenery of the heavenly spheres. We can observe, with the spiritual eye, the exalted saints and friends of the Ethereal, dressed in their white and purple robes, having put off the mortal body and put on immortality. When we view the kings, and priests of the priesthood, and shepherds, we are exalted, and we become emotional. We are shown the mis- sions of those of the heavenly sphere. We can and do receive power from those exalted saints of the celestial sphere. Divine Science 21 As we view the spirit- world with the spiritual eye, our souls and being are illumined with spir- itual grace. COMFORTING THOUGHTS FROM SPIRITS. As spiritualists, we are exalted beings of the Most High — the Supreme Intelligence. The faithful ones, with their merits of high standard, are loyal and true to their spirit friends and loved ones. Their words are words of praise, soothing and penetrating to our soul, which brings happiness into our homes ; for love thoughts will reach many unknown homes of sorrow and discontented minds. Kind words and good thoughts come to us, as the stillness of the night passes on to the dawn of a new 7 day. The soft breeze brings the comforting good thoughts to us, sent out in their prayers of love, happiness, peace, and good will to all mankind — which permeate every receptive mind. It is a blessed assurance that our aspirations will be to try to equal the most high or advanced spirits. All true followers will receive the blessing from the most high spirits of the seventh sphere. . . . We humbly beseech thee, our Heavenly Father, to bless and protect our friends, and message bearers of the earth plane. May their work be as one of the greatest, to enlighten the 22 Divine-Science multitude on the principles of humanity. Give strength and power to the spirit-band, so as to impress the minds of mortals with the right atti- tude to accept the knowledge and wisdom of life beyond the grave — that there is reality of life after transition (so-called death). Let us live in hopes that this doctrine .will soon be as eminent as the ocean is long and wide ; and that there will be none to molest the true workers of spiritual truth, who seek to uplift many bowed heads. Help them to impart the teachings of Spiritualism, to become as testimonials and to acknowledge before the world that we as mortals do return to earth, after we put on immortality. The truthfulness of spirit phenomena shall spread its wings far and near, as the eagle soars over earth; so will spirit messages and inspira- tional writings be read by many unbelievers. Many who rebel against mediums and spiritual- ists, will testify and give evidences of having been convinced of identity and proven tests, by receiv- ing truthful messages, given to them by their de- parted relatives and friends and by positively acknowledging the truth of spirit-life and spirit- return to earth. AUTUMNAL GBEETINGS. What a grand thought — to know thyself — as a being of noble and beautiful aspiration! . One can sense the glory of God from the heavens above which thrills the soul-being with divine blessings, Divine Science 23 penetrating the mortal body with soul-power show- ered down upon him through the astral spheres. The autumnal greetings give aspiration and in- spiration to the mind and soul. The soul of the mortal body is precious in the sight of God. We now are viewing God's work of supreme power in natural changes, when the foliage is shown in the most beautiful and attractive colors, near and far. The masses of solid rocks tell with unspoken utterance of its maturity and of its origin, while their depth is unknown to man's knowledge of technical study. The changing seasons are of divine origin, yet they come to us in a material way. The fall season, bringing forth nature in sym- bolical form of many beautiful and rare colors of autumn, gives us a feeling that is so beautify- ing and angelical, fall foliage and the green velvet coating, soft and soothing, giving strength to the eye, to aid concentration of thought. The fields on the hillside give echo to our noble thoughts of high aspiration, and we give praise to God from whom all blessings flow. Mother Nature has lengthened the season with bright and clear sunny rays of sunbeams on the green velvet cover of the fields with mixed colors of brier bushes of tinted leaves, forming a pic- turesque garden given to us by God, so beautiful to behold. The maple, tall and stately, of golden hue, her face beaming heavenward, seems to speak, saying : God's golden sunlight smiles upon humanity and 24 Divine Science shares his power, love, strength and wisdom unto those whosoever will come into the fold of spir- itual unfoldment, as the foliage, so beautiful in colors, blend so harmoniously to observation. When mankind becomes so spiritualized as to commune with God and the spirit-world, then and only then will the soul be beautified as the golden harvest, visualized by the spiritual eye. We, di- vine in nature, absorb that infinite power and help to radiate divine strength and healing force to all mankind ; by doing so, we lose nothing of our- selves, but become stronger by the spiritual ex- ercise. Let us see what these colors will symbolize to us while viewing the autumnal tint of variegated hues of foliage. Symbolically, red or maroon, encircled by green, is light, strength, and high aspirations ; green, as a staff of righteousness, as Moses leading the chil- dren out of the Red Sea to wisdom and knowledge of God ; golden yellow tints, — noble brilliant char- acter, ideas and thoughts of the great I Am, all combined in one glorious Hallelujah. Amen! WISDOM. Wisdom, the words of the rarest fruit from the Supreme or Infinite Intelligence — God — the ema- nating source, through which flows in its chan- nels, all spiritual phenomena. The spirit of the living God, the divine power, is handed down to us by the spirit hosts, who, Divine Science 25 when in mortal body, in their daily lives through character, deeds, and actions (by the aid of their auric atmosphere through their emanated force and power), prepared for their abiding place-of- places, and happiness, to live forever with the saints, in heaven. Wisdom, then, is the true principle for serene upliftment, to manifold and to manifest the great god-given power of the universe. Knowledge is the retaining recipiency, enter- ing into the doctrine of amity through the laws of divine teachings of truth, goodness and love — the path that leads to the realms of glory. THE HUMAN AURA. The human aura generated to protect us, gives us clear instinct, clairvoyantly, to sense, to hear, to see, and to prognosticate the human being without any effort upon the mental or psychic in- telligence. Creating an atmosphere about the mortal being, the personal magnetism is surrounded by an auric belt. This auric atmosphere is so keenly felt by the psychic who has developed this emanated aura and becomes as solid and as firm as a moun- tain in height and in circumference, therewith re- sembling the condition of a planetary atmos- phere. The human aura has the distinct character of the aurical emanation condensed into understand- 26 Divine Science ing of the supreme phenomena of the spiritual being. Individuals may possess this aura by being susceptible to wisdom, knowledge, and principles of divine law. First, create within thyself a clean heart and an upright spirit. Second, have brotherly love for all mankind, then serene happiness will bring to you all, re- quired wisdom and grace, with faith— the key to all Infinite Intelligence. SPIRIT THOUGHT WAVES. The experience of the human family, my friends, one might say is one of the characteristics in life that makes mankind realize the pathway to success is not always sunshine. One's efforts must be keenly looked into in a deep sense of spiritual ideality. The future is to be analyzed; experiences are to be carried out through thought waves when in silence; the senses are in activity, experiencing most marvelous energy. Likewise all other duties in life are most conscious in man 's understanding. Man's brain and physical body experience the vibrations unconsciously from sources of mortal's mentality. The subject given as power of thought of mind, psychologically, is the power of the mind and the souL Spiritualism, affirmed by many so-called Spir- itualists, is not detrimental to the scientific and divine laws of divinity. When in, harmony with Divine Science 27 the spirit forces, the soul reasoning consciousness is purified by the infinite power and love from the all-powerful, all-good, — God, the great redeemer, who gives life, light, happiness, joy, within the soul, so that mortals can give out to others the messages received from their spirit friends and relatives. We rejoice with exceeding gladness over the psychic gift and power that enable us to receive messages from spirit friends and relatives and give them out to the human family. We pray for a clearer and better knowledge of the beauty of the astral w x orld, — while humble and submissive, ever willing to obey the spirit voice, that gives pleasant and happy thoughts, so beneficial and elevating to the psychic mind, permeating the soul to the highest aspirations. What is aspiration? Why, the most ardent de- sire for the noblest excellency of thought waves to descend from the exalted saints, from the priesthood of our Father, God,— thought waves to be impressed upon our minds from the angels and exalted saints. Aspiration then is our most ardent wish for God's pure love to manifest itself through our reasoning conscious and subconscious mind, for thus our soul is filled with spirit-power, which regenerates and invigorates, and makes easy the way for us in trials and cares we look upon as a part of our life's burdens. In exercising more faith, the still small voice 28 Divine Science within gives eheer and courage to press onwatd and upward. Our spiritual being is so filled with angelic, en- thusiastic soul-food, intuitionally given us by the exalted spirits of the heavenly sphere. SPIRITUAL SOUL INFLUENCE. Spiritual food to the soul, brings vibrations of the astral plane to the receptive brain and occult mind, whereby the messages are received from guiding angels and relatives, giving new vigor, encouraging ideas, and that unbounded strenth to mortals of the earth, and aiding their footsteps on the pathway to the approaching achievement long searched for. We mortals are glad of the joy and pleasure which we receive, and with which we are so pleas- urably blessed from daily experience. Great knowledge is gained through silent concentration, thought waves, and earnest prayer, which give spirit power to view the astral world, and to give the fulfilling of God's word written in the testi- monial book of the prophets, kings and priests. The conscious mind and subconscious mind rea- son with the spiritual soul-influences. Ethereal- ization is formed through magnetism and mind power of spiritual attitude, through prayer and faith, and soul communication with God the Father, who blesses his followers. Spiritual il- luminations brighten the pathway on our journey to spread the glad tidings of spiritual blessings, Divine Science 29 which have been received from advanced studies of psychic gifts and occult power. Praise be unto those who diligently seek for spiritual knowledge day by day, with their hearts uplifted to God, submissive to the divine law, of the doctrine of divine truth. An answer to the earnest seeker's prayer, is the awakening of spirit intuition in the soul of the mortals in earth life, inspirational and impres- sional idealities of Spiritualism and life after so- called death. We are guided intuitively by our spirit friends by being passive and submissive, and earnest in our endeavors. The spirits are waiting patiently to commune with their dear relatives and friends ; they are eager to reach their loved ones. Spiritual knowledge is instructive in all con- ditions of life, both spiritually and materially. We are guided by our spirit-band. We go forth, en- deavoring to teach the truth, being pure in heart and in mind, and upright in our daily walk in life. Let us be true to ourselves; and let the light of our soul illuminate our being. ONWARD AND UPWARD. The mission of God's instruments is to go for- ward, out into wide tunnels of prejudice, among humanity to proclaim, that I am the giver of all knowledge, wisdom, and truth — that there is but 30 Divine Science one God, the Infinite Intelligence, maker of heaven and earth. All who call upon Him in prayer and faith, be- lieving, shall not call in vain. His mercy en- dureth forever and ever. Go forth with shield and banner, proclaiming the great spiritual truth, that there is life after SO-CALLED DEATH! The truth, wisdom, and knowledge of God, come to those who diligently seek after the truth of life beyond. In the stillness we welcome our spirit-band to impress our mind with words of divine truth, with inspired aspiration, and views of the astral world of heavenly bliss and joy. Let the followers of truth and divine doctrine be ever prayerful and mindful of the -white mansion of brotherly love. The spirit-band of the angelic host enters the science to manifest their intelligence in many ways; in phenomena, conditions of mental and spiritual thought, good habits, and spirit-power to commune with relatives and friends on the earth plane. Let the inspired truth enlighten the soul of man of this great truth and knowledge of spirit-return and life after death — so-called death. Preparation is necessary for this life and life hereafter. Rejoicing occurs over the awakening and the spiritual knowledge of their loved ones on the earth plane. So let us rejoice over spiritual gifts and power to communicate with the angel friends Divine Science 31 of the spirit world, who watch over us and com- fort us in our daily struggles of life. We love to listen to the still small voice, which comes to us in the stillness of the night; the angel hosts instruct our soul during our slumber, so as to prepare their instruments for their daily oc- cupation. We give thanks to Almighty God, whom we ask in earnest prayer to guide and protect us from all temptations and bodily harm. God give our dearly loved ones power and strength to guide us in our pathway to success. Amen. 32 Divine Science igi^egggigQS^ THE CHRIST FOUNDATION. Psychology of the Christ-foundation of Spiritualism is ever of truth and righteous- ness. Let the heart rejoice over having the power to overcome all the obnoxious—like the temptation-of-the-world, — its sociability, hilarity, and vices that defile good morals and Christ-like principles. We Spiritualists, who stand upon a solid rock-of-ages, enclosed by the Saviourjs mantle of love and peace, and ever blissful overwhelming ecstasy, have a crown-of -blessing placed upon our heads for faithful duty and perseverance. We fear no evil; God and the angel-world § will ever guide and protect those who walk in the light-of -truth and purity, — courageous in all efforts put forth. . . . May the heavenly dew of blessing be showered down upon the faithful ones. Amen. a Divine Science 33 NATURE'S RESURRECTION. Wintry days are passing and lengthening days of the gentle spring are approaching, making the chilly winds grow warmer each day; the budding of the trees commences, the foliage is spreading its leaves, and the green grass is beginning to show its velvet cover; we see God's life and power in these, and in every flower and creeping thing. . . . Mother Nature gives to the blossoms their sweet odors, to fill the atmosphere with fragrance. Oh, how beautiful are the roses of many colors ! How fragrant are the perfumes in early spring- time! The colors of the Jaqueminot and the American-Beauty roses indicate " power" and " strength"; their sweet fragrance perfuming the air with love and peace. The sunflower, its stately, beaming face, receiv- ing light and strength from the sun, produces ex- pressions from its color that disclose spiritual knowledge. The violet, with spiritual intelligence in color, gives hope and constancy to our loyalty, faithful- ness, and trustworthiness in our phenomenal work and in exercising our occult gifts and powers. The lily, with bell of golden pistils, manifest- ing purity, peace, and sweetness of life, sends out sweet, pure thoughts from the garden of Geth- semane. 