To the members of the Veterans Organizations in Alabama: The undersigned, constituting a Joint Historical Com- mittee for the United Confederate Veterans, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the United Sons of Con- federate Veterans, earnestly urge your co-operation in its work. The efforts of the Committee are particularly directed to the encouragement of a more serious and general study, in the home and schools, of the history of the great contest between the Confederate States and the United States, the better preservation of all the lacts, events and incidents of its history, the correction of errors in relation thereto in pub- lished works, especially school books, and the stimulation, through a study of the war, of a broader and more intelligent patriotism. While every phase of the w.ork outlined is important, the Committee is at present especially desirous of obtaining in- formation as to what histories are in use in the various schools and colleges of the State. Appeal is theiefore made to thf Commanders of the various Camps of Veterans and Sons of Veterans, and to the Direc- tors of the various Chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in the State, to report to the Committee at once, the titles of all histories taught in the schools of their com- munities with such other information and suggestions as may be desirable. The Committee is engaged in reviewing such books as are already known to be in use, and when the re- ports called for have been received, errors will be pointed out and recommendations made.
