OF BOSTON. Life Member o/ the New England Historic Genealogical Society. President of the Hills Family Association. BOSTON: PRESS OF DAVID CLAPP & SON. 1910 <1-o\qa^\ ihL iu l^ll THREE ANCIENT CEMETERIES. In Grafton county, New Hampshire, in the town of Enfield, near the boundary line that separates that township from that of Leba- non, bes one of the great ponds of the state. It is a beautiful sheet of water about tive miles in length, covering 1600 acres of a valley walled in by hills with mountains of moderate height a part of its horizon line. Near its inlet from smaller ponds on a higher level, its banks are dotted with summer cottages ; on its southern bank is the large farm belonging to the fraternity of Shakers, which once so numerous that at this station three " families " occupied different portions of it, where now a little band of " sisters " with one or two " brothers " and a group of children gathered from " the world's peo- ple," inhabit the great stone structure which when it was built " cost more than any building in the state except the capitol at Concord." This sliect of water is locally known as Lake Moscoma. Its outlet is a stream of an average width of five or six rods, which, falling some foiu' or five hundred feet in its westerly descent to the Connec- ticut, is called the Moscoma river. Settlement of this region began about the middle of the 18th century. Those who cleared its farms were mainly from Connecticut ; they came up the river to their new homes and gave to New Hampshire a cluster of familiar town names transfered from the comnumities they had left. On the fertile land near where the Moscoma joins the Connecticut river the early set- tlers of Lebanon built then- log cal)ins and in July, 17G1, obtained a charter for their town. On a hill a half mile east of the Connec- ticut, and a few hundred feet north of the Moscoma, the first burial ground of the new town was established. It takes its name " The Old Pine Cemetery " from a noble tree, whose roots grasping the footstone at the grave of one of the earliest settlers, have thrown it from its upright position and partially lifted it from its place. In the latter part of August of the current year, the compiler with members of his family visited this old burial place and copied from its monuments and headstones the information genealogically valuable that they still hold. He believes that the inscriptions were carefully taken, as the youngest of the copyists was nineteen years old and he thinks that none were omitted as the junior of the group marked each stone as the copy of its record was finished. Witli such infor- mation as he found in the library of the New England Historic Gen- ealogical Society as to the families of those who there sleep their last sleep, he enters them and those of two less ancient cemeteries, in alphabetical order in the following pages. In memory of Daniel Alden Esquire, who died May 18"' 1790 in the 71^* year of his age. In memory of Mrs. Jane Alden, Eelict of the late Dauiel Alden Esq., who died May G*^ 1817 in her 93*^' year. The " Memorial of the descendants of the Hon. John Alden, by Ebeuezer Alden M.D.,of Randolph [Norfolk Co.] Mass. [1788-1881] is tlie authority for the genealogical line here given. Dr. Alden in his work acknowledges the valuable assistance he received from his " Aunt Jane " of Lebanon. John Alden joined the Mayflower when she touched at one of the ports of the south coast of England, while on her voyage from Holland to New England. Among liis fellow passengers on the famous ship were William Molines or Mullins, who with his wife died at Plymouth in Feb. 1G21, and their daughter Priscilla. " Tradition rejjresents Priscilla to have been very beautiful in her youth, and John also was a comely person, and * * * it is not surprising that when he was sent by Capt. Standish, after the death of his wife, to solicit her hand in marriage, she preferred the messenger to the message." Longfellow tells the story in his " Court- ship of Myles Standish : " " Archly the maiden smiled, and, witli eyes overrunning Avitli laughter, Said, in a tremulous voice, ' Why don't you speak for yourself, John? '" The farm in Duxbury (near Plj^mouth) on which they resided is still in possession of their descendants, " having never been alienated." John Al- den was born , 1599: died Duxbury Sept. 12, 1687: married about 1621, Priscilla Molines. Eleven children were born, of whom eight survived their parents. Their second son Joseph^ Alden was a farmer of Bridgewater [Plymouth Co.] Mass., born 1624; died Feb. 8, 1697. He received his farm in what is now known as West Bridgewater from his father, who was