There had been for many generations a contest between the Indians and the English in Maine. When Father Rasle, the French missionary, came to Old Point in 1695, the contest for supremacy became more bitter as Rasle was not only desirous of having the Indians continue to hold the territory along the Kennebec, but wanted to hold the English at bay until the French should as- sume control. The Indian, tossed between the surges of hatred that rolled between the English and the French, was destined to destruction. That destruction came in the month of August, 1724, when the English Captain Harmon at the head of two hundred armed men arrived at Old Point and recklessly shot, pillaged, and burned the beautiful Indian village. Rasle was 6 HISTORICAL shot and scalped, with a hirgc number of his dusky converts. Tlie Catliolic cliapcl was burned. Men, women, cliildren were ruthlessly slaughtered. The tribe was tore\er broken uji. The most ot'the last of the famous Norridgewocks gathered about the Catholic mission, at St. Francis, (^lebec. A few located along the banks of the Sandy ri\er, but at the approach of the whites, all sa\e Pierpole, a famous Indian chief ot Franklin c()unl\-, lied to parts unknown. The sad late of the Norridgewocks has brought lorth from the pen of Poet and Historian many a line. All mourn the un- happy end of the gaUant and enthusiastic missionary who labored so zealously to establish the Christian faith in the hearts of the red-skinned children of na- ture. All mourn the loss of home which befel the Norridgewocks, but we can only say it was one of the inevitable results of the progress of ci\ ilization. Early Settlement The town ot Solon was first settled in 1782 and was one of the leading towns in the county for many years. At an earl}- date the great tertility of the lands along the Kennebec became well known and move- ments were made to improxe them. JSolon was well up in the vallev where the width was less but had manv of the fme farms so common to the region HISTORICAL 7 below. So far as we have been able to learn William Hilton was the first white settler. He came to Solon in the summer ol 1782 and made a clearing and built his log cabin. He returned to Anson to spend the winter with a brother who lived there. In the follow- ing year he came back with his wife and son, David, when he made his permanent settlement on Lot 17. This was the first permanent settlement in town. Mr. Hilton come trom Wiscassett. His two brothers set- tled just north of Patterson Bridge. This same spring William Hunnewell settled here. He took up a lot which has since been divided. The old Hunnewell homestead is now the property ol Zina Norton. This was a hundred acre lot. Not far trom this time Luther Pierce settled on a lot between lots 26 and 25. This place is now owned by Sarah B. Pierce. The next lot of 100 acres below this one was taken up at about the same time by Jona- than Bosworth. It is now occupied by Fred Magoon. Eleazar Whipple, one of the settlers who were here prior to 1784, settled on Lot 25 now the property ot Alfreda B. Withington. Next to Mr. Whipple and at about the same time came Moses Chamberlain on Lot 24. This lot has also been divided. The north halt is now owned by Joseph C. and George B. Pierce. The south half is now the property of Charles Clark. Moses Thompson also settled on a lot of one hun- dred acres now owned b}' Hiram C. Rice. b HISTORICAL Other Early Settlers. Josi.'ili French came from Saulisbiiry, Mass., in 1800 and settled on wliat is locally known as French Ilill. I lis grandson Josiah French lives there today. Moses F'rench who came irom the same place as Josiah settled also on French Hill in 1802, took up the lot ad- joining Josiah French's. Nicholas Smith settled near the town line of Bingham and Solon a little to the east of the river. John, Silas, and Simon Maynard settled on the river road in 1802. Not far from this time Moses and Samuel Eaton came from Saulisbury and took up lots on what is now known as Eaton Hill, about four miles east of the village. Benjamin Merrill who was also from Saulisbury, Mass., came to Solon at an early date and settled east of French Hill. Matthew San- born settled on Fall Brook about one mile northeast from the \illage. He was from Massachusetts. These settlers were allowed the above mentioned lots in the survey made by Samuel Weston in 1791. The settlers lots beside the above were as follows: David Pierce, Lot No. 27 of 200 acres l3'ing wholly in the town of Bingham. On this lot at this time there was a house. David Pierce the owner was a single man and lived with his brother," Calvin Pierce on the lot next below. Mrs. Fla\ ilia Jewett now owns the place. Calvin Pierce was assigned in the survey the lot