The answer of this department, to the resolution of the House of Representatives, of May 29th, 1848, shows the number and places of birth of seamen enlisted during the war, and there is no reason to suppose that the same ratio would not apply to tliose engaged therein who entered previously. Much the largest part of the vessels in commission at the date of the declaration of war have been either in the Gulf or in the Pa- cific, for longer or shorter periods. The v»ho!e number of seamen composing the crews of the vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and on the Pacific coast, during the war, was seven thciusand. The terms of enlistments in the marine corps enable the depart- ment to communicate full information in regard to the mariiics employed on the Pacific and Gulf coasts during the war with Mexico. The annexed statements, marked A and B, exhibit the informa- tion called for by the resolution, so far as it is in the power of the department to furnish it. I have the honor to be, very respectfully. Your obedient servant, J. Y. MASON. Hon. Robert C. Winthrop, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Gil lyub D. Of D. ■ Ex. Doc. No. 24.