one of the grantees of the town. He married Mary, daughter of Moses Simmons junior. His son, Deacon Joseph' Alden, born 1667, a farmer of Bridgewater, lived in what is now South Bridgewater; died Dec. 22, 1747 ; married 1690, Hannah, daughter of Daniel Dunham of Plymoutli, Mass. They liad ten children, seven sons ; the eldest child was DanieP Alden, born Bridgewater, Mass., Jan. 29, 1691; died StafPord [Tolland Co.] Conn., May 3, 1767. He was a magistrate. He married 1717, Abigail, daughter of Joseph Shaw. She was sister of the Rev. John Shaw who was grandfather of Hon. Lenmel Shaw, who was for many years Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. They had eleven children, five sons ; the second son, second child, was Deacon DanieP Alden, of Stafford, Conn., Cornish iuid Lebanon, N. H. A farmer, born Bridgewater, Mass., Sept. 5, 1720: d. Lebanon [Grafton Co.], N. H., May 18, 1790. He first settled in Bridgewater, whence he soon removed to Stafford ; was a deacon in the church, a magistrate, much engaged in pultlic business, often in the legislatvire and universally respected. About 1782, he sold his farm in Conn, and removed to Cornish [Sullivan Co.], N. H., where he resided eight years, when becoming infirm, he went to live with his eldest son at Lebanon. He married 1747, Jane, daiigliter of Seth Tnrner of Weymouth [Norfolk Co.], Mass., a descendant of Humphrey Turnfer of Scituate, Mass. She was born March 30, 1725, died Lebanon May 6, 1817. Mr. Samuel Bailey, died June 2, 1798, aged 75 years. In memory of Mr. John Baldwin, wlio died Dec. 7, 1777, in his 72'' year. Mr. Baldwin and 13 of his family died in 3 years. In memory of Mrs. Lucy, wife of Mr. John Baldwin, who died Jan. 2, 1777 in her 62*^^ year. It is probably one of this large family that lies in close proximity to those whose records are the last given. Only this could be read on the headstone : Mr. John died Sept. 29, 1776 aged 41. George Edward Barrows — 1853 — 1872. [See Gould.] An ancient headstone, part of which was illegible, yielded this record : Mary wife of Bliss died Jan. 28, 1793 in 79*"^ y« The headstone of the next grave could not be deciphered, but the foot- stone showed the name Azariah Bliss. — The Bliss genealogy supplies the record that time has effaced and gives a line of four generations of progenitors of the name. " Jonathan Bliss, son of Thomas of Belstone, England, was born in that village about the year 1575 or 1580. He died 1735-6. It is not known who he married or when, but he had several children born to him." Thomas^ Bliss of Belstone parish, Devonshire, England, of Braintree [Norfolk Co.], Mass., and of Hartfonl, Conn., was a brother of this Jona- than and a son of the above-named Thomas. He was born about the year 1580 or 1585. He married in England about 1612-1G15 Margaret and had ten children, of whom six were born before the family came to New England * * * in the autumn of 1635. He died Hartford, Conn.- — 1640. His youngest child was John'- Bliss of Longmeadow [Hampden Co.], Mass., born Hartford, about 1640 : died Longmeadow Sept. 10, 1702. Married Springfield, Mass., Oct. 7, 1767, Patience, daughter of Henry Burt. Seven children, the eld- est was John* Bliss of Enfield [Hartford Co.], and Lebanon [New Loudon Co.], Conn.; born Sept. 7, 1669; married Jan. 11, 1693, Anna, daughter of Samuel Terry of Springfield, Mass. His second wife was named llannah . Seven children, four sons ; the youngest child was Azariah* Bliss of Lebanon, Conn., and Lebanon [Grafton Co.], N. H. Born Lebanon, Conn., April 7, 1714: died Lebanon, N. H., — 1793: married April 29, 1736, Mary Tilden. The Porter genealogy gives her pedigree. Nathaniel^ Tilden born Tenterden, Kent Co., England, came to New England with his wife Lydia Bourne in 1 635 and settled in Scituate [Plymouth Co.], Mass. Their son Stephen^ Tilden, born 1637, married Jan. 15, 1662 Hannah, daughter of Thomas Little, who, April 19, 1633, married Anne, daughter of Richard Warren, who came to Plymouth in the Mayflower in 1620. Their son Steijlien** Tilden, born 1664, married , and had daughter " Mary Tilden, who married Azariah Bliss." Anne (Warren) Little, with her mother and four sisters came to Plymouth in the ship Ann in 1623. 