which is now the property ot Henry F. Maynard. HISTORICAL 9 To Moses Ayer Island "H" in the Kennebec river containing 88 acres was set off. He also had a small island west of "Island IF' containing live acres, "ot no great value except to guard the large island." To William Hilton in addition to the Lot 17 was allotted Island "D" of 18 acres adjoining the front of Lot 17. Mr. Weston's return sa3-s "This Island will accomodate Lot 17 well." The above gives in brief the information available concerning the earliest comers to the town ot Solon. o Before we continue farther it is perhaps well to con- sider the circumstances which led to the settlement and survey of the town and the dissentions which fol- lowed and which are of interest to every citizen of the town. After the close of the Revolutionary War, even the boundar}- lines of Massachusetts and her sister states were not entirely settled. There was a controversy between Massachusetts and New York over the line between them. The line- was run and it was found that certain lands granted by Massachusetts to settlers in the town of Groton laid within the bounds of New York. Hence the grant was void, and these settlers had no claims on the lands above mentioned. On Februrary 18, 1791 the General Court of Mas- sachusetts passed a resolve on Petition of James Pres- cott in behalf of the proprietors of the town of Groton praying compensation may be made them for land lost lO HISTORICAL by running the line between this commonwealth and the state of New York. Whereupon 6500 aeres ol land were laid out on the south side ol wliat was later llie t()\\'n of Solon bouiuled on tlie north h/V a line parallel with the south line otthe town, and so far distant therei'rom as to in- elude 6,300 aeres exelusive ot 500 aeres laid oil to settlers In' Sanuiel Weston ;ind reser\ed lor tlu-m. 'I'he land eon\eved by this resohe \^'as subsecpiently deeded to Thomas Spaulding, et al. This deed with the settlers lots eo\ered the south 7000 aeres ot the town of Solon. On the twentx'-lourth of January, 1792 for the reason <;"i\c:n abo\ e there was granted to Palmer Gardener et al, jiroprietors of Groton 3S.S0 aeres ol land in Solon, bounded on south by land granted to Thomas Spaulding, et al, and on north by a line paral- lel to and three miles distant trom the south line ol the town exelusive of lour lots ol 160 acres each reserved tor public uses, \iz: one for the lirst settled minister, one for the use of the ministry, one for the use ot schools in the said township ajul one lor the tuture ap- propriation of goNernment, to be laid out near the cen- ter of the township and to axerage in goodness with the other lots therein. Including the public lots this grant contained 4520 acres and was bounded on the south hv the land granted to Thomas Spaulding et al.; and on the north b\- a line running east from the Kennebec Rixer par- HISTORICAL ir allel to and three miles distant from the south line of the town. There was a similar controvers}' betw^een the Commonwealth ol Massaehusetts and the state of New Hampshire over the state line, Massachusetts having granted to Thomas Stevens et al. certain lands in the town of Warner which were afterwards found to be in the state of New Hampshire. To compensate them for the loss of their land there was granted to Jona- than Barnard et al. a tract of land six miles in length and three miles in breadth from any of the unappro- priated lands in the counties of Lincoln, Hancock, or Washington. Pursuant to the grant there was deeded to Jonathan Barnard and others the north half of the town of Solon, bounded on the south b}' a line parallel to and three miles distant fVom the south line of the town, reserving four lots of land equal in quality with the rest of i6o acres each for public uses, viz., one for the first settled minister, one for the use of the minis- try, one for the use of the schools, and one for the future appropriation of the General Court. There was also reserved in the deed to Barnard et al, to Calvin Pierce, Eleazar Whipple and Moses Chamberlain, settlers on settlers lots, so called, 200 acres each, and to Luther Pierce, Moses Thompson and Jonathan Bosworth 100 acres each. The said Luther Pierce and Moses Thompson, who were set- tlers since the year 1784 paying each of them th^ grantees in the resolve $20 and the said Jonathan 12 HISTORICAL Bosworth a settler bclorc the year 1784 paying them $5.00. Apparenth' tlie two deeds of the south lialf" to the proprietors ol" (jroton were treated by them as one grant. They lirst sold to John Ware 3672 aeres from the west end of their grant, bounded on the west by the river, on the east by a line at right angles to the south line of the town and fai enough east to inelude the abo\e mentioned number of aeres. In 1792 the north half was sur\eyed and lotted into 80 aere lots by Benjamin Poor. That ]-)art of the south half belonging to Spaulding, Gardener and others w^as lotted by Daniel Steward into 160 aere lots. Subsequently the southwest part of the town sold to John Ware et al. was surveyed and lotted by Eleazar Coburn. Neither Ik-njamin Poor nor Daniel Steward had the authorit\- to run the di\ ision line between the owners of the nortli and south halves. Both ran their range lines east and west parallel to the township lines. Poor working tVom the north line and Steward work- ing from the south line. 