Desert Isle Summer Level of Lakes GREETING Northeast Harbor Yesterday In 1880 Northeast Harbor was a scat- tered community of farming and fishing folk, hving in small houses along the shore. There were no houses at all where the "village" now clusters. Leading up the sound, the rough road ended at the Corson farm near the present golf club. The unpainted schoolhouse stood to the north of where the Schoolhouse Ledge road joins the town road. There was no church. Mr. Corson drove the mail down from Somesville twice a week. The nearest steamboat connection and tele- graph office were at Southwest Harbor "The little hamlet," writes Bishop Doane, "was reached only by rowing or sailing from Southwest Harbor." In 1880 President Elliot bought the hundred acre lot which includes the ridge of Asticon Hill and built the house which they still occupy. In the same year 3Ir. J. H. Curtis of Boston, bought the farm on the eastern bank of the harbor with the western slope of Asticou, and built a lodge on the hillside. It was also in the summer of 1880 that Bishop Doane of Al- bany came to l>oard at Squire Kimball's. "After spending August," he writes, "I was so caj)tivated witli the place that I bought a small bit of land. I remember a remark made in those days by one of the first visitors from the outside who came here, Dr. Gilman, then President of Johns Hopkins University, there were three things of which he always thought — the air that he breathed, the views that he looked at, and the people that he met, and he added in his gracious way, 'which- ever way I put them they make an as- cending climax," — Extract from History of Mount Desert by George E. Street. Northeast Harbor Today Nestled among the highest hills on the Atlantic Coast of the United States with their valleys being low cut between the hills. Northeast Harbor today has an approximate valuation of eight hundred thousand dollars, a resident population of five hundred, a summer population of two thousand, three churches, a public library, good schools, a kindergarten, neighborhood house, village improvement society, and several secret orders. It also has an excellent Avater supply, sewer system, electric lights, telephone and telegraph service, a golf ground wath club house, tennis courts with club house, a swimming pool, and a fire department. In the language of Ex-President Eliot of Harvard University: ''The sum- mer resort to Mount Desert is chiefly due to four things, the cool equable climate, the beautiful conformation of the island itself, the availability for sailing and fish- ing of the waters which surround it, and the roughness and wiidness of its hills and shores." The ages that children are admitted to the Kindergarten are from three to seven and the tuition is the small sum of twenty. five cents per week. But no'child need remain away whose parents feel they cannot afiord to pay the tuition, as application blanks are sent out each year affording the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. At present the Kindergarten year is from May until Christmas, subject to va- cation. To defray the expenses of the Kinder- garten beside that paid for tuition and, for several years one hundred and fifty dollars appropriated by the town of Mt. Desert, the money has been raised by en- tertainments and an annual summer fair and a few private subscriptions. In 1910 it was voted to discontinue the summer sales and raise the money by sub- scription. This proved very successful. The Kindergarten has a room in the Neighborhood House, and at present is under the management of Miss Laura Tracy as Kindergartner, and Miss Mary Gilpatrick as her assistant, who would be very grateful for visits from the members of the summer colony, as well as from the all year residents of Northeast Harbor. 35 Jerome H* Knowles ATTORNEY- AT-LAW Notary Public Real Estate Cottages for Rent Building Sites for Sale INSURANCE OF ALL KINDS ROYAL INSURANCE CO. MCm 37 New Fire Alarm July 1st saw the new fire alarm system in operation at Northeast Harbor, The town at the annual meeting voted $1,000 to install a compressed air fire alarm whistle, and the contract was a- warded to Mr. R. W. LeBaron of Arling- ton. Mass., and In connection with this whistle, the Board of trade are to have what is known as the telephone fire alarm system. This system is very simple and cards will be issued to every householder explaining it, but to give the public an idea how to pull in an alarm. Look at your card and find in what dis- trict you are, then telephone "Central" say "Fire" and your number, the opera- tor then pulls in the alarm. To made this system a success telephone users will have to co-operate, and the Board of trade asks all subscribers that when a fire is given over their line to give it the right of way, and the Telephone Company will at once connect you with your party again, 38 Hamor & Stanley Plumbing and Heating Bath Room Specialties Garden Hose, Lawn Sprinklers, Hose Nozzles and Reels.