6 In memory of Mrs. Sarah, wife of David Bliss who died Dec. 13, 1774, in her 34'*^ year. In memory of Mrs. Lucy y« 2'' wife of Mr. David Bliss who died April 16, 1778 in her [age illegihlc]. Diivid^ Bliss was the eldest of the nine children. Of his wife Lucy, the compiler has found no record. He was born Lebanon Feb. 21, 1737. He was a farmer in the Lebanon of Conn, and of N. H. After the death of his second wife he removed to Hartford [Windsor Co.], Vt., where he probal)ly died. He married May 10, 1761, vSarah, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Skinner) Porter. The genealogy of that name shows that the pa- rents of this daughter were married in 1736 and had nine children, Sarah (Porter) Bliss being the second child, born June 28, 1740, of the fifth gen- eration from the English emigrant John Porter, who was of Dorchester (since 1870 a part of the city of Boston), Mass., in 1630, and who, in Oc- tober 1635 I'emoved to Connecticut and died in Windsor in that province April 22, 1648. " She was the mother of five, perhaps six children ; " the three elder ones were Phebe, b. — , 1762, married, March 28, 1787, Nathan Durkee of Leb- anon, N. H. Sarah, b. — , 1763, married, Dec. 2, 1784, Andrew Tracy of Hartford, Vt. Mary, b. — , 1765, married, Apr. 1, 1784, David Blodgett of Chelsea, Vt, Azariah Bliss, died Sept. 28, 1814, in 76"' year his age. Clearly a younger brother of David and a son of Azariah and Mary (Tilden) Bliss. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary war from Lebanon. In memory of Bosworth, died 1784 (stone in part illegil)le). Louisa, daughter of W. W. and J. M. Gulver(?) died Oct. 20, 1874, JE 9 mos. 20 days. Deacon Joseph Dana. The face of this stone was illegible, but its re- verse gave the name. To the memory of Capt. William Dana who deceased Dec. 11, 1805, in the 70*'' year of his age. He was one of the fii'st planters in town, was respected in life and at death much lamented by his acquaintances and friends. Johanna died Feb. 7, 1782, 18 ours old (stone chipped, in part illeg- ible). In memory of Abigail, dau. of Mr. William and Mrs. Hannah Dana who died March 15, 1808, in the 2'^ year of her age. In memory of Dyer, son of Jedediah and Martha Dana, died May 21, 1834. (Part of the inscription below the surface of the ground.) In memory of Samuel W., son of Jedediah and Martha Dana, deceased Aug. 15, 1825, aged 6 years. The compiler was unable to find in the library of the New England His- toric Genealogical Society any work that related to this group of Danas. The unusual name of Dyer which will again occur in these pages as a first or " given " name in connection with the surname of Hyde, suggests a rela- tionship with that family. In memory of Mr. Elijah Dewey Ju^ Died Dec. 16, 1792, in his 40'"^ year. In memory of Deacon Nchemlah Estabrook, who died Feb. 10, 1787, in the 72^^ year of his age. In memory of Harry Goold, son of Mr. EUjah and Mrs. Irene Goold, Deceas'' Mar. 14, 1807, in the 2'' year of his age. The Gould Genealogy, published 1895, gives his pedigree. Zaccheus^ Gould, born 1589, resided at Ilemel Hampstead and Great Missenden, Hertfordshire, England, came to New Eno'land about 1638; probably lived for a short time at Weymouth [Norfolk Co.], Mass., and then at Lynn ; but established himself at Ipswich (Topstield), where he died in 1668. [Topsfield, once a part of Ipswich, and Lynn are in Essex Co., Mass.] By wife Phebe, who died Sept. 20, 1663, he had five children, one son : John,- born June — , 1635, married Sarah Baker and had eight children, five sons. The Halls of New England, published 1873, give the line of this family to John Hall who came from Coventry, Warwickshire, England, to Charles- town [since 1874 a part of Boston], Mass., in 1630. Probably in the fleet with Gov. Winthrop. The PZnglish town is about 95 miles northwest of London. He was one of the oi-iginal members of the first Church of Charlestown which became by removal the first Church of Boston. Those who remained where the settlement was commenced Nov. 2, 1632, organ- ized another church ; among them were John Hall and his wife Bethia. He was of Barnstable about 1640, and of that part Yarmouth that was set oif as the town of Dennis as early as 1653. These towns are on "Cape Cod" and in Barnstable Co., Mass. He died July 23, 1696, and was buried on his farm. He is said to have had 12 children — 10 sons are of record. The genealogy (page 212) has the following : " Arunah Hall of Lebanon, N. H., in 1865 when he was 85 years old, said that he often heard his father say that his emigrant ancestor had 12 eons and no daughters." William^ Hall, born Yarmouth, liaptized June 8, 1651 ; died Mansfield [Tolland Co ], Conn., June 11, 1727. He was taxed in Yarmouth in 1676, removed to Norwich, Conn., and afterwards to Mansfield. He married Esther or Hester , who her gravestone states died Feb. 14, 1726, JE. 70. Niimber and names of all the children unknown. They had sons Isaac, William, James and Theophilas^ Hall, born , died Aug. 29, 1747 ; married Mar. 20, 1720, Ruth, daughter of Ensign Jonathan Sargent of