These are as follows: American Church: — Motz Strasse at Nollendorf Platz; American and British Union service, 11.30. . English Church: — St. George's, in the Monbijou Palace Gardens; Sundays 9 and 11; other days 10 to 12. Christian Science: — First Church of Christ, Scientists; Sundays at Beethovensaal, Kothener Strasse 32, German Service 10, English Servdce 11.30; Wednesdays at Oberlichtsaal, Bernburger Strasse 22, English Service 5.30 p. m., German Service 7 and 8.30 p. m. DISTRICT MESSENGERS The Berlin Messenger Boy Company conducts a district messenger service, of which the head office is at Bayreuther Strasse 38, with branches through- out BerUn. All leading hotels have direct telephone connections with the offices. The charges are made on either a time or distance basis as follows: Time Basis (8 a. m. to 10 p. m.): boy on foot 60 pfen- nigs per hour; with bicycle 80 pfennigs; with tri- cycle 1 mark; each additional quarter of an hour 15, 20 and 25 pfennigs respectively. Distance Basis: per kilometer, 30 pfennigs; with answer, 50 pfennigs; per 2 kilometers, 50 pfennigs; waiting fee, 10 pfennigs each five minutes; fares extra. ELECTRIC ELEVATED AND UNDERGROUND RAILWAY Runs from Nordring to Wilhelmplatz (Charlotten- burg) with several spurs into the newer residential sections of the West. More centrally located stations in the City are: Friedrich Strasse, Kaiserhof, and Leipziger Platz; in the West, NoUendorf Platz, Wittenberg Platz, and Zoological Garden. Trains run at intervals of about 5 minutes. The fares are: Second-class, 15 to 40 pfennigs; Third-class, 10 to 30 pfennigs. A map of their routes will be found on the last page. GRATUITIES In the larger hotels about 5 M.each should be given to the chambermaid, valet and porter, but this may be reduced in smaller establishments. The lift boy also expects one or two marks. At the res- taurants, 10 per cent, of the bill is sufficient except in the more fashionable places. Porters at railway stations receive 20 pf. for luggage up to 55 lbs. and 10 pf. for each additional 55 lbs. Each route is numbered, and omnibuses bear signs indicating the main localities to which they run. Stopping places are shown by signs on the sidewalk giving the numbers of those omnibuses which stop there, and complete guides to the omnibus routes may be purchased from the conductors. Fares, 10 pf. and up. POST OFFICES RULES INCLUDING PARCEL POST . Berlin is divided into nine postal districts, and there are numerous post offices and branch offices throughout the city. The main offices are open from 7 a. m. (8 a. m. in winter) to 8 p. m., and the branch offices from 8 a. m. to 7 p. m. Post offices having a Pneumatic Tube (Rohr-Post) service are open till 10 P. M. and are distinguished by a red light. Through this service special delivery letters may be sent for 30 pf., post cards 25 pf., with answer 50 pf. The Parcel Post carries packages up to 5 kg. (about 11 lbs.) for 25 pf. up to 10 miles, further 50 pf.; above 5 kg., 5 to 50 pf. extra. SHOPS The principal Berlin shopping district lies in the City between Unter denLinden and Leipziger Strasse. Excellent shops are also to be found in Charlotten- burg along Tauentzien Strasse, Kurfiirstendamm and the neighborhood of the Zoological Gardens, and English is generally spoken in the larger estab- lishments. Trains run at intervals of 2 to 5 minutes, and fares are as follows : Second-class 15 pf. and 30 pf.; third-class 10 pf. and 20 pf. Suburban trains to Wannsee, Potsdam, Grunewald, Fiirstenwalde also run over the Stadt- bahn. Stations of the Statdtbahn are: Stralau-Rummels- burg, Warschauer Strasse, Schlesischer Bahnhof, Jannowitz Brucke, Alexander Platz, Boerse, Fried- rich Strasse, Lehrter Bahnhof, Bellevue, Tiergarten, Zoologischer Garten, Savigny Platz, Charlotten- burg, Westend. The Ringbahn traverses only the more remote sections of Berlin and is therefore of Httle value to the tourist. Wannseebahn, at Potsdamer Platz. Fast trains for Nikolasee, Wannsee and Potsdam. TAXIS Motor and horse taxis can be picked up on any main thoroughfare, but stations where a specified number can usually be found are distributed throughout the city and are indicated by signs on the sidewalk. Luggage above this weight may be taken on luggage cabs only. TELEGRAPH OFFICES AND TELEPHONE STATIONS Telegrams and cablegrams are received at all post offices. The following remain open all night and all day Sunday for the receipt and transmis- sion of telegrams: Haupttelegraphenamt, Oberwall Strasse; C. 2., Konig Strasse corner Heiligegeist Strasse; W. 9., Lmk Strasse 4-5; S. W. 11, Anhalter Station; N. W. 40., Lehrter Station. The Berlin telephone system is under the juris- diction of the postal authorities, and public stations (automat) are to be found in all post offices, hotels, restaurants, and cafes. THEATRES Theatres are rather scattered over the City. There are also a few in the West (Schoneberg and Charlottenburg).