34 Divine Science NEGLECTFUL TO DUTY. My hearers in mortal life, there are seasons when one should be cautious in taking on condi- tions that are harmful; therefore, one should be careful about their environments, undertakings, and moral habits, so as to avoid spoiling the beau- tiful pathway. Be not dismayed, for God will take care of his instruments. Prayerful concentration is one of the best mot- toes in life, in which mankind is elevated in justice to the laws of humanity, equalizing the minds of mortals, who have not yet felt the rays of spir- itual light and truth in their soul, with harmony and happiness, while those of the immortal life are waiting patiently for the awakening of their spiritual insight, so as to see them numbered among the spirit-band and illuminated by spirit- power. LOVE IS TRUTH. Truth relates to all that which is truthful. The eye of the upright doth see only that which is loyal and beautifying in a spiritual sight. The pathway is made clearer and more beauti- ful each advancing day, which brings us in closer contact with our spirit-band. We realize more and more the truth iii spirit-return; and our hearts are filled with spiritual love and truth that thrills our being. We send out that vibrating love to all humanity just as we receive the locomotion of electricity, Divine Science 35 and telepathic messages which revolve through the atmosphere. The messages are heard distinctly and clearly by those whose minds are receptive and true. The spiritual eyes which seek and research for the truth, receive only truth! MEDIUMISTIC GIFTS AND POWERS. God, the all-powerful, the all-knowing, the In- finite Intelligence, is the first to have knowledge of. Faith, prayer, truthfulness and steadfastness are requisites to seek the true wisdom and knowl- edge of spirit life and spirit-return to earth. Spirituality and Spiritualism bring mortals to a reality of true happiness in life ; they purify the mind with loving thoughts of sweet repose, gen- tleness, and right living. Concentration in the stillness brings harmoni- ous melodies to the ear. The soul is in rapport with God and the angel world. In the silence the sweet, soft whispers come from loved ones to give courage and strength to develop our gifts and power. Within the conscious and subconscious mind is soul-power, which researches and visual- izes the astral world. Forms and visions are manifested to the spiritual eye, produced by soul- power and physical phenomena. Materialization is the atoms of brain cells vi- brating into thought-waves and inspiration formed by soul-power into etherealization. The brain, 36 Divine Science mind, and soul are of one unit when translated from the body, to put on immortality, awakened to the bliss and joy of eternal life; their mortal career has ceased, and their spiritual sense of immortality is to seek to help the unenlightened to the awakening of spirit-life after transition from earth-life, to advance in progression to an active sense of duty. SPIRIT MESSAGE. Received by Dora Robinson. "Local habitations of men may feel the rum- bling of earthquakes, which cause fear of destruc- tion. So may the ranting of clergymen disturb the equanimity of members of their congregation over morbid thought of death. "Nevertheless, let me say as one who was for- merly a Christian Evangelist, — now a spirit for truth only, — that one need have no apprehension over so-called death, because it is only a change of base. And in spirit-life one finds himself sur- mounted by beautiful sights of heavenly glory and one will unhesitatingly proclaim the spirit truth — and to people who will gladly hear it." (Spirit) Rev. S. N. Peroneau. Divine Science 37 REALITY OF SPIRIT-RETURN. Reality of spirit-return to earth is the phe- nomena of truthful identity through which one can positively recognize spirit visions and etherealized forms of spirit relatives and friends, viewing them as in the mortal. With the same tenderness toward us, they give their prayerful thoughts and messages of bless- ings and words of cheer, for we do fully appreci- ate their love and watchfulness over our mortal bodies. We are truthfully stating that there is reality in spirit-return to earth, after the soul has taken its flight to the heavenly sphere. ^L'<^ -■■■■■:. Divine Science 41 ! ' '/////A P INVOCATION With hands uplifted, let us repeat the follow- ing: Through the open doors of the Spheres-of- Truth, may my soul travel and bathe in the foun- tains therein — forever and forever. Amen, and amen. ^///-4-glI*-r\^ _ ¥ 0, thou Divinity-of-Truth, unto thee do I come, desiring the light and the power to guide me safely through the paths of the present year. May my own and blessed angel-band be stronger than ever before. May I rise still higher, above all that would dare enter in and hinder my progress. I pray for progress, strength, power, and greater understanding — in the name of Spirit-of- Truth. Amen, and amen. 42 Divine Science THE CREATIVE BEING. Our Father, who art in Heaven — hallowed be thy name — the Infinite Intelligence, the all- powerful, the all-seeing one, guides us by day and night, giving to us the daily food of soul aspira- tion, with zeal and courage to fight manfully on- ward to reach our heart's desire. It is our earnest prayer day by day to achieve all that is gratifying and of high spiritual intelli- gence. We go forth waving the banner of truth and light, expressing what is gained by being obedient and faithful to God and the spirit-band. We can tell of the zeal and characteristics de- veloped through ordeals, whereby we become en- thused with greater efforts to scrutinize the phil- osophy of Spiritualism. NOONDAY MESSAGE. E'ehold, I come to teach and instruct mortals of the way that leads to the land-of-grace-and- beauty. I give unto thee the blessings from God, our Father who art in heaven — that God's chosen in- struments will teach the doctrine that is laid out before them. Oh, that peace might come to the minds of mankind, and let spiritual truth reign within! Let the sunlight into their souls, which brings the mind into a receptive and reasoning condition ! Good thoughts and deeds express the loyalty and character of manhood, of one who is elevated Divine Science 43 above all debased ideas and principles. The brain illumines the mind and thought to scientific knowledge etherealizing the body soul and mind out into the astral world, magnifying the auras of the Infinite Intelligence, and beautifying the brilliancy and beauty of variegated colors. No mortal tongue can describe the magnificent gran- deur of visualized paintings, sceneries and de- signs. Mind is the source in which the brain velocity reaches the highest intelligence of scientific re- search, of philosophy of Spiritualism, scientific views of natural history, psychology and the phe- nomena of Spiritualism. Purity and power are the essentials of soul- power, force and energy, that research into the spiritual realms, for all that is intellectual, bright and beautiful. When good deeds are done unto others, they are like seed sown in rich soil; they reap golden harvests of success and abundance of spiritual in- tuition, and occult power will be developed. SPIRITUAL ETHICS. The mind is the source in which the brain ve- locity reaches the highest intelligence of scien- tific research of philosophy of spiritualism, scien- tific views of natural history, psychology and the phenomena of Spiritualism. Purity and power are the essentials of soul- power, force, and energy that research into the 44 Divine Science spiritual realms for all that is intellectual, bright and beautiful. When good deeds are done unto others, they are like seed sown in rich soil; they reap the golden harvest of success and abund- ance of spiritual intuition, and occult powers will be developed. The road that leads to success consists of up- rightness in daily life and ever-mindfulness of our Creator — God, the maker of heaven and earth. Let the sun shine into the soul, to seek all that is pure and good. THE KEY TO HAPPINESS. We come with words of consolation and cheer. It is not an easy matter to research and build up the house of spiritual growth in which is the temple of the Infinite Intelligence, the temple in which the mortal body takes its abode. There are ups and downs, and daily cares, foes, strifes, and temptations to overcome, which go to make the perfect man and woman. Then, when we reach our harvest of success, what joy and happiness we can express to others, telling what has been gained through patience, expressing our heavenly thoughts to others. Our good thoughts penetrate the receptive minds of many. As an example of true Spiritualists, we attract to us unbelievers and skeptics, who become inter- ested in the messages given from time to time, and finally become one of us. We congratulate those who are not envious, but broad-minded, for theirs is exceeding happiness Divine Science 45 of mind, manifesting an earnest endeavor to press onward and upward through every obstacle, with. implict faith in God,, whose power is felt by bless- ings showered down upon his flock. Spiritualism is the key to happiness and eternal life, to view the beauty of the astral world; the beautiful river of life and the Garden of Eden, with flowers of variegated colors; the king and royal host of the celestial heavens. We are triumphant in our noble endeavors, striving to gain knowledge and truth from the world of wisdom. Now, my friend, be of cheer, for God's power is sufficient for all! CHRISTMAS-TIDES. Christmas-tides bring joy, peace and happiness to the soul, rejoicing over the past months' ben- eficial help to mediums, aiding them psychically to a high degree of mediumship, manifesting il- luminated views of picturesque sceneries of the astral world, elevating to the five senses, whicli bring mortals in close communion with the ex- alted saints of the heavenly sphere. The good seed sown among the multitude of the human family will bring forth a rich harvest. The seed may sprout, and resprout, but eventually an abundant harvest in spirituality will be the result. Let us each day be more positive, so as to re- ceive the soul-inspiring messages from our dear, loved ones and our spirit-band. 46 Divine Science INSPIRED THOUGHT. Knowledge of the Infinite Intelligence and of the spirit world is both intellectual, spiritual and intuitional. Spiritual knowledge also is soul-inspiring. The master-mind controls the conscious mind, and brings refreshing and courageous thoughts to the mind. Listen to the still small voice, so gentle and kind, that fills the heart with gratifying, harmoni- ous love and peace that console each mortal who seeks daily a better knowledge and understanding of the other side of life, while in the mortal body. WHAT IS THE ETHEREAL? We ask, "What is the ethereal? Why the rul- ing planets and stars?" The Monarch tells us that the sun and moon are ruled and governed by the ethereal in the heavens. May the days of our youth in Spiritualism rap- idly unfold many marvelous things that will be most convincing to the public. Grive to the people the true doctrine of Spirit- ualism, with the knowledge of understanding it. Perfect peace and happiness be with you. BULLETIN. Joyous tidings to the nations! Peace abides! Hail to the kings, and to the President of the United States! Victory achieved! All hail, all hail! Divine Science 47 SPIRIT COMMUNION. Oh, how good we feel to know we can commune with our dearest ones who have departed from this life ! The sunshine illumines our soul within us. We rejoice to know the power given to us enables our spirit-friends to reach us, to tell of the heavenly home above in preparatory condi- tion for the pure in heart. Let us seek God's blessings from on high. Words cannot express our gratitude toward dear spirit-relatives who never tire of coming to comfort and cheer us in our daily struggles in life. We are receptive to their beautiful words of love. They are glad we are trying to live so as to meet them acceptably when we are called to answer in accordance with deeds done. Let mortals live a good, pure, spotless life with the help of the all-powerful and divine supremacy. While our spirit-friends' time is not limited by hours and days, they value time as it is, and they employ themselves with duties, which are both pleasant and profitable in a spiritual sense. They send their earnest prayers and earnest wishes for our advancement, which will crown our noble ef- forts. Our advancement will be safe and sure, and we will be gladly acclaimed by the multitude clothed in saving grace, and the goodness, which is so plainly in evidence in our daily life, will re- ward us for well-doing. Let us be attainable to all that is character- istic and Christ-like; I in the Father, and the Father in me! To live to dwell with him for- ever and ever ! Amen. 48 Divine Science SPIRITUALITY AND ITS QUALITIES. Spirituality is the true fundamental principle and doctrine of Spiritualism; to obtain spiritual success is to seek the highest and best advanced spirits to guide us into the avenues of truth, men- tally, aspirationally and inspirationally, and liv- ing in accordance therein, we will surely receive the very best intelligence from the noblest and highest advanced spirits, who are ever willing to advance us in our psychic gifts and power, ac- cording to the doctrine and teachings of our spir- itual friends. Reaping the harvest while it is ripe, scattering the seeds of kindness wherever we go, giving out to others, along the pathway, who are hungering and thirsting for truthful knowledge of the life beyond, let us mortals continue to give out to the best of our ability. Spiritual qualities pertain to the highest spir- itual phenomena, through the Infinite Intelligence, which is God. By keeping the minds free from all material and sensual conditions, mortals can master all earthly conditions, — gain self-control, confidence, and self-reliance, keeping our minds receptive. Mortals of the earth-plane mingle and remingle with worldly experiments; those of the astral plane seek above all enlightened conditions. Spiritualism, the true doctrine, leads to the pearly, white gates of heaven. A speedy advance- ment and knowledge of spirit-power are obtained in silence, by being passive and receptive, to re- Divine Science 49 ceive the mental impressions upon our brain. The inspirational and impressional messages given to us by our loved ones and friends are the true qualities of Spiritualism. AN OPEN DOORWAY. An open door is a pathway for the soul to enter into the kingdom of knowledge and wisdom, and truth of Spiritualism, which is the recipient of blessings from the heavenly kingdom, where are dear spirit friends and relatives, who have passed over to join the saints above; after meeting the departed ones, rejoice over the awakening of the soul in the celestial realm. The grave has been robbed of its victory ; and death of its sting ! The soul on entering the open door of the heavenly sphere, puts on immortality, in the home of pre- paredness beyond the sky, which has been made through good acts, deeds, and kindness. To make this preparatory state one of happi- ness, it is necessary for mortals to live good moral lives, — indulging only in good thoughts and deeds, love and friendship toward all who may come into your midst. We as Spiritualists can tell, while undeveloped, how the soul within was yearning for something intellectual and instructive, yet unconscious of its intelligence. Finally when the door of knowl- edge and wisdom was opened for our intuitions. 50 Divine Science spirit force directed us into the right course, to be pursued. Through concentration and mediations we come in touch with the spirits of superiority. At once a new spiritual condition is experienced. We go through one condition after another in this mortal life, passing through the most intangible influences. When we reach that soul aspiration to commune with the spirit v/orld, then there is a reality of a new spiritual birth within the soul. We are illumined with the radiance of glory and sanctification. SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE. The essence - of pure love is the sincerity of the heart, into which all influences flow, both in spir- itual and material conditions, that can be accepted or attained by the human being or mortal mind. The avenues of celestial joy are always open to the susceptible minds of high aspirations, reach- ing out into the depths of scientific philosophy and the great kingdom of ancient worlds, known only by those who dive into psychological research. Great will be their knowledge of the heavenly sphere. To gain true spiritual knowledge is to seek to obtain power and strength from the exalted spirits of modern ages. Their unlimited intuition will promulgate our occult powers and gifts of spir- itual phenomenal truth. Divine Science 51 WHAT IS POWER? Power of the inner soul of man is from the same source as that which comes from the un- known regions of the astral world. Power is God? The mighty wind, and the disastrous storms that ride the seas to float icebergs of mountain- ous heights, is the same power in Nature. Then again, dear hearers, power is force which is pre- dominant and intangible. This supernatural power and force causes the travel of mountainous icebergs to ride over the seas with unlimited des- tination. The power and sagacity of the oceanic currents of fathomless depth in w 7 hich no man has been known to navigate or exist— is the same power. The predominant power of the universe is in every vital object and living thing that ma- tures periodically. The inner soul receives its supernatural power from the Great I Am,- — the all-seeing, all- powerful, Infinite Intelligence, — God — the creator of all living and moving things under observation. The same creative power is given to mankind, both mentally and spiritually. Brain power has its exhibitary force for wonderful arts, inventions, thoughts and reasonings, operating through de- parted souls who do return to earth to instruct and use the mental vibrations actively, in im- pressional thoughts and ideas, through man's nor- mal brain. There can be no devastation of all spiritual phenomena of the spirit world. And, to relate 52 Divine Science the story of life after death, so-called dead spirit forces come to exhibit the given power, from the great Jehovah, the all-ruling Supreme Power of heaven and earth. NECESSITY OF PRAYER. Prayer, my dear readers, is most essential, and — with faith, believing, — revives the mind, soul, and body. Spiritualism is founded on prayer and faith, believing in God, the Father, our daily comforter. The true principles of Spiritualism are the de- velopment of manhood and womanhood through concentration and earnest prayer to God. Spiritualism is characteristic; the stronger the character of man, the more will-power and nerve- force he possesses; brain-force and mind-power develop the occult powers and scientific research into the astral world. THOUGHT WAVES. The ideals of thought are beautifying to the soul. The brilliancy of vibrating atoms of spir- itual intelligence thrills the being with delight and joy, makes the pathway an illimitable success, and fills mortals with vigor and soul-force to press onward. As the lily, so pure and white, so beautifully shaped and formed, so should mortals ' lives reach that standard of loyalty and purity, in order that Divine Science 53 their lives may be looked upon as spotless as the lily, and as beautiful, by receiving the love, peace, and harmonious greetings of spiritual truth. By having faith and confidence in God, the In- finite, and our spirit-band, mortals mount and surpass all obstacles and material conditions of degrading influence that tend to defile good morals and pure minds. SILENT CONCENTRATION AND PRAYER. Concentration is a self-reliance that brings the inner man in communion with the great — I am the all-powerful Omnipotence. Good seed sown in daily life will reap its re- ward in a substantial, helpful, and lasting spir- itual growth. The communion with celestial hosts of heaven gives to one that unspeakable joy within. The gentle voice of the spirit whispers to us those words of consolation that we will be blessed in our well-doing. Silent concentration and