Mansfield, Conn. 8 children, 3 sons ; the eldest son, third child, was Nathaniel^ Hall, born Mansfiald, Conn., died New Haven [Addison Co.], Vt., at the house of his son Richard, July 27, 1816, JE. 92. Married Feb. 18, 1768, Mehetable, daughter of Cornelius Storrs of Mansfield, who died Mar. 13, 1830. He was a soldier of the Revolution, was present at the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga. He was caj^tain of militia. The genealogy states that after he was engaged to marry, Mehetable's grandfather Storrs gave him a tract of land in Lebanon, N. H., then a wilderness, if he would settle on it, " which he was reluctant to do on account of the hardships to which it would subject his wife." But she " settled the business by telling him if he did not go, she would not marry him." Children, all born Lebanon, N. H. : Storrs, b. Jan. 5, 1770 ; m. ; d. In reference to Moses Hel)ard, the compiler's assistant co])ied his head- stone inscription so that the copy stated that he was born in Lelianon, N. H., in 1719. This part of the inscription maybe an error of the stone cutter, but it is clearly an error ; the town was not settled till many years later than 1719. Without changing the form of the inscri])tion coj)y, it has been made to conform to the facts l)y punctuation. The llibbard genealogy gives the line of the early settlers of Lebanon : Robert' Hebard, born Salisbury [Wiltshire], England, l)aptized Mar. 13, 1613; died, Beverly, [Essex Co.] Mass., after Apr. 9, 1684, the date of his will, and June 24 of that year when it was probated. The genealogy of liis name, puljlished 1863, gives his pedigree, and states that, traditionally, William,' the first of the name to land in N(;w England, was " a son of Simon, who is said to have died while on the voyage to this couutr\-, and of Margaret Baret." The sixth report of the Record Commissioners of Boston, published 1881, " containing the Koxbury Land and Church Records," supports this tradition. As Roxijury (annexfid to the City of Boston in 18G8) adjoined the old town of Boston, it is prao tically certain that the family landed at its harbor front, and the mfjmlter- sliip of the widow Margaret in the church at Roxbury, of which thf. Rev. John Eliot (sometimes called the Apostle to the Indians) was minister, fixes the date of immigration. His register has this title: "A r(;corde of such as adjoyned themselves vnto the fellowship of this Church of Christ at Roxborough : as also of such children as they had when they joyned, & of such as were borne vnto them vnder the holy Cov(;nant of this Church who are most pperly the seede of this Church" (Rec. Corn. Rej»ort, ]>. 73). On page 79 of the report the following record appears : " Margret Hunt- ington widow; she came in the yeare 1G33, her liusband dyed by the way of the small pox, she brought chihlren with her." William^ Hunting^ton, supposed to be the son of Simon and Margaret (Baret) Huntington, was of Salisbury, Rlssex Co., Mass., as early as 1G40; dierl about 1G89; married Joanna Bayley. In memory of Mrs. Martha Storrs, relict of Mr. Cornelius Storrs of Mansfield, Connecticut; she died Dec. 23, 1776, in the 64th year of her age. Although but one epitaph with the surname Storrs was copied in the Old Pine Cemetery, the compilation that follows will show that a goodly number were born to the name in Lebanon, some evidently married there and some doubtless died in the town. The Storrs Genealogy published in 1886 is mainly relied on for authority. The family is traced back to Sutton-Cum-Lound, Nottinghamshii'e, England. William Storrs, great, great grandfather of the emigrant to New England, dated his will in the last year of the reign of Queen Mary, 1557. His son Robert's will was probated 1588; his son Cordall dated his will Feb. — , 1615, and his son Thomas Storrs, baptized Apr. 25, 1 605, married Mary . From his son, Harrison S. Smalley, assistant professor of politi- cal economy in the University of Michigan, the cominler has received valuable information, the most important being the correction of the death date of Fidelia (Storrs) Smalley, erroneously given in the gene- alogy of the name, as Nov. 21, 1837 : Joseph, the father of Elisha Smalley, 31 was born in Conn, in 1744, removed from Norwich, Vt., to Brookfield [Orange Co.], Vt., in 1792, and died there Oct. 22, 1804. Tlie Wlieatley Genealogy, published in 11)02, is the authority for the statements which follow : Capt. John was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1718 : died in Lebanon [Grafton Co.], N. H., July 30, 1786. His father, who died in 1731, was a surgeon in the British navy. Intended by his mother for the navy, he was