'I'he ranges were intended to be one half a mile wide so that Poor ran liis south range line two and a halt" miles distant from the north line of the town. Steward intended to ha\ e done the same thing but his ehainmen missed a tally in eaeh ol the tirst and fourth ranges so his north range line whieh should have been two and a half miles north from the south line of the town was aetuall>- run l()rt^■ rods farther HISI'ORICAL 13 north. The proprietors of the halves oftlie town e\i- dentl}' supposing that eaeh owned one half of it agreed that Daniel Steward should run the division line. In 1802 Daniel Steward measured from the south line to the north line ot the town and run a line in the center from east to west, and found the town to be from south to north six miles and forty rods. Meanwhile the owners of the south tier of lots in the north half and the north tier of lots in the south half each owning as they supposed a half mile north and south had found that between Poor's south range and Steward's north range line there was, just a mile, had caused a line to be run east and west across thfe town midway between the two range lines for the bounds of their respective lots. Owing to the mistake made by Steward in his survey this division line was twent}' rods north of the division line run by Steward in 1802. By the terms of their grant, the proprietors of the north half were to leave for public uses four lots ot 160 acres each. On apportioning the land among them- selves they lacked land for the public lots. About this time thev apparentlv discovered their grant extended south to a line three miles distant from the south line of the town which would be twenty rods south of the division line run bv Steward in 1802. Subsequentlv the proprietors of the north half dis- covered that the agreement under which Steward ran the division line in 1802 was a mistake on their part. Instead of ow^ning to the center of the town they owned 14 IIIS'I'OKICAL to a line three miles north ot the south line. In 1811 the}' employed John G. Neal to run the line division true. Neal's line was twenty rods south of the line run by Steward. The town of Solon was ineorporated in 1809 and in 1813 the town petitioned the Cireuit Court of Common Pleas at Norridgewock praying that a eommittee be appointed to designate and set ot\' the se\eral lots of land reserved in the original grants lor the use of the said town and for public uses. Whereupon E. Cobinn, Elihu Bowerman, and AVilliam S^•lvester were ap- pointed as a committee to locate the public lots. The Forty Rod Strip. There were three hundred and twent}' acres lack- ing in the north half for public uses, and the committee relying upon the wording of the original grant set of the east four miles of the forty rod strip h ing between the line twent}' rods north ot Steward's center line and a line twenty rods south ol" it, which was run bv the committee or had been run by some person now un- known since Steward ran his Center line in 1802. The owners of the lots in the south half ol the town adjoining these public lots had been deeded lots measuring 160 rods north and south. They were bounded on the south by Steward's north range line and the one hundred and sixty rc^ls deeded them included the public lots. So when these two public lots were laid out it took from the adjoining settlers on the south a IIISTOHKAI- 15 strip ol land U)riy rods wide ;iiid four miles long. This was deemed by them to be a great hardship and was in after times a eaiise of much contro\ersey and several lawsuits. The influence ot the ancient settlers in town atfairs was such that the town asserted no claim to the school lots or the forty rod strip tor more than 35 years. About 1850 the trustees of the school fund asserted their claim and the adjoining owners paid small amounts into the school lund ol the town to bu}' up their titles. Incorporation. Methodist Episcopal Churcil For nian\' \cars Solon was included in Norridgc- wock Circuit and was rcguarly \isited by the preach- ers iVom that place, but the early records ha\e been lost so that wc ha\'e