Rusk HE area included in the scenic region of tlie Catskills would be difficult to match in this country and possibly in the world, containing as it does so many beautiful and diversified views. The office of this )ook is to illustrate a few of the more prominent scenes in this locality, as it would be impossible in a work of this size, to give more than a faint idea of the hundreds of grand, imposing, restful glimpses of nature to be found here. Fragments of these were first brought to the notice of the public b>- our land.scape painters, who were the first to find and appreciate the beauties of this region. As early as 184S-49 such painters as Kensett, Durand, Casalier, Hatch, Richardson, Peele and others whose names tlic writer lias forgotten, came up the Kaaterskill Canyon, and transferred many of the wild and beautiful scenes to their canvases, which were exhibited to the public. Thus was started the stream of summer guests to these mountains, which has increased annually by thou.sands, until now it has become one of the largest and most popular summer resorts in this country'. Could these old painters revisit today the scenes of their earl>- laljors the\- would be a.stonished at the many changes which have been made since that time, and at the great throng of summer visitors met with everywhere. Yet the physical features of the country remain the .same — the same grand old forests, the same majestic never- changing rocks, the same verdure-covered, soul-resting curves of the mountain peaks, the same inspiration-filling views as far as the eye can reach — and the grand old Hudson all in the marvelous panorama below the dweller on the mountain top.