indentured to the commander of a vessel for a term of seven years to fit him as a mariner. The ship sailed for America, bound for New London or Norwich, Conn. The captain sold his indentures to a farmer in that vicinity, Avith whom it is believed he remained until he was 21 years old. He soon began teaching school, following the sea between terms. He com- manded a company in the French war in 1759 ; with his company from Connecticut he was in the expedition of 1761 against Havana, which re- sulted in its capture Aug. 14, 1762. Before the return of the expedition, his family lived in Boston, Mass., and Norwich, Conn., until after the close of the French war in 1763, when, with the exception of the two elder children, they accompanied him to Lebanon, N. H. He was moderator of its first town meeting, Sei)t. J 2, 1765, the town clerk for nearly 20 years, the first civil magistrate, the first schoolmaster and the first representative in the New Hampshire legislature, and the first and only representative of the town in the Vermont legislature, at the time when the 1 6 border towns gave allegiance to that state ; and held other positions of ])ublic trust. He did not serve In the Revolutionary army, but sent his four sons, two of whom died in the service. He married in 1742, Submit Peck, widow of Aaron Cook, daughter of Benjamin^ Peck of Franklin, a town originally a part of Norwich, Conn. ; he was a son of Benjamin,^ grandson of Henry^ Peck, who was of New Haven, Conn., in 1638. The compiler has been unable to determine the pai'entage of the John Wood who was the father of the little Anna who died in 1817. Her mother was the daughter of Levi and Jemima (Martin) Hyde, and the genealogy of that name states that he was born July 30tli, 1768, and that at the date of his marriage, Apr. 28, 1796, he was of Lebanon, N. H., where he re- mained as a farmer till his death, March 26, 1838. His widow, born Leb- anon, Apr. 26, 1779, was still living in the town of her birth in 1857. Some two or three miles in an air line from the " Old Pine Cemetery " of Lebanon, in Sidlivan Co., in that part of the town of Plaintield knoW as East Plainiield, is located one of the oldest and largest burial gi-ounds of the vicinity. It is in a hilly district, and though only about four miles east of the Connecticut, which separates these two New Hampshire towTis from those of Windsor Co. in Vermont, its altitude is much above the level of the river. It has ample space for future generations. It has been well cared for, and on the Augiist day that the compiler and his gi'andson (a imiversity student) copied the inscriptions of its headstones its condition suggested affectionate remembrance of surviving relatives, and rest and peace for those beneath its sod. The compiler has been unable to determine from i^ublished works the parentage of Moses Chase. There can be little doubt that he is a descendant of an early settler of ^ the name in Coimish, another Sullivan Co. town borderiug on the Connec- ticut river. The genealogy of Chase will undoubtedly be of interest to those of the name or connected with it by marriage, many of whom must yet be resident in the vicinity of the old cemetery. Cornish is an adjoin- ing town to Plainlield. A "native here and to the manor born " in 1818, who will be quoted as authority, wrote in 1867 that "the town of Cornish is full of Chases." The genealogical line may also be of some interest to others who are not of the locality, as it shows that this New England branch of the family gave to the country Salmon Portland Chase, who as Governor, Senator, as a member of President Lincoln's Cabinet, and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, gained a national reputation. He was born in Cornish, January 13, 1808. Another circum- 38 stance of some general interest is the fact that the line can be traced to the great grandfather or the emigrant to New England through three gen- erations of English progenitors, making him of the fourth generation from the earliest known ancestor of the name. Aquila^ Chase (Aquila,^ Richard," Thomas^), horn , 1618, came to New England with or after his brother Thomas ; both were of Hampton, Rockingham Co., N. H., as early as 1639 or 40. About 1646 he removed to Newbury [Essex Co.], Mass. He made his will Sept. 19, 1670, and died on the 27th of the following December. He married Anne, daughter of John Wheeler. They had 1 1 children, 5 sons ; the youngest child was Moses^ Chase (Aquila,^ Aquila,^ Richard,- Thomas'^), born Newbury, Mass., Dec. 24, 1663, was an ensign in the Essex Co. regiment; married Anne, daughter of Thomas Follensbee, and had 9 children, 7 sons ; the 2d son, 2d