It has been our endeavor in preparing the American Summer Resort Directory, to meet the requirements of all classes who may have occasion to consult its pages. And if it does to any considera- ble extent fulfill this object, its mission will have been accomplished. Those who are limited as to time may find Sea Shore and Mountain Resorts brought within their reach, while those who have ample lime and means will have the widest scope to select from. The places are confined to no particular section, but combine attractions from all parts of the country. The routes are arranged on several of the leading lines according to distance from New York City, to afford the most simple method for the conveniences of those con- sulting them. To enable us to produce this work at a popular price, we have carefully excluded all surperfluous and unimportant matter, and adopted a rigid condensation of style, though no effort has been spared to make it as reliable as possible ; but in handling so many places some errors are liable to occur, and we would feel grateful to our readers for anj' corrections tliey may suggest. E— • P3=:3 E-H C^cq -:5^ C/2 Before Mr. Sniffkins, the Broker, entered the Park, he thought the best bargain he ever made was the purchase of his handsome mare. When he left the Park he was of a different opinion. He said the contract he made with the United States Mutual Acci- dent Association to pay him $50 per week indemnity in case of being disabled and $10,000 in case of death by accident, at a cost of about |20 per annum, was, under existing circumstances, by all odds the better bargain. The policeman's report that he believed the mare could travel a mile in less than a minute causes Mr. Sniffkins no satisfaction. The Doctor thinks that with careful nursing his patient will be out in ten or twelve weeks. Much has been said and written about Long Island, and in preparing our directory for this season, we have relied almost entirely on authority of this character for descrip- tions of localities, surroundings and real attractions, and considering that it has all emanated from or in the interest of the Long Island Railroad management, we promise our readers that another year we shall give them a most thor- ough and truthful description of the Island, and everything pertaining to it, not forgetting the Long Island Railway, its management, its equipment, and its service. We shall give in detail the exact distance of each station from the water where it is claimed boating, bathing, and fishing may be enjoyed. We will describe its shores and its approach, its facilities for bathing, the character of the water bed, the probabilities of catching fish, the facilities for boating, etc. We shall deal truthfully in the matter and speak of things as we find them. We shall unhesitatingly expose all malarious sections, and those addicted to insect pests. We shall give our readers the exact time from the City Hall, in New York, to each of the towns on the Island. We shall describe the drives, Avhere there are any, and their character and the facilities for procuring conveyances. With this statement, we shall now proceed to give a list of parties on the Island who take summer boarders. MONTAUK or SOUTHERN DIVISION. Comparatively few of the people in New York city, an- nually seeking summer rest or recreation, have any proper idea of the charming views at nearly every point along the entire line of this great quadruple track of iron, from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Erie. There is a grandeur of scenery throughout all this broad region ©f craggy rocks and lofty hills, with shady glens and beautiful streams in valleys of green — surpassed only by the sublime efforts of nature manifested in the Rocky Mountains. Here the atmosphere is always pure — the water untainted, and in- sective pests unknown. Indeed the entire line of the Erie Railway is a grand field of charming study, and a greater part of the entire section is famous for its hunting and fishing. The lover of trout, bass fishing, and pickerel fishing, will find ample field for the gratification of his passion among the creeks, lakes, and rivers, while the latter season opens unrivaled haunts for the hunter, with his fowling piece or rifle, his setter or deer hound.
