BINGHAMTON. 
 
 ITS MANY ATTRACTIONS, AND LEADING BUSINESS 
 ENTERPRISES. 
 
 The City of Binghamton, situated at the junction of the Sus- 
 quehanna and Chenango rivers, in Broome County, New York, 
 stands -among the first in the United States in beauty of location 
 and surroundings, healthfulness of climate, rapid increase in popu- 
 lation, development of business interest and enterprises. Situated 
 in the centre of a rich farming country, and just on the borders of 
 the iron, coal and oil regions of Pennsylvania, it is not surprising 
 that, within thirty years, it has grown from a sleepy, little inland_ 
 village, to a large railroad centre and busy commercial mart and 
 manufacturing city. 
 
 Men of enterprise and wealth have not been slow to recognize 
 its future prospects, and their energy and capital have left, and are 
 still rearing enduring monuments to honor the memory of their 
 efforts. Settled at first by people of culture, their influence and 
 example determined for the coming generations, the nature of its 
 institutions, in its churches, schools, public libraries, public build- 
 ings, and local legislation. We see the evidence of their wisdom 
 and foresight. No city of its population presents better facilities 
 for educational advantages than Binghamton: Seven large public 
 school buildings, with 'an efficient corps of teachers, under the 
 supervision of a well qualified and earnest Superintendent and 
 Board of Directors ; in addition to which, are several private insti- 
 tutions, first among which is the Binghamton Literary and Classical 
 Institute, under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Craig. In this 
 institution, pupils can obtain instruction in any of the branches 
 required for College, preparatory, or practical utility. All grades of 
 work, from Kindergarten to Classics and Higher Mathematics, are 
 taught by the most efficient teachers. • The city sustains seventeen 
 churches, and seeks the best talent of the day as spiritual instructors 
 in the several pulpits, Two large public libraries are well sustained, 
 and several lecture courses, in which the best talent, both in the 
 
fields of lectures and musicul entertainments, are secured every 
 year. Bingham ton is eminently a city of homes. Its people are 
 therefore interested in every movement conducive to its general 
 prosperity. Hence their encouragement to commerce and manu- 
 factures. Local government is thoroughly enforced, and cleanliness 
 and healthfulness observed within the limits. Among the leading

 the most a?sthetic sons and daughters of wealth.

 SOCIABILITY V/HILE TRAVELING. 
 
 "Speaking aOout the sociability of railroad trav^ellers," said the 
 man with the crutches, and a watch-pocket over his eye, '• I never 
 got so well acquainted with the passengers on a train as I did the 
 other day, on the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. We were 
 going at the rate of about thirty miles an liour, and another train 
 from the opposite direction telescoped us. We were all thrown into 
 each other's societ}^, and brought into immediate contact, — so to 
 speak. 
 
 T went over and sat in the lap of a, coipulent ladv fi'om Mani- 
 toba, and a girl from Chicago jumped over nine seats, and sat down 
 on the plug hat of a preacher from La Crosse, with so much timid, 
 girlish er:thusiasm, that it shoved his hat clear down over his 
 shoulders. 
 
 Everybody seemed to la}- aside the usual, cool reserve of 
 strangers, and we made ourselves entirely at home. 
 
 A shy young man, with an emaciated oil-cloth valise, left his 
 own seat, and went over and sat down in a lunch-basket where a 
 bridal couple seemed to be wrestling wnth their first picnic. Do vou 
 suppose that reticent young man would have done such a thing on 
 ordinary occasions? Do you think if he had been at a celebration 
 at home, that he would have risen impetuously and gone over 
 where those peo])le were eating by themselves, and sat down in the 
 cranberry jelly of a total- stranger ? I should rather think not. 
 
 Why, one old man, who probably at home led the class-meeting, 
 and who was as dignified as Eoscoe Conkling's father, was eating a 
 piece of custard pie wdicn we met the other train, and he left his 
 own seat and went over to the front end of the car, and stabbed that 
 piece of custard pie into the ear of a beautiful widow^ from Iowa. 
 
 People traveling, somehow forget the austerity of their home 
 lives, and form acquaintances that sometimes last through life." —

 In the spring of 1863, two great armies were encamped on 
 either side of the Rappahannock River, one dressed in blue, and 
 the other in grey. As twilight fell, the bands on the Union side 
 began to play " The Star Spangled Banner," and "Rally Round the 
 Flag," and that challenge of music was taken up on the other side, 
 and they responded with •' The Bonnie Blue Flag," and " Away 
 Down South in Dixie." It was borne in upon the soul of a single 
 soldier in one of those bands of music to begin a sweeter and more 
 tender air, and slowly as he played it they joined in a sort of chorus 
 of the instruments upon the Union side, until finally a mighty cho- 
 rus swelled up and down our army — " Home, Sweet Home." When 
 they had finished, there was no challenge yonder, for every band 
 upon that further shore had taken up the lovely air, so attuned to 
 all that is holiest and dearest, and one great chorus of the two great 
 hosts went up to God ; and when they had finished, from the boys 
 in grey came a challenge, " Three cheers for home !" and as they 
 went resounding through the skies from both sides of the river, 
 something on soldiers' cheeks washed off" the stains of powder. —

 A CALIFORNIA SCHOOLMASTER. 
 