a meagre record of the work that was done, until 1805 when Daniel Ricker was the pastor. At that time a great re\ival swept over the town. It still continued a part of Norndgewock Cir- cuit until as late as 1830 when it was set off from the former, and Rev. E. Ilotchkiss was the preacher in charge. The union meeting house (now known as the Congregational church) was built in 1837, the Meth- odists owning one-fourth of it and occupving it one- fourth of the time. In 1858 the Methodists decided to haxe preaching in the village half of the time; and to this end the}' hired the town hall for meetings one- Iburth of the time. In 1859 they built their present house of worship. The church building has been greatly improved by putting in steel ceilings and sev- eral memorial windows. Several preachers and preach- ers' wives ha\e gone out from this church and are doing a grand work in the Master's \ine\ard. The church now numbers 63 resident members with a goodl\' number on probation. The Sunda\' School has an a\erage attendence ot nearly tilt}" and is in a very prosperous condition. Later the organization was merged into a church at South Solon. From 181 1 till 1819 this society joined with the one at the Upper Settlement as Bingham was then known. Durrell, William Lowell, Jonathan Lowell, Frank Rowell, P21ijah Gro\er and Joshua Gray together with the present ones make up the greater number of Solon's merchants. Manufacturing Account. The manul'acturing history of the town of Solon begins at an early date. It seems that early owmers of this territory in the north half ol the towm were desirous of establishing settlers upon the difl'erent lots and found that it was necessary to have providetl mills tor the manufacture of lumber and the grinding of grain, in order to induce settlers to locate. At a meeting of the proprietors of the north halt on March HISTORICAL 23 6, 1793, there was voted to one Joseph Jones, Jr., six lots of land, "On condition that he the said Joseph Jones, Jr., doth give a bond of reasonable sum with two good bondsmen that he will build and complete a saw mill and a grist mill and settle four settlers on the said half township within three years from the last day of Januar}-, 1793, he being the highest bidder." So far as we have been able to learn, Mr. Jones was un- able to lullfil his contract. Undoubtedl}' in about 1793-4 Calvin Pierce built the first mills about fifteen rods above the point where the present dam is located on Fall Brook. The first dam was remodeled in about twelve years from the time it was built, it was re- moved and the dam which occupied the site of the present one was built. Several freshets have destro3'ed the dams built at dilferent times at this point. Moses Campbell built a saw mill near the present bridge at at the village, and operated it some eight or ten 3'ears. William Hobby and David White sometime in the fifties bought the partially destroyed mill ot Elijah Grover and removed it to the village on Fall brook at a point a short distance below the present grist mill. This mill was destroyed by a freshet. Elijah Grover is credited with first developing the power at Carratunk falls. About 1833 he bought the land on the east side at the tails of Jesse Pierce, and two years later he bought of Joseph Spaulding Jr., the land on the west side. The next year a count}' road was laid out to the end ol the completed bridge at the 24 HISTORICAL falls. Within a \car or two after, Mr. Grovcr built a saw mill on the west side of the lalls, and a grist mill on the east side. He also built the bridge above men- tioned about the same time. About 1S46 the bridge and grist mill at this point were j^raetieall}- destroj-ed by a treshet. The saw mill was sold to Stillman Stone who was killed in a fall from the iVame while taking down the mill. This power remained practically idle till December iScSy, when the privelege was bonded by Staunton Day and David T. Mills. The deal was closed in July following, whereby the ]")r()pertv was trans- lerred. In i8(S9 the jndp mill was undei process of construction. It was opened in 1(891. Se\en years later Da}- and Mills failed, and the bondholders took possession and in February- 1898 the property was con- ve3'ed to the Moosehead Co. On the first day of April ot this year Hon. Turner Buswell as superintendent, started the mill. The International Paper Co. assumed ownership of the mill in 1899. Mr. Buswell continued to superintend the mill till July 1900. Eluglhamfii Tow^n Register Early Settlement The name of the hrst white man to set foot on the soil of Bingham is unknown. Its situation on the east bank of the river, the line of travel from the lower settlements to Canada leads to the belief that the French missionaries