prayer lead to the pathway of success in spiritual intelligence. Much is gained through prayer to God the Father. The spirit power fills the soul with overwhelming joy. Pray for light, truth and strength. Amen. THOUGHT, Advanced thoughts of spiritual phenomena re- veal to the psychic mind (now among the fragrant pines), God's thoughts toward humanity. The 54 Divine Science fragrance is God's breath which he breathes upon the children of men. Power of thought is given to mankind to reveal to mortals the true doctrine of the world beyond. MOTHEB NATURE. We inhale the breeze of fragrance from Mother Nature, in the flowers and shrubbery of God's creative power. We will give as an illustration, trees in their natural beauty, each bearing a flower of different color (with their spiritual significance)* A tree bearing a blossom that is white-pink-and-red de- notes love, kindness, thoughtfulness and friend- ship. A tree of deep pink color beaming in the sun- light, brings to the mind thought waves of gen- erosity. The red-leafed tree, in the evening shades to a color of silver-gray or moss-color, which signi- fies firmness, strength, power and contentment. My dear hearers, we welcome you to our school of Mother Nature of high thoughts, and to dwell among the higher forces of the seventh sphere. We come to enlighten and to drive out all con- taminating influences, which tend to destroy good, mature, intellectual force. Reflection of golden sunset upon the green vel- vet cover of Mother Earth brings a soothing, har- monious condition to the soul, and reveals God's love and his tender mercy. Divine Science 55 God smiles upon those who serve him faith- fully. We speak of the laws of attraction. What does it mean? To the psychic, all that is grand and beautiful, both of Mother Nature and of spiritual phenomena; all that is attainable from the astral plane to unfold the power within, so as to enable us to consider the subjects that have been chosen for our instructors and advanced progress. THE SPIRITUAL ATTITUDE. The spiritual attitude reveals to mankind the loftiest astral knowledge attainable from the ex- alted spirits from the other side of life — receiving the love, wisdom and truth, given through inspira- tion from the spirit-entities, who receive their power from Supreme Intelligence — God. Mortals, having the baptism of faith in them- selves, and knowing positively that there is sun- shine in their soul, their pathway is one which will lead the soul into the avenues of supernatural stages of astral planes. The master-mind and soul-power are the two principal conditions of mediumship to dwell upon, so as to reach the inspirational and planetary regions of the celestial world. INTEGRITY. Integrity (in its energetic resources of involu- tion and evolution) is a restorative condition of one's higher self. Personal integrity is that soul- 56 Divine Science power which is a desirous state of planetary and symbolical involution. To reach this symbolical state of existence, one must make preparatory plans to live in accordance with the divine laws and doctrine of philosophical views. Unto you whom God has chosen for his god-of- godliness, let the majesty of his supreme power flow in thy midst. His works of mighty power are handed down from on high — to annoint the soul and body, to sanctify and bless his faithful observers. . . . We ask Thee, God, to give us Thy manifesting power, and the soul inspiring thoughts that will fill our brain cells ; quicken our solar plexus, so as to enable us to go forth to teach this great truth. We ask this in Thy name. Amen and Amen. INTO THE HARVEST. Reaping the harvest supply of seed sown in Mother Earth, the soil having been carefully tilled, we find the laborers have diligently worked for a successful supply in reaping of the season's harvest. Now, my spiritual hearers, let mortals sow the seed of spiritual truth, and for harvest industry turn thine eye within to cleanse and purify the temple— the house within the mortal body. Let the mind be so beautifully illumined and magni- fied with beauty and splendor, so that mankind can research into the universe and there gather Divine Science 57 in the good seed that has been sown through thought transference on the atmospheric plane. Through the divine laws and doctrine, the good seed sown in mortals ' life, will ripen into wisdom, love, and true knowledge of soul, inspiring and invigorating soul-power. When mortals become emphatically inclined to Spiritualism and its spiritual doctrine, then the soul can reach out to be received by those an- nointed saints. Words cannot express the joy through the sweet communion, received from those who are our con- trolling powers. OUR SPIRITUAL NATURE. The bright sunshine — how it shines in our soul ! It illuminates our being; it invigorates us spir- itually; it reminds the minds of human beings of spirituality. When we arise on a bright, sunshiny morning, and hear the songs of the birds, how happy it makes us feel — like singing and doing some kind act for our friends and neighbors. It is our spiritual nature that causes us to feel so refreshed after our spirit friends have visited us during our slumber, and have left their bless- ing with us. We rejoice over their spiritual bless- ing, and their watchfulness during our sleep. Day-by-day we do earnestly seek to know more of the other side of life. We most humbly beseech thee, our Heavenly 58 Divine Science Father, for this precious gift* Ever keep us in thy sight. May we be more sincere, and seek deeper and deeper into knowledge and wisdom, to enable us to go forward, telling of the great work there is to be done among the people of earth. We rejoiced at thy coming. Spiritualism (the refounder of the earth), may it be as broadcast as the ocean is wide and long! May our lives be as bright and happy as the bright sunshine of day! SPIRIT LECTURE. By Aunt Laura Johnson. (One of my dear spirit guides.) " Arise to the glory and beauty of love, and grace-of-God that awaits thee; to the enlighten- ment of mortals' mind of wisdom and knowledge of progressiveness ; to what real life and the di- vine laws teach the human family of their welfare here and the life hereafter. Be ye humble and obedient to the cause. With diligence, put forth every effort with mighty power and force to reach that which maintains energetical upliftment of spiritual unf oldment, of the phenomena of Spiritualism, and the accept- ance of its philosophy, so that mortals may ex- hibit the wonderful knowledge and wisdom of the kingdom and worlds above. Divine Science 59 And also, give accurate proof that the soul of mortals does live after man's career in the flesh of the body is ended. Let the mind and soul-being be so illumined with this wonderful truth and doctrine of divine truth and brotherly love, that the magnetic forces of spirit-power will be as restorative and refresh- ing to the soul as the soft, cool breeze in summer on a warm sultry day. To the wearied undeveloped mind that may seek to know and to obtain joy and comfort of mind when in great distress, a few words from one who is acquainted with this knowledge, while in their atmosphere, will make them feel somewhat re- lieved. The time is quickly approaching when frivolity and excitement will become baptized by Spiritual- ism and its teachings." — Discourse by (Spirit) Aunt Laura Johnson. PATIENCE AND ENDURANCE. Patience gives us that assurance, hope, and sat- isfaction of knowing that, through our reasoning powers and thought transference, we can (through faith) master and overcome all earthly conditions that come into our daily life to hinder one's pro- gression. It matters not what our occupation in life may be, man has that energy, will-power and that soul- reasoning power which restores and replenishes. Man, the spiritual being, rises above the untu- 60 Divine Science tored and non-inspired mind; he dwells upon pa- tience and endurance, and listens to the still small voice within, which brings to the reasoning, ideas that are instructive thoughts of loyal and grand inspirational wisdom and knowledge, — which bring man into close communion with God, the infinite intelligence, and all-seeing, all-powerful, controlling power. I know that, with unfathomable faith, all things desirable will come my way, through comprehen- sion of patience and endurance. THE HUMAN AURA. The human aura generated to protect us, gives us clear instinct, clairvoyantly, to sense, to hear, to see, and to prognosticate the human being with- out any effort upon the mental or psychic intelli- gence. Creating an atmosphere about the mortal being, the personal magnetism is surrounded by an auric- belt. This auric atmosphere is so keenly felt by the psychic who has developed this emanated aura and becomes as solid and as firm as a mountain in height and in circumference, therewith resem- bling the condition of a planetary atmosphere. The human aura has the distinct character of the aurical emanation condensed into understand- ing of the supreme phenomena of the spiritual being. Individuals may possess this aura by being sus- Divine Science 61 ceptible to wisdom, knowledge, and principles of divine law. First, create within thyself a clean heart and an upright spirit. Second, have brotherly love for all mankind, then serene happiness will bring to you all, re- quired wisdom and grace, with faith — the key to all Infinite Intelligence. WHAT IS LIFE? Life (both material and spiritual life), while in the mortal body, has its many changes; mind- power, thought-energy and reasoning faculties guide mankind, and instruct the human family all through the time of existence. From infancy to childhood days, life is as the budding of trees and shrubbery in springtime, and like the budding of the rose as time goes on to maturity. The life of man is like a tree when grown to its full height, with the limbs and branches grown to their limitation. So, in life, as time passes on, man's ingenuity invents, with his brain power, wonderful inven- tions, such as the numerous apparatus of today: the flying machines, underground traffic; enor- mous mechanical powers can be mentioned, in- vented by man's brain and thought-reasoning. Man, as he advances in life on the material plane of industry, seeks beyond the knowledge and science of invention. Being advantageous, man's courageous ideas of 62 Divine Science higher self predicates wisdom of spiritual phil- osophy, the nature of a true Being, and a living soul within the human aura. By the brain penetrating the mind and acting upon the reasoning qualities, man's life is made lofty and is qualified to know that there is a soul that lives on and on in a spiritual world. Man realizes that there is an interaction of the soul, mind, thought, and reasoning faculties. Having absolute proof and knowledge of spirit- life, that the soul does live after death (so-called dead), mortals, while in the body, through spirit- power, are prepared for their abiding place of bliss, joy, happiness and peace, — there to dwell in the heavenly spheres with annointed saints, relatives, and friends. Wisdom, therefore, is the real true principle for serene upliftment and to manifold the mani- festations of the great god-given powers of the universe. Knowledge is the retailing recipiency of enter- ing into the doctrine and amity of the laws of the divine teachings of true goodness and love. NATURAL AND SPIRITUAL BEING. The power of the Word is manifested within me — I Am understanding. Soul-power is that state of consciousness which the subconsciousness of mind manifests in activity with brain, mind and reasoning senses, or thought, enabling one to travel out and into the astral Divine Science 63 plane, and to exhibit mental aspiration, so as to be receptive, — thus receiving the mental views that are pictured on the brain. By so doing, psychic abilities receive force, strength, and power to attract, obtain, and sus- tain its newness, with power of a spiritual being ■ — which has left the natural being — to a spiritual awakening. This shows you how to use your spiritual heal- ing power to control your own vibratory forces, and to direct your mental life, so that there will be harmony of body, mind, and soul. There needs to be an understanding how to har- monize the physical, mental and spiritual fac- ulties, so that there may be established unison with the Great Mind and principles of nature. By building a firm foundation, the universal laws live in every organism. One ? s perception of the laws and forces helps one to build, by Truth, and the conscious prin- ciples of spirit-life. Spirit is the life of all or the cause of all un- foldment. It expresses itself in matter, through motion. Thus we have the Force (with positive and negative actions), that combines and re- combines all elements. Vibrations of soul are from vibratory forces of spirit within, that is filled with all the spiritual principles and the higher constructive elements of life ; and the soul is ever giving forth these del- icate and beautiful vibrations that are filled with every love element of our life. 64 Divine Science These sensations and emotions (which are the finer faculties, and the more refined constructive processes) are ever radiated upon the mind from higher spirits and who have more perfect condi- tions within themselves, because they are untiring in their efforts to strengthen, sustain, upbuild, reconstruct, and inspire us through the mind to the physical organism. When we are in a healthy condition, more re- fined, and more progressed, we are more con- sciously responsive to the vibrations which are so filled with principles of Spirit Divine. The more refined vibrations are stronger and more powerful than the heavier vibrations — which seem to be denser and more material. Refined vi- bration is divine energy, itself. These vibrations change the very color of physical emanation, as they show themselves in one's aura or magnetic atmosphere. The result in every way (every form, every ex- pression) is proportionate to the changes of vi- bration; so that the condition desired is to ob- tain a complete balance of vibratory systems. We seek harmonious relation of all vibration to every part of the body, and interblending of powers with life principles of the physical and spiritual being. The highest expression of wisdom is that which expresses the beauty, strength and love elements, of Deity. By attaining to this Intelligence, unfoldment, Divine Science 65 and power, you become more and more conscious of the quality of vibratory forces. The spiritual insight is far superior to the ma- terial. So quick and so complete, it is of itself, like a photographic process. The spiritual fac- ulties become unfolded in wisdom. They exhibit their God-like principles. There is nothing higher, nothing greater. There is nothing larger, nor more powerful. There is nothing beyond more beautiful, kind, more luminous, brilliant, softer, or more peaceful to the consciousness of life. This is the highest knowledge, and the greatest power in the universe. It is love — unselfish love — per- meating the atmosphere and operating with the Soul Principle of life. By your spiritual consciousness recognizing this, you become brave — you are awakened to the highest powers. You are limitless, because you are dealing with the Highest Power. All things are possible for you — your success and achievement. It is impossible for anything to retard your progress, because you have these beautiful powers of psychic ability transmitted through your spiritual being, from God and the angels. You must keep the channels of your own life clear, so as to receive and then radiate these life forces. Your message to soul, therefore, will be received, and your own consciousness will be re- freshed. The different avenues to the soul must be found, 66 Divine Science according to your development and condition, each, day as psychic strength is given to you. Thankfulness should be given to the higher sources, that they may draw nearer to co-operate with you, through God and the angel world. The Spirit of wisdom is within you, and is the source of all knowledge. Through the acceptance of Spirit, is your wis- dom found. You are then made to understand that wisdom teaches you how to live the Christ-life. TREE OF LIFE. The tree-of-life is an emblem, and has symbolical meaning of God-like principles: The earth, is the body from which the roots of the trees thrive and send forth sap into the branches, which grow and form into high and statuesque clusters of leaves. The trunk of the tree is the temple which is nourished and fed from Mother Earth. We, as mortals, represent the tree in which the soul lives. The soul is nourished and fed from the teachings of the Christ-principle, as found in the divine laws and truth which spring up into our souls just as mortals sow seeds of truth and nourish the seed planted in the soul of righteous living. The warmth of the sun-rays in springtime gives life to the tree-of-life, and Mother Earth sends forth the budding and leaves, which shape them- Divine Science 67 selves as a protection for us in the heat of the sun. The roots and trunk of trees have a covering of bark as a useful covering or shelter of the inner soul or life of the tree. In the branches is strength and vigor, and the leaves are thought vibrations. Why? Because the angel friends and relatives dwell among the trees ; they are as visible to us now as when they were in the mortal body. We mortals are a living Tree-of-Life encased in a body ; our body is the Mother Earth, our soul is the trunk of the tree encased in a flesh-body; our thoughts, reason and brain-cells are as the limbs and leaves of trees, swaying to-and-fro, sending out emanations of vibratory force to all mankind — love, peace, joy and happiness. As the odor of foliage is breathed into our nos- trils, just so are sweet vibrations felt in the vi- brative atmosphere from the towering branches of aspiration — receiving light, truth and wisdom from the azure. We are the Tree-of-Life planted in the body as a spiritual body. Faith, wisdom and truth stand out (as a man- tle placed upon Mount Zion), giving out such knowledge as is given to us from the angelic hosts of heaven. We are the pillars of Christ Jesus, who has endowed us with the gift of spiritual knowledge, spirit-power, and