child was DanieP Chase (Moses,^ Aquila,^ Aquila,' Richard," Thomas^), born New- bury, Sept. 20, 1685 ; died Sutton [Worcester Co.], Mass., Apr. —,1768 ; married Jan. 6, 1706, Sarah March, and had 10 children, 7 sons; the eld- est child was SamueF Chase (Daniel,® Moses,^ Aquilla,^® Richard,- Thomas^), born Newbury, Mass., Sept. 28, 1707 ; died Cornish [Sullivan Co.], N. H., Aug. 12, 1800 ; married Mary Dudley and removed with his family to Cornish, of which he was one of the founders. His children were Samuel, Jona- than, March, Dudley, born 1730, Sarah, Elizabeth, Solomon, Anne and Mary. In the library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Mass., there is a single sheet, measuring 8 by 10 inches including margins. The printing on its face is but 6 by 7 inches. It shows in the form of a letter addressed by a father to his son, the line of their ancestry. Its author was Naham Chase, who was born in Cornish, July 24, 1818. From the letter the compiler quotes: " Abanby, N. Y., April 3, 1867. * * * Your great great grandfather was Moses Chase. He was one of the first settlers of the town of Cornish, N. H. He had nine sons, all of whom lived to be men : John, Caleb, Nahum, Daniel, Clement, owning large farms in Cornish, Harvey a lawyer in Cornish ; Amos, went to Ohio ; Mooda, went to Illinois ; and another whose name I have forgotten. * * * Your great grandfather John Chase was born in Cornish in 1752 — had a second wife. By his first had son Cotton * * * by his second Moses, a farmer and miller ; Gilman, a farmer, went west ; John, who became a merchant in Boston ; Juda, died a missionary among the In- dians at the south " [and five daughters] " I believe all born in Cornish," * * * Your grandfather Cotton Chase was born Aug. 8, 1783, married about 1814 Betsey Chase, who was born Aug. 19, 1789, both of the town of Cornish. She was his first cousin, his father Deacon John Chase and Tier father Capt. Calel) Chase being own brothers. They had five children, Martha C, born Sept. 21, 1816 ;"Nahura (your father), born July 24, 1818; Caleb R., born Oct. 3, 1820 (of Windsor, Vt.) ; Hannah B.,' born Aug. 16), 1824, died at 3 years of age; Caroline Hannah, born Dec. 18, 1827, died at thirty." In connection with the record of his son's paternal grandmother, Betsey Chase, his father gives the list of her brothers and four sisters. Her brothers wei'e Caleb, born Cornish about 1797, Kimball and Nahum. The last named died young ; the two elder brothers went to Boston and engaged in business ; of them he writes : " Caleb went to Bos- 39 ton, Mass., when he was a young man, and became a wealthy dry goods merchant — built ships, was a large importer and wholesale dealer * * * he is my uncle ; Kimball went to Boston and became a dry gooils mei-- chant." This uncle Caleb died in Boston, Mass., Feb. 8, 18(35, aged 68. The record of his death confirms the statements of his nei)hew as to his birthplace and parentage, but adds nothing to his narrative except that it appears by record that his mother was named Elizabeth and that both parents were born in Cornish. Mr. Nahum^- Chase (born 1818, whose wife was Betsey, daughter of Jacob Ecker of an old Dutch family of Berne, Albany Co., N. Y.), began his letter to his son with a reference to that ancestor (Moses of the 9th generation) concerning whose family he had knowledge from his father Cotton^^ and grandfather John^° who was born in 1752 ; but in his recital told all he knew as to an earlier progenitor. His exact words were " Your great, great, great grandfather's name was March Chase." The compiler some twenty years since had a liusiness acquaintance with a Mr. George B.^° Chase, a son of Theodore^ Chase, a Boston merchant whose mansion house stood at the corner of Beacon and Bowdoin Streets in that city, whose line to the English immigrant was Theodore,^ Stephen,^ Ste})hen,' Joseph,® Atpiila,^ Aquila.'* When his father Theodore^ died in 1859 he was in possession "of some of the family papers of his ancestor Aquila." In the investigation of liis family line Mr. George Bigelow Chase had the assistance of the expert genealogist Horatio G. Somerby, who after an investigation of family and other records in New England, made in 1869 an exhaustive search of old English records. The result of the search was the publication in " The Heraldic Journal " of " A genealogcal memoir of the Chase Family," in Old and New England, " witli notices of some of their descendants." The record of SamueP (Daniel," INIoses,® Aquila,^ Aquila,^ Ricliard,- Thomas^) and the (|uotatious that follow are from this work. Mr. Somerby visited Chesham [Buckinghamshii-e] to ex- amine its parish