 HOW THE SLIM TEACHER MANAGED A SCHOOL AT CRANBERRY GULCH. 
 
 " Mister, no doubt )^ou have all the learniu' that's required in 
 a school teacher, but it wants more than learnin' to make a man 
 able to teach school in Cranberr}^ Gulch. You'll soon find that out 
 if you try. We've had three who tried it on. One lies there in 
 the graveyard ; another lost his eye ; the last one opened school, 
 and left before noontime — for the benefit of his health. He hasn't 
 been back since. Now you're a slender build, and all your learnin' 
 will only make it worse, for all our voung folks are roughs, and 
 don't stand no nonsense." 
 
 This was what one of the trustees of the district said to my 
 friend H;irry Flotee, when he applied for the vacnnt post of teacher. 
 
 "Let me try. I know I am slender, but I am tough and have 
 a strong will," said Harry. 
 
 " Jest as you like. There's the school-house, and I'll have the 
 notice given if you want it done," said the trustee. 
 
 "I do," said Harry; "and I'll open next Monday, at 9 A. M. !" 
 
 The notice was given, and there was a good deal of excitement 
 in the gulch and along the Yuba flats. More than fifty young 
 people of both sexes made an excuse to drop into the tavern to get 
 a sight at the fellow who thought he could keep school in that dis- 
 trict, and many a contemptuous glance fell on the slender form of 
 the would-be teacher. 
 
 Eight o'clock on Monday morning came, and Harry Flotee 
 went down to the school-house, with a key in one hand and a valise 
 in the other. 
 
 " Eeady to slope, if he finds we're too much for him !" said a 
 cross-eyed, broad-shouldered fellow of eighteen. 
 
 The school-house was unlocked, and the new teacher went to 
 his desk. Some of the folks went to see what he was going to do, 
 though the school was not called. 
 
 Harry opened his valise and took out a large belt. Then, after 
 buckling it around his waist, he put three Colt's navy revolvers 
 there (each six barrels), and a bowie-kniie eighteen inches in the 
 blade. 
 
 " Thunder !" he means business !" muttered the cross-eyed 
 chap. 
 
 The new teacher now took out a sc^uare card, about four inches 
 each way, walked to the other end of the school-house, and tacked 
 it up against the wall. Returning to his desk he drew a revolver 
 Irom his belt, and quick as thought, sent ball after ball into the 
 card, till there were six balls in a spot not much larger than a 
 dollar ! 
 
 By this time the school-house was half full of large boys and 
 girls. The little ones were afraid to come in. 
 
 Then the teacher walked half way down the room with a bowie

 in liis hand, and threw it with so true a hand tliat it stuck, quiver- 
 ing, in the centre of the card. 
 
 He left it there, and quietly put two more of the same kind in 
 his belt, and reloaded his yet smoking pistol. 
 
 " King the bell ; I am about to open school." 
 
 He spoke to the cross-eyed boy, the bully of the crowd, and 
 the boy rang the bell. 
 
 " The. scholars will take their seats ; I open scliool with a 
 prayer," he said sternly, live minutes later. 
 
 The scholars sat down silently, almost breathless. After the 
 prayer, the teacher cocked a revolver and walked down on the 
 floor. 
 
 " We will arrange the classes," he said. "All who can read, 
 write and spell will rise. Of them we will form the first class." 
 
 Only six got up. He escorted them to upper seats, and then 
 he began to examine the rest. A whisper was heard behind him. 
 In a second he wheeled, revolver in liand — 
 
 "No whispering allowed here!" he thundered, and for an in- 
 stant his revolver lay on a level with the cross-eyed boy's head. 
 
 "I'll not do so any more," gasped the bully. 
 
 "See that you do not. I never give a second warning," said 
 the teacher, and the revolver fell. 
 
 It took two hours to organize the classes, but when done, they 
 were well organized. 
 
 Then came recess. Tlie teacher went out, too, for the room 
 was crowded and hot. A hawk was circling overhead, high in the 
 air. The teacher drew his revolver, and the next second the hawk 
 came tumbling down amongst the wondering scholars. 
 
 From that day on, Harry kept school for two years in Cran- 
 berry Gulch ; his salary was doubled after the first quarter, and his 
 pupils learned to love as well as respect him, and the revolvers 
 were out of sight within a montli. 
 
 They had found a man at last who could keep school. This
