In shajje it is very like a whale, and so the whalers who years ago made Sag Harbor a busy village named the eastern projections of the Island the north fluke and the south fluke. A range of hills having a relief of from 100 to 200 feet gives topographic expression to each of the flukes; and continuing west- Bits of Centreport. ward, these ranges coalesce north of the centre of the island near the Suffolk-Nassau line, where they reach their maximum eleva- tion of 420 feet at High Hill. Westward a group of rolling hills, occasionally reaching a height of over 300 feet, and not separable into distinct lines, continues to the Narrows at Brooklyn. South of these hill ranges the land is comparatively level and slopes off gently to the sea or forms more or less elevated table-lands be- tween the two lines of hills. The northern shore is rugged and precipitous, with long, narrow bays, while the southern shore SUMMER RESORTS ON LONG ISLAND Northport Harbor. passes gradually from a gently sloping ])lain into lowlands inclos- ing broad, shallow bays, beyond which is Oak Island, Fire Island, and Great South Beaches which separate Great South Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. These beaches are reached by steamboats and sail-boats which gives those who desire to do so the pleasure of surf bathing and boating and fishing on the ocean, as well as the sports to be had on the ([uiet waters of the bay. The Island has about 400 miles of salt water shore front, about 300 being on the sound and on the several bays, and 100 on the ocean. Long Island is noted for its excellent roads, having over 1000 miles of macadam highways, and many well-kept earth roads, especially pleasant for driving with light A-ehicles. A rich diversity of bhiff and woodland along the Sound, broken by inlets and deep bays, recedes into beautiful meadows and fertile farming country. The topography is wholly different from that of either the central section or the South Shore, and offers the summer resident a diversified region, in which the attractions of both water The Sound Shore at Whitestone. and woodland are intermingled. On the shores of the many bays are charming sites for cottage homes, costly villas and great estates, and here one finds the best facilities for yachting, rowing, and fishing. Pleasure and trading vessels are always passing, and the many sail-boat races in sight of the shore add to the attractive view. The following towns are located on the North Side Division of the railroad, which extends to Whitestone and Port Washington— Woodside, Winfield, Elmhurst, Corona, Flushing, College Point, Whitestone, Broadway, Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Great Neck, Manhasset and Port Washington, modern villages, growing rapidly because of their accessibility for those employed in New York City and desiring rural homes close to the mart of com- merce. They are all near the water and are especially well situated SUMMER RESORTS ON LONG ISLAND for the enjoyment of aquatic sports, many of them commanding a fine view of the Sound. Equally well located on the Oyster Bay Branch Br^^c^ Resorts "^ *'^^ railroad are Roslyn, the home of the late William Cullen Bryant; Glen Head, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Nassau, Locust Valley, Mill Neck, Bapille and Oyster Bay. Glen Head and Glen Cove are also reached by steamboat from New York. All of these places are within easy access of the city and combine the attractive features of water, steep hills, dense forests, and drives as picturesque as can be found anywhere. To fully appreciate this region one must travel along the woodland roads, and from the hills and high bluffs view the bays, inlets and delightful vistas of blue waters. On each of the points which run out into Long Island Sound are large estates, notably those at Great Neck, Port Washington, Roslyn, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Nassau, Locust Valley and Oyster Bay. Hempstead Harbor at Glen Head and Sea Cliff. Oyster Bay enjoys a location which makes it a favorite spot for pleasure craft of all kinds. Here is the Club House and anchor- age of the Seawanhaka Yacht Club, a noted organization of Corin- thian yachtsmen, who make this place a centre for their sport. In fact, it may be said that the life on the North Shore centres about the water. At Oyster Bay is located Sagamore Hill, the home of President Roosevelt. Hunt- ington, east of Cold Spring, on Huntington Harbor, is an historic town as well as one of the most popular places on Long Island. A new hotel — Chateau des Beaux-Arts — is being constructed on the shore of Huntington Harbor, and will be ready for the reception of guests this summer. Greenlawn, the railroad station for Centre- port, and Northport are beyond Huntington, both unifjuely situated on a beautiful harbor, which adds to the attractiveness of this locality as a summer resort. Kings Park, Smithtown, St. James, Stony Brook, Setauket and Port Jefferson, a famous old ship- building town, are attractively situated for those seeking a place for the summer. 