THIS grand and beautiful wonder of Nature's work- manship, known by the name of Ausable Chasm, is the channel of the River Ausable in its rapid fall and flow onward to empty into Lake Champlain, forming a narrow ravine or canyon, having lofty sides of rock, in some cases nearly 200 feet in height, with mountain precipices of varied form towering above its dark waters, the top and sides of which are fringed with cedars, whose sombre shadows add to the mysterious and awe-inspiring grandeur. Lateral fissures or gorges, project from the main chasm, some wild and rugged, in whose rocky caves the sun never shines ; others, bright and beautiful, and softly clothed in moss and fern and endless flowers. The length of the Chasm is nearly two miles. In some places the river is over fifty feet wide, in others it is compressed to only ten, and is of great depth and still ; in some it leaps against the giant rocks, dashing and whirling through its tortuous and confined pathway, with many beautiful rapids and cascades, giving a life to the scene in the musical rush of its waters. There are perfectly safe walks, stairways and bridges constructed along its entire course, from which visitors can see all points of interest without discomfort or fatigue. A portion of the trip through the Chasm can be made by boat, which, while a perfectly safe, is also an inter- esting and novel incident of the visit. lAKE VIEW HOUSE.