must have been the first to come to this section. Father Druillette came here not far from 1650, and Father Rasle about 1695. From that time on, the story is a blank till the coming of the whites as clai- ments of the lands. William Fletcher was the hrst white settler. He came here from Norridgewock in 1784 and settled on Preble street where Alton B. Carl now resides. Mrs. . A. P. Murra}', Albert Webster and Eugene Webster are among his descendants. Ephriam Wood, also trom Norridgewock came soon after Mr. Fletcher and settled where T. F. Houghton now resides, on the east side of the river a mile below 66 HISTORICAL the village. ^Nlr. Wood married a daughter ofjoshua Goodrich 2d, whom we shall next mention. They had eight children Luc}', L}(lia, Ascenath, Louise, Mary, Martha, Sarah, Samuel. Joshua Goodrich 2d came to Canaan tirst in his venture into Northern Maine. He remained there some two or three years and came to Hingham. His starting point was Watertown, Mass. He settled on the place now owned by Henry Wash- burn below the cemetery where he died at the age of 69 from a broken heart. His affliction was the death of his grandson, Joshua (joodrich, age fourteen vears, from an accident in a mill owned b\' the old gentle- men. Mrs. Joshua Goodrich 2d was one of the prime movers in the organization of the Methodist church at this place and also in the building of the Union church. Mr. Goodrich ga\e the land ior the cemetery below the village. Daniel Foster, one of the ver}- early comers, settled on the place now owned b}' Orrison Gordon. He died here leaving no children. Obed Wilson, one of the leading men of Bingham in its earlier \ears settled in what has been known as the Nelson neighborhood on the river road near the town line of Bingham and Solon. Fred Merrill, now^ living in town is a descendant iVom jNIr. Wilson. William Fletcher a relative of the William Fletcher before mentioned, built the oldest house now standing in Bingham \ illage, now owned bv Frank and Curren Smith. The lirst store was kept in this house. HISTORICAL 67 F. G. Williams and Mrs. E. W. Moore are numbered among his descendants. Edwin riawes was another early settler. The Bakers tirst settled in Moscow, and later came into Bingham. Among the tirst to settle in Mos- cow were Captain Nathan Baker, Chandler Baker and Snell Baker. Captain Nathan Baker when he carne into Bingham settled on a tarm now owned by John Owens, on a part of which the Somerset Railroad sta- tion now stands. He had children: Harlow, Samuel, George, Alvah, Alden, Edward, Ephriam, Emil}' and Julia.^ Snell Baker settled in Bingham as proprietor of the hotel which was on the site of what is now known as the Lander tenement house. He later owned the A. P. Murray farm. He had children : Edw^in wS., Alfred Wellington, Florence and Julia. Chandler Baker bought the hotel property with the brother befbre mentioned. He later bought the farm on which James O'Hara now lives. He left no children. This farm was first settled by Ephriam Heald who came from Peterboro, N. H. He built the house now owned by E. W. Moore, and occupied by Edwin Miller. The river road in the early years extended as far as Mr. Heald's place, then to the place occupied by the last Block Factor}-, then to a point near Herbert Pierce's blacksmith shop. Eber Baker, the oldest person in town, was ninetv one years old the first of No\ember. He was 68 HISTORICAL born in Moscow. lie came to Bin^luini in 185 i. Emily Ilobart of Solon was his wife. Their children were Sylvesta P., Sarah G., Helen M., Columbus S., and Atalanta L., All are li\ini;- in the village except Helen who died some years ago. T>evi Goodrich, son of Joshua 2d built the first hotel in town and afterwards sold to the Bakers. This same hotel rebuilt and remodeled is owned and occu- pied by Henry Washburn. Joshua Goodridge 3d settled on the farm now owned bv Granville Goodrich. This place has been in the hands of the Goodrich familv about one hundred 3-ears. Joshua Goodrich had ten children, Joshua, Jon- athan, Seth, Darius, Simon, Wyckliffe, SyKanus, Persis, Harriett and Saphronia. John Goodrich, another son of Joshua Goodrich 2d settled on the tarm now owned by John Kelley. He w^as the father of elcNcn children, Cyrus, Jothan, Cal- vin, Josiah, Willard, John, Orlando, Simeon, Lewis, and two daughters. A Levi Goodrich settled on the farm now owned b\- Sidnc}- T. Goodrich. This larni has remained in the hands of descendants of this family from this time. He had children, Packard, Levi Jr., Joseph, Rebecca and P0II3. Benjamin Goodrich, a son of Joshua Goodrich 2d, settled at first on his lather's firm, but afterwards settled at The Forks where he ended his days. The\- had children, Henr\', Robinson, Frank, Augustine, HISTORICAL 