register. Its earliest record relating to the family determined that Thomas' Cliase of Hundrich, in the parish of Chesham, was the father of the Richard^ Chase (Thomas^), baptized Chesham, Aug. 3, 1542, who, Apr. 16, 1564, married Joan Bishop. Their cliildren, all baptized Chesham, were i. Robert,^ bapt. Sept. 2, 1565. vi. Aquila, bapt. Aug. 14, 1580. ii. Henry, " Aug. 10, 1567. vii. Jason, " Jan. 13,1583. iii. Lydia, " Oct. 4, 1573. viii. Thomas, " July 18, 1585. iv. P:zekiel, " Apr. 23, 1576. ix. Al)igail, " Jan. 12,1588. V. Dorcas, " Mar. 2, 1578. x. Mordecai, " July 31, 1591. The register at Chesham contains no other mention of Aquila, Thomas and Mordecai than the record of their ba|)tism. Of the seven remaining chililren of Richard Chase, their marriages or deaths, and in some cases both, are recorded. This shows that three of the younger sons left Chesham and lived and died elsewhere." * * * "• Xlie discovery of the unique name of Acpula, found nowhere else in England l^efore or since, in any records of families bearing the name of Chase, was deemed conclusive proof by Mr. Somerby, as it lias been since by other distinguished anticpiarians, of the identity of 40 the American with the English families." * * * Aquila' Chase mar- ried [family tradition holds her name to have- been Sarah] and had sons Aquila,^ born 1618 ; died Newbury, Essex Co., Mass., Dec. 27th, 1G70 ; who married Anna Wheeler, and Thomas^ Chase, who was of New England as early as 1636; married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Philbrick of Hampton [Rockingham Co.], N. H., where he died in 1653. Five of their sons are of record. In the Heralds Visitation of Buckinghamshire of 1634 the coat armor of the Chases of Chesham is given as " Gules, four crosses patonce, ar- gent ; on a canton azure, a lion passant, or. Crest, a lion rampant, or, holding between his feet a cross patonce, argent." Mr. Chase's work connects the Cornish branch with their English ances- tors, for among the descendants of Thomas^ of Hundrich he includes that March^ Chase who was the son of SamueF and Mary (Dudley) Chase, who were among the earliest settlers of Cornish, N. H. Dudley^ Chase, son of SamueF and brother of March® Chase of Cor- nish, N. H., was born , 1730; died Apr. 13, 1814; married Aug. 23, 1753, Alice Corbet of Mendon [Worcester Co.], Mass. The earliest records of the family give the name as Cutt, and it was not universally known as Cutts until 1745. John, Richard, Robert and Ann Cutt are known by their wills to have been brothers and sister. In 1657 John Cutt is first mentioned in Portsmouth, N. II., records. That these brothers left England for America l^efore 1646 is a family tradition. Rob- ert Cutt went first to the Barbadoes in the West Indies thence to Ports- mouth from that place to Kittery [York Co.], Maine. 44 Robert^ Cutt married Mary Hoel, a young English lady of the West Indies before his arrival in New England. They had 6 cliildren, 2 sons ; the eldest of all was Richard^ Cutt (Robert^), who died probably before 1736, married in 1686, Joaima, daughter of Thomas and Lucia (Treworgye) Wills, who died, probably in 1743. 13 children, 6 sons ; the third son, 7th child, was Thomas'^ Cutt (Richard,'^ Robert^), born April 15, 1700 ; died Jan. 10, 1795 ; married Apr. 23, 1724, Dorcas, daughter of Judge Joseph and Plan- nah (Stover) Hammond. 8 children, 5 sons ; the 4th son, 6th child, was Joseph^ Cutts (Thomas,^ Richard,^ Robert^), born Aug. 2, 1736 ; died , 1808 ; married Nov. 2, 1758, Mary Stevenson. They lived in Kittery, Maine, until 1789, when they removed with their family to Goshen [Sullivan Co.], N. The births of his children are recorded in such manner as to show that the last child of the first wife was born Nov. 15, 1821 ; the fii'st child of the third wife was born March 15, 1842. The genealogy of the name published in 1897 gives the pethgree of a family which in that latter part of the 18th and earlier part of the 19th centuries was settled in Plainfield where eleven of its children were born. Peter^ Garland, mariner, born in England, married Elizabeth , who died in 1687, aged 88 years. Resided Charlestown, which settled in 1630, in 1874 became a part of the city of Boston, Mass. Powers, died Aug. 16, 1861, aged 59 years. 