inspired teachings of spirit-life 68 Divine Science and spirit-return, with a gift of healing, through spirit-power, from Divine Supremacy. When healing by magnetic power and force, our soul-consciousness receives the current from the emanating vibration, through which many "incurable" diseases are cured, and cripples are made happy by God's great and marvelous rem- edies — made curable by the touch of the unseen hands of spirit-power. Faith is the keynote of all success, so mortals put on the whole armor of faith looking to loftier ideals. We are the living Tree-of-Lif e — our faces beam- ing in the sun-light, looking up, beckoning to the angel world to give us more and more light, and truth, as we journey on our pathway. Mother Nature gives us the budding tree, and the leaves shoot forth their green mantle or cover as a protection and shade from the rays of sun. We, as mortals, go through life as a motto — are guided and protected by our angel-band from birth to manhood and to womanhood. Mortal life is an emblem of the Tree-of-Life. TEUTH IS THE LIGHT. ^ Truthfulness, to be one's staff in this mortal life, should be united with love and wisdom. So press onward, ye faithful ones, so as to gain the truth, the light, and the success of achievement. Truthfulness is our motto, because it is the Divine Science 69 fundamental principle of the divine law of the universal realms. We are the living Tree-of-Life, receiving through the open door of the solar-plexus, in- spired thoughts from our controlling powers and teachers, that awaken one's inner soul conscious- ness to a greater and clearer understanding of the soul body — life after death and immortality, which is characteristic of the soul-being. The soul being thus becomes awakened to a comprehension of God's intelligence and wonder- ful working powers, which is the truth and light of the world. The spirit of immortality (sonl consciousness) emanates the universal kingdom, receiving the electric magnetic current of emanating velocity and power to traverse from sphere to sphere, whereby mortals leave their earth-body with their intelligence of life immortal. We find that the soul and spirit of mortals who have kept in the path of Christ-like principle and righteous living, do come to us and fill our minds with celestial joy, the essence of love, and the sincerity of high aspirations. So the inner man, with sub-consciousness aroused, becomes active and idealized! Spiritualistic doctrine and the phenomena of Spiritualism (spirit-life and spirit-return) are based upon truth of eternal life beyond the grave. Inspired hope is given by and through the psycho- logical research. Therefore, the scientific study of man's expressive brain mind and reasoning 70 Divine Science over the knowledge and study of the astral world, will never cease in the intellectual mind of man. Great and marvelous will be the teachers and teachings from ancient kings and prophets, through ruling powers of the Most High. Won- derful will be the translations handed down to mankind, when the soul-standard of mortals is inspired with a spirit to raise aloft the inner self, to a realization that Christ is in me and I in Christ. When the upright in heart receive the divine intelligence in their daily lives, the soul will be filled with divine powder radiating joy, happiness, light and sunshine, to light their pathway to peace, prosperity and progression. When healing the lame and the sick, and giving words of encouragement and cheer, illumination comes to the psychic or other person in the form of that love and merciful goodness which others notice and feel, because it is a radiation of God's power and infinite goodness. Dear hearers of spiritual truth, let the spirit- power manifest itself through you! An open door is a pathway for the soul to enter into the kingdom of knowledge and wisdom, and truth of Spiritualism, which is the recipient of blessings from the heavenly kingdom, where are dear spirit friends and relatives, who have passed over to join the saints above ; after meeting the departed ones, all rejoice over the awakening of the soul in the celestial realm. The grave has been robbed of its victory; and " death' ' of its sting. The soul on entering the open door of the heavenly sphere, puts on immortality, in the home of preparedness beyond the sky, which has been made through good acts, deeds, and kindness. Finally when the door of knowiedge and wisdom was opened for our intuitions, spirit force directed us into the right course, to be pur- sued. Through concentration and meditations we come in touch with the spirits of superiority. At once a new spiritual condition is experienced. We go through one condition after another in this mortal life, passing through the most intangible influ- ences. When we reach that soul aspiration to Divine Science 73 commune with the spirit world, then there is a reality of a new spiritual birth within the soul. We are illumined with the radiance of glory and sanctification. Eiessed be the word that triumph over the land, and brings forth victorious victory, which will tri- umphantly bring forth the truth and knowledge of Spiritualism and spirit-return, to be welcomed by the multitude of unbelievers. Then mortals will realize what has been gained by prayerful thoughts and right-living, by good seeds sown and deeds done unto others by the upright and pure in heart; their good, pure thoughts having vi- brated through the atmosphere with velocity, pen- etrating the good mind, and received by the re- ceptive mind, consciously and unconsciously. So it is with delight God's instruments earnestly seek to fulfill the laws and doctrine of Spiritual- ism. On earth, as it is in heaven, we wish to be led by his dear hand, to go on and upward, to proclaim the beautiful truth and doctrine that is put before us. We gain daily the power upon us ; we magnify the symbolical views of the astral world. On our brain is mapped the views of the celestial heaven. It is soul-food for the advance- ment of the progressive work. The beauties and wonders of the celestial city will be manifested to be monopolized for the unfoldment and uplift- ment of humanity. In your daily life be truthful and just, harmon- izing with the inner self; the subconscious mind unfolding the ethics to the conscious mind. Ee- 74 Divine Science joice, and be glad of being developed to that standard to catch the glimpse of the spirit-hosts, and high aspiration view the astral world, where spirit forces do hover around and about lis; ex- ceedingly glad are we to know that we can com- municate with our dearly loved ones and friends. How happy are they who can impress our brain with aspirational thoughts and ideas of lofty and inspirational knowledge of occultism. Let mortals seek all that is good and pure to be acceptable and perceivable for spiritual identifica- tion. When founded on spiritual truths, readily do mortals attract the highest and noblest of the spirit world. Praises be to the heavenly hosts for their su- premacy — who dwell in the land of holiness, the highest sphere of aspiration. The right revolt of materiality should super- vise all limitations which uplift or defile human nature and character, which intermingle and beset the reality of just and true ideas and thoughts. Dear hearers of spiritual truth, let the spirit power of the Divine Intelligence ever guide you and keep you in the path of light and truth. The knowledge of astral worlds will never be removed from the minds of those engaged in sci- entific research. Divine Science 75 PROSE POEM. By (Spirit) Ella Wheeler Wilcox through the mediumship of Miss A. M. Robinson. Lo, when we mourn our loss as dead, yet the soul is awakened to immortality — and when in despair, with thought of our dear ones who have passed the portal of transition, we turn our eyes within, all grows bright and fair. In the twilight, and in the shadow of the eve, when all is still and insects have found their nest, when out in the soft breeze we hear the murmur of the brook and the sound of creeping insect, when dew is falling and the stars above begin to shine, we in silent moments retire to our quiet chamber, where we sit, wait and listen, to grasp the thought and impressions the sounds which vi- brate in the atmosphere — the sweet sounds that rhyme in the lines — then we gather them to- gether and we visualize in the yonder skies, the beauties of the glories of God's love that vi- brates and thrills every nerve of our being. And we visualize in yonder skies our dear ones beckoning. We see the beckoning hand ! We hear their soft words ! Oh, how we long to come in touch with those great and noble spirits ! We sit in the silence in our quiet little cham- 76 DivineScience ber, and we take up pencil and paper, and we wait with patience for the answer. And we know that they come to bring us the highest knowledge of the spheres. Be ye receptive. Be ye faithful. Be ye righteous and faithful in doing all things. Stand firm ! ! Wave the banner high — dauntless, over the rag- ing winds and high seas! Place thy feet upon the rock, stand firm and say, "I shall, I will do my Master's will. — I will abide in thee." Robinson. i What Is Materialization ?— It is the man- ifestation of forms that materialize through Z ethereal matter. Etherealization is formed through a combined force of magnetism. What Is Clairvoyance? — It is a phase of mediumship termed psychical ability, seer- ship, and visualization of visions and objects seen mentally — clairvoyantly. jWJfflTfflffWWWffl^^ 80 Divine Science WISDOM. Wisdom, — the words of the rarest fruit, comes from the Supreme or Infinite Intelligence— God — the emanating source, through which flows (in its channels) all spiritual phenomena. The spirit of the living God, the divine power, is handed down to us by the spirit hosts, who when in mortal body, in their daily lives — through character, deeds, and actions (by the aid of their auric atmosphere through their emanated force and power), prepared for their abiding place-of- places, and happiness, to live forever with the saints, in heaven. Wisdom, then, is the true principle for serene upliftment, to manifold and to manifest the great god-given power of the universe. Knowledge is the retaining recipiency entering into the doctrine of amity, through the laws of divine teachings of truth, goodness, and love — the path that leads to the realms of glory. See I Cor., Chapter 12, Verse 8, as follows : "For to one is given the spirit the word of wisdom; to another, the word of knowl- edge by the same spirit." MATERIALIZATION AND CLAIRVOYANCE. Genesis, Chapter 10. An angel appeared to Hagar. The angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, on the way to Shur. The angel asked Hagar where she would go. She wanted to flee Divine Science 81 from her mistress, being embarrassed of her con- dition. The angel told Hagar to return and sub- mit herself to her mistress. The angel said unto her: "Thy seed should be exceedingly multiplied — the number should be unlimited. ' ' The angel of the Lord told Hagar a son should be born to her, and his name should be called Ishmael. Hagar prayed to God in faith, believing the Lord heard her cry and knew of her suffering. Hagar called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her, "Thou God seeth me; I also look after him that seeth me." The angel of the Lord said to Hagar that her unborn son would be a wild man; that he would be against every man, and every man's hand would be against him; but the God-power would sustain him, and he should dwell in the presence of all mankind. Hagar called the angel of the Lord that spoke unto her, "Thou God seeth me." She looked upon the Infinite Intelligence — God — as a father of protection and guidance. Genesis, Chapter 18. Abraham saw that three angels in materialized form stood by him ; he ran to meet them from his tent in honor of the Lord. Abraham bowed him- self to the ground; he needed strength from the Lord. He asked that water should be brought to wash 82 Divine Science the Lord's feet — to wash the material conditions of earth from the Lord's feet for purification. And a morsel of food was prepared by Sarah, Abraham's wife, to comfort the Lord, as Abra- ham thought the Lord was weary from his jour- ney. Genesis; Chapter 19. Two angels materialized again to Lot. He bowed his face to the ground, and asked the lords (angels) to enter his house to tarry all night, and to wash their feet. The angels were to abide in the street all night. Lot urged the two angels to tarry and they accepted Lot's invitation. He made a feast for them of unleavened bread and they did eat. But before retiring, men of the pity, even the men of Sodom, encompassed around his house, both young and old, from every quarter. They came to see the two male angels that had materialized to Lot, to know them. Lot said to the two men: "I have two daughters. ' ' There came a dispute between the men, which they pressed sorely upon one man, even Lot. The angels of the Lord put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them for safety, and shut the door. And the power of the angels smote the men that were at the door with blindness, both great and small, so that they had great difficulty in finding means to get away. The angels asked Lot if he had any one else Divine Science 83 besides his sons, sons-in-law and daughters ; if so, to bring them out of the city. The Lord had sent the angels to destroy the city. In the morning the angels hastened to Lot, say- ing; " Arise; take thy wife and two daughters, lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. ' ' While Lot lingered, the men laid hands upon him and his wife and two daughters, and sent them out of the city. The angels told them to escape for their lives, and not to stay on the plain, but to escape to the mountain, lest they be consumed. Lot did not believe the message from the Lord. Lot had found grace in the Lord who had mag- nified his mercy upon him, saving his life. He could not believe that the Lord would suffer any harm to come to him. He was afraid to escape to the mountains, lest some evil would befall him and he would die. The angel told Lot that the city was near him and was a small one. Then Lot was willing to escape for safety; being a small city, he knew his soul would live on. The angel promised Lot not to overthrow the small city. The angel asked him to hasten, for they could not destroy the city of Sodom until he had gone thither; therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar. The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. When Lot escaped, then there rained upon 84 Divine Science Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven. The Lord destroyed those cities, and all the plains, and all the inhabitants of the cities thai grew upon the ground. Lot's wife tarried, and she became a pillar of salt, for disobeying the spirit voice. Abraham got up early in the morning and went to the place where he stood before the iLord ; he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. When God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the 'Overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt. Lot went out of Zoar, and dwelt in the moun- tains with his two daughters. He feared to dwell in Zoar, and dwelt in a cave. Lot's two daugh- ters planned to give their father wine for im- moral purposes. Genesis, Chaptee 32. While Jacob was alone, a man came and wrestled with him till daybreak. The angel asked to be released. Jacob was persistent. The angel touched his thigh and put it out of joint. Jacob asked the angel to heal him of his lameness. Jacob having power over the angel, he was asked his name and was told his name was no longer Jacob but Israel. The angel was an obsession. Jacob had great controlling power from God. The Divine Science 85 angel healed Jacob's thigh. Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, for he had seen God face to face, saying: "My life is preserved/ ' and he passed over Peniel — the name he gave to the place. The sun shone upon him and halted upon his thigh. Therefore, the Jews do not eat certain parts of animals. Judges, Chapter 13. An angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim and sent the people out of Egypt, for the angel said the covenant would not be broken with them. Jud., Chapter 13. An angel spoke to Manoah all that had been said unto the woman for her to beware. She should not eat anything that came from wine, nor strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. The angel met Manoah 's wife in the field and said: "Thou art barren, but thou shalt conceive and bear a son." No sword should come near the son's head, as he was to be a Nazarite, unto God from birth, and he would deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. The woman ran and told her husband that she had seen a man of God, and that his countenance was like the counte- nance of an angel. She did ask whence he came; the angel did not tell the woman his name. Manoah told his wife they would surely die, for they had seen God. 86 Divine Science The angel did not appear again to Manoah or his wife; then Manoah knew it was an angel of the Lord. Vebse 8. Manoah entreated the Lord, and asked that the Lord would send the man of God again to teach them what to do unto the child that was to be born. God hearkened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel came again unto the woman as she sat in the field. Manoah was not with her. The woman made haste, showed her husband, and said that the angel appeared again to her. Manoah went after his wife, and said to the angel: "Art thou the man that spaketh unto the woman?" He said: "I am." Manoah asked his word to come to pass and said: "How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?" The angel said to Manoah: "Let the woman beware. The woman should not eat or drink anything that is unclean." Manoah asked the angel of the Lord his name. The answer was: "Why ask my name? It is a secret." The angel appeared no more to Manoah and his wife ; then Manoah knew it was an angel of the Lord. Manoah said they would surely die, because they had seen God. The woman knew that God was pleased with them, as his instrument, or he would have killed them, and would not have re- ceived the burnt offering and a meat offering from Divine Science 87 their hands. Nor would God have shown them marvelous things or told them of their future hap- piness — of having a son born unto them. They named the son Samson, # and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. The spirit of the Lord moved Samson at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol. I Samuel, Chapter 28. Saul disguised himself and put on other rai- ment; and he went with two men, for he (Saul) sought a woman with a familiar spirit at Endor. He went by night. He said: "I pray thee, di- vine unto me by the familiar spirit — bring him up, whom I shall name unto thee." The medium of Endor said to Saul, she knew what he had done by persecution to others who had spirit-power and mediumship — so why did he lay a snare for her life, to cause her to die? Saul promised the woman that no punishment would come to her, if she would have Samuel ma- terialize to him. Samuel materialized to the medium and told her that Saul had deceived her. The medium described Samuel as an old man covered with a mantle. Saul recognized the spirit as Samuel, and he bowed his face to the ground. The woman cried aloud when Samuel impressed her with fear concerning what Saul had done. Saul told the woman not to be afraid. He asked her what she saw. She answered: "I saw gods ascending out of the earth." 