69 Jonathan, and six girls. He was the lirst oi the Good- rich's to marry a Baker. Their families have inter- wo\en ver}' closely from that time. His wife was Malinda Baker. Abijah Goodrich another son ol Joshua 2d, lived in Bingham for a time on his father's farm but finally moved to Concord on the farm where Walter Garland now lives. He had children, Joshua, Marshall, Levi, C^^nthia and Mary. Lydia Goodrich, a daughter of Joshua Goodrich 2d, married Abel Pari in, a ver}- early settler, and a famous hunter. Polly another daughter, married Joseph Russell. For a time they lived on the place now occupied by Mrs. Martha Rogers. They later moved to Moscow. Their children were Frank, Eliza, Susan and Polly. Mr. Russell was one of Bingham's early settlers. Calvin Russell came here from Massachusetts, and settled on the farm now owned by Peter Mahoney in the central part oi the town. Four daughters of Mr. Russell now reside in Bingham village, viz., Mrs. Lu- cinda Baker, aged eighty-eight years, Mrs. Cordelia Burke, Mrs. Mary Burke and Miss Lydia Russell. HISTORICAL 75 Mercantile and Manufacturing .MERCANTILE Ephraini Ileald and Levi G. Fletcher are said to liave been the first traders in the town ol Bingham. The date is fixed about 1 815-^1 7. The tirst store was in the house next above Mark Savage's store. In 1825 the. store now occupied by W. B. Goodrich was built by Levi G. Fletclier and occupied by him until about 183s- About this time William Rowell was doing business in Frank HunnewelTs store as it is now known. W. Parlin traded where Lander's store now stands. Simon Goodrich bought out Levi Fletcher about 1835. lie continued here in business during the long period till 1878 when the business fell into the hands of W. B. Goodrich who has it today. William Rowell was succeeded by Joel Colby. Wel- lington Parlin wiis succeeded by Benjamin Smith 2d about i860. Nathan Norton was also a merchant. Roby Sands was in business here for some years. Calvin Colby, Dinsmore & Lander were in trade for a term of years. Colby & Preble after vacating the Post office building, erected the large new block op- posite. That tirm has since changed to Preble & Robinson and is doing a good business at the present time. In the store where the harness shop now is, there were at different times the following: Abigail Greenwood, Emily. Savage, Mark Savage, E. W. Moore, and George L. Baker, 76 HISTORICAL Other lirnis doin;^ business in Bingham at dillcrcnt times, so far as we ha\ e learned, were as follows: Sav- age & Houghton, Sa^■age lV: Clark, Mark Savage & Co. Abbey & Dinsmore built Union Hall Bloek. Some of the tirms that have done business in this bloek are the following: Baker & Bray, Cal\in Ilunnewell, A. B. Chase, Thompson & Miller, Thompson »S: Chase, Miller & Dinsmore, Dinsmore & Son, Mr. Bergonzi, A. Dins- more & Son, A. C. Dinsmore, and Arlie Dinsmore. John Cummings was also in business in the Good- rich store at one time. He continued less than one year, and was succeeded b}- W. B, Cioodrieh. A. S. Burke has been lor many years one of Bingham's sub- stantial business men. At the station A. S. Burke & Co. built and ran tor se^"eral 3-ears a iced store and grist mill. This property has since become the pro- perty of B. F. Parrott. Benjamin Smith abo^■e mentioned was succeeded by S. -V. & A. Dinsmore. Warren Colby and Wel- lington Baker built the store next to Donigan's. Horatio and L. C. Andrews succeeded Colby & Baker. The firm later became L. C. iVndrews. In the store wdiere the Post Office now is T. H. Preble & Co. traded lor a time. They were succeeded by Colb\- & Preble. T, H. Oilman was also in this store in business. 01 the present merchants we must sa}' in justice to them that they are progressive, and are making the most of their opportunity to build up the business side of Bingham. No account would be complete without HISTORICAL 77 the mention oi such men as J. J. Lander, E. W. Moore Mr. Buck, the genial druggist, A. T". Donigan, and others whose names ha\e appeared in this necessarily brief account. M ANU FACTU R I XG Bingham has not been able to make a specialty' of manutacturing like her sister town, Solon, she has however been favored to a certain extent in this line. Her manufacturies ha\e been nearl)- all, save the saw and grist mills — alwavs a necessity from the first per- manent settlement, through all time — confined to special lines. In this list mav be mentioned Baker's Calk business, the Last-Bl(K^k business, and the Peg Industry. The Last-Block business was started in Bingham by S. A. Dinsmore and J. J. Lander. The date was 1889. Two \ears later the Bingham Last-Block Co., was organized here comprising the Dinsmore & Lander Co., and the Fitz Bros. Co., of