JI'.W'IM »RT, the- county seat of Newport County, is delightfully located on the shore of Narragansett Bay at the southern end of the large island — called Roodt Kylandt (Red Island) by its original discoverers from mWQ New Amsterdam — hence the name later applied to the whole State. The first settlement in the State of [fcj) Rhode Island was made in 1636 by Roger Williams and other refugees expelled from Massachusetts for their religious convictions. At fust Newport was an independent settlement, but later, in 1644, it was united to the other colonies now included within the present limits of the State. During the Revolutionary War, Newport suffered from the depredations of the British, who burned nearly five hundred houses and held the town for two years. In 1700 Count Rochambeau made Newport his headquarters for the troops under his command. At one time it was earnestly believed that the site of Newporl was settled by the Northmen long before the discovery of America by Columbus. The 'Old Stone Mill" was pointed out as proof of their stay, but this relic is now generally assigned to the seventeenth century. The city was one of the capitals of Rhode Island until 1900. Tin- Newport of today is an important naval station, and is noted for its fine harbor. The location of this charming city, within easy reach by land or water from New York, Boston and other large centers, and its clear air and wonderfully equable climate, have made it a world-renowned watering-place. Here many American men of wealth and captains of industry have erected magnificent summer homes equal in every way to the best palaces of European potentates, where, free from the wearing i reat business and financial operations, they may enjoy the long summer days secure from the intrusion of the multitude.