88 Divine Science Saul wanted to know what form the material- ized spirit was. She then described as before- stated. Saul was in distress. He disquieted Samuel. The Philistines made war against him. God had departed from him, and answered him not; no more by prophets nor dreams. Therefore, Saul called Samuel that it might be made known to him what to do. Samuel wanted to know why Saul should ask him, knowing the Lord had departed from him, and had become his enemy. Saul disobeyed the voice of the Lord. Saul lost his kingdom. Saul was so afraid, because of the words of Samuel, he fell straightway all along the earth ; he had no strength, for he had not eaten bread all that day, nor all that night. The woman came to Saul in his distress. He had promised her no trouble would befall her. She sat a morsel of bread before him, which he refused to eat, but his servants together with the woman, compelled him to eat. He hearkened to them and arose from the earth and sat upon the bed. The woman had a calf in the house, which she killed and hastened to bake unleavened bread. She brought it before Saul and his servants : they ate and went away that night, I Kings 19 : 5-8. God appeared to Elijah. As he lay asleep un- der a juniper tree, an angel touched him and said : ' ' Arise and eat. ' ' Divine Science 89 He arose and did eat, and had strength from that meal to sustain him for forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. The voice of the Lord came again to Elijah, asking him: "What doeth thou here, Elijah?' ' He answered and said that he had been very jealous of the Lord God of hosts. He added: "The children of Israel have forsaken Thy cove- nant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword.' ' Only he, Elijah, was left. They sought him to take his life. Dakiel, Chapter 3. The angel protected the three Hebrew children from the fiery furnace. Nebuchadnezzar, the king, made an image of gold. Its height was three-score cubits, and the breadth six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, the province of Babylon. Then he gathered the princes, governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which had been set up by him. Then the princes and governors, captains, judges, treasurers, counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers, were gathered together unto the dedication of the golden image which the king had set up. A herald cried aloud : " To you it is commanded, people, nations, and languages, that at sound of all the instruments, all shall fall down and 90 Divine Science worship the golden image. Those who f alleth not down and worshipeth not the golden image shall at the same hour be cast into a fiery furnace. " At the sound of the music all the people and nations, and languages, fell down and worshiped the golden image which the king had set up. At that time, certain people, Chaldeans, came near, and accused the Jews. They said' to the king: "0, king, live forever," — for the king had made a rule that every man shall heed the sound of the music, fall down and worship the golden image, that those who falleth not down, shall be cast into the midst of a burn- ing, fiery furnace. Certain ones were set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, — Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. These men were brought before the king. The king spoke and said unto the men: "Is it true, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image, which I have set up?" The king told them to be ready when the sound of the musical instruments were heard again; if not, at the same hour the men were to be thrown into a burning, fiery furnace. The king asked what God, and who was He that could deliver them from his hands. The men were careful not to answer the king's question, for they knew the God that they served was all-seeing and all-powerful. "With implicit faith in God — the Supreme In- telligence — there was no fear in them. Divine Science 91 The men told the king their god was able to deliver them from the burning, fiery furnace, and they positively would not serve his gods, nor wor- ship his golden image. Then, Nebuchadnezzar, full of fury against the three men, had the furnace heated seven times more than it was to be heated at first. He commanded the strongest men to bind the men and throw them into the furnace. These men were bound in their hats, coats, shoes and other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning, fiery furnace. The flames of the fire slew the men the king had commanded to take up Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. The king was astonished, rose up in haste, and said: "Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire ? ' 9 The answer was : ' ' King, true, 0, King." "But, lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt ; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God." Nebuchadnezzar came near, to the mouth of the fiery furnace, and called the men to come forth and hither; that they were servants of the most high God. They came forth from the midst of the fire. The princes and governors saw these men, over whose bodies the fire had no power ; neither their hair was singed, nor their clothes changed, nor was any smell of the fire on them. The king then knew that God had sent his angel to protect the men. 92 Divine Science He blessed God, and told the men not to serve, nor worship, any god, except their own God. The king made a decree that every people, nation, or language, that spoke anything amiss of the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, would have their houses changed into a dung-hill. There was not any other God that could deliver after this sort. The king promoted the men in the province of Babylon. St. Matthew, Chapter I. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, say- ing: " Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary, thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the holy ghost." Then, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife ; and he knew her not till she had brought forth her first-born son, and he called his name Jesus. Luke, 9th Chapter, 28th to 34th Verse. Moses and Elias appeared on the mount. And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, he took Peter, James, and John, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, his countenance altered, and his raiment was white and glittering. And, behold, there talked with him two men; these were Moses and Elias, who appeared in glory, and spoke of what he should accomplish at Jerusalem. Divine Science 93 Peter and those that were with him were heavy with sleep. When they awoke, they saw glory; and the two men that stood by him, as they de- parted from him. Peter said unto Jesus: "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias." Not knowing what he said while he spoke, there came a cloud and overshadowed them. They feared as they entered the cloud. There came a voice out of the cloud, saying: "This is my be- loved son: hear him." When the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. They kept everything secret. They told no man in those days any of these things they had seen. Luke, 1st ajstd 2nd Chapters. An angel appeared to the two Marys at the grave, to Zacharias, to Mary, Luke I Chapter, to Shepherd — Luke II. In the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a cer- tain priest named Zacharias, of Abia, lived with his wife, who was the daughter of Aaron. Her name was Elisabeth. Both were righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. They had no child, because Elisabeth was bar- ren, and both were now well advanced in years. It was the custom to burn incense when going into the temple of the Lord. The whole multitude of the people were pray- ing without at the time of incense. 94 Divine Science When Zacharias saw the angel, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him: '"Fear not, Zach- arias, for thy prayers are heard ; thy wife Elisa- beth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John." "Thou shalt have joy and gladness; many shall rejoice at his birth. He shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother ? s womb. "He shall turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for - the Lord." Zacharias said to the angel: "How shall I know this? I am old and my wife is well advanced in years." The angel said: "I am Gabriel. I am sent from God to show thee glad tidings. Thou shall be dumb, and shall not be able to speak until the day when these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season." The people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he tarried so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they believed that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless. And the angel came unto Mary, and said: "Hail, Divine Science 95 thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women." When Mary saw him, she was troubled, and marveled at the angel's message. The angel told her not to fear, for she had found favor with God, and said: "Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the son of the High- est. The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever. And to his kingdom there shall be no end." Then Mary said unto the angel: "How shall this be, seeing that I know not a man." The angel answered and said unto her: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. Therefore, also, that holy being that shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." Luke 2nd, 8th Verse. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And the angel of the Lord said unto them: "Fear not, for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be for all people. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a saviour, who is Christ the Lord. "This shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." 96 Divine Science Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying: ' ' Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will toward all men." The shepherds said one to another: "Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see what has come to pass, that the Lord hath made known to us." And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe was lying in a manger. St. John, 20th Chapter, 11th Vebse. Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping, and as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre. There she saw two angels in white in a sitting posture ; the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. They said unto her: "Woman, why weepest thou ? ' ' She said unto them : ? ' Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have put him." And after she had thus spoken, she turned around, and saw Jesus standing there, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus said unto her: "Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?" Mary, supposing Jesus to be the gardener, said unto him: "Sir, if thou can tell me where thou hast put Jesus, I will take him away." Mary Magdalen came and told the disciples she had seen the Lord, and he said: "Touch me not, Divine Science 97 for I am not yet ascended to my Father. Go to my brethren and say to them : 'I am ascended unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God and your God/ " Then the same day, at evening, being the first day of the week, the doors were shut for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said unto them: " Peace be unto you. When Jesus had said this, he showed unto them his hands and his side. The disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again: "Peace be unto you; as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said unto them: "Eeceive ye the Holy Ghost." Acts 5 — Chapters 10th, 12th, 16th. But a certain man named Ananias, with Sap- phira, his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, — his wife also being privy to it, — and brought a part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. Peter said to Ananias : "Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and to keep back part of the price of the land? "It was thine own. After it was sold was it not thine own power? Why conceive this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but hast lied unto God." Ananias, hearing these words, fell down, and gave up the ghost. 98 Divine Science Great fear came over all that heard these things. The young men arose, wound him up, carried him out, and buried him three hours after. When Ananias' wife, not knowing what had been done, came in, Peter asked her, if she had sold the land for money, and for how much. She answered it had been sold for money and for so much. "Why have ye agreed together to tempt the spirit of the Lord? The feet of those that buried thy husband are at the door and shall carry thee out." She fell at his feet and yielded up the ghost. The young men found her dead, and carrying her forth, buried her by the side of her husband. Great fear came upon all that heard these things. By the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders made among the people ; they were all of one accord in Solomon's porch. Those that did not agree were magnified by the people. When the high priest rose up, and those that were with him, the sect of Sadducees, they were filled with indignation, and laid hands on the apostles, putting them into the common prison. But the angel of the Lord, at night, opened the prison doors, brought them forth, and said: "Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of the life." Acts, 10th Chapter. There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cor- nelius, a centurion of the Italian band, a devout Divine Science 99 man, one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and who prayed to God always. He saw in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming to him, and saying to him: "Cornelius." When he looked at him, he was afraid, and said unto him: "What is it, Lord?" And he said unto him: "Thy prayers and thine alms have come up for a memorial before God." And after the angel had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants, and a de- vout soldier, who waited on him continually. When he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. Acts, 12th Chapter, 5th Verse. Peter was kept in prison, but prayer was made, without ceasing by the church, unto God for him. Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and the keepers before the door watched the prison. And, behold, an angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shone in the prison; and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, say- ing: "Arise quickly." And the chains fell from his hands, and the angel said unto him : i ' Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals." And he did so. The angel con- tinued : ' l Cast thy garments about thee, and fol- low me." 100 Divine Science When Peter came to himself, he said: "Now I know for a certainty that the Lord had sent his agent to deliver me out of the hands of Herod, and from all the expectations of the people of the Jews." Peter passed through the first and second yard, they then came to the iron gate that leadeth to the city, which opened to them of its own accord, and Peter and the angel passed through one street; the angel then departed from him. Acts 16 — 9th Ve&se. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; there stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying: "Come over to Macedonia and help us." After he had seen the vision, immediately he endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gath- ering that the Lord had called him to preach the gospel unto them. Acts 27 — Verse. Paul, on his voyage to a place called Crete, toward Borne, met with a terrible storm the third day. They were compelled to cast out, with their own hands, the tacklings of the ship. Neither sun nor moon nor stars appeared in many days ; the storm continued to rage, and all hope that they would be saved was abandoned. After a long abstinence, Paul stood in the midst of them, saying: "Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, for God will land you safely to shore. I exhort you to be of good cheer. There will be Divine Science 101 no loss of any man's life among you, but only the ship — for there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose servant I am, and whom I serve/' 1 ' Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar, and, lo, God hath given thee all those that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer, for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me. How be it we must be cast upon a certain island fourteen nights?" It came; they were driven up and down in Adria. About midnight the shipmen thought they would draw near some country. The water was not very deep, and Paul feared they would fall upon rocks. The anchors were lowered, and they wished for day. The shipmen were about to flee from the ship, when they lowered the boat into the sea under colors. They fasted fourteen days. Paul prayed to them that they should eat some meat, as it was for their health, and said : ' ' Not a hair shall fall from the head of any of you." And when he had spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in the presence of all of them. "When he had broken it, he began to eat. All were of good cheer, and took some meat. There were two hundred three score and six- teen souls. When they had eaten enough, they cast the wheat into the sea, the ship falling into a place where two seas met; they ran the ship 102 Divine Science aground; and it remained immovable; the stern was broken by the violence of the waves. The soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any swam out and escaped. But the cen- turion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim, should cast themselves first into the sea and get to land. And the rest left the ship afterwards ; some on boards, and others on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass that they all safely reached land. Deut. 4th Chapter, 12th Vebse. An Exhortation. And the Lord spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire. Ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude ; only ye heard a voice. And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform,— even ten com- mandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, so that ye might exercise them in the land whither you go to pos- sess. Take ye therefore good heed unto yourself, for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spoke unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire. Divine Science 103 Ezekiel, 2nd Chapter, 9th-10th Verses. "And when I looked, behold, a hand was sent unto me ; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein. "And he spread it before me; and there was writing within and without; and there were therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe. ' ■ Joshua, 5th Chapter, 13th Verse. And it came to pass, when Joshua was at Jer- icho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, be- hold, there stood a man against him with a drawn sword in his hands. And Joshua went unto him and said: "Art thou for us or for our adver- saries ?" And he said: "Nay, but as captain of the host of the Lord have I now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him: "What saith my Lord unto his servant ? f J And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua: "Loosen thy shoes from thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy." And Joshua did so. Amos, 7th Chapter, 7th-9th Verses. ' i Thus he showed me, and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall with a plumbline in his hand." And the Lord said unto Amos: "What seest thou?" And I said: "A plumbline." Then said the Lord: "Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel. I will not pass by them again. And the high placer 104 Divine Science of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste ; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword." Amos, 8th Chapter. Thus hath the Lord God shown unto me, be- hold, a basket of summer fruit. And he said: " Amos, what seest thoul" And I said: " A bas- ket of summer fruit." Then said the Lord unto me: "The end has come upon my people of Israel. I will not pass by them again." "And the songs of the temple shall be howl- ing in that day," saith the Lord God. — "There shall be many dead bodies in every place ; they shall cast them forth with silence." "Hear this, ye, that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, saying : 4 When will the new moon be gone, that we may set forth wheat, making the epah small and the shekel great, and falsifying by deceit — that we may buy the poor a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat V " The Lord hath sworn by excellency of Jacob: "Surely I will never forget any of their works. The land shall tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein. "It shall rise up wholly as a flood, and it shall be cast out and drowned as by the flood of Egypt. "And it shall come to pass," saith the Lord God, "that I will cause the sun to go down at noon. I will darken the earth in clear day." Divine Science 105 Amos, Chapter 9, 1st Verse. I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and he said: " Smite the lintel of the door that the posts may shake, and cut every one in the head; all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword. He that fleeth of them, shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them, shall not be delivered." Dakiel, Chapter 10. Daniel, having humbled himself, seeth a vision. In the third year of the reign of Cyrus, King of Persia, a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar. And the thing was true, but the time appointed was long; and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision. In those days Daniel was mourning three full weeks. He ate no pleasant bread ; neither came flesh nor wine into his mouth. Neither did he anoint him- self at all till three whole weeks were fulfilled. And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as he was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel — he lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, he saw a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz. His body was like the beryl, his face had the appearance of lightning, his eyes were like lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet in color like pol- ished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. 106 Divine Science And Daniel said: "I was alone and saw the vision, for the men that were with me saw not the vision. 9 ' But a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. ' ' Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me, for my comeliness was turned into corruption, and I retained no strength. * ' Yet heard I the voice of his words ; and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I with a deep sleep on my face and my face towards the ground. " "And, behold, a hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. ' ' "And he said unto me: 'Oh, Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee : I am now sent. f "When he had spoken these words unto me, I stood trembling. He said unto me: 'Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thy- self before thy God, thy words were heard, and I have come for thy words.' "Etat the prince of the Kingdom of Persia with- stood me one and twenty days. "But, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the King of Persia. "Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days, for yet the vision is for many days. Divine Science 107 ki When he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. "And one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips. "Then I opened my mouth and said unto him that stood before me : '0, my Lord, by the vision, my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have re- tained no strength.' "How can the servant of this my Lord talk with this my Lord? For I have no strength, neither is there breath left in me. "There came again and touched me one who had the appearance of a man, and he strength- ened me, and said: '0, man, greatly beloved, fear not; peace be unto thee. Be strong; yea, be strong. "When he had spoken unto me, I was strength- ened, and said: 'Let my Lord speak, for thou has strengthened me.' "Then he said: 'Knoweth thou wherefore I come unto thee, and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. But I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth; and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince." St. Luke, 9th Chapter, 12-13-14-15-16-17. And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve and said unto him: "Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns 108 Divine Science and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals, for we are here in a desert place.' * But he said unto them: "Give ye them to eat." And they said: "We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; unless we should go and buy meat for all these people." For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples: "Make them sit down by fifties in a company." And they did so, and made them all sit down. Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke them, and gave to the disciples to set be- fore the multitude. And they did eat, and were all filled. And there were taken up to them twelve baskets. And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying: "Who say the people that I amf" They answered and said: "John, the Baptist, but some say, Elias, and others say, that one of the old prophets has risen again." He said unto them: "But who say ye that I am?" Peter answering, said: "The Christ of God." And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing. The son of man must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, be slain, and then rise on the third day; he said to them all: "If any man will come after me, let him deny him- self, and take up his cross daily and follow me. Divine Science 109 For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it." St. John, 2nd Chapter — 12-9 Verse. And on the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee ; and the mother of Jesus, and his disciples, were called to the marriage. When they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him: "They have no wine." (A materialization of water into wine.) When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it came (but the servants who drew the water knew), the governor of the feast called the bride- groom, and saith unto him: "Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine, and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse, but thou hast kept the good wine until now." This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this, he went down to Capernaum ; he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples; and they continued there not many days. Jesus answered and said unto them: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." Then said the Jews: "Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?" But he spoke of the temple of his body. When, therefore, he was risen from the dead, 110 Divine Science his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had said. Now, when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, on the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles, which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. "Is there convincing evidence of Immortality? May we know that the so-called Dead live?" From the nature of the case proof of immor- tality, or at least of continuity after death, is clearly possible. One can conceive of conscious existence outside the body. In fact, there is abundant evidence in the data concerning dreams, trance, somnambulism and other abnormal ex- periences, that people, while living in a physical body, are temporarily absent from it. St. Paul affirmed this possibility. Psychic Research Re- ports of Great Britain and America furnish many illustrations and proofs. Can We Identify the Returned Dead? Many admit that there are manifestations which apparently denote the presence of unseen intelli- gences, but deny that these are necessarily human intelligences. They seem to forget two very perti- nent facts; first, that in Bible times angels (or advanced spirits) are reported as appearing to men, conversing with men, inspiring and aiding Divine Science 111 men, and that the Bible expressly teaches that these angels are men; secondly, that in all these manifestations in the seance room and through psychic research today, the manifesting intelli- gences always claim to be human. The angels were at one time men on our earth plane; the Bible speaks of the same individuals indiscriminately as men and angels; the angels appeared in human form, spoke human speech, wore human raiment, evinced knowledge of human affairs, showed sympathy with men (born out of common earth experiences), and the Bible lan- guage refers to the same angelic characters some- times as men and at other times as angels. (See Gen., XVIII Ch., and Rev. XXII: 8th verse. "The man Gabriel" and "Angel Gabriel.") Moreover, all the manifestations of today in spirit circles are apparently and unquestionably of human (discarnate) origin. Spirits of mod- ern times and angels of Bible times all manifest in human form, use human language, show human sympathy, show a knowledge of and interest in human earthly affairs, and also claim to be hu- man. Despite these facts, some still deny the human origin of these phenomena, or will boldly assert the impossibility of identifying the spirits mani- festing. Christianity and Spiritualism are both equally based on the Positive Identification of the Re- turned Dead. Historic Christianity has no foun- dation if the dead cannot return and if they can- 112 Divine Science not identify themselves to mortals. This was the one distinctive message and testimony of early Christianity. This was what made Christianity a separate and distinct religion, viz., the claim that its Founder, though crucified, dead and buried, was alive and had been seen of many, and had positively identified himself to men. It was not the miracles of Jesus, not his pure and noble character, it was not his lofty morality or sub- lime teaching that constituted Christianity's sub- lime message to me. It was the Resurrection! It was the wondrous statement: this Man, cruci- fied, dead, buried, has arisen and we have seen and identified him beyond all doubt and all ques- tioning. Therefore, the identifying of the re- turned dead is as vital to Christianity as it is to Spiritualism. Indeed, primitive Christianity of the early days and pure Spiritualism of today are identical — presenting the same claims, wit- nessing the same miracles, and offering the same demonstrations to the world. We go even farther than this and venture the affirmation : Departed spirits return and identify themselves to mortals by the same evidences that mortals identify themselves to one another. Men identify themselves to their fellow men by appearance, voice, manner, habit, memory, skill, and by knowledge of particular things. A man returning to a city after ten years' of absence proves his identity to judge and jury by two or three credible witnesses who testify that they rec- ognize him and can identify him by his looks, voice, Divine Science 113 hand-writing, manner, language, peculiarities, and the judge and jury regard the case as proven. So also, returned spirits, in either the etherealized or materialized form, identify themselves by face and feature, manner, walk and significant action. In a fully materialized form they can and do manifest by speech and action. In a trumpet cir- cle they are able at times to use the magnetic forces there present to partially materialize (especially the vocal organs), and, where condi- tions are harmonious, they can reproduce the old voice and manner so perfectly as to identify them- selves without question to their friends. Hand- writing (under good magnetic and harmonious conditions) has been produced by returned spirits in the Seance Eoom that was a perfect fac-simile of their hand-writing in the mortal body. Any one who doubts this can be convinced (if they are of open, sincere mind) by studying the various testimonies and illustrations published to the world today in the literature of Modern Spirit- ualism. The Bible Aegument. All those whose minds are open to truth, beauty and lofty moral sentiment must give the Bible a high place in literature and a warm and loving veneration in their hearts, as a source of instruc- tion, comfort and inspiration to the world. This, altogether apart from the question of its divine origin and infallibility. He who cannot ap- preciate the truth and beauty found in this library 114 Divine Science (not book) shows some defect in Ms intellectual operations, or some bias in his judgment. The testimony of the Bible is, both in Old and New Testaments, united, clear, unequivocal and powerful in favor of spirit survival of death and spirit manifestation. (Granted there are a few isolated expressions in the Old Testament in favor of the materialistic position, yet not to be con- sidered in comparison with the weight of evidence on the other side.) Samuel's return to Saul and Saul's clear recog- nition of him; the hand-writing on the walls of Belshazzar's palace (where the fingers of a man's hand were seen doing the writing) ; the enhance- ment of the ancient prophets, proving their medi- umship; the significant dreams and prophecies, visions and psychic experiences portrayed in the story of the prophets ; the resurrection and posi- tive identification of Jesus through his eleven manifestations between the crucifixion and the ascension; the experiences of St. Paul, in and out of the body ; the appearance of the Angel to John in Patmos and his emphatic declaration that he was one of the "brethren," an ancient prophet; all these are only a few of the clear testimonies of the Bible to the After Life and to Spirit re- turn and identification. In fact, the Bible is a Spiritualist text-book from cover to cover. (See "Christianity and Spiritualism," Dr. Austin's 16- page pamphlet, of which over 40,000 copies have been sold; see also Dr. Moses Hull's remarkable book, " Encyclopedia of the Bible." See also, Divine Science 115 "Primitive Christianity and Modern Spiritual- ism," two volumes by Crowell.) — Dr. B. F. Austin. I now add, from the columns of "The Psychic World' ' (Philadelphia), the following remarks, hoping that some may gain courage to teach the whole truth of the Bible. Consistency. The orthodox church has been preaching im- mortality for about seventeen centuries or more. Spiritualism declares that the church is right — that immortality is true, and offers to demon- strate that it IS true. Some refuse to investi- gate. Strange, is it not? One would naturally think they would hail with joy any evidence that could be brought, and they ought to ! Any teacher who has not satisfied himself so thoroughly of the fact as to whether death means the end, or a continuation of life — that he can say definitely to a broken-hearted and bereaved parent: "Your child lives, I KNOW it" — has failed in his duty, and has no right to pose as a teacher or a leader. Do these teachers who denounce Spiritualism believe that "two angels in the form of men" appeared to Abraham; that Samuel, in a vision, saw Saul and received the clairaudient message that caused him later to crown Saul king of Israel? Do they believe that Moses and Elias, after their death, were seen by the two disciples 116 Divine Science on the mount; that Jesus appeared to His dis- ciples when they assembled — "the doors being barred?" Do they believe that John received the mysteries of the Apocalypse from an angel ?" If they do, then they should recognize the great truth of today : Spiritualism. In the following paragraphs, B. E. Canney, makes reference to a number of interesting bib- lical statements: Spiritualism iist the 'Bible. "We often hear people, who do not understand the Truth about our religion of Spiritualism, criti- cize us, because our Mediums and Speakers do not always take a text from the Bible. They for- get that we get our lectures from the same source that the writers of the Bible got theirs, hence the Bible is a text-book for us. "Now, I shall give a few references where the Philosophy and Phenomena of Spiritualism is found. Spiritualism is a power, a science, a gift of God, or as we say, a gift of the Supreme In- telligence. St. John 4-24 tells us 'in plain Eng- lish' God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. "Next in my thoughts are the Spiritual gifts. Paul tells us that those gifts are in 1 Corinthians 12: 1 to 12th verse. In the first verse he says now concerning Spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. "In the fourth verse, he says there are di- versities of gifts ; that is, one may have several Divine Science 117 gifts, but the same Spirit. Sixth verse, diversities of operation, but the same (Spirit) God, worketh, all in all. Seventh verse. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit with all. "Eighth verse. For to one is given by the Spirit 'wisdom'; to another 'knowledge' by the same Spirit. Faith by the same Spirit; to an- other gift of healing or as we call it 'magnetic healing' to another working of miracles, or dif- ferent phases of Spirit Phenomena, to another 'prophecy,' to another discerning of Spirits or 'Clairvoyance,' to another divers kinds of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. The eleventh verse says 'all these worketh by the one and the self-same Spirit,' etc. "Now we have a good illustration of divers (speaking) kinds of tongues in Acts 2: 1 to 7 verses. We have evidence of discerning (seeing) spirits in Job 4 ch. 15th verse, also in the new testament the word Angel is used very often. "Angel is a Greek word, meaning Messenger, generally used of ministering Spirits sent out as messengers to us from the Spirit side of Life. Hence our messages are entitled to be termed Angel communications. "We have the trance or Spirit control in Acts 10: 10 and in Acts 10: 19 the Spirit said unto Peter: Behold, three men seek thee. Arise and go with them, doubting nothing for I have sent them. Angel (Spirit) warns parents of Christ 118 Divine Science of danger in Matt. 2 : 12-13 and Spirit tells them when it is safe to return in Matt, 2 : 19. "Spirit light shown, Matt. 4: 16. Spirits min- ister to Christ, Matt. 4: 11. Herod thought the Nazarene was controlled by John the Baptist in Matt. 14: 2. "We often hear our orthodox friends say: 1 Those crazy Spiritualists. \ We are not any more insane than was Jesus, for his own brothers and mother and his friends thought him 'crazy/ Be- side himself, Mark 3: 21 and Mark 3: 31. "Psychic gifts of Jesus catches thoughts of Pharisees, Luke 5: 22. Angels are able to talk with us in the body again, proved in Luke 24: 23, where they said 'that he was alive. ' "Acts 2: # 17 to 19, is a very plain explanation of some of the wonders of Spiritualism. Gifts of Spirit as stated in 1st Cor. 12 ch. are promised to us and to our children, Acts 2 : 39, Peter and John heal the lame man by Spirit power, 3-6. "Peter and John realeased from prison by Spirits, Acts 5: 19. Stephen showing Spirit Phenomena, Acts 6: 8. Physical power of Spirit demonstrated, Acts 8: 39. "Peter raises woman from death, Acts 9: 40, Peter delivered from prison, Acts 12: 7 to 11. Spirit of Jesus appeared to Paul, Acts 22: 7-8. Paul tells Agrippa of seeing and hearing Spirits, Acts 26 : 13-16. "Paul says in Eomans 13: 1 and 2. "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power, but of God or Divine Science 119 Spirit, Again in St. John 19 : 11 Jesus answered, k Thou couidst have no power at all against me, except it be given thee from above,' etc. " Paul speaks about powers, etc., in Ephesians 6 : 12. The rulers of darkness referred to in this verse, are those spirits, which did not progress Spiritually when in the body, and therefore are in an earth-bound condition, where they will have to remain until they become enlightened by Truth. 1 ' There are some in this lower region, who have very strong powers and they make the most of their opportunities to visit their old associates on this side of life as well as our messengers of Truth from Higher realms. Spiritualists who desire to prove their faith by the Bible will find that it furnishes the strongest evidence. From Genesis to Revelation the nearness of the spirit world and the inter-communion of spirits and mortals runs like a golden strand in and through all its pages. Not only spirit communion, but every phase of the manifestations distinctively known as Modern Spiritualism, is represented on many occasions, often hundreds of years apart. This similarity of expression shows that the same psychic laws held then as now, and there has been no change. Spiritualism furnishes the very key whereby the mysteries of the Bible and its miracles are explained with a clearness commentators have not been able to attain for want of the knowledge it furnishes. Though angels are understood to be special creatures, and spirits to have ascended through mortal bodies, the words are used by the writers of the Bible as interchangeable as are shown by the following passages: "Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision, ' ' Daniel ix : 21. He previously says that this spirit Divine Science 125 " stood before me as the appearance of a man." Chap, vii: 15. "He maketh his angels spirits." Psalms civ: 4. Luke places departed spirits on a level with angels, xx: 36; "Neither can they die any more, for they are equal unto the angels, etc. \ ' The terms are indiscriminately used: "And as Peter knocked at the gate, a damsel came to hearken--then said they it is an angel," (spirit). Acts xii: 13, 15. "I am he that liveth and was dead, and behold I am alive forever more." Rev. i: 18. "The soul of man separated from his body." Matthew xiv: 26; Luke xxiv: 37. 'Evil Spirits — Obsession — "And it came to pass on the morrow that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul." I Sam. xviii: 10; Mark i: 12-13; Eph. vi: 12; II Tim. ii: 26; Math, iv: 24; viii: 16-28-33. Spiritual Body — "There is a natural body and a spiritual body." I Cor. xv: 44. Physical Manifestations — The angel unloosed Peter from chains in prison : — "When they were past the first and second ward they came to the iron gate that leadeth into the city, which opened to them of its own accord, and they went out." Acts, xii: 7-10. "And when they came unto Lehi the Philistines shouted against him, and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt w \th 126 Divine Science fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands." Jud. xv : 14. A fine physical manifestation is re- corded in Ex. xiv: 25, where the Lord "took off the chariot wheels" of the Egyptians. "An angel went before them in a pillar of cloud," Ex. xiv: 19. The moving of the table is represented by an angel rolling back the stone from the door of the sepulchre. Math, xxviii: 2. Inspiration and Mediumship — "For to one is given by the spirit the word of wisdom ; to another the word of knowledge by the same spirit." I Cor. xii: 8. "And the spirit en- tered into ibe when he spake unto me." Ezek. ii : 2. To whom hast thou uttered words, and whose spirit came from thee ? ' J Job xxvi : 4. Speaking in Unknown Tongues — "To another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues. I Cor. xii: 10. "And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the spirit (which controlled them) gave them utterance." Acts ii : 4. "If a man speak in an unknown tongue let it be by two or at most by three, and that by course, and let one interpret." I Cor. xiv: 2, 27. If there was no interpreter they were to keep silent, for "the spirits of the prophets are sub- ject J;o the prophets." It appears that they had a great deal of trouble in the meetings, or St. Paul would not have cautioned them to have all "done decently and in order." Divine Science 127 Materialization; Clairvoyant Appearances — "An angel appeared to Hagar." Gen. xvi; three came to Abraham so perfectly materialized that "they did eat." Gen. xviii; and again to re- strain him from sacrificing his son; to Lot, Chap. xix; an angel wrestled with Jacob, xxxii: 24; an angel spoke to all the people, Jud. ii; came and sat under an oak and talked to Gideon, Jud. vi ; to Manoah, xiii ; the spirit of Samuel conversed with Saul, I Sam. xxviii; an angel came and fed Elijah, I Kings xix : 5-8 ; protected the three Hebrew chil- dren from fire, Dan. iii. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, Math, i; Moses and Elias ap- peared on the Mount; an angel appeared to the two Marys at the sepulchre ; to Zacharias, Luke i ; to Mary, Luke i; to the shepherds, Luke ii; to Mary Magdalene, John xx; opened the prison doors, Acts v; to Cornelius, Acts x; to Peter, in prison, Acts xii; to Paul in "vision," Acts xvi and xxvii; and in Deut. iv: 12. A "materialized" book was shown, Eze. ii: 9. Joshua saw and con- versed with a spirit who held a drawn sword in his hand, Josh, v: 13. And in Amos it is said that the "Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumb line with a plumb line in His hand." The line, as well as the sword, must have been materialized, or they could not have been visible. Samuel ap- peared, "covered with a mantle." A spirit ap- peared to Daniel "clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold." Dan. x. Feeding 128 Divine Science the multitude of 5000 on five loaves and two fishes. Luke ix : 12-17. Making wine at the mar- riage feast. St. John ii: 1-9. And lastly, the sev- eral materializations of Christ after the cruci- fixion. Amazing will be the records of spirit manifestations. Trance — "How he was caught up into Paradise and heard unspeakable words which is not lawful for man to utter." II Cor. xii: 2-4. Like all those who have fallen into trance, he did not know "whether in the body or out of the body." "Which say -the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open." Num. xxiv : 16. Bead Gen. xv : 12, Dan. viii : 18, x : 7-9, II Cor. xii : 2-4, xxiv : 16 ; Acts x : 9-10, xxii : 17. Ministry of Angels — "And the angels ministered unto him." Mark i : 13. "And the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven," when she was deserted in the wilder- ness. Gen. xxi : 17. ' ' The angels of the Lord en- camp around about them that fear Him, and de- livereth them." Psalm xxxiv: 7. "For He shall give his angels (spirits) charge over there, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." Psalm xci: 11-12, Math, xxvi: 53, Acts v: 18-19 and viii: 26 to 38. A man (spirit) ap- peared to Paul and told him to "come over into Macedonia and help us." Acts 16-19. "Are they Divine Science 129 not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs to salvation?" Heb. 1-14. Paul had a clear understanding of spiritual agencies. "Likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities. * ' Bom. viii : 26. Direct Spirit Writing — On the walls of Babylon: "In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand and wrote over against the candle-stick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace, and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote." Dan. v: 5. David received the plan of the temple from a spirit: "And the pattern of all he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the Lord." David gave to Solomon: I Chron. xxviii. The nineteenth verse says: "All this said David, the Lord made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, even all the work of this pattern." "There came a writing to him (Jehoram) from Elijah the prophet." II Chron. xxi: 1. Accord- ing to the chronology, Elijah had been for some time dead, and hence it must have been by his spirit. Levitation — "And when they came up out of the water the spirit of the Lord caught away Philip and the eunuch saw him no more — but Philip was found at Azotus." Acts viii: 39-40. The meaning in- tended, evidently is that Philip was transported by spirit power. This is clearly expressed in Ezk. 130 Divine Science iii: 14: "So the spirit lifted me up and took nie away." And more explicit, viii: 3: "And he put forth the form of an hand and took me by a lock of mine head, and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought m& in the visions of God to Jerusalem- ." I Kings, xviii: 12. Elisha caused iron to swim. II Kings, vi : 6. Christ walked upon the sea. Mark, vi : 49. Clairvoyance — ' i Come see a man who told me all things I ever did: is not this the Christ?" John, iv: 16 to 20. Stephen, Acts, viii: 55-56, "Behold I see the heavens opened and the son of man standing at the right hand of God." Paul was clairvoyant Acts xxvi. Samuel is consulted as a seer by Saul. I Sam. ix: 10 to 20, xxviii: 71; John iv: 16-29; Acts vii : 55-56 ; xxvii : 9-44. Clairaudience — "And he fell to the earth and heard a voice say unto him: 'Saul, why persecutest thou me so?' And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man." Acts iv: 4-7. The apostles heard the voices of Moses and Elias on the mount. Math, xvii: 39; Rev. i: 10. "Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came." I Sam. ix : 15-16. Peter hears a spirit voice. Acts x: 13. See Zech. 1: 9, 13; ii: 1, 7; v: 5, 10; vi: 4. To those who accept the Bible as the Word of Divine Science 133 Authority, here is a mass of testimony that is overwhelming. To those who recognize the Bible only as a history of primitive times, the physical significance of these passages has profound in- terest. The Spiritualist sees in them man's early con- ception, as a spiritual being, of his relation to the immortal future; the beginning and fore-shadow- ing of that philosophy which, by the evolution of thought, becomes the positive Spiritual Science of Life, Here and Hereafter. What study can be of more profound interest to man? — The Psychic World Monthly, Phila- delphia, Pa. 134 Divine Science INSTRUCTIONS TO INVESTIGATORS AND STUDENTS OF DIVINE SCIENCE. Unfoldment for Mediumship. "What phase of mediumship can be brought to me?" This question is often asked by students. The decision must be left entirely to God and spirit friends— not to the teacher. First, you must learn the way to attract the higher forces, then keep at it till you develop some form of mediumship. This rests with the student, as psychic power resides within each person — not in the teacher as a dispenser. Development (like in seeds) means power from (within) one's soul. Each student must water the seed with patience, diligence and prayer, in order to make development blossom into the rose of mediumship. Some people imagine that a particular form of mediumship can be brought, at one 's bidding, like an order given at a restaurant for some special dish. This cannot be done by any of us mortals. We must sit in silence at the feet of spirits of enlightenment and of righteousness, and they will discover the capabilities (as an instrument) that are resting within us. Then, by co-operative ef- fort, between student, spirits, and teacher, some satisfactory result will be accomplished in due time. No exact time can be stated, as the teacher cannot control spirits. Spirit friends are masters of the. situation, and Divine Science 135 are always at hand to help us. But, please re- member, that "Heaven helps those who help them- selves,' ' by each one doing his duty, by reliance on his own inner capabilities — not depending solely on the teacher. The teacher places a lesson in your hands, and it remains for you to diligently study, learn, meditate, concentrate, comprehend — and then to apply the knowledge, yourself. Psychic Besults. So many students slight their lessons, that I must urge one and all to do their best, to get sure and lasting results. A teacher directs; but the study — the work — must all be done by the student. My prayer, my experience, my great psychic power and loving-kindness are extended to each student — to all humanity longing for knowledge of the Great Beyond. Mentor, Psychic, Inspirational Teacher and Author. Inspirational Instructions. CHAIN OF UNITED HELPERS. WATCHWORDS : WISDOM, LOVE AND TRUTH. Those who live a serene and pure life, find that the mind is elevated to higher aspiration and to self-control. Pure thoughts and silent communion with God for all that is soul-inspiring, gives power and strength of self-mastery over all material and earthly conditions which tend to obstruct one's progress, success, and happiness in life. In the stillness, in the silence, the vibrations of peace, love, and harmony are obtained ; not in the noisy street is happiness found, but where "Wisdom and Knowledge is sought. To unfold one's mentality is to seek to develop the talent that is best adapted to one 's attainment and then to diligently put forth every effort to accomplish that desire — to maintain all knowledge and wisdom (that is to be sustained through in- spiration and aspiration) of God's given power. Divine Science 139 Success and happiness will come to all who put their faith in the Supreme Intelligence — the great source of all life and truth. There is an abundance for all in the storehouse (in the heavens above) for those who earnestly seek wisdom, love and truth. Evening Exercise. 1. On retiring, ask God to instruct your soul to teach you during your sleep. This will assist you next day in leading you to correct acts. 2. Ask God to instruct your soul to permeate every detail of your business and social life, with the power and harmony that will bring you a righteous and pure success. 