48 In connection with the name of Huntington found in " The Old Pine Cem- etery " of Lebanon, N. H., the compiler abstracted the statements of the genealogist of the name as to William the emigrant ancestor of Jeremiah Huntington who died in that town rlune 18, 1794. A reference to that immio'rant was already in type describing him as the first of the name to land in New Enaland when the compiler of the genealogy obtained defi- nite information as to his father, which confirmed the tradition that he had died at sea ; and determined that when his widowed mother landed at Bos- ton she had with her not only her son William, but his brothers Thomas, Christopher and Simon. The widow about 1G3;J married Thomas Stough- ton of Dorchester (a part of Boston since 1870), Mass., who with his family removed to Windsor [Hartford Co.], Conn., where he died March 25, 1G61. Lois (Huntington) Martin was a descendant of the last named son, the line being Simonlluntington, born England about 1 GOO, died at sea 1633 ; mar- ried England [probably Norwich, Co. Norfolk], Margaret Baret. They were the parents of Deacon Simon^ Huntington, born England, 1629; died Norwich [New- London Co.], Conn, June 28, 1703, aged 77 years; married, Saybrook [Middlesex Co.], Conn., Oct. — , 1653, Sarah, daughter of Joseph Clark of Windsor, Conn., who died , 1721, aged 8rf years. 10 children, 6 sons ; the youngest child was James^ Huntington (Simon^), born Norwich, Conn., May 18, 1680; died Norwich, Sept. 3, 1727; married Priscilla Miller. 6 children, 2 sons; the 1st son, 2d child,, was James* Huntington (James,- Simon^), born Norwich, Conn., Feb. 2, 1707; died May 12, 17H5 ; married Dec. 3, 1735, Elizabeth Darby, who died Jan. 12, 1790. They lived in that part of Norwich called the Great Plain. 1 1 children, 5 sons ; the eldest child was ^^illiam* Huntington (James,* - Simon^), born Eeb. 1, 1737 ; died Mid- dlebury [Addison Co.], Vt., July 4, 1816; married Dec. 11, 1763, Anne Pride," who died Mar. 4, 1776; 2d, Feb. 11, 1777, Lois Durkee, and 3d, Apr. 14, 1791, Elizabeth Waterman. A soldier of the Revolution. He lived for a few years in Lel)anon [New London Co.], Conn., and then re- moved to Vermont. 1 1 children, 4 sons ; the 4th daughter, 8th child, was Fanny^ Huntington (William,* James,* - Simoni),born Norwich, Conn., Nov. 14, 1777 ; atchelder, the revolutionary pensioner of Grantham, were of Hampton, Rockingham Co., N. H., for six generations from the time before 1640, when the Rev. Ste^ihen Bachiler settled there, till J 770, when Jonathan's father removed to Northwood, in the same county, son\e thirty miles distant from the spot where the name was first established in New England. It appears by Dow's history of Hampton that the emigrant Thomas^ Leavitt was of Exeter, N. II., in 1639, but had removed to Hampton as early as 1644, where he died Nov. 28, 1696, aged "above 80," that his son Aretus- Leavitt, born about 1646, married, Aug. 1, 1717i, Ruth Sleeper, and died Jan. 14, 1739, They had not less than seven' children. Their 2d son, 4th child, was Jamcs'^ Leavitt, born about 1683 ; married Feb. 20, 1717, Ann Brackett, and 2d, Hannah . 5 children of record ; his only son, 3d child, was James' Leavitt, born Jan. 12, 1722 ; died July 29, 1761 ; married Dec. 4, 1751, Sarah, daughter of Shubael Sanborn. His youngest child of record was 63 James^ Leiivitt, born June 22, 1760; married May 31, 1781, Betsey, oi' Betty, daughter of Nathaniel Batchekler. They had 14 children, 2 sons; the eldest child was Sarah*' Leavitt, born June 7, 1782; died, as recorded in town records, Nov. 12, 1835, but l)y Dow's record, Sept. 11, 1833, married Samuel Batchelder, born Hampton Oct. 15, 17.S0, died June 12, 1857. The Betsey, or Ik'tty, who married James* Leavitt was of the Hampton Batchelders, and the Samuel Batchelder who married Sarah*^ Leavitt was (;ousin to Jonathan Batchelder, who died on Leavitt's Ilill in Grantham, N. H., June 19, 1846, the son of Jonathan's uncle, SamueP Batchelder. The gravestones of the two wives of John Leavitt (who was born about 1770) show that Susan B. was born about 1778, and Rachel B. about 1781. The initial B. in connection with both names, at a time when "middle names" were very uncommon, would seem to indicate that they were sisters, born to the name of Batchelder, and Benjamin's birth in 1786, and that of his brother Daniel in 1792 (gravestone), suggests the probability that at least four of the children of Jonathan (born about 1757) and Sarah. (Clifford) Batchelder came with, or followed, their parents to Leavitt's Hill in Grantham. Without the aid of a genealogy of the name, the inscriptions on the gravestones and information gained from a grandson of John and Susan B. L(;avitt en;il)les the compiler to make such a first sketch genealogical state- ment as follows : John Leavitt, born about 1770; died Grantham, Sullivan Co., N. H., Oct. 30, 1854; married Susan B , born about 1778, died Grantham, Sullivan Co., N. IL, May 11, 1839; married 2d, Rachel B , born about 1781, died Grantham, Sullivan Co., N. IL, Feb. 16, 1853.