10 o Q. These places are favorite resorts for business men, who find their nearness to the city advantageous and their cool temperature in the summer particularly inviting. They are no longer mere summer settlements, but are occupied the entire year by people who find the cottage life in this vicinity very pleasant. Many of the residences in this section are pretentious, some of them even palatial. The situation of Long Beach with its broad ocean frontage gives it exceptional advantages, and, as it is now planned, it will be one of the most famous resorts on the Atlantic Coast. Among these are Springfield, Rosedale, Valley Stream, Lynbrook, the junction for East Rockaway and Long Beach; Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Merrick, Bellmore, Wan- tagh, Seaford, Copiague and Lindenhurst. Many of these towns have a large permanent population and abound in pleasant walks and drives near the water. Farther along the line of the railroad one sees where Brooklyn gets its water supply. Through several towns as far as Massa- pequa and Amit^wille, the reservoirs lie near the railroad. Freeport, Massapequa and Amityville on the Great South Bay are towns in which there are attractive permanent and summer homes. In each of these towns are good hotels — the Imperial Hotel and Crystal Lake House are located at Freeport, the Massapequa Hotel at Massapequa, and the Newpoint Hotel and The Inn at Amityville. This is an organization of wealthy New York men who have created a preserve on which there is excellent hunting and fishing. Situated on the ocean front, and conveniently reached from Babylon by steamer is Oak Island, an ideal location for a quiet 21 SUMMER RESORTS ON LONG ISLAND and delightful summer. Oak Island is owned by the Town of Babylon, and plots of ground are leased for terms of ten years for the annual rental of $3.00 for each plot — affording an excellent opportunity for a comfortable summer home for very little money. Oak Island has an excellent beach on the Atlantic Ocean, without any undertow, making it ideal for surf bathing — also good facilities for boating and fishing. There are over 100 cottages here; those not occupied by the owners rent from $75.00 to $300.00 for the summer. Farther east on the beach are Fire Island and Have- meyer Point, reached by steamer from Babylon — also Point o' Woods, reached by steamer from Bayshore, places which appeal to many people who desire to spend their summer by the sea away from the activity of city life. There are a number of attractive villages along a c ogrue ^j railroad beyond Blue Point, of which Pat- and Beyond . , "^ . ' , . . chogue IS the most miportant. This section is deservedly noted as a good place for persons suffer- ing with pulmonary troubles. Going farther on the Main Line of the railroad we come to Itiverhead, one of the largest towns on Long Island, at the head of Peconic River, which runs into Peconic Bay. It is the business centre of that at- tractive country and popular with many as a place of summer residence. From this point on to Greenport — a place favored with conditions ideal for a delightful summer resort — are several very interesting towns, located near the shores of Peconic Bay, and well known to summer visitors, namely: Jamesport, Laurel, Mattituck, Cutchogue, Peconic and Southold. At Jamesport are located the Miamogue House and Great Peconic Bay House — two good hotels. Near Flushing is situated the course of the Oakland Club, which had an almost national reputation as the home club for several years of the amateur champion of the United States. At Port Washington is located the Sands Point Golf Club. Hempstead has an excellent golf course, and nearly all the summer places, such as Cedarhurst, Far Rockaway, and Edgemere, support courses of more or less merit. There is also a golf course at Roslyn, Sea Cliff and Oyster Bay in this section. On the Wading River Branch there are courses at Svosset, Huntington, Smithtown and Belle Terre. To the summer resident interested in garden- ing and in the cultivation of flowers, vegetables and fruits, and chiefly of course to the farmer, florist and horticulturist, who devote themselves to these pursuits as a profession, the soil and the climate of Long Island, as well as its proximity to the greatest market in the world, offer special in- ducements. The Island is the flower and kitchen garden and the orchard of the metropolis. It is especially noted for its asparagus, celery, cauliflower, cab- bage and potatoes.