Durham, Maine. Six vears ago Messrs. Dinsmore & Lander sold out to the Fitz Bros. Co., who ran the business till last spring when the}' dismantled the mill and went out of the business at this place. The same industry is being carried on by Mark Savage and J. J. Lander under the firm name of Lander & Savage. The mills were built on the east bank of the Kennebec river just west from the village. The Peg mill was built here in 1898 by the McKay Shoe Co., of Boston, Mass., and gave promise of being 7 8 llISTORR'Al.. ;in important business, but was continued onh' one year, remaining;; closed since tliat time. The Baker Calk business was started in 1S72 by Anion liaker and his brother C\rus M. Baker, under the th-ni name ol" C M. and A. Baker. The calks ha\e become so well known in all regions where lum- berinii; is carried on to anv extent that no e.\planatii)n is needed. The Baker's made the square shanked calk so-called at first by the use ol hand hammers. The plant first used by the compan}' on Austin Stream about a half a mile abo\e Bingham ^illa^■e. Anion Baker in\ented a trip hammer lor the more rapid manufacture of calks thus increasing the amount ol the output a great deal. By various other inipro\e- ments and enlargements ol'tlie plant the output was increased iVom 7,000 in 1S72 to 7,000,000 in 1892. The patents were taken out in 1879. This same }ear a new fatcor}- was built two miles farther up the stream. Its total cost including boarding house, stable etc., was $15,000. The crew worked by the concern was about 30 men, operating the plant day and night. In 1882 C. M. Baker sold to A. Baker his interests in the concern. About this time Ephraim AVitham ol" Carratunk began the manufacture of the same kind ol' calks, infringing on the leaker patents. Not far from this time Mr. Baker took vS. A. Dinsmore and Cal\ in Colby into the concern as partners. Later Mr. Baker retired Irom the concern tor good reasons. Later the concern was merged into a trust including ti\e other HISTORICAL 79 concerns. The contest over the patent was waged tor some time but imsiiccessrully on the part ot Messrs. Dins more & Colby. The factory is not now in operation, the calks are now being made elsewhere. Mr. Baker invented most ol the machinery that was in use by the concern and it is considered by experts to be most practical and effective. Mr. Baker has produced manv inventions, and is now starting a business of making an improved calk which bids fair to make a business the equal of the old industry. A saw mill that is of recent date is located at Badger's Siding on the Somerset Railroad about halt wa}' between Solon and Bingham. It is now owned and operated b}' E. J. Russell. It docs a good business in lono; and short lumber and shingles. Church Account CONGREGATIONAL. The church history ot the town ol Bingham begins at an early date — in the year 1805 — when the Congre- gationalist society was organized. In this society there were three men and five women, viz., Joseph Bussell, Ephraim Wood, Josiah Ileald, Sarah Fletcher, Bridget Heald, Betse}' Bussell, AUis Whipple, and Lephe 8o HISTORICAL Wood. The society wjis formed under the leadership of tlie Rc\. jotham Sewall. Thirtv-two \ears later the first church in Bingham was built. The structure is the present Methodist church. The church was a Union church and the house was owned by people in Bingham, Concord and Moscow. It contained tifty- two pews, each owner olOne pew haxing the prixilege of lia\ing whom he chose preach one Sunda}' each year. The cost oi the building must have been not Tar from $4000. The church is located at the lower end of the village, near the Somerset Railwa\" station. The Congregationalists had no regular pastor for thirty-two years. Wright, 1900-2; and George H. Rich- mond who commenced his labors here in June, 1902. In 1895 the church erected a new building in the central portion of the village, at a cost of about $7,000. This building of beautiful structure stands an ornament to the village. Much credit is due Rev. Mr. Gregory- for his efficient service in securing the success of the project ot building the new home for the society. The present membership of the society is sixty- five. METHODISTS. The Methodist Societ}"'s histor}- at Bingham is largel}' included in the account of the church at Solon. These two societies were, until recently, under one pastor and the list found under the Solon Methodist Society will apply to this church in general till 1895. The Methodists were part owners in the Union church when built and have continued to occup}' it to the pre- sent day. Since the seperation in 1895, the pastors have been the following: Joseph Moulton, 1895-7; W. T. Chapman, 1897-8, supplied from Solon; G. II.