3. Ask God to instruct your soul to give your body that rest which will renew its powers to accomplish results ever without friction or strain. Morning Exercise. 1. On waking, ask God to instruct your soul to give you the right thoughts, right speech, right desires, right acts. 2. Then, in silent thought and contemplation, say that you are a part of God. ISPThe foregoing constitutes your First Lesson. Eepeat daily for one month. Dear Friend : As one "link" in our chain of united helpers, I send to you my sincere good wishes for your 140 Divine Science progress and success. May your earnest desires (for good) be fully gratified. I, and the hidden force, will help you. At noon hour, every day, please spend a few minutes in silent prayer for yourself, and also for all other members of our Chain of United Help- ers — and spend the same time in prayer for all humanity. Miss A. M. Eobinson. There is no charge whatever for joining our circle or chain. (Voluntary contributions — give as you receive.) LESSON NO. 2. To Each Student of My Glass: (Bead this every day, and meditate over it for one hour.) Spiritual philosophy teaches all that is true; one becomes spiritualized and adopts the law of divinity — of Infinite Intelligence. The soul is based upon a solid foundation, receiving and main- taining the good discipline of spiritual teachings, giving our earnest desires for the best spiritual intelligence to impress on our mind all that is intellectual and pure in thought, to cultivate mind power, so that the sub-conscious mind will be en- abled to reach out into the astral plane. Let those who are true to themselves put forth every effort to live a Christ-like life. Divine Science 141 When messages are received, truthful impres- sions will be received, to be both helpful and ben- eficial to others. Let good spiritual-minded mor- tals instruct those minds of good habits, to draw them nearer and nearer to the spiritual knowledge and phenomena of Spiritualism. Mortals' minds are being drawn to reasoning thoughts and good vibrations from pure hearts and minds, which, with velocity, are accurately received by the receptive mind, unconsciously re- ceived by the sub-conscious mind, which is made recipient to the conscious mind. The brain re- searches the science and philosophy of Spiritual- ism, which brings reasoning ideas and knowledge of science, philosophy, psychology, intellectual teaching, scientific (brain) phrenology, etc. Science is characteristic of man's scientific re- searches of the earth and heaven above to gain knowledge of the planetary system and starry heaven, the distance from earth and the inhabi- tants of each solar system, and research of the zodiac's stars and planets, including the moon and those which are largest in circumference, — science, theologically speaking, the greatest of theological knowledge and intuitive brain force. The road to success is: seeking diligently for the highest and test of spiritual intelligence — and for the best in social life. Prayee (with hands uplifted). 0, thou, the fount of eveiy blessing, tune my heart to sing thy praise again, to give thanks unto thee for thy blessings. 142 Divine Science May my angel band ever grow stronger, as I grow stronger with them, and become the power to stand pleasing to thee and all mankind. Let thy blessing be poured out upon those who are suffering and make me the fit subject to dem- onstrate thy work — forever I pray. Amen, and Amen. Miss A. M. Robinson. LESSON NO. 3. Reading Exercise and Meditation for Spiritual Unfoldment. I await thy presence in the silence of my soul, 0, holy Spirit. In the silent chamber of the soul, I find health and my supply. I am never apart from thee, sweet silence of God ; and in my spirit relatives and friends and in thee, I rest. Every atom of my being feels thy presence in the silence, 0, holy spirit. Health, peace, success and plenty, I find in thee, Sweet Holy Presence. The deep things of God are mine when I abide with him in silence. 0, Lord, how I love thy temple, the home of the soul. I am Silent. Divine Science 143 Give unto me that spirit power, and spiritual un- derstanding that I may unfold my psychic gift and power. Give unto me knowledge and Wis- dom to research into the science and philosophy of Spiritualism and spirit return. O, thou Supreme Power of the universe, help me to the unf oldment of developing into the spir- itual field of advancement, and achievement of all that is obtainable from the psychical world beyond — the world of spirits. In silence I now seek earnestly, with prayer to God, knowing that I will get spiritual uplift- ment. I ask God, in the silence, to give me strength and power to draw enlightened spirits to me and to manifest unto me such knowledge as will enable me to see the light of truth, from the angel spirits in the Sphere-of-Progress, in heaven. Silence gives me health and soul-power to com- mune with spirit relatives and friends. Silence is the key to all life and power. Silence means to Be still, without thought. Silence is God, and all that pertains to God. Silence is the Temple of the living God. Silence is the "still small voice," found only within. Silence is the soul's resource of expression, souPs freedom. Silence is the holy-of -holies, where all are one. 144 Divine Science Silence is the only way of Satisfaction, the Way- of-Life. Silence is the Christ — within— the one who lives close to God. Silence is haven of rest and peace. Silence is spirit manifestation, growth, unfold- ment, for in spirit we live, move and have our being. In silence I commune with thee, 0, holy Spirit, in peace and love. Thy temple within me, God, is the place of peace and rest. I abide in peace and love with my Lord, in his temple — the silence. The spirits manifest in and through me when I am still with God. Miss A. M. Robinson, Divine Science Teacher, Valhalla, New York. LESSON NO. 4. To Each Student: Miss A. M. Robinson, Mentor and psychic teacher, hands this inspired writing to you, called Natural and Spiritual Being, as your Fourth Lesson Study it this way: Read it carefully to get its general sense, and see how many different ethical and spiritual principles it contains. Try to com- Divine Science 145 mit these principles to memory. Ask yourself questions about this lesson. Try to re-write this lesson, using your own lan- guage, and giving your comments on each para- graph. Send your composition to me before you receive your fifth lesson. Also let your composition include your com- ments on your three previous lessons. Natural, and Spiritual. Being. The power of the Word is manifested within me — I AM understanding. Soul-power is that state of consciousness which the subconsciousness of mind manifests in activity with brain, mind and reasoning senses, or thought, enabling one to travel out and into the astral plane, and to exhibit mental aspiration, so as to be receptive — thus receiving the mental views that are pictured on the brain. By so doing, psychic abilities receive force, strength, and power to attract, obtain, and sus- tain its newness, with power of a spiritual being — which has left the natural being — to a spiritual awakening. This shows you how to use your spiritual heal- ing power to control your own vibratory forces, and to direct your mental life, so that there will be harmony of body, mind, and soul. There needs to be an understanding how to har- monize the physical, mental and spiritual facul- ties, so that there may be established unison with the Great Mind and principles of nature. 146 Divine Science By building a firm foundation, the universal laws live in every organism. One's perception of the laws and forces helps one to build, by Truth, and the conscious prin- ciples of spirit-life. Spirit is the life of all or the cause of all un- foldment. It expresses itself in matter, through motion. Thus we have the Force (with positive and negative actions), that combines and re- combines all elements. Vibrations of soul are from vibratory forces of spirit within, that is filled with all the spiritual principles and the higher constructive elements of life ; and the soul is ever giving forth these deli- cate and beautiful vibrations that are filled with every love element of our life. These sensations and emotions (which are the finer faculties, and the more refined constructive processes) are ever radiated upon the mind from higher spirits and who have more perfect condi- tions within themselves, because they are untir- ing in their efforts to strengthen, sustain, upbuild, reconstruct, and inspire us through the mind to the physical organism. When we are in a healthy condition, more re- fined, and more progressed, we are more con- sciously responsive to the vibrations which are so filled with principles of Spirit Divine. The more refined vibrations are stronger and more powerful than the heavier vibrations — which seem to be denser and more material. Re- fined vibration is divine energy, itself. These vi- Divine Science 147 brations change the very color of physical emana- tion, as they show themselves in one's aura or magnetic atmosphere. The result in every way (every form, every ex- pression) is proportionate to the changes of vi- bration ; so that the condition desired is to obtain a complete balance of vibratory systems. We seek harmonious relation of all vibration to every part of the body, and interblending of powers with life principles of the physical and spiritual being. The highest expression of wisdom is that which expresses the beauty, strength and love elements, of Deity. By attaining to this Intelligence, unfoldment, and power, you become more and more conscious of the quality of vibratory forces. The spiritual insight is far superior to the ma- terial. So quick and so complete, it is, of itself, like a photographic process. The spiritual facul- ties become unfolded in wisdom. By your spiritual consciousness recognizing this, you become brave — you are awakened to the 148 Divine Science • . highest powers. You are limitless because you are dealing with the Highest Power. The different avenues to the soul must be found, according to your development and condition, each day as psychic strength is given to you. LESSON NO. 5. The Awakening of the Solar. Plexus. What is the solar plexus? It is soul-consciousness that lives on, after the spirit leaves the mortal body. Divine Science 149 What is meant by the awakening of the soul- consciousness in the mortal body? A newness of life that enthrones our being; a oneness with the Supreme Power — God. When in harmony with God and our f ellowman, we receive intellectual intelligence from the priesthood of the oriental realms of heavenly bliss. Through and by what avenues are we lead? Into the paths of progress, higher attainment, aspiration, wisdom of spiritual inspiration, and astral flights to scenes of yonder grandeur and beauty — guarded by our angel-band with the halo, and beauty of radiance beaming from spiritual intelligences, fitting us for the mission that God has assigned, for his instruments to follow — and to humiliate to submissiveness, the undeveloped mind of mortals to the beckoning call. What is Spirit? A unit that lives with God, being upon the pin- nacle of aspiration, with Christ living within us as a being of loyalty, royalty, and with honorable character of manhood and womanhood. What is attitude of the solar plexus ? Attitude includes your motives, your beliefs, your impulses. Therefore, your thoughts, words, and deeds, ex- press your attitude. Eemember, attitude controls only the living by the use of the spirit forces. 150 Divine Science Life or God-power is perfect and unchanging. Be silent — for the sole purpose of knowing conscious unity communion with God, wherein you receive guidance each day for every ac- tivity of thought, word, and deed. Do all things heartily and wholly unto him, the Lord thy God, with all your soul-power, mind, heart, and strength ! Unfoldment of one's mediumship or psychic ability, is the research of psychology. And mor- tals seek unfoldment of mediumship so as to sat- isfy their yearning for the growth of psychic abil- ity and for the power of occultism. Miss A. M. Eobinson, Divine Scientist, Mentor and Psychic. LESSON NO. 6. Full Power — Out and Onward. One cannot easily find fit words of expression for this noble work of Spiritual progression, un- foldment and knowledge of the spirit-realm — which implies spirit life in the spirit-world, and the return of spirits to mortals, whereby one learns the truth and gets the proof of immortality. We receive the divine spiritual power from the higher spheres, enabling us to stand up and to give out to the multitude from an awakened solar plexus to acknowledge the one Supreme Power, Divine Science 151 who gives to every one such gifts and talents as will qualify one to use his psychic ability to the greatest advantage. Let us stand out as a golden image, with flag-of- victory, and show that justice will come to those who live upright lives in the sight of God. Victory, you shall wear ! Let us achieve all that is upright and uplifting — and let nobility be our standard. Make a grand stand, and be a master key, and let nothing dare to hinder you in your journey toward that which is right and true ! Ask God to remove the scales from your eyes, to see and behold ; and to unlock the doors of your ears, so that you may hear the voice which comes so clear to us. Let your brain cells be opened and filled, so that the knowledge may flow as freely as water from a fountain. Give out as freely as you have received from impressions, of knowledge and wisdom of the great and noble Being from on high, by inspira- tion. March onward, with victory, for God and man- kind!! Stand up for all that is good and true, and the crown of victory you shall wear ! ! ! Yours, for Spiritual Victory, Miss A. M. Robinson, Inspired Teacher of Divine Science. 152 Divine Science ADDENDUM. Explanatory Letter, from an advanced student of psychology to Miss Bobinson, teacher of Divine Science (mentor and psychic), Valhalla, N. Y. [The following private letter is from a student of spirit phenomena; and he now relates in his own way, his experience with the phenomenon called Trumpet-Speaking — in which spirits talk through a trumpet to the student, direct — which is a positive proof of spirit-return.] Dear Miss Bobinson: ' Now, in regard spirit to trumpet work, I never had any experience with a trumpet, nor ever tried it, till after I had about ten sittings in a public psychic class. Even then, I always got loud voices and mes- sages when I was in the public class that I first joined, but they (the spirit messages) never were complete — as it seemed to me that spirit friends do not speak of private matters before any one else, other than the person intended. At times, at home, after this, I was very nerv- ous. I thought I heard whispering, in the air, in my room. I told the class medium, or leader, about it, but he didn't seem to know much about it, nor was he able to advise me. He only said it was a com- mon occurrence, and added that I was developing early. This did not seem to be helpful advice to me. Divine Science 153 Those from whom I then sought advice failed to help me. So I started to think and act on my own ideas. I made a trumpet from common wrapping paper, pasting it together well to make it some- what like the metal ones that were used in the class meetings at night, in a dark class-room. I put the trumpet on a chair, near my bed, and sometimes I placed it on a shelf in the room; and after this, I heard a spirit whisper from the trum- pet. This placed me in a very nervous state. I lay down on the bed one evening, and put the trumpet to my ear, and I heard my name called, over-and-over, many times. "It is I," the spirit voice said to me, and then told me who they were. This gave me a very strange feeling. I shiv- ered and trembled from head to foot ! — I learned later that the spirit was drawing on my nervous force and power to give them strength to come through the air to me, nearer. Some evenings I would lie down on the bed to rest myself for half an hour, and I then would place my trumpet on the floor, or chair. When re- laxed and feeling at ease, I would hear very faint whispers, that seemed to come from the furniture. Then I took the trumpet and put it to my ear, and I got many messages — although very faint ones, at times. 154 Divine Science They (the spirit messages in my trumpet) were repeated over and over, until they were made plain. At various times I was told to go to the window, in the room : the voice then came clearer, and the voice seemed to be carried into the room by the current of air. After this, every evening, I would lie down on my bed and try for messages — and got them quite often. Afterwards, I bought a metal trumpet, as a metal one is more vibrant than one made of paper. Metal trumpets give a ringing sound to the spirit- voice. I put my trumpet on the floor beside my bed, every night. Now I receive spirit-messages through my trumpet before I go to sleep. And when I am sitting idle in my room, or work- ing around at something, I hear a spirit voice calling me. I find it quite proper to answer such calls promptly. Now, I think that other students should enter a public class, at first — with a few other good earnest students. Or, I would advise other students to sit in a home-circle, "with a few personal friends, who are psychic to some extent. It is a very well known fact that many great and wonderful things have taken place in a pri- vate home-circle, where a few of the right kind of people gather with good and reasonable atten- tions. Their one object should be to demonstrate the fact of spirit-return — not idle amusement. DivineScience 155 A private home-circle is to be preferred to a public one where novelty and wonder-mongers very often go — the kind of mixed meetings where strangers go. I found from my own experience that mixed meetings do not do very much lasting good. I speak from experience. They only en- tertain. My advice is for each student to try the trumpet by the bedside, to get trumpet speaking, as the darkness is favorable for good results in all physical phenomena, in contradistinction to purely mental